View Full Version : Holy crap, I finally finished my Master's.

Well, today I took my final exam in topology, the last math class I needed to graduate w/ a master's in math (with an emphasis in math education). I can't believe it's actually over, since I started the program in freakin' 2001  . But I ended up getting certified and getting a full-time job before I finished, so I had to go part-time.
Anyway, it feels weird to actually be done. Like, no more classes after teaching a full day of school? No more driving out every day through 15 miles or so of cornfields? No more comprehensive exams? It's a little bittersweet too--I've made a lot of friends in the math department and I'm going to miss them now that I won't be seeing them on a regular basis, working as a teaching assistant in the summers, etc. I hope somehow we'll keep in touch.
Funny story--I was walking up the steps to my apartment today and my new neighbor Jessica was walking into her place at the same time--we started chatting because she had heard I was a teacher and she's a counselor, and it turns out she just finished up her master's today too!!! LOL So I had to high-five her. :D We probably both attended the same university, for our terms to end on the same day. But still, small world.
Anyway, this was a super boring post :sorry: and I don't expect anyone to care, but it's a milestone for me so I couldn't help it.
Have a great weekend everyone! :o

Can you prove these for me? Been bugging me lately... :p
The Clay Mathematics Institute (http://www.claymath.org/millennium/) of Cambridge, Massachusetts (CMI) has named seven "Millennium Prize Problems," selected by focusing on important classic questions in mathematics that have resisted solution over the years. A $7 million prize fund has been established for the solution to these problems, with $1 million allocated to each. The problems consist of the Riemann hypothesis, Poincaré conjecture, Hodge conjecture, Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture, solution of the Navier-Stokes equations , formulation of Yang-Mills theory , and determination of whether NP-problems are actually P-problems.

That's awesome and something you should really be proud of. I start my master's classes in a couple of weeks and I am so nervous I could puke. I guess it's just because I don't know what to expect, but at the same time I'm excited to further myself hopefully and move in a new direction in the next couple of years.

That is awesome--what is your major going to be in? I was scared at first too, but I got really lucky because the department I joined is very supportive and there's lots of camaraderie, etc. I also wasn't sure, when I first started, whether or not to be a full-time teaching assistant. I didn't know if that would be too overwhelming because I had no idea what to expect. My graduate advisor talked me into it, and I'm so glad he did--you can't beat full paid tuition and a higher salary, and the workload was extremely doable. So if you have that option, definitely go for it. It's fairly impossible if you are working and going to school though, so I don't know if my advice would apply or not.
In any case, best of luck!

I don't think it's boring news at all- Look at some of the other stuff that gets posted-
And like my pal Curtis says "Of course, we care!"
That is EXCELLENT news. I envy people that can "do" math-for when God was giving out talents...I was in the beauty and grace, and modesty line.....haha, :D
Not the math /or science line
So, GREAT news Cricket- Now you can breathe !!!!!

Aw, that is sweet! Don't worry--I won't be counting sheep tonight, :D . But I'm going on an insane road trip starting tomorrow morning, so I might be too nervous/excited to sleep!

My undergrad is in English so I'm going to continue and get my MA in English. I am a full-time paralegal, which has been my career choice until recently I've been thinking about moving into teaching or publishing (my initial career choice). I work and travel a lot so I'm not sure how it's going to work out. I really can't afford to let my job suffer, I really like it and it pays well, but at the same time I don't want to sell myself short and not further my education while I'm young and able to. So...we'll see. Thanks for the advice.

I can't tell if you're only partly serious or not serious at all, . But there are some people on the board (I think?) who are taking math classes (maybe you are too--I dunno) and to be honest, I think it would be sorta fun if people posted their math questions for anyone to try to answer--that is, if they're getting no help in their immediate, physical world and they're truly frustrated... .

Congrats! :xoxo:
I've taken more math classes over the years than I care to think about, and I've spent a lot of time drinking to try to forget them.
My favorite was a Finite Math class, in that it was centered around *actual* business problems, and the problems actually had solutions. The worst? Third semester calculus - completely theoretical and stroke-inducing. "Oh, look! I get it - if you spend 5 hours factoring out this foot-long string of numbers, letters, and symbols, you wind up with a pretty little squiggle on a graph. Well, isn't that special?" :distress:
And don't even get me started on Accounting...
littlecricket2
08-05-2005, 04:36 PM
:o I was a teaching assistant for 2nd semester calculus this past summer, and I kind of despised it. Compared to the theoretical topology stuff we were doing, the calculus actually felt overly computational! I was actually sorta bored w/ integration, figuring out whether a series converges, etc. It's been like, 5 years since I've had 3rd semester calculus. I don't even remember what we did in that class.
My dad has an associate's in accounting so maybe I get the math from him (even though I know and care nothing about accounting)--my mom is a hairdresser.
Totally unrelated: your sig--Tori! I have recently gotten back into her music and I'm going on a mega-long roadtrip this weekend which will culminate in my seeing her live in Atlanta, GA this Monday night. I'm driving from Chicago to Virginia to visit a friend of mine whom I haven't seen in years and who's about to have a baby and having a shower, then I'm driving from Richmond to Atlanta, then driving back up to Chicago! Anyway, have you seen or are you planning to see Tori live at all this summer? :)

No, unfortunately. I'm too poor. I couldn't even afford to go see Stevie here in Houston a few weeks ago. Plus, this Tori tour is solo, and I prefer her with a band. The first show I saw of hers was solo during the Boys for Pele tour, and while beautiful and powerful of course (and I got to hear her version of "Landslide" for the first time), it left me a little unsettled. Dunno why.
But hope you enjoy the show! I hear she's doing lots of covers and rare songs, and there's tons of audience interaction. There was a Ledge review too in the spring, in case you missed it. (Can't remember who posted it - there's so much to keep up with around here!) And have a safe road trip. Was just surfing over the weather channel, and looks like a stormy weekend for a lot of the area you'll be covering.
And do you know about this site? http://www.hereinmyhead.com/sounds Great place to catch up on Tori if you've been outta the loop for a while. They're trying to catch all the covers she performs this tour, plus provide the "best" versions of her regulars. Happy downloading!

Thanks so much for all of the info! Eeek, I'm scared about the weather now though, . I will look at weather.com tonight and see if it still looks that way. I'll drive carefully either way though.
I have all of Tori's official albums (including the Australian/New Zealand import version of Under the Pink which has the 11 b-sides on it), but I haven't heard any bootlegs, etc. I'll try to check that out when I get back (probably no time tonight)! I'm gonna try to write the setlist of the show down too.
P.S. I'm sorry you didn't get to see Stevie or Tori live this year. :( I'm not rollin' in the dough as much as I would like either--which is why I'm driving instead of flying. I checked airline prices, and even with gas prices so high, I'm still saving quite a bit by driving.

AliceLover (Jimmy),
If you're serious, I have to admit that it's really hard to post math problems over the internet (because of all the symbols) and to explain things that way too. But you're certainly welcome to post questions here, and I would try my best! :woohoo: If I could give you some advice though, definitely find out what resources are available to you at your school: when your teacher is free to provide extra help, whether there is a math lab or math resource room where you could get help, etc. If half of my students took advantage of all the extra help available, they all would have gotten better grades! (Well, except for Jessica--StevieNicksEO17--she got A's anyway, and NOT because she's a Stevie/Mac fan, .)

I go to extra help everyday after school for at least an hour. I use that time wisely. Im just one of those people who doesn't get it. When school Starts (sept. 9th) look out for some questions because ill definitely post them! lol
