When I first got really into Stevie (about 1998), this was a really big song for me. I made a compilation tape to play in my car (no CD player yet) and this was on it. Now, I don't love it quite so much. I don't dislike it, mind you. I've just gotten over it, I guess.
The music is so gentle - love the tinkling piano from Mr. Tench. Same with the vocal - so soft, gentle, very vulnerable. Actually the entire song is like that - really quiet & sedate, yet it packs an emotional punch thanks to the lyrics & the way she delivers them. I don't care for the "anything you want me to do" stuff, too submissive for my taste, but it does match the mood of the song so I can deal.
I LOVELOVELOVE:
"I'm living on dreams and chains"
and
"Well, have you ever been in love, have you touched the soul of someone, did the fear inside you make you turn and run"
I was recently wondering if the "dreams and chains" line is a purposeful reference to her life & career with Mac.
Live? I don't think I'd care to hear this live, to be honest. I don't think she could ever recapture the emotion that's on the album version and it might come off as boring.

I LOVE this song. It's very sweet and I like the way she sings it. I also love the upbeat version.

I love the lyrics to this, and I love the emotion that Stevie puts into the vocal, but for me the music has always taken it from what could have been an amazing song to just a mediocre one. :shrugs: That doesn't mean that I skip it when it comes on, I just don't turn it up or get excited about it.

I think this song is excellent!!! She really brings you in on this song and the vocals are, shall we say, AWESOME. This song could easily bring a tear to my eye.

I enjoy this song but I used to be more into when I first got into Stevie and not so much now. I still appreciate the sense of wistfullness and longing that comes across through Stevie's lyrics and singing.

I love it a lot, but I love the demo I have of it better. Not the upbeat one, the just piano one.

I like this song. Not a favorite. One of the few that I will skip occasionally if I'm listening to the CD.

Eh, I like it a bit. I think "Rock A Little" pulls off the intimacy schtick on RAL much better, but I never skip "ISFTT". It's pleasant.

Not so much. The music is shockingly bad and her vocal is pretty lousy. Some of the lyrics are okay. It's just not a fave of mine.

Bottom Ten for me. For some reason I don't like this vocal or the one on OMBTRARS, but I love the rasp on the song RAL.

I never got into that song, and I think that's due mostly to the vocals, which I just do not like at all.

I like it... the simplicity, the lyrics, and her vocal. I like it when she takes a break from belting it out and sounds fragile. Not a favorite, but good.

I love the song. Vulnerable Stevie vocals are always a favorite of mine.
I do think the "dreams and chains" line is a reference to FM, or perhaps just LB.
I also wonder about the other line you quoted.."have you ever been in love, have you touched the soul of someone, did the fear inside you make you turn and run". Is she talking TO someone, or is she talking about herself. If she is admitting that she runs, it is quite inciteful. I think she is talking about someone else though.

Paula...I am really digging these indepth analysees (how the HELL do you spell that?) of each song. As a result of this thread, I opened my "I" folder to listen to all my versions of ISFTT. I found that instrumental version that I have always really liked...the one that has just a few subtle Sharona backing harmonies being added. Everytime I hear Sharon sing alone, I am struck at how powerful her voice is. She is such a talent and her ability to harmonize with Stevie has MADE several of Stevie's songs.

This song rocks my socks. It's one of her sexiest.
I wish I had the brain power to write more, but I've been up for three days.

Thanks, I'm enjoying reading all the posts from everyone. I wanted to explore each song in a bit more detail, as opposed to just saying "I like this song" & all that. I want to know WHY. :)

""Well, have you ever been in love, have you touched the soul of someone, did the fear inside you make you turn and run"
is one of my favorite lines written by Stevie Nicks or any one for that matter. However, the song is not one of her best. It's in the group of mediocre songs on the RAL album. I'm not crazy about the music although I do love the vocals (they are on par with my favorite RAL vocal era). Just not a favorite by any means. Not a skipper, but not a lover either.

I Sing for the Things is OK, definitely not her best. I think it's one of those filler songs on RAL that, if she'd had a better producer with a strong overall vision for the album, would have been relegated to a B side.

Yay, Paula! I love the bob, too. Another fave? Fire Down Below.... Why? cause it happens up in Vegas, happens in New Orleans, on the blue blood Streets of Boston, Up in Berkeley, down in Queens.....

I cant stand this song, but it's just my opinion :)
I don't care for this "song" that much, but I adore her vocals on it...the sound of the vibrato, and the tone, and the "little girl innocence" mixed with "I am just so tired" tough life sound...very touching.
