I caught a clip of one of those lame "Top Ten" shows on TV Land in the middle of the night and got to thinking about what I thought were the best and funniest sitcoms from over the years.

1. Malcolm In the Middle - Has me rolling every time I see it and I never tire of it. Highly rewatchable and I swear that they based Lois on my own mother, from the discipline to the screaming of "Do you think we're wealthy?!" at the top of her lungs.
2. Good Times - Not as good after John Amos left, but until then, it was hysterically funny.
3. Green Acres - I always thought of it as a comic version of Twin Peaks. Rather insane for a sixties sitcom.
4. Murphy Brown - Dan Quayle jokes never get old.
5. Maude - Bea Arthur is enough for me. I especially loved the episode where she went to a psychiatrist and the entire thing was comprised of her giving a 22-minute monologue. It needs to be put on DVD.
6. Soap - Jessica Tate is one of the best characters ever. Much love for Katherine Helmond.
7. Roseanne - The last few seasons were putrid, but those first ones were genius. Laurie Metcalf was my personal favorite, she always had my sides hurting.
8. The Golden Girls - Four elderly women incessantly talking about sex and coveting cheesecake like Shrub covets oil. Loved it.
9. All In the Family - I still think it's hilarious and some of the things they did on that show must have been truly shocking back then. Same with Soap, Maude, and Good Times.
10. Cheers - So good that I still can't choose between Shelley Long and Kirstie Alley.

I would have added Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, but it wasn't a sitcom. I would have also added Absolutely Fabulous, but I don't consider that one a sitcom, either.

In no particular order:

1. The Office - British version and American now too (O..M..G...this show is too funny for words, and Ricky and Steve are the worse bosses EVAH!)

2. Seinfeld - Classic...random....hilarious.

3. Coupling - British version ONLY and really only the first 3 seasons, but the fourth wasn't too horrible. Very quotable show!

4. The Monkees - They crack me up with their delivery and facial expressions more than anything. Gotta love the fun music too.

5. Wings - One of my favorite shows of allll time and I heart Joe and Helen.

6. Blackadder - The second and third seasons are the best. "I have a cunning plan." Hee!

7. King of Queens - Have always liked Kevin's stand up and this show never fails to crack me up.

8. Frasier - "I'm not gay, Gee!" "I'm listening." One of the best spinoffs EVAH!

9. Night Court - Dan Fielding is one of the best sitcom characters EVAH!

10. The Golden Girls - Never fails to crack me up! I love that they all have majorly different personalities.

1. The Golden Girls - my favorite; Golden Palace was kind of lame...it wasn't the same without Bea Arthur, and Cheech Marin gets on my nerves.

2. The Jeffersons - although, the 2nd Lionel really sucked.

4. Bewitched - They need to get the rest of the series out on DVD, fast! Didn't care for the 1st Darren, and I didn't like it when they had the son Adam. But the rest is greatness.

5. Good Times - great show, and it did suck after John Amos left and it completed its transition into "The J. J. Show."

6. Sanford and Son

7. Fawlty Towers

8. Maude - just because you can never have too much Bea Arthur

9. Mary Tyler Moore

10. Bob Newhart - the one from the '70s that was good, not the one from the '80s that sucked...who was that squeaky little blonde on there who they also brought on to Designing Women (thus ruining the show)? god, I hated her.

1. Golden Girls - No contest! I just got season one on dvd and even though I've seen the episodes a million times they're still hilarious! Bea rocks!

2. Seinfeld - George was one of the most annoying sitcom characters ever but Elaine more than made up for him

3. Just Shoot Me - It kinda sucked towards the end when they added that mail delivery idiot, but the earlier seasons were great. Not one bad character in the beginning.

4. Bewitched - I grew up watching the re-runs and loved it. I always loved Sam's cousin Serena and it was not long ago that I got the Pandora Spocks thing

5. The Nanny - Yes, the voice could be annoying but I loved it from the first season to the last. Even though she was the butt of all the jokes, I had a huge crush on C.C.

6. Are You Being Served? - Totally cheesy yes, but still very funny.

7. George & Mildred - Again, total cheese but I really like a lot of those 70s Brit sitcoms

8. 3rd Rock From The Sun - I sorta drifted in and out of watching this one, but it could be great at times.

9. Clueless - Preferred it heaps over the movie version.

10. Wanda At Large - Didn't last long but Wanda Sykes is one of my favourite comedians

Seinfeld. Best show of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :blob1: :blob1: :blob1:

Married, With Children. Al Bundy kills me, every time.

Malcolm in the Middle. Just plain funny.

Green Acres. "Olivah!"

The Dick Van Dyke Show. This show was SO ahead of it's time. It's a real class act.

Andy Griffith Show. What can I say?

Golden Girls. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

M*A*S*H. Does this count as a sitcom?

Roseanne. I didn't care much for it in it's initial run, but I really like it now.

Beverly Hillbillies. Yeah, I like the cornpone humor.

I don't really watch many sitcoms, so I'll list as many as I can, but it won't be near 10 :o

Friends- I must have seen every episode 10x, but this show never gets old for me

The Nanny- LOVE it! "Oh Mr. Sheffield...."

The Golden Girls- Every character on this show cracks me up, but I couldn't stand the Golden Palace. Without Bea, the magic was gone for me.

Malcolm in the Middle- Dewy makes this show!

Just Shoot Me- I wasn't extrememly into this one, but whenever I watch it now I always get a laugh.

Third Rock From the Sun- Hit and miss with me, sometimes I love it, sometimes I think it falls flat.

2. Cheers--I cried during the last episode, lamenting "what will I evah watch now??? Then "Friends" stepped in.

4. Golden Girls--what Diss said.

5. The Andy Griffith Show--I love Barney Fife. :)

6. All in the Family---again, what Diss said.

Malcolm in the Middle- Dewy makes this show!

His family owns a little restaurant here in MA. I had pizza there once and it was pretty good.

I love everyone on that show, they're all hilarious. My favorite episode was the first season finale with Bea Arthur as Dewey's babysitter when the rest of the family went to a waterpark. I practically **** my pants when Malcolm pushed his mother down the waterslide. And the episode where Malcolm slept over Stevie's house was priceless, too. "I...can't...feel...my...legs!"

Not in order:
The Jeffersons - One of the first i 've ever seen and is still among my favourites
Frasier - Perfectly acted, great jokes and storyline.
Roseanne - Anti - conventional and violently truthful.
Taxi - I watched it mainly for Danny De Vito.
The Nanny - Great, funny characters, and the subplot (C.C - Niles) was way better than the main plot (Fran - Max).
3rd Rock From The Sun - Even only for the first two or three seasons: John Lithgow is a brilliant actor.
Alf - best alien ever landed on Earth.
Bette - It's a shame they canceled it so soon, to see Bette Midler doing Bette Midler was wonderful.
Get Smart - 007 pales at comparison.
The Simpsons - It has the best comedy writers around, IMO.

"Look! All the glamour of a leather bar without the two drink minimum."

I loved it, too, and it would have been spectacular with better writers. Bette should have nabbed Bruce Vilanch. She's now going to co-headline Caesar's Palace with Celine and Elton, so I can't wait for that. And she's coming out with an album of Peggy Lee songs this fall, too.

2) The Wonder Years - Particularly in the early years.
3) Wings - Watch out - sex can burn your house down!
4) The Golden Girls - I <3 Bea Arthur.
5) Perfect Strangers - Balki!!!!
6) Three's Company - Ritter was a great comedian.
7) Empty Nest - Sentimental choice
8) Roseanne - Again, in the early years.
9) Facts of Life - I loved this soooo much as kid.
10) Happy Days - What can I say?

I'd love to see her live, she brings such an energy and positive vibe to everything she does. The album of Peggy Lee songs sounds great. Her voice always involves me, and one of the best things of her movies is when she start to sing something, like the scene in That Old feeling when she sings Somewhere Along The Way: simply beautiful.

Sitcoms...kind of a "thing of the past" for the most part...at least in Case De Chili...we're hooked on History, Discovery & Science channels mostly now:

Actually, I could pretty much just list all the NBC "Must See" comedies that were on through the years...that was my "night" for TV watching.

Here's the cream of the crop in our house:
Stark Raving Mad (MUCH too short of a run...at least Tony Shaloub got "Monk" in fairly short order)
Scrubs (the fantasy sequences are hilarious)
Bosom Buddies (just hard to believe this is where Tom Hanks started)
Reno 911 (just keeps getting funnier & funnier)
South Park
Friends (never seem to tire of it...but I just can't seem to get into seeing Joey by himself)
Dick Van Dyke Show (one from my childhood)
The Cosby Show (when I was recouping from my "debacle in December", I started watching the syndicated re-runs...got hooked on it all over again)
ALF (didn't watch faithfully, but if I saw it was on, I watched...where are the re-runs?)
Fraiser (never seemed to have "jumped the shark"...although it DID come close a couple of seasons way back when, when they were trying to cover up Jane Leeves' pregnancy without writing a "Daphne's pregnant" into storyline)
Mad About You (loved the Buchmans)

BONUS:
Buffalo Bill (GREAT show! Geena Davis, Dabney Coleman, Joanna Cassidy)

And...well, yeah...most of the Norman Lear shows...
All In The Family
The Jeffersons
Sanford & Son
Maude

Others that got much viewing (NOT on re-runs, mind you...rarely watch any of the syndicated re-runs):

Cheers
Seinfeld
3rd Rock
Night Court
Wings
Will & Grace
Newhart/Bob Newhart Show
Get Smart
Bewitched
I Dream Of Jeannie
Gilligan's Island
My Mother The Car
Coach
Taxi
Barney Miller
Dobie Gillis
Andy Griffith
Spin City (Michael J. Fox years, mostly...although Charlie Sheen was pretty funny, too; I kind of lost interest)

I guess I spent a LOT of time watching sitcoms.

How about a top five instead? ('Cause I can't think of ten!)

1. Black Adder

All time best TV show of any kind!!! The second season was by far the greatest, but all were wonderful.

2. Night Court

Interestingly, the star of this show - Harry Anderson - was probably the least funny cast member. John Larroquette, who played Dan Fielding, absolutely made the show. TV Land recently did a weekend long marathon and I was glued to the set.

3. Roseanne

I always like the character of Darlene, because she reminded me of me. Also had the biggest crush on Johnny Galecki (spelling?) who played David, Darlene's boyfriend. Was an incredible show until the Connors won the lottery. Then it just got stupid.

4. Married with Children

:o :o :o :o :o :o
So politically incorrect! So funny!

5. Murphy Brown

For some reason I always liked the neurotic Miles Silverburg the most.

Did you ever see The Thin Blue Line? It's another Britcom starring Rowan from some of the same writers that did Black Adder. I bought it on the assumption that it would be great since I love Black Adder so much and really like Mr. Bean as well, but I just didn't get it. I didn't make it more than two episodes in before I gave up, and I bought the damned box set!

I was bummed when he left, but they redeemed themselves when they got Lily Tomlin. She's truly gifted. All she has to do is give a look of the eye and I'm in stitches. Now, if only they would play it more than ONCE on Nick At Nite and release more seasons on DVD...

I forgot to mention Moonlighting, which isn't really a sitcom, but it's incredibly funny and one of my all time favorites. Such a *fantastic* show.

That show is unparalelled when it comes to real belly laughs (though Malcolm In the Middle comes very close). It's so fast paced and the zingers come so steadily that I wonder if Jennifer Saunders is even human. And it's so ****ing quotable that it's RIDICULOUS.

I wish they would give us more of Bubble in the new episodes, though, because Jane Horrocks is hysterical.

Yes, everything is true that you said. Omigod, when they went to France, I thought I was going to die. Same with Marekkesh? Morocco? you know the one.
Anyway, I've never considered buying a set of a TV show, but I definitely want that one.

My Ab Fab DVDs are amongst my most prized of possessions. Morocco is one of my faves, as is the Orgy episode. When Gran puts the condoms on her hands to wash dishes and says "They don't put fingers on these gloves!"? I LOSE IT! Gawd, that show is unbelievable. I only started watching it when they released the first season on DVD a couple of years ago and I've been hooked ever since. That show makes me convulse violently because it's so damned funny. It's another highly quotable show.

"They have a special program for gifted children. They have advanced textbooks and devoted teachers and all sorts of good things they don't wanna waste on normal kids."

"You know what the best thing about childhood is? At some point, it ends."

"You kids, you just take your legs for granted. There's meningitis, there are car accidents. I could be giving you a spanking and accidentally snap your spinal cord. Every day is a lottery and first prize is that you don't have to scoot yourself around town on a skateboard with your hands. You think about that."

"Fate is what you call it when you don't know the name of the person screwing you over."

"I can't tell you how many times I've been jealous of your mother and her purse. You know, we men have to shove our whole lives in a little square of leather, that we then have to sit on."

"Happy thoughts, happy thoughts... Puppies, ice cream, fat people falling over..."

Personally, I think that once the kids get too old to be on the show anymore, they should just keep going with Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston. They're unbelievably funny, imo, though she's so much like my mother that it's eerie.

Tears are streaming down my face, mascara running down like Tara Reid on a sambuca/quaalude bender....that is the damn funniest thing I've read in a long time! Thanks for the laugh! :xoxo:

 +10 for the Tara Reid reference.

My other favorites:

"Look at those Parker boys across the street. They may be healthy, but, honest to God, those are the ugliest little boys ever born. They look like boiled beets, don't you think? And those Henderson kids? They electrocuted their dog when they were trying to get free cable. How smart can they be? Just remember, any kid who makes fun of you is a creepy little loser who will end up working in a car wash."

"Dewey, go easy on the orange juice. That stuff doesn't grow on trees - wait, it does. So why is it so damned expensive?"

AND - the episode where Eddie and Patsy are arrested for shoplifting.

Those are three of my favorite episodes! Selling Saffy to the human slave trade in Marrakesh?! Hilaaaarious!

You can get the first three seasons in a boxed set for only $20 at Columbia House and another for free, but you have to buy, I think, three more sets within a two or three years. It's worth it, imo. Lots of outtakes and special features.

The outtakes make you wonder whether or not they were drunk for real. The fourth disc in the set is all special features. It has the original French and Saunders skit that they spun it off from, a making-of doc that was in the old video set ("How To Be Absolutely Fabulous"), an hour and a half long clip show, etc.

oh, okay. I've seen French and Saunders. The rest sounds good. Did you see Jennifer on Letterman a long time ago? She was toooootally straight and calm and normal. But, just Jennifers face and movements make me laugh. Heh, I had a girlcrush on her, too (cheekbones). She's fab. Thanks again.

ok lets see...

1. Mary Tyler Moore (greatest show all around ever! great acting, great writing, great comedic abilities, great characters and most emmies for any tv show... ok cheers tied them but cheers was on for 11 years and MTM was only on for 7, so i think that makes mtm the winner)

2. Dick Van Dyke (Dick is the greatest physical comedian ever. and Mary was a good partner for him)

3. I Love Lucy (Desi arnaz, inventor of the rerun... and Lucy- gosh lucy... who doesn't love lucy?)

4. Bewitched (i still wiggle my nose when i want someone that is impossible... Endora is my favorite!)

5. Bob Newhart (remember the thanksgiving episode where emily went out of town and the guys got drunk and couldn't cook the turkey so they ordered chinese food and ended up accidently ordering like, 15 orders of moo goo gai pan and the delivery guy came with all of the food on that wheely thingy? oh gawd i peed my pants at that one)

6. South Park (so horrible and tasteless, but someone has to do it and make it funny)

7. Out of This World (i still wish i could put my fingers together and stop time)

8. Golden Girls (amazing writing and comic timing)

9. Andy Griffith (i could watch this solely for opie when he was little... ron howard was a riot!)

10. The Brady Bunch (yeah i know... it sucks... but no matter what time of day it is or what condition i am in, if it's on, i'll watch it and i'll be totally entertained. i have no idea why!)
