There's an interview with Victoria Beckham in the newspaper today where she confesses she has never read a book.
She says: "I haven't read a book in my life, I haven't enough time. I prefer to listen to music, although I do love fashion magazines."
Does this mean she hasn't read her own autobiography Learning To Fly or her husband David Beckham's autobiography My Side?
Does anyone else think this is rather weird. I mean how the hell did she get through school without ever reading a book? She almost appears to be boasting about it too.

Ugh - that is disgusting. Just disgusting.
I hate that - I knew a guy in a college class who also bragged that he'd never read a book - and how did he get through class? He made friends with all the stupid cutesy girls - and they'd let him copy their stuff - and sit next to him during tests
How can one "write" a book if one's never read one?? Stupid posh spice.
Actually - that's a bit sad...her loss though.

It is sad isn't it? I mean how much she misses!
I would just be embarrassed to admit that, especially seeing as she has written a book herself, although saying that, it probably had a ghost writer.

I hate it when people who've never read a book are rich and famous. But, you know, like she said, it does free up a lot of time and brain space, within which to get rich and famous.

Seriously - I wouldn't want to admit that!
Her book almost certainly had a ghost writer and someone who's never read a book could not possibly write one worth anything. I don't think she'd pick up mad writing skills from fashion magazines

Isn't she embarrassed?
I always thought she was a twit, but I never knew the extent of how uneductated the twit is.
Is anybody REALLY surprised by this news? She's never stuck me as even marginally educated.

I'm not so much surprised by it, but I'm surprised she admits it. I'd be embarrassed, I mean she has two kids!

It always surprises me when people say they've never even read one book :distress:
I know not everyone loves to read - but come on - never reading a book? That's just sad.

Evidently she HAS learned how to put on makeup and spread her legs. From what I have seen and heard about her, that pretty much takes care of the main things she appears to be put on this earth to do.

Of course she has read a book. How could she get through any education past third grade, which she apparently has. So, that is pish posh  I think a more accurate statement would be she has not read on in a long, long time - probably since high school.

You're probably right on that one. Still, what I don't get, is why she seems almost boastful about it. I think we're probably all a little confused about that.

I've never been a fan of hers or her husband.

She has? News to me. She looks like England's answer to Bobo the Clown.
and spread her legs.
Naturally. She would have to learn how to do that, considering how rich and famous she got without one iota of talent.

I dunno, there was a report not long ago that revealed a certain percentage of students got through so many years of school without even learning to read!
I reckon you could fake reading a whole book easily enough while at school by just writing from your notes and from your friends. It's also pretty shady what Posh's qualifications are.
But anyway, this is all beside the point. I just can't understand why she would admit that in an interview. It's not something to be proud of, doesn't she realise that? What an airhead.

I can believe that she read books in elementary school but then found ways to avoid reading them afterward. I certainly knew people in high school who read Sparknotes, etc. and the backcovers of books and somehow wrote essays on them for tests. That has always baffled me. Maybe she hasn't read her own autobiography. Maybe she just dictated it to a ghost writer and that person actually wrote it.
I still can't believe she would admit such a thing, though.
When the Spice Girls came out, I was a huge fan, but I never got into her at all. First off, I wouldn't be drawn to one who is known for...being posh? To me it seems that they couldn't think of what she was to represent when the others actually had personalities. God knows Geri and the Melanies were big on personality. I watched plenty of interviews and that crazy movie they made and I have to say that she always came off as the least intelligent of all of them. Also, she seemed to be the worst singer of the bunch, and there was some stiff competition for that, especially after seeing them perform "Say You'll Be There" on "Saturday Night Live" with Mel C belting "I've given you everything!!!" flat as a board.

Yeah - I don't think (sadly) that is all that hard NOT to read books and still pass in school - I mean maybe these folks aren't straight A students...but in high school? I didn't read a few of the books we were supposed to - and in college I took one class that I HATED - I didn't read one of the books we were supposed to (they were novels) and I managed to get a C in the class
I'm embarassed to admit even that - but it's possible..and the dude I mentioned in an above post..I just don't think it's all that hard to BS your way through the education system.

I agree, she was always my least favorite, and she sucked. And Mel...uh....scary spice was awesome.

Yes, I feel so much better about admitting to it after reading this thread. I haven't read a book in 8 years and back when I did it was a big deal to me and one of only a few I'd ever read. It being Catcher In The Rye took me many occasions to get through. Small newspaper articles are ok but even the larger ones are incredibly hard to read. I passed school never reading the books but I certainly tried to. It's an attention thing, films are about the maximum I can stand but if viewed at home it's always in about five parts. I don't like fashion magazines or really any magazines but I did try to read the Lindsey article from Acoustic Guitar (something you would imagine would spark my interest) and it took me quite a few sessions. I can't even read most of the articles you guys post here, if I persist it makes me literally restless ( to the point of drawing blood from my scalp) and I can easily start hyperventilating. Dammit, this post has consisted of two breaks even.
Lux, I can never tell when you're being serious, but if you are, your situation sounds entirely different to Victoria Beckham's to me, as you are obviously one of the most intelligent people on here.
I just found it odd that Victoria Beckham appeared to be boasting about it that's all.

Ah, the artifice was a success! No it's ok, not anyhing you said. But still, regardless of cause, the resulting situation is the same in that I'm still one of those sad people who bluffed their way through the education system. In an indirect way I was made to leave university because of it and I've encounted a number of avid readers who think their reading is so high and mighty in comparison to the despicable nature of never reading. Boasting would be a cause for question for sure, it's just annoying as the claim itself is treated as disgusting.
You're right, of course. I really don't mean to look down on anyone who doesn't read, so I'm sorry if it came across that way.
I think I just have a problem with Victoria Beckham in general (and those like her) and how she embraces the superficial. You know, of course she doesn't want to read a book when she can be reading a fashion magazine. She has time to go shopping every day for designer clothes, work on her fake tan and to take part in another publicity stunt though. It's quite a sad example to be setting for her kids in a way.
Does that make sense? I'm probably rambling now...

Do you need a book to learn that ;)
I knew it, underneath the black wig she is a blond ;)
