My buddies and I have been watching the Woodstock movie all weekend, it has been repeating on VH1 classic...
aaaw spectacular!
That was my era... I was just born way too late... all my favorites
Jefferson Airplane
Joe Cocker
The Animals... I love Eric Burdon..
Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner at 5am...
brilliant..
Janis being choppered in cause the roads were packed...
Jerry Garcia rolling perfect joints..
Santana's drummer for pete's sake!! awesome.
Wavy Gravy!! I love that dude! I read all about him in Grace Slicks autobiography.. it was fantastic watching him in action.. he was the spokesman between the bands... kept the crowd in check.. told the crowd not to eat the brown acid!!!
Great Great Great..
did anybody else watch Woodstock this weekend?
just curious..
Ciao!

Don't have VH1C, but I've seen the movie several times. You're right - it's fantastic.
I love that they included so much footage of the people who attended, rather than a music-only film.

Oh man, I just bought "The Dick Cavett Show: Rock Icons" DVD boxed set and can't stop playing it. Then I saw Woodstock on the boob tube today and was in heaven. The ****ing Airplane was so fantastic back in the day. So fantastic that I've almost forgotten about their late-eighties reunion album.
Anyway, if you're enjoying Woodstock, I highly recommend the Cavett set. They're full-length episodes, three of which are Joplin and the Bowie episode is so utterly fascinating. It also has the Airplane, Joni Mitchell, Sly and the Family Stone, George Harrison, etc. The other guests are also VERY entertaining, especially Racquel Welch. Her and Joplin are a riot together.

Good info. I want that.
I actually have some Jefferson Airplane boots that I haven't listened to. I got them randomly. Better listen.

Ooh, I loooove the old live versions of "Somebody To Love". It was a different song every time. Someone posted some of their reunion shows from the eighties on Dime awhile back and those are great, too. There have been a ****load of old sixties show on there in the past week. Slick's voice is unparalelled by any female rocker, imo, it gives me shivers.

Me, too, about Slick's voice.
I just checked my CD set list, no STL.! There's all these other crazy random songs, though. A bunch I like.... :)
Sure would like an STL, though!

I'll look thorugh my boots and find a good one for you. They were much longer than the album version and sounded completely different, much more bluesy and Slick didn't stick to the flow of the studio version at all, she just sang a lyric when the mood struck.
On the Cavett show that's on the DVD, the ABC censors missed some of the lyrics and Slick belted out "Up against the wall, mother****ers!"

Those versions sound good. I love the pace/power of the original, but it's great to hear alternates, it's interesting to hear how really good singers use their voices. I'm sure I'll love it.
I'll listen to mine and see if there's anything cool. Looks like at least two versions of Crown of Creation, The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil (sp?), She Has Funny Cars (love that song), Plastic Fantastic Lover...those are the ones I know.
Ones that I don't know include:
Would You Like a Snack?
Ganja of Love
Rabbit Hole
Have You Seen the Saucers
those are just the funny titled ones. There are lots others I never heard of...

I love the Jefferson Airplane---one of my FAVORITE groups of all times. I have got to have that Dick Cavett set! I have been wanting it, since I read about it. People have been talking about some of the Airplane stuff that they have, so I thought I would mention some of the things that I have.
I have several bootlegs from back in the day from when they played the Fillmore a lot. I also have a boot from the Avalon Ballroom in San Fran as well. My friend traded for several of these which was really sweet. I have all their released CDs and their box set from 1992. The book inside the box set is awesome! You guys should check it out, if you can find it. It is out of print. I have a first pressing, psychedelic, Jefferson Airplane concert poster. It is one of my most prized possessions. I have a lot of their stuff on vinyl as well, like Surrealistic Pillow in mono and stereo, After Bathing at Baxter's,Crown of Creation, and Volunteers. My favorite is my mono Surrealistic Pillow. God, it sounds soooooo good.
I will have to second the person who said that the Fly Jefferson Airplane DVD was excellent. I have it as well. I watch it all the time. Really good stuff.
I just wished that I had some artwork that Grace is doing now. She does some really great painting of Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and others. Also, some great Alice in Wonderland-type stuff. I think that is one of my next big purchases for my house.
Jefferson Airplane is just so unique and terrific in so many ways. You guys have made me want to go listen to "Martha" or "Lather." Those just popped into my head.

"Have You Seen the Saucers?" first appeared on Thirty Seconds over Winterland which is a live album, and again on their anthology, 2400 Fulton Street. It is written by Paul Kantner during his "I'm Fasinated with Space" period.
"Would You Like a Snack?" is a weird, little song that Grace wrote with Frank Zappa. The only place I have heard it is on their box set, Jefferson Airplane Loves You.
The other two I have never heard. I would love to hear them sometime. That would be too cool.

My father was at Woodstock for 2 days. He still tells the stories to this day if you ask him about it. Although he still isn't "sure" about a lot of what he "remembers."

Ah, sorry, I just saw this. Yes, perhaps you can hear them. Perhaps I could also hear one or two of the Fillmore shows. If you see what I mean. :D
Wow, you have a lot of great stuff. I really like them, but I haven't really explored them excessively. Which is nice, lots of great suprises in store for me. :)

Do they include all of The Doors appearances, too?
And your new avatar is ... well ... precious! I can't wait till all the Malcolm seasons are on DVD - I *must* have Bea Arthur's episode. "Can you hear the drums, Fernando?" *THUD*

Nope. :( It has:
David Bowie
David Crosby
George Harrison
Jefferson Airplane
Janis Joplin
Joni Mitchell
Ravi Shankar
Paul Simon
Sly and the Family Stone (PRICELESS!)
Stephen Stills
Stevie Wonder
Gary Wright

That's the first season finale (the one where Bea Arthur babysat Dewey while everyone else went to the waterpark and Malcolm pushed Lois down the slide) and the first season IS on DVD. Tons of extras, too. I read that the reason the other seasons haven't been released yet is because they're having a hard time getting the rights to the music. That's what held up Moonlighting for so long, but it's understandable considering that most networks never thought any of this stuff would be released like this.

I picked it up at Circuit City, but I'm sure Amazon has it. I think I paid $30 for it, which isn't too bad, imo.

"Would You Like a Snack?" is a weird, little song that Grace wrote with Frank Zappa. The only place I have heard it is on their box set, Jefferson Airplane Loves You.
It's also on the remaster of After Bathing At Baxters. One of the BEST ALBUMS EVER
Volunteers is another great one though, I love Airplane's version of Wooden Ships. Kantner co-wrote it with Stills. Eskimo Blue Day is probably one of the best on the album. I love that line:
"Say it plainly, the human name, doesn't mean **** to a tree" :]
Crown of Creation, there all good. Kantner's In Time is my favorite on this album. or Grace's version of Crosby's Triad. Awsome.
