View Full Version : Drink of choice?

Currently, I'm fixated on Jack and Coke. However, we do not have Jack Daniels at the moment, but we do have Seagram's V.O. Imported Whiskey, which suffices as a substitute.
Anyway, what is your drink of choice?

yeah, I'll have all that. :wavey:
I like Jack and Coke, too. But I'm...pretty flexible. And? this sounds stupid, but my favorite cheap whiskey is...Black Velvet. Sure, i like the song, but that's not what it's about. It's a strange whiskey, it hardly has any taste. Try it if you get the chance.
Otherwise....
really good tequila shots are great.
white russians are good if you are hungry.
I.Love.Bloody.Marys. Especially if one of the veggies is a long bean. Oh, so good!
good vodka, chilled, in a tiny shooter glass, with an olive.
I hate Gin.
seven and seven is always serviceable. Even better is seven and seven with pineapple.
sex with a goat - it's a shooter, it's pink, and look out, when you are done with it. So sweet, so deadly.
mmkay, that's good for now.

How about Jack Adams? That's a great drink. You just have to sink your fangs into my flesh and draw the blood.
My favourite drink however is the water that washes down the valium, or the vicodin if I'm lucky.

My "why I hate gin" story is gross, to, but perhaps not as bad as yours. Mine is completely from my twenty first birthday in Chico. It's been...10 years? And i haven't had any since.
Actually, now I can't imagine how yours is...if it's too nasty to be repeated...

I'm a wine person. I'm big on Sangria.
I also like a good margarita (not the frozen kind, though--something about that annoys me) and also a good Kahlua mudslide, though the store bought ones are not nearly as good as the ones I've gotten in restaurants. Maybe that's how these things generally work.

I'm in a beer phase right now, which is probably better than my drink to the point of intoxication every night hard liquor phase. Viva La Old Style.
I drink martinis at home- lemon drop, cosmos, apple- or vodka cranberrys or Jim & Coke. If I'm out, I drink beer or vodka gimlets. I cannot make myself a good gimlet for the life of me.

Totally depends on my mood...
Sitting on a patio on a hot summer day, a nice cold beer (Keith's or Corona) or a frozen Margarita (mmm... any flavour: raspberry, mango, strawberry)...
White wine... a good dry Riesling, perfectly chilled.
In the winter, sitting in front of the fire: Red wine - Masi Campoforin. Like red velvet going down.
Love that vanilla vodka - mix it with orange juice and you have your very own little alcoholic creamsicle.
These days.... poverty beer. Buck-a-beer. $24 for a case of 24 for me and my locked-out/labour dispute friends. No income, but we can still have some cheap fun.

Wine, wine and more wine! I looooove Chardonnay, but drink reds on occasion, too. My favorites are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Otherwise, it's gin and tonic and margaritas, rarely. 99.9% of the time it's wine for me. Unfortunately it's very expensive to drink wine out. But I love it anyway.

Last nite I went to Cuchi Cuchi and they make amazing martinis. I had a Dancing with Ginger and a Sugar Daddy from Miami. :D Also a strawberry basil martini. Yum. Depends on my mood...I drink about .000005% of what I used to...but I still indulge on the rare occasion...like when the sun goes down (hey, there's a song in there somewhere).
On the rocks/highballs:
Vodka/Cranberry Juice (aka "Cape Cod")
Rum/Coke ("Cuba Libre")
Malibu/Pineapple Juice
Vodka/Pink Lemonade (w/a splash of apricot schnapps to cut the bite of the lemonade)
Cadillac Margaritas
Vodka Gimlets (shaken, not stirred)
Sour Apple Martini
Gin & Tonic
Vodka Tonic
Vodka/Kailua ("Black Russian")
Vodka/Midori ("Melon Ball")
Tequila/Kailua ("Brave Bull")
Tequila/OJ
Vodka/OJ ("Screwdriver")
Mai Tai (ok, my masculinity is not threatened by the liking of tropical drinks that are served with little umbrellas! :) )
Sambuca (served in a snifter with three...and only three...coffee beans)
AMF ("adios, motherf...", well, you know the rest...served exclusively at the Studio Cafe in Newport Beach, CA...on the rocks...made with about 8 different alcohols...blue curacao being what gives the blue color...tastes like lemonade...the bar won't serve the same person more than two.)
(no bourbon or whiskey...they make me a "mean drunk" :o ...usually, I'm a "happy drunk" :) )
Shots:
Jaegermeister
Tequila
Butterscotch Schnapps/Bailey's
Goldschlager
B-52's (Bailey's/Kailua/Grand Marnier...ever so carefully poured, so you can see each layer of liqueur)
Ouzo (or Metaxa)
Blended:
Pina Coladas
Margaritas
Strawberry Daquiris
Wine:
Charles Shaw Merlot
Charles Shaw Cabernet Savignon (aka "Two-Buck Chuck"...since Trader Joe's sells these for $1.99 a bottle...but, it tastes like a $12 bottle of cab-sav)
Beringer White Zinfandel
Blue Nun (in honor of Christine McVie!)
Beer:
Newcastle
MGD
Pabst Blue Ribbon (ONLY in a schooner, ONLY from the tap at Joe Jost's bar in Long Beach...founded in 1924)
Moosehead
Beck's Dark
St. Pauli Girl Dark
Molson Canadian
Labatt's Blue
(and the occasional) Guinness Stout
Michelob DARK
And...yeah, I DO like Zima, what of it?
But, mostly, I'm hooked on those Lo-Carb Monster (the blue lettering) energy drinks...especially since I've SERIOUSLY cut back on my Diet Coke intake, as well (I have about 4 cans a WEEK; used to be a 12-pk a DAY!)
And...gimme water...cool, clear water...as long as it is Crystal Geyser.

Non alcoholic - water, flavored green teas (iced) and OJ. All three, every day...
Alkie:
Absolut Mandarin (or Stoli Orange) and cranberry
Herradura Silver margs on the rocks, NO salt
For shots, I like Herradura Silver or Patron, but I sip 'em, like mini-shots.
As much as I do not like licorice, I do enjoy the occasional shot of Jaegermeister. Goldschlager's another good one...and again, I sip, I don't "slam."
Merlots-pretty much any brand, I'm not picky. I'm partial to the Aussie ones right now, especially the Penguin!
I like an ice cold beer in a frosty mug right after I've mowed the lawn. Other than that, I'm not a big fan of beer, makes me have to pee too often. But if I'm someplace where all they have is beer and wine, I'll drink it!

My stomach turns when I think of the smell of bourbon...which is oftentimes also the smell of my grandmother's breath.
Being around (rather abusive) drunken grandparents when I was little has left me with a permanent aversion to alcohol, drunkeness, and drunk people. :(

OMG - Vodka...*barf* I had a baaaaaad experience with Vodka several years ago - my stomach STILL turns just thinking about the stuff.....
That's me with Gin, and also peppermint schnapps. :distress: I got a little too sick on both.
Favorite liquor- Rum, plain or vanilla, with coke, sprite, or cran.
Vodka- good utility liquor. Good for spiking up anything. I make my homeade version of mudslides at home. Ice cream, vodka, chocolate syrup, and a little kahlua. Mmmmm.
Beer. I've drank beer my whole life(and still do, when I'm out, cuz it's cheap, and I'm more able to monitor my buzz, in order to......get home). But beer's just to bloaty for me anymore. I don't enjoy it as much as I used to.
At home, wine is fine, all the time. Reds only.
Whiskey, I've never been much on. It REALLY does give you a ****ty attitude, and I'm strictly a fun drunk(kicking ass at pool, and "trying" to make everyone laugh), so whiskey's not on my menu.
I will be drinking Beck's dark tonight, as I'm working, and that's the best import they will give us. Free alcohol rulez.

:( Yeah - that would do it.
My grandparents were alcholics/big partiers....my mom and her siblings have awful stories of their upbringings...
By the time I came around they'd calmed down a bit - though I do remember lots of drunken poolside parties and such...I just thought my grandparents were funner than the average grandparents...now I look back and damn..they were just hard core...they're paying for it all now though in their old age :distress:

Fun is the last word to use to describe my grandmother. If she'd been a fun drunk, maybe it wouldn't have been so bad. She was more of a "hide in the bathroom with a bottle of Old Crow and a handful of muscle relaxers" kind of a drunk.
Then she'd come out, try to eat something, and nearly choke on it because she'd taken so many muscle relaxers that she couldn't swallow. :distress:

Living in any kind of situation with an active alcoholic sucks BIG TIME :distress:
I never thought that I would find myself in that kind of situation, but right now, I do. And I need to make a decision about how/when/if to leave . . . the hard part is not wanting to abandon someone that you love because they are sick.
Alcoholism is devestating to not only the addict, but also the generations that follow. My grandfather died from the disease, and I always heard such nasty stories from my mother about him and his drinking. As a result, any kind of alcohol was demonized in my home as a kid. My mother judges people who have this kind of addiction, so its not exactly something that I talk about with any of my family, which makes it even more difficult.
Sorry for going off topic - I guess I need to get myself to an alanon meeting.

My Dad became mean to my mother when he was drinking. He was also very nasty to all of us when he was hung over, which was every Sat and Sun. He stopped when I was 11 and had 19 years of sobriety until my Mom left him and now he gets "loaded" (my brother's word) a few nights a week on beer. Its very sad and I'm so worried about him. Perhaps I also need an Al Anon meeting! I've been to them before and found them helpful.
I'm sorry you are going through this. You will get through it and be happy though. It will work out. Through the higher power that they talk so highly of. "Expect a miracle". Take care of yourself.

Yes, it is VERY heavy right now - and I have been appointed "point person" by his family to contact a professional interventionist (they all live out of state). When it is literally a matter of life or death of your loved one, is there really any other choice but to try everything? It is just so devestating when no matter how much you love them or how much you do for them, their world still revolves around their addiction, and they will sacrifice everything in their life to keep drinking. :(
Of course, I appreciate everyone's encouragement on this. One of the best things is knowing that you aren't alone, which is why alanon is so helpful. Thanks to everyone.

Yes, I have read a ton of books about this topic and others, and that is one of the most maddening things . . . because you can possess the intellect and the knowledge to know what you need to do . . . but that doesn't always keep the heart from wanting what it wants.
With my career as a divorce lawyer, I know the risks and problems that come from addiction. And yet, it did not stop me from falling in love with someone who was an addict. It makes no sense, and is very frustrating. Many times I feel stupid and like a hypocrite.

Well, though there are schools of thought on this, the addiction is only one part of him  Hopefully, things will get better and all the good things will shine again instead of being eclipsed by the one big bad thing. In the end, not everyone leaves an addict spouse. Many stay and their help is what gets them through it - but, only you know your limit - so trust your instinct.

http://www.recipes4us.co.uk/Desserts%20and%20Puddings/baileys_ice_cream____veg__cd__dp.htm
Baileys Ice Cream Veg CD DP 10mins plus cooling and freezing
Serves 4-6 Vegetarian Cold Dessert Ices
Ingredients
300ml/10fl.oz. Milk
125g/5oz Sugar
1tsp vanilla extract
300ml/10fl.oz Whipping cream
120ml/4fl.oz. Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur
Instructions
1. Place the milk, vanilla and sugar in a saucepan and heat over a medium heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and cool.
2. In a large measuring jug, whip the cream until slightly thickened then add the cooled milk mixture and mix well. Chill for 1 hour.
3. Add the Baileys Irish Cream to the chilled milk mixtures and mix well. Pour into an ice cream maker and freeze churn for 30 – 40 minutes or according to the manufacturers directions. Alternatively, turn the mixture into a rigid freezer-proof container and freeze, removing from the freezer every 20 minutes or so and beating well with a wooden spoon to break up any ice particles.

If you're a fan of white, have I got a wine for you! Its a Canadian VQA wine, Gray Monk Pinot Blanc. Sooooo good. Very apricot-y, crisp, not too sweet. A perfect summer white wine. And I'm with you on the red...not so much for the blood reference, but it gives me headaches. Although I'm not so sure I'll look at red wine in the same way again.....

I will check out this book. I have read tons of codependency books, but dealing with a loved one who is an addict is a "special" class all its own, I think.
In any event, I am about 90% sure that I am moving out this weekend. My boyfriend just returned from a 10 day trip to Alaska last night at 6 p.m. and was drunk and disorderly by 10 p.m. And for the first time, put his hands on me in an aggressive manner. No way I am sticking this one out until his intervention because his anger is clearly spinning out of control. I was out apartment hunting today, which is a positive step for me in getting the focus back on myself and my needs.

Okay, now I am worried. I'm glad you are taking positive steps to take care of yourself. This book will really be eye opening. My mother read it and it was for her. She has a very hard time putting the focus on herself but this helped. You've got to love and respect yourself first and foremost. Also, I assumed that you were married but you are not which tells me you definitely must get the book since you even thought twice about leaving.
Take good care of yourself. It sounds like his bottom is coming very soon and then it is up to him and his higher power to get better.

To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a Support Group.
Salvation in a can!

with members of the opposite sex without spitting.

One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining
the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm.
Here's how it went:
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only
move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is
hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that
are killed first This natural selection is good for the herd as
a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole
group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest
members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as
fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as
we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest
and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption
of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a
faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel
smarter after a few beers."

Non-alc:
Water
Diet Pepsi (plain, or cherry or lime)
Iced Tea (from a powder mix - Crystal Light usually)
Alcohol:
Beer - Labatt Blue Light or Amstel Light, preferably. I rarely drink anything else, but if I do, I like:
White Russian
Screwdriver
Fuzzy Navel
Frozen Margarita w/ lots of salt on the rim
Frozen Mudslide
Whiskey Sour
Suze's Chocolatini at the Cheesecake Factory
Although I hate tomato juice, I had the best drink of my life at the Luxor in Vegas in 2000. That Bloody Mary to die for.
Things I can no longer drink due to past overindulgance, causing me to become very ill:
Southern Comfort. Have not been able to touch this vile stuff due to an unfortunate incident at age 16. I'll spare you the details other than to say there was a lot of vomit involved.
Das Comet (the vanilla version of Rumplemintz) Another unfortunate incident, this time at age 25 or so. Lots of vomit, plus sleeping on friend's bathroom floor.
Slivovitz. I shudder merely at the smell of it.
