dogs for me. i have no time for cats. well, not all cats, but most cats. the fact that they have toxic feces and urine (so toxic that pregnant women can't change litter boxes) makes me think "Hmmm... cats are pretty lame!"

I've had both, I love dogs but cats have a special place in my heart. I had to have my kitty Luna put to sleep last year, she was only three but had been through a lot with me over those three years. One of the saddest things I've ever had to do was take her to the vet for the last time. :( Before her, I had another cat, Monkey... she literally died in my arms when she was only six. After those two experiences, I've decided that I'm done with pets. Sheesh... now I'm getting sad. It's amazing the impact a little fur ball can have on your life!

But, I'll go with dogs. I would have one, but my dad is allergic. :(

i hate pet hair. i hate going to people's houses where i know i will walk out covered with full-body canine/feline lanugo. it makes me want to vomit everywhere just so i can have an excuse to go change my clothes.

that being said, i voted 'dog' but i really meant to say 'short haired non-shedding dog.' we had a poodle and he didn't shed, perfect dog.

Neither could I. That's why I "released" mine into the wild (my yard) as soon as possible. We live on 4 acres and the main road is a pretty good distance from my driveway, so they're happy and safe and I'm happy. Even a litter box in the garage made me want to ralph.

That being said, I'm a cat person. This is Aubie.

Cats. There has never been a time in my life when I didn't have at least one and I hope there never will be. I have two right now and they bring me so much joy.

I don't like dogs. They jump on you, they slobber on you, and most importantly... they bite you. Or at least they like to bite me and it's never the pit bulls or rottweilers or any of the breeds that some people have been trying to get banned. A dalmation took a chunk out of my arm, a cocker spaniel chased me down the street, a maltese went for my ankle, a saint bernard tried to rip off my arm, and a golden retriever bloodied my nose.
When I tell people this, they assume that these attacks must've happened while I was at work (used to work for a vet's office) but that's not true. Only the maltese ankle-biting incident was at work. I simply passed by the dalmation and the saint bernard while they were being walked on leash (seperate incidents), the cocker spaniel was loose in my neighborhood and I was trying to get the info off of its tag, and I was petting the retriever after being told by the owner that she was friendly.

Both - I grew up with both & still have both. We had only dogs until I was about 9. My mom always wanted a cat but dad insisted the dogs would never tolerate it.

One day my mom got pissed at my dad & we came home with 2 cats. :D Eventually that grew to 5 cats & 2 dogs - totally out of hand. I swore I would never do that.

Fast forward 10 years - hubby wants a cat. I want a dog. We get Mrs. Bouvier (cat) from the SPCA. My brother finds 4 stray kittens (only a few days old) about a year later & begs us to take one - welcome Cosmo to our family. I still want my dog - we wait until we put up a new fence & adopt Bubba from Second Chance Boxer Rescue. That's it, that's my limit.

I am a cat person. Dogs annoy the **** out of me. They jump on you and chew stuff up, they are hard to train......cats you just show them the litter box and they are done. They are more independant. I am a single working mother and a dog (well, a puppy) would be like having another kid. That's the LAST thing I want right now.

I like them both, although I may like dogs just a little bit better. I have an aunt who once had 13 cats. She lived out in the country, so they stayed outside most of the time. Coyotes have devoured some of them, one was hit by a car, and one got into some ant poison and died. She's down to about 4 or 5 now, I think. All of them are about 20 years old and mean as hell (they take on the personality of their owner, I hear  ).

Aww...my dog doesn't bite, slober or jump  She's a good girl. She's not "licky" either.

And cats are not without fault - they scratch, bite etc...worse than any dog I've ever had - there was this cat who once randomly jumped on my back - then realized it couldn't stay there - so it got the claws out - it was awful.

Some of the worst animal scratches/bites I've had have been from cats - not dogs.

I love both, but I'm more of a cat person. We have the two cats, and we've talked about getting dog, but my husband says we travel too much to have a dog. :( We don't want to board a dog again and don't want to dump it on family when we go away. So for now it's cats. Yes, the litter boxes are a bit gross, but it's worth it. Just the stress relief alone they provide is worth it. I was having a really bad day last week, and Violet comes flying in my office and slid across the pergo floor. Made me laugh. :)

Cats are much lower maintenance, as far as working & traveling. When we go out of town, I just ask someone to stop by once or twice a day to feed them & fill their water bowl. Bubba stays at his grandma's house (and yes, she calls herself his grandma :D )

Thanks, Paula. We do the same thing. I have great neighbors and we all look out for each other when we go away.

Does anyone else have cats that will ONLY drink out of the toilets? I'll put water bowls down for them, but they prefer the toilets. It doesn't really bother me. My toilets are always clean and I make sure to flush several times after using cleaner. But I just can't get them to drink out of a bowl.

I used to let my cat do this but my roommate hated it so we now keep the seat down so Mufy can't get into it. Sometimes when we have guests they don't do this and he gets to sneak a slurp. So if you really want him to drink out of his bowl close the seat on the toilet. Some cats prefer running water though which is what I think attracted Mufy to the bowl. He likes to drink out of the tap too, and out of his Mom's glass. I don't drink from the glass when he's done though.

My cats a sink cat. So then, of course I have to go in there to turn the sink water on for him. Then off. Sometimes I see him drinking from the new water dish I got them, I put in filtered water, and it's the kind that replaces....

My cat hates water. My daughter pulled him into the tub the other night. He likes to sit on the side of the tub while she takes a bath. Very brave cat  He flipped out when she put him in the water with her. And he looked like a little rat when he came out all wet!

I once had a cat who loved water when I was little. He would get in the tub, and I would take the removable shower head, spray him, soap him up and rinse him off. People thought that was amazing that he would let me do that.

I house-sat for some people in San Jose, CA one summer - and they had this obese cat I had to put on a diet plan lol.

Anyway -his name was Wumpus and he was the funniest fat bastard. LOVED playing in the toilet - preferably after getting into lots of dirt - so that he'd make nice muddy paw prints all over the bathroom - it sucked when I'd forget to leave the toilet lid closed - Wumpus would have a ball.

Poor fat cat - I got him to the point where he could again fit through his cat door - and jump on counters etc...then he moved to NM and ran off one night - I think he was eaten by coyotes...

That's my main cat experience - that summer was hell with my allergies though - but I couldn't pass up a free house in California - even if it was in San Jose :p

Violet loves the water too. Our house in FL had a pool, and I would actually take her in the pool with me. I'd hold her the whole time, but she loved it. She also loved fetching leaves, frogs and lizards out of the pool.

Why is it any grosser than a dog's? We had a lab-sheppard mix who licked his butt constantly. His anal glands needed to be "expressed" a lot. It was the foulest smell ever. Ten times worse than the litter box.

I only ever had one cat who drank from the toilet. Actually he only tried it once... and he fell in. Then he proceeded to race around the house dripping toilet water everywhere.

I had another cat who for the longest time insisted on crapping in the bath tub (when it was empty, obviously). We had a litterbox and kept it clean but he just kept on using the tub (though he would always pee in the litterbox). So I moved the box into the tub and he finally got the idea. (I eventually moved the box to the bathroom floor but could never move it any further without confusing the little guy)

Of the two I have now, one insists on getting in the way of everything. If I'm reading, he sits on my book or magazine. If I'm sorting laundry, he sits on the clothes. If I'm on the computer he sits between me and the monitor. And the other one freaks out if I go into a room and shut the door. He will scratch at the door, meow, attack the knob, reach his paws underneath the door and generally throw a fit. But when I open the door, he runs away. Then he'll come back a few minutes later and freak out again if it's closed or beg for attention if it's open. And they both stand gaurd at the door when I'm in the bathroom. Cats are such a pain, but I love them!

If I have to choose, I would say dog. Not much for cats here, though I have met a few I liked. I probably won't ever have a dog again. I could not deal with the hair, the smell, the dirt, all of that. I grew up with dogs and even though I loved the things, there was always the dog hair problem, and the tracking dirt in the house problem. And others. I have to control my environment far too much to deal with that. I am just fine with my parrots, thanks. :)

Sighes - just saddening isn't it. But, I tend to travel with the two I have now. In fact, last month we spent a week on Cape Cod, which they LOVED. If I am travelling alone, I will take one of them with me under the seat of the plane. Ah pets!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh! So cute! I could totally get a dog. I'd like to have a Boston terrier, I think. King Charles spaniels are cute, too. My sister-in-law just put money down on a boxer puppy, and I can't wait to see it. But I'm still more of a cat person!

Carol

Boxer puppies are adorable! My brother has a boxer, my nephew Yogi. He's a big love who thinks he's a lap dog.

I used to have cats, but developed an allergy when I was a teenager, so no more cats. I love dogs and miss my Candy. :( I just told my mom yesterday that I wanna get a puppy in a few more years. :)

I can't see that wittle face right now. There's a big orange and white furry thing sitting in front of the monitor and wiping its cold wet nose all over my hands as I'm typing this. Sigh. Cats.

I've had dogs all my life, poodles. Right now I have a toy poodle named Bogart.

person, Maybe seeing my oldest brother attacked by a dog and then enduring rabies shots has something to do with my indifference towards dogs (Though I have owned a few during my life).

I also must be a diehard cat person, I kept Rufus & Missy from dying when their Mother died 2 days after they were born by bottle feeding 'em every 3-4 hours for about 3 weeks (I am homebound now due to illness)...4 weeks later they're a rambunctious dual of doom (Patches had her 2nd litter almost 2 weeks ago and she adopted Rufus & Missy.)

Normally, I don't touch the pussy, but I fell in love with this kitty a few years back. I almost bought him but I'm allergic to cats, so it would have been stupid. He used to purr like crazy on the back of my neck! So cute! My aunt ended up buying him and loved him but he went missing a year later. So sad. Lucky for her, the breeder had another litter right before he went missing. So, she bought another one and loves him like crazy too!
