Catinthedark put up this question on the Stevie forum and it sounds like a great discussion topic, so hope you don't mind me using it Cat..Here goes

"..today's artists are flashes in the pan. I've often wondered... who's going to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 20 years from now?"

..any thoughts?

I dunno.... Gwen Stefani maybe? i don't really care for her music (her early stuff is better... can't stand some of her new songs), but i think she'll be around for a long time. I think Green Day is another possibility....

whet stevie meant when she said that, was that in order to have a long lasting musical career, one needs to know how to write well, instead of relying on their sexual appeal. so, in that context, i've the slight feeling those two won't qualify.

Don't mind at all, Tuigirl! It is something I've thought about... I believe the RRHOF just may have to fold in the coming decades. There just won't be artists who qualify unless there's a major shift in the way the industry works right now. I think the 80s is the last decade that saw the birth of true artists (singer/songwriters) - and I don't mean actual birth, I mean when they're careers began. I guess videos are sort of to blame? I suppose one could make an argument for an Eminem, but truly, does he deserve a place in the Rock and Roll HOF? Unless music returns to being about music and lyrics and talent, I'm afraid there will be no lasting artists. It will be an industry only of flashes in the pan, flavours of the week. Boring, uninspiring, and shallow. :(

I think people and groups like Sheryl Crow, Garbage, Franz Ferdinand, and Dave Matthews will have lasting careers like artists from back in the day. They won't continue to sell millions of albums as their careers progress, but I think they'll take the place of the artists now considered "classic" and "veteran" artists. Kelly Clarkson and her American Idol ilk won't last for long, the nature of their output guarantees as much. Hootchie Spears already has a waning career, as does Aguilera, Lopez, and all of those old boy bands. All is not lost in terms of good artists and music.

I would love to see the Stereophonics and The Sundays make it, although the lack of material may hert the SUndays

It will probably be less than 20 years but I think Nirvana and Pearl Jam will be inducted since they were so influencial in the 90's and now. I also think Sheryl Crow will be inducted.

I'm not sure about Coldplay they're are a pretty good band, but seemed on the verge of a nervous breakdown already. For Franz Ferdinand I'm not so sure yet, it can be said in the next five years, IMO, as for Scissor Sisters.
I agree on Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, Garbage, and I think also, among some others:
Stereophonics
Beck
Billy Corgan (with or without Smashing Pumpkins)
Pearl Jam
Bjork
Lauryn Hill
Ben Harper
Alanis Morissette
White Stripes
Sarah McLachlan

About Gwen Stefani, probably if she can reinvents herself in the next years (she has the talent to do it, IMO). For Spears... hope she would discover the joy to devote herself completely to family life.

Oh, you KNOW Nirvana will make it in. I mean, come on. People can't seem to figure out that Cobain's been dead for 11 years, so it's obvious.

Garbage should get in there, but the RnRHoF people do not know what they're doing, so yeah. No Doubt should make it, because Tragic Kingdom is one of the essential records of the 1990s. You can't deny her strength on all of the No Doubt albums up until Rock Steady.

Other contenders...

- Nine Inch Nails
- Alanis Morissette
- Beck
- Pearl Jam
- The White Stripes
- SMASHING PUMPKINS!
- Hole
- Jeff Buckley (if they have any idea about music)
- Black Crowes
- Sonic Youth (please, please, pleeeaaase)

Meh, I don't think that's the only thing that Madonna had going for herself. She knew how to entertain, she knew how to reinvent herself instead of becoming old hat, and she knew how to create publicity. Her sex appeal certainly helped, but it was the cherry on top of everything else, imo. She created her sexual character because she knew it would draw attention.

Totally agree with you. In fact, I believe she could be inducted. But she's not too rock and roll... I don't have an exhaustive list at my fingertips of who's been inducted; do they bend the R&R thing?

People have mentioned some really strong contenders. I agree with Nirvana, for sure. Also, Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette (do Canadians qualify?). Rufus Wainwright maybe. The list ain't long....

The term "rock and roll" means "music". It's not a specific category. The HOF is just like the lists on VH1. They use to it cover everything music. "Rock and Roll" doesn't mean rock music.

Does that mean Shania Twain has a chance? If that is the case I vote for - 80's video game music. Who can forget the Pac man's Whacka-Whacka noise? :p

It's the videos. She is the video master. She was the first giant star to use video really well, for a long time. All her reinventions had great videos.
I don't like her that much, but I truly think she is the master of videos. With all that contains, ie, reinvention, dancing, clothes, images, blah, etc.
Bar None.

whether you like her or not, you cannot ignore the fact that this lady knows how to write. she wrote (not always by herself, but still) most of her countless hit singles.
in case (and i think it IS the case) you didn't pay enough attention to her career for some time, she stopped relaying on her sex appeal years and years ago, and became a genuine musician instead of just an ordinary singing starlet.

p.s.
a tiny advise: if you're looking for a of a long lasting career by an artist who can't really sing or write, yet relays on sex appeal instead, try debating Kylie Minogue's case next time, much easier.

They really will be struggling for the same quality they've had to choose from more recently. I guess any band that made it big whether or not they were just repeating what was already done before them.

The Smashing Pumpkins
Pearl Jam
Nine Inch Nails
Sonic Youth
Oasis
Lux & The Retards

Good choices, I will also add:

Ryan Adams (if there is any justice in the world)
Tori Amos
Beck
Beastie Boys
Dixie Chicks
Elliott Smith
Jeff Buckley
Radiohead
REM (or are they in already...)
