Is it just me or do Dolly Parton's beautiful soft love songs nearly bring anyone else tears? She has such a beautiful sad quiver in her voice. I'm listening to "But You Know that I Love You" right now. Sigh...

I am so into Dolly. Dolly rules. She is on tour this summer/fall and I am so there. Hopefully LA and Vegas. Her voice hasn't changed a bit, and her show is so much fun. On top of that, she just keeps on cranking out records at the rate of about 1 a year. Pity about all the surgery, she has gone a little too far on the mouth, but I love her anyway. Her "Stairway To Heaven" is pure eargasm material.

Yeah, she's for sure had too much work done!
I wish I could swing seeing her on her tour! She's playing Toronto. I'd love to see her. Vegas would be great! But I can't do it. I have to save my pennies now. Sigh...

I love Dolly. Heartbreaker and Here You Come Again always get me. If any of you get a chance to see or hear the Crossroads special with Dolly and Melissa Ethridge, I highly recommend it. Dolly tears up Bring Me Some Water.

My Mom used to go to the same church as Dolly before she was famous. They weren't close friends, just acquaintances. But I remember growing up in Knoxville, TN, seeing her commercials for grocery stores (her first benefactor), and the first Dolly variety show on Saturday afternoons.
I've also been to Dollywood, and if you haven't been - GO!!!!
The song that always gets me is on the Dolly in London show ... oh crap ... pothole ... something like "Down From Dover"? AND, I just got the new Scissor Sisters DVD, and they play "Baby I'm Burnin' " to warm up the crowd. And you've never seen queens freak out like that British crowd does dancing to some Dolly disco...

I second that. I was watching really late night TV a month or so back, and a bad Dolly Parton movie came on. I watched, and every time she started singing, it brought tears to my eyes.
But I've always loved her voice.

Her autobiography was a blast to read and she seems like SUCH a darling person...I would just love to sit and chat with her for hours.
I told my BF that we should go to Dollywood next year...I think it would be a blast!

Love Dolly. Used to watch her old variety show with my mom. Her last few bluegrass albums have been really amazing, amongst the best records she's ever put out. The fact that she comes across as such a warm and gentle soul also makes her so insanely lovable.
And Smokey Mountain Christmas? I watch it every year. Love love love it.

One of my all-time favorite country duets EVER is the Porter Wagoner/Dolly Parton duet "Just Someone I Used To Know." It's quite possibly the perfect song.

Are ya'll talking about the short-lived one that was on ABC in the early '90s (or late '80s), or the first one that was a syndicated show in the '70s (that was more in the vein of Hee Haw)?
I've never seen any of those on video anywhere...

I got to meet Dolly when I was a kid. She told me I had the prettiest red hair and was so sweet to me. I still have the autograph she gave me that day. My parents were big country music fans so I grew up listening to her, and Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash, etc. What an amazing voice and an amazing woman!
Anyway, another neat thing about Dolly that a lot of people might not know is that in addition to Dollywood, she also owns these Dixie Stampede . . . well, I can't really describe what they are, but I guess dinner theater with horses is about as close as I can come to it. They are in Myrtle Beach SC, Orlando, FL, Pigeon Forge, TN, and in Bronson Missouri.
In the areas where she has these themeparks and the Dixie Stampedes, her non-profit organization, the Imagination Library gives out free books (1 per month) to children ages 0 to 5 years old. How's that for a great public service? There are no income limits or anything-you just sign your kid up, and once a month, they receive a free, age-appropriate book. What a terrific way to give back to the community and foster the love of reading!

Dolly's cool. I'm not crazy about her pop material from the late '70s and '80s, but I like her earlier work, and her recent bluegrass stuff. Although I don't have Halos & Horns...I can't really stomach God/Christo-centric music. I love Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose album, but that song "God Makes No Mistakes" is so ignorant that it's hilarious, although I'm sure she didn't mean it to be.
Anyway...getting off-topic.
There's a Dolly compilation (not really a best-of) called Mission Chapel Memories that collects her early '70s folky, singer-songwritery country material that I love a lot.

I remember LOVING "Me and Little Andy" growing up. Then about 10-15 years ago I saw her in Houston at the Woodlands (where she did an AMAZING BEYOND WORDS "He's Alive") and actually paid attention to the words...and it's the saddest damn song ever! Drunk and neglecting parents? Kids and dogs dying? I thought it was just about a puppy dog and gingerbread men!
And I swear my aunt used to have a Greatest Hits cassette (the one with the pic of her in the red shirt in the shower) and "Me and Little Andy" was on it. I have that same album on CD though, and it's not on there. :distress: Guess I'll have to download it.
Oh, and the original "I Will Always Love You"...perfection. Not the remake for BLWIT (don't like it nearly as much as the original). By the way, that movie is one of my favorites! The original IWALY is exactly that : perfect. It is so damned sugary and sweet - only Dolly could get away with it - simply because she doesn't have a phony bone in her body (not counting the surgeries... ).
That song literally just breaks my heart. When she closed her shortlived variety show with it every episode, I welled up every single time ! So silly.
Of course the Whitney bastardization is an atorcity to me. I challenge anyone to find a shred of the original melody in her car alarm vocal gymanstics. But, the 3 million Dolly made from it probably helped the last three bluegrass albums happen. So, all is well that ends well.

Me and Little Andy is the saddest damn song ever! My mom, sister and I used to listen to it and all cry! Yeah, it was TOTALLY on the cassette of that Greatest Hits record but not on cd. Weird though. I was in a used record store and they had several copies of the Greatest Hits record (the one you were talking about with the red shirt) and I SWEAR there were different versions of it and one had Me and Little Andy on it.
