View Full Version : Why does every gay man HAVE to love Cher or Madonna?

DavidMn
08-16-2005, 08:13 PM
I was at our local gay establishment the other night here in town called The Saloon, and I got into a conversation with someone about "being gay." The bar was throwing a Madonna birthday party, and I told him that it really didnt have much interest for me. He retorted, "How can you be gay and not love Madonna or Cher?" It really made me mad, and this goes for everyone, straight or gay. Where has the individualism gone? I'm not criticizing anyone who is a big fan of either lady, I actually dont mind them, but this whole notion of every gay man having to do this or look like that really irks me. My interest in Stevie for example has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a homosexual. It's because she has touched my heart, nothing else. I dont try to be anyone but myself, and if that's not good enough for people, too bad, I'm not sacrificing my soul for someones idea of what I should be.

I've asked the same before.I have no explanation. Just because I'm gay and happen to like Madonna, it doesnt mean those things are connected.

Well, I guess it is the same thing with straight guys. How can you be a straight man and not love watching sports?

How can you be a straight woman and not love shopping for shoes?

It's not just gay men that get stereotyped. It's everyone...

...well....many gay men love camp and outrageousness. Madonna and Cher are campy and outrageous, alot. It's that simple. I...don't much care for Cher, and am quite burnt out.....I live next to a gay bar, and I hear Cher blaring off of their patio at least 12-18 times a day. No joke. At least 6 of those 12-18 times is the song Believe.

Yeah, I got it. I am waaayyyyyyy to old to qualify for that line. You need to be talking to somebody like Curtis or Brian LiquidBluey.... I'm old enough to be Ryan's father for chrissakes.

Anycrap- onto the topic of this thread.

Cher?? Meh. She's never really done anything for me one way or the other. As far as I'm concerned she's only had ONE good song in her entire career, "Heart of Stone"- and even that one isn't comparable to Stevie's minor-middling stuff. Her voice is great, but she doesn't write and her choices of material over the years borderline on laughable.

Madonna? She's hit and miss. I have grown up with that chick during all my teenage/adult life. Her first album? "Lucky Star" is about all there is. Like A Virgin? Meh. True Blue? Okay- a little too poppy. Like A Prayer??? Now, we're getting somewhere. "Express Yourself" kicks ass and the title track is stirring. Then we get The Best Of, with "Vogue" and "Rescue Me"- two of her best dancefloor tracks, ever. Erotica and Bedtime Stories are her bookend best albums. And then it all goes downhill from there.

"Frozen" is the only thang on that sucker that comes close to good.

Madonna's two biggest problems are her weak voice and her extremely weak lyric writing. Ray of Light was her 12-year-old diary writing / straining-to-come-up-with-something-coherent at it's worst. Her lyric writing works well for stuff like "Cherish"- but, trying to become transcendental was a big, big mistake. And then she had to top it all off with the fake British accent... Voila!!! Instant irritant.

I disagree and think Ray of Light - lyrics and delivery - are brilliant. I do think though that the vocal could NEVER be repeated live and thus, my problem with Madonna, though I liked her Drowned World Tour. But, even then, I was so close that I could hear what was coming out of her mouth and it was altered before it hit the speakers. Many joked about her million dollar mic. I think in the end, Madonna is a tremendous talent and I like her, but a stellar vocalist she is not. I will say that she has gotten better.

And - do not get me started on her key of C because I cannot sing any flats of sharp Minnie Mouse version of Evita - though I loved the movie and even her in it.

Sometimes I just want to listen to some ear candy (believe it or not), and Cher provides some fun ear candy.

With Madonna, I'd say I'm a pretty big fan. Though with the last two albums ('Music' and 'American Life'), I basically loved the singles and maybe two more tracks, and that was it.

"This Used To Be My Playground" will always be my all-time favorite Madonna song. Makes me think of my grandmother's house, and it usually brings a tear to my eye.

She was okay in Dick Tracy, but that is part she does not need a lot of acting for. And, she sang Sondhiem there. I give her a solid B or maybe B+ for those vocals, which were somewhat difficult.

As for the movie itself - it was okay.

Sometimes I just want to listen to some ear candy (believe it or not), and Cher provides some fun ear candy.

Cher is great fun. I don't own all of her stuff and never will, but it's great to just pop in her fluff every now and then. My personal favorite is "Just Like Jesse James". Love "Song For the Lonely" and "I Found Someone," too.

Sports are universal. Maybe it's the inferiority thing that some gay men detest about sports. I've pretty much gotten over the fact that I suck, and I now have just as much fun watching people play instead of me. :laugh:I'm the least athletic person you could hope to find. But I've always said that if you can't be an athlete, then be an athletic supporter!

Ok, ok, so I stole that from Eve Arden in 'Grease,' but Eve was the bomb and 'Grease' was a MUSICAL with OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN, so I, being a gay man, can't help but love it and quote it! ;)

I enjoy hockey and I love watching men's volleyball (EYE CANDY). I don't mind baseball either.
But I have no use for football. It bores me to tears.

FYI - I don't love Cher or Madonna.

I have a soft spot for OLD Cher - "Half Breed", "Gypsies Tramps and Thieves", "Dark Lady", and from her commercial rebirth "I Found Someone" and "We All Sleep Alone" - and whatever video that was where she wore the band aid of chiffon and was on that shipful of hot sailors. I think Cher is a camp and cultural phenomenon, NOT a musical icon. Madonna - feh. A powerful chameleon with an ear for who to copy and which producer to Phuck. It is a well know industry secret that every single song she has writing credit on - she purchased it because she wrote a line or two of lyrics or came up with a tiny melody line. Madonna is NOT a songwriter and everyone in the business knows it.

But, consider this ( You used to be my love  ) - I am not a typical fag. I drive a pickup truck with two dents in it, build **** at my own house, like dirty sweaty guys, and detest cologne and disco music. What do I know ? My gay card was taken away years ago, and I prefer Courtney and Chrissy Hynde to any gay diva, any day of the week. :wavey:

I really like Cher and Madonna. I lean more towards Cher. I am a sucker for good power ballads and I actually like Cher's vocal style. My personal favorites are Just Like Jesse James, I Found Someone, One By One and Music's No Good Without You. When she came to Jackson, I swear that woman was in top form. Her vocals were dead on and the show was a.ma.zing - I always say it is THE best show I've ever seen. It really was and she deserves mucho credit for pulling that show off for so long.

Madonna is cool - you can't not like at least one or two Madonna songs. Again, I lean towards the ballads...This Used To Be My Playground, Love Don't Live Here Anymore, Crazy for You, Power of Goodbye...and a personal fav, Bad Girl (love the song and the video even more).

But, I will always be gaga for Stevie. I like having that one entertainer that you wrap yourself up in and love everything about them. If I were ranking my favs I'd say:

Stevie
Barbra Streisand
Tori Amos
Christina Aguilera
Patti Labelle
Cher
Linda Eder
Sarah Brightman
Mariah Carey
Madonna

These are people I'll buy anything from...DVD, CD...

I'm sure she'll do a farewell tour before she ever hangs it up, don't worry. Her last tour was the best she's ever done (next to Divine Madness), imo, and I was so happy that she brought back the old rock stuff like "Midnight In Memphis". Tickets were outrageously expensive (I spent close to a grand for three shows), but it was obvious why. She had an orchestra, the stage looked like someone had regurgitated Coney Island for her, she produced exclusive video (the Judge Judy mini-movie was PRICELESS), she changed costumes every ten minutes, etc. It was a true spectacle. I'm dying to get my hands on the DVD bootlegs that are out there.

In the meantime, she has that new movie coming out with Cher, Wanda Sykes, and Tim Allen.

Have you forgotten about the "I'm Breathless" album?
I happen to like that album. At least there's no pretense- it is what it is.

When I saw "Dick Tracy" in the theater as a wee lad, I thought she was the **** in it.
My gawd, you're young- and my gawd I'm old.

Honey, Paris has been used so much that her flappy meat curtains now hang over the toilet bowl when she sits down.
Thanks for that! {insert pukey icon here}

I'm one of the few people who LOVE that album. I think it's great fun.
My favorite song is "What Can You Lose?", with "Something to Remember" a very close second.

Ok, ok, so I stole that from Eve Arden in 'Grease,' but Eve was the bomb and 'Grease' was a MUSICAL with OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN, so I, being a gay man, can't help but love it and quote it! ;)
I saw Grease almost every weekday the summer of 1978. I'd get up in the morning, eat a bowl of cereal and watch tee-vee, get cleaned up and walk down to the local theater (the only one in town). Matinee showings were $0.50 for kids. I've always known that I was gay, but that whole Grease worship and my subsequent begging my parents for Donna Summer's double album On The Radio for Xmas pretty much locked down the fact that I am a big, ole fag.

What's scary is that at that time people like Joshua weren't even a spermatazoa in their father's nutsack.

BUT why does every lesbian have to love Ani DiFranco!?!

Voila!!! Instant irritant.I agree with you except I agree with Jason about "Ray of Light." I think it's good and I think "Frozen" is fabulous. I don't like the rest of the CD at all. I got rid of it after awhile.

Plus, I will never forgive her for ruining Sondheim with the whole Dick Tracy thing. I never forgive people for ruining Sondheim, especially Neil Patrick Harris. I also didn't like the way she sang the Evita stuff so I'd say she ruined Webber, too. Those are pretty big accomplishments.

"Welcome to why the church has died

Who owns the land & keeps the commands

Modern scribes write in Jesus Christ

The philosophy of loss

There are a few who would be true out of love
And love is hard
And don't think that our hands haven't shoveled the dirt
Over their central American graveyards

Doctors & witch hunters stripped you bare
Left you nothing for your earthly sins
Yeah but who made this noise just a bunch of boys
And the one with the most toys wins

Who is teaching kids to be gamblers
Life is a coin toss
And of course what you give up is what you gain
The philosophy of loss

Whatever has happened to anyone else
Could happen to you & to me
And the end of my youth was the possible truth
That it all happens randomly

Who is teaching kids to be leaders
and the way that it is meant to be

"Philosophy of Loss" (oooooooooohhhhh, that song gives me shivers)

"Welcome to why the church has died
In the heart of the exiled in the kingdom of hate
Who owns the land & keeps the commands
And marries itself to the state

Modern scribes write in Jesus Christ
Everyone is free
And the doors open wide to all straight men & women
But they are not open to me

And who is teaching kids to be soldiers
To be marked by a plain white cross
And we kill just a little to save a lot more
The philosophy of loss

There are a few who would be true out of love
And love is hard
And don't think that our hands haven't shoveled the dirt
Over their central American graveyards

The Indigo Girls are fantastic. A friend of mine rented their house years ago when they were just becoming famous. I think this is the best thing they have ever written and that is saying a mouthful

Kif Fears

Pain from pearls-hey little girl-
How much have you grown?
Pain from pearls-hey little girl-
Flower for the ones you've known.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your
Kid fears?

Secret staircase, running high,
You had a hiding place.
Secret staircase, running low,
But they all know, now you're inside.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your
Kid fears?

Skipping stones, we know the price now,
Any sin will do.
How much further, if you can spin.
How much further, if you are smooth.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your
Kid fears?

Replace the rent with the stars above.
Replace the need with love.

Replace the anger with the tide.
Replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love.

Replace the rent with the stars above.
Replace the need with love.

Replace the anger with the tide.
Replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love.

Are you on fire,
From the years?
What would you give for your

The only thing is that I saw live in New Orleans and I have to say it was a very unexciting show. I wanted her to do something new, not just literally like a new song (which she did do) but something she hasn't done, but that never happened. Not that she couldn't sing and play, it's just that I guess I prefer her on the album. Besides, she didn't really do anything that I couldn't get from listening to the albums.

There was a time when I loooved Madonna. But that was before I got over the "This is the kind of music that I have to listen to now that I'm gay" phase.I never felt I HAD to like something just because I'm gay... it just turns out that some of the stuff I love/enjoy turned out to be stereotypical of gays.

I loved Stevie and dug Cher and Madonna way before I knew there was any kind of gay connection. I was too sheltered in my tiny little western Pennsylvania town to know about any of that stuff.

Towie's story about Grease and Donna Summer's 'On The Radio' double-album was too funny, because I was obsessed with both when I was little.
Of course, I was also obsessed with Wonder Woman when I was little.

Yet, there are plenty of other stereotypically "gay" things that I'm not the least bit interested in (hair, clothes, having the perfect body, going to all the best restaurants and hippest clubs, laying every hot guy you see), and most of the stereotypical tendencies I have, begin and end with pop culture (music, TV, broadway shows).

I got to raise my hand as one of the few straight male ledgies. Its a freaking lonely club but Oh Well

And to answer some of the questions in this thread, I cant stand either Cher or Madonna, especially Cher. To me, Cher is like the polar oppisitte of Stevie, although for some reason I imagine in Stevie's warped mind shes similar to Cher  Her hair and clothing show disgusts me. Stevie might make a few shawl changes, but it doesnt distract from her rocking show.

And about the sports thing. I love watching pretty much all sports, except Hockey (I was so happy when they had their strike, it meant more space for Basketball and Football) And Im quite decent at playing them too. I wouldnt say Im great, but Im slightly below average to average to very slightly above average depending on the sport. I dont like brag but Im quite the exceptional baseball player

That's really impressive. And aren't you from Louisiana, too? See, it crossed my mind when I was a little younger than twelve, even, but every time it came into my mind I pushed it out fiercely. Everyone around me was saying it was horribly wrong and I really didn't want to be any more "different" than I already was. I didn't come out to myself and everyone else until I was 20.

Sadly, yes, I am from Louisiana. :(

I think I would've known before 12, if I had known what "gay" was. I was very sheltered as a child.

I did go through that phase when I first came out. It was relatively short-lived, though. I guess it's just too hard for me to pretend to like something that I just don't. I used to think that I needed to be reading and buying all those gay and lesbian magazines but then I just got tired of it.I had a few very well-meaning friends who, as soon as I came out, started telling me, "Ok, you have to get your hair cut this way, and start wearing this type of clothing, and buy this brand of underwear, and get yourself more sexual experience, yadda-yadda-yadda."

But that's just not me, and I refused to give in... even then.
Coming out allowed me to finally stop pretending to be something I'm not, so I certainly wasn't going to give up one type of conformity for another.

I never felt I HAD to like something just because I'm gay... it just turns out that some of the stuff I love/enjoy turned out to be stereotypical of gays.

I don't think there's much I like in the way of music that's stereotypically gay, except for my aforementioned fondness for Billie, Ella, Dinah, etc.

Being just a little bit younger than you, these things are mostly before my time. :p

This is why the prospect of being single again is a little daunting for me. I have no interest in clothes, or going to the gym or the clubs, or Paris Hilton. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I didn't live in a college town? I dunno.

Well, I was informed that I was gay at the age of 9 on the playground on numerous occasions. It didn't help that I heard the word "babe" somewhere I promptly declared that one of the female teachers was a "babe." So, I didn't really know what gay was then, but I knew to some degree.

There seem to be a lot of requirements in regards to how we're expected to carry ourselves and how we should dress and where we should hang out.

Right on  So many people DO fall into that - and that is what perpetuates the stereotype...

I had a friend who was just your average run of the mill guy's guy - well he came out and that all went to hell - now he's the biggest flamer out there - he won't even associate with anything NOT gay  It's sad - and he's miserable and yada yada yada - you gotta be true to yourself.

Another good friend of mine - is gay. BUT he's never been anything but true to himself -he rebuilt a 1969 Mustang pretty much from scratch - all he had was the frame - he rebuilt a 1977 Harley motorcycle...but then he could turn around and give me a fabulous haircut  His gay friends would DIE when he'd run out to the store all dirty and greasy from his car....:p

If I hadn't been in such deep denial, I would have known right then and there that I was gay... no offense to the ladies here, but it was yucky! :laugh:Sadly, I have no stories like this because I have never kissed anyone. :distress: But, back in high school, when I was hopelessly depressed, one of the really popular guys, a complete hunk, asked me to dance at one of the school dances. I had no idea how to dance. He sweet-talked me and all and he was fine. That was quite an enjoyable moment, but then I have to admit that I would've preferred this really beautiful brunette from my English class. Oddly enough, he wound up going to my university and we both worked on fly together for a musical. (He's actually a straight guy who does theatre! ). He had actually considered me bisexual all along. He thought it was hilarious that I was totally gay for some reason.

When I first came out - in high school - I did try to fit in - chopped all my hair off - bought bigger pants - wore a wallet with a chain  When I got to college and realized what rubbish trying to live up to a dyke stereotype was I started coming more into my own - BUT when I grew my hair out women completely and totally stopped hitting on me.

Ditto to everything! Even the film festival. I'm actually going to my first gay/lesbian film festival not too long from now. :woohoo: Anyway, yeah, I'm not attracted to butch girls. And me, being the stubborn Italian/Englishman that I am, refused to settle for one extreme or the other.

Oh, that must have been scary. I'm so sorry that happened to you, and so glad that nothing else happened and that you're okay! :xoxo:Thanks, sweetie. :xoxo:

It could have been MUCH worse, so I lucked out that my wakeup call wasn't too harsh. Just enough to teach me to be more selective about who I give out my personal information to. Of course, I probably still give out a little too much info.

Funny thing is, AFTER it happened, several guys from around here who knew him, told me to stay away from him, that he was unbalanced (he must have been, if he wanted to sleep with me! ). Where were these guys BEFORE I started getting to know him!

THAT is extremely hard to find.

Well, I'm probably really up sh*t creek then, because I've also decided that I'm not dating anymore atheists/agnostics, or Libertarians. How's that for thinning the herd?

Well, some may disagree, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with being selective when dating.

Same with guys dressing up like women every other day. I don't understand it, but if they enjoy it...more power to them. I just don't find that attractive.
Amen. If I wanted a woman, I'd date one. LOL JK

We don't really have prizes or anything. If we did, I would've got one.
But you have a "great job!" from me.

Thank you very much. I guess I was just trying to make the point that I try to get into things because they mean something personal to me, not because of this "Mob" mentality. I find that more fulfilling for me I guess. for whatever thats worth :D

I'm not sure how that relates to your comment, but I appreciate the sentiment none the less.
