With the recent discussions of the sketches and paintings of Stevie that have been up for auction on eBay, and the outrageous prices attached to them, I was wondering what everyone thought of this sketch....

i like it...it's sexy :) the detail with the hair is wonderful...and the lips nose...bingo...the eyes are one of the better sets ive seen...however it must be me but i dont think ive seen one where someonecaptures those glorious pools...but as i mentioned this certainly captures them very closely.

I think it's decent but a tiny bit lopsided-looking, especially in the eyes. It is very difficult to capture the essence of a person in a portrait from looking at a photograph. People can look at a picture and then take their pencil and start drawing it and get very close to reproducing it by simply shading where they see dark and leaving alone where they see light, but does this capture the essence of a person? And furthermore, is it an artistic endeavor?

When I first got "obsessed" with Stevie I did some pencil sketches by looking at photos of her, and although I got a lot of compliments on them and was even able to trade some of them for actual Stevie items (by doing a Johanna Pietermann type thing and sketching people "with" Stevie, LOL), I sort of cringe now when I look at my "work." It's just not art as far as I'm concerned. But oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

And that sketch is pretty good for what it is!

I think its pretty good, it has its flaws, but it does have promise, who ever the artist is....

There is also a big difference in the way certain artists use photos to capture their subjects... yes sketching/painting someone in person does take on a different power, the brush strokes are wider, the focus turns more towards the weight & color of the flesh, the light & shadow expressed with colors instead of black & white, and likeness is usually not as important. I believe that using photos is fine for likenesses, certain landscapes, still lifes w/ fixed lighting, etc. It is important to capture the essence of the person, & some artists successfully execute this through distortion, exaggeration, or exact likeness. Okay, I'm done rambling now ;)

For anyone interested in art, here's a link to one of my favorite artists, Liz Lomax, she went to my school, then taught there for a while, & she came to speak with us last semester. She's a 3D artist & kicks ass!www.lizlomax.com (http://www.lizlomax.com)

I think that sketch is better than the paintings. Also I think that Trackaghost's sketch for the contest was better than the paintings. But, I don't like paintings like that, and I don't like Joanna Peterman's work! There, I said it!
There was a girl on here some time ago who did a really great black ink thing of stevie....that was good...I was almost considering it for a tattoo, it was so good. I'll try to find it.
So, yeah, I think that sketch captures the Steve-ster very well. One note, her eyes look like they are not quite focused on the same thing, or are slightly crossed, or something. But....I know how hard that is to capture...so...

I'll confess... it is one of my sketches actually. I drew it when I was around 19 years old ("that was a long time ago....").

Didn't want to say that though when I posted it, because I wanted honest criticism.

When I look at it these days, I agree with Amber that her eyes look a bit crossed. I also think her face is too long.
But I like how her hair came out, if that doesn't sound too conceited.

No intentions of selling it though (not sure that anyone would even want it!), but, heck, if those other sketches/paintings of Stevie fetch a pretty penny, I just might reconsider!

Your work is pretty awesome, Carei... very stylish, very unique, and very STEVIE. :D

As for you my friend, don't ever feel bad about being proud of your work! You were quite young at the time, so of course it looks a little strange to you now, I feel the same way when I look at my work from high school, it amazing how much you can develope within a few years. You should keep up with your art because you do have potential! Take a drawing or painting class if you have the time, or just pick up some stuff at an art store & get started again, you just might surprise yourself!

I'm only 5 foot, doesn't it suck to be short?

I wanted the redish ones real bad, but a 6 might be too big (that's pretty sad!), so I got the other ones. Man was it hard to pick! Maybe my foot will grow by Christmas

I think that is beautiful. Some drawings I see I cannot tell "who" "who" it is supposed to be, this one, I can not only tell it is Stevie, but I know the photo it was drawn from, really gorgeous!~Barbara

Here are all of my Stevie pieces....the first one is a painting, the others are ink drawings, the last one is a small collage. "Taken By The Sky" is the newest. I sold prints of the first two, back in April. I usually do a Stevie drawing every couple of months, but right now I'm working on character illustrations or crazy stuff from my imagination.... I would LOVE to write & illustrate children's books one day, maybe even animation.....I'd kill to work for Tim Burton!

Thank you so much for posting these again. I just stared at them for about 10 minutes. "Taken By the Sky" is my favorite. So simply and elegant yet so much comes across by this image and so much intensity is portrayed. I love the detail. I seriously got Rhiannon stuck in my head after looking at it lol. They are all magnificent in their own way. You are quite a talent!
I also love the contrast of the deep pink shade and the aqua blue in "dareherwildheart' and look at those eyes! That color blue is breathtaking! I just realized there is a crescent moon in there also. Is it actually on Stevie or did you just add it in there?
How did you make the Stevie collage? Did you scan anything in there? The image of Stevie and the leaves look so authentic. I really really love your work girlfriend!

thanks again :D

"Taken By The Sky" & "The Three Birds of Rhiannon" are done by hand, tiny dots placed all together, the bigger darker areas are filled in. Pink & Blue is my favorite limited palette to use when painting.... pink is "Alizerian Crimsom" (thats totally spelled wrong  ) & that blue you love is called "Brilliant Blue" in the Liquetex brand, I buy a new bottle every year cause i love it so much! The painting was done on masonite (a very thick compressed board, almost like wood) & crescent moon is actually carved into the board, as well as the "wild heart" & the song lyrics. If you look closely, you can make them out~ "Rock a Little" next to her, first line of "Gold & Braid" over the heart, & "Dreams unwind...." to the right. There are also layers of hand made paper under the paint to give the painting texture.

Now for the collage.... its all done by hand (no computer grafics) & mounted on chip board. The materials consist of hand made paper (aqua & Red), fabric (pink), some netting & lace from fabric scraps, the leaf is actually made from paper that I bought at Kate's Paperie in NY, the image of Stevie was tranfered on to the hand made paper by photocopying the image & then using a transfer marker, which stinks up your whole room & makes you dizzy as hell!

I'm really sorry to hear this...Johanna is one of my best friends, and I can't see her doing that. I would recommend contacting her again, as you should either get your tambourine or your money back, I absolutely agree. She has been very ill recently, but I don't think it goes back 8 months ago, and she's doing much better now.

I love Johanna's art, and have a whole page devoted to it on my website. I think she captures Stevie and everything she draws, so well. She drew an amazing portrait of my daughter Rhiannon that we cherish. I also love Trackaghost's beautiful painting ~ her 'Sister Of The Moon' was breathtakingly gorgeous, and I've seen a few other pieces by her, courtesy of Pip, some time ago...a very talented lady. Carei is another fabulous artist ~ she sent me three of her outstanding drawings that are posted on my website...and I welcome anyone who would like their Stevie/Mac art posted with Carei's to feel free to contact me. :wavey:

I don't think I'm ready just yet to sell originals, (except commissioned work), especially this one... its very special to me cause its actually the 2nd time I painted this.... the 1st one was stolen from me in March, coming home for spring break. It was in my suitcase, along w/ another drawing, my dvd player, my favorite Stevie shirt, my Fleetwood Mac dvds & alot of my clothes! Some ass just swiped it before me & my sis got off the bus... I cried for like three days, i was more upset about the painting than anything! Hopefully in the future, I will be able to part with my artwork

I think it's cool, Stew, especially if you drew (that looks weird, is that the right spelling?) it when you were 19. Sure, I can't draw, but still, I know what Stevie looks like. :) Do you draw a lot? I find it very frustrating. sometimes it's okay, though. My mom and my cousin are artists, so luckily that niche is filled in the ol' fam.

I actually get a lot of flack from friends and family, for not doing it more often.

Don't laugh -- I'd actually like to find someone to do some modelling for me. Sometimes it's hard to get down on paper what I'm seeing in my head, without someone posing in front of me.

I have to be really inspired to sketch though... at least these days.

ah. I see. well, that sounds fine.
Why would I laugh about wanting a model? I can only draw things if they're sitting in front of me! hahaha.
It sounds like a great hobby for you. And you do draw well. I think that's good enough. And, when I do draw, I, personally, find it very relaxing and meditative. It's frustrating, too, but not in a bad way, more in the way it makes me concentrate harder, which is still meditative.

do you have any more sketches? I do. I'll have to see about scanning a few of them. Maybe. :o

You'd probably enjoy handtinting, Amber... I did that for a photographer for a while, and I enjoyed it. He was a bit of a bear to work with sometimes though. He would never tell me how he wanted something tinted, but then he'd come back and tell me, "that's not how I wanted it to look."

Yeah, well, I'm not Jeanne Dixon, so tell me what you want!

*hack*
No, I don't think I would enjoy that. But I see what you mean. I really try to do less things where I have to sit still and not talk. :p
look forward to more sketches.
P.S. - when I want to color, I use Stencils...

Speaking of models, i've got a pretty funny story about a female model that posed in one of my classes. It was first year at school & there was this rather large woman who was our model for a whole friggin week! The fact that she was heavy wasn't the actual problem (we draw model of all shapes & sizes), but this lady was so damn weird & annoying! First off, she falls dead asleep on the table, when my teacher was giving us a short lecture, then we're all ready to draw, and she disappears into the bathroom for like 20 minutes! Then she does all these stupid creepy poses... bends over right in front of the only guy in my class, then does a spread-eagle! That poor kid was sooo beside himself.... my teacher kept asking him why he wasn't drawing, he was like, "you don't understand... I can't, I can't draw this!" & tried not to laugh in front of the model, but he couldn't help it! Then she does this long pose, & my teacher sets up all these cushions & sheets for her to sit on this platform.... and when she gets up to take her break after the first set, one of the sheets got caught between her ass crack & she starts dragging the whole sheet across the room! Oh God, what a week that was!

:wavey: Thank You! You are both more than welcome to purchase a print of the painting anytime you like.

How much for a print? And what size is it? I would love to buy one, but I'm a little on the dirt poor side. Would you consider a trade for some bootlegs or something? If not I understand, but if you are interested my collection is the link above my sig. Or just let me know what you'd want for one.

BTW....that is terrible about your stuff getting stolen. I would have been devastated as well. :( I'm glad you were able to recreate your painting though! I love it!

With the recent discussions of the sketches and paintings of Stevie that have been up for auction on eBay, and the outrageous prices attached to them, I was wondering what everyone thought of this sketch....
