From the Associate Press:
Authorities don't yet know what caused an arriving passenger jet to burst into flames at Toronto's Pearson International Airport. A witness in Toronto says ``everything looked good'' -- before the Air France jet cracked in half.
Thick smoke continues to burn from the Airbus, after the jet skidded off the runway while trying to land in a storm. A passenger told Canada's C-T-V that he saw lightning strikes as the plane tried to land.
A Toronto Fire Services spokesman tells C-N-N some people have been taken to hospitals, but he didn't have details on their conditions. A Toronto radio station (A-M 680) quotes emergency workers as saying most of the 252 people on board are safe. The station reported there were two explosions on the plane, and that a police official says two groups of passengers had been evacuated.
Rescue crews continue showering the jet with water as it burns next to Canada's busiest highway.
The Air France flight was arriving from Paris.

If they got 252 people off of that plane and they are safe, I think we all need to say a prayer of thanks because that indeed is a miracle.
I fly all of the time and though there are exits on the plane, most of the time, you have to crawl over a seat to get to them. Plus, imagine how cray a scene it would be in the smoke filled dark cabin. Maybe the plane broke in two and people were able to just run out of the cracks in the fuselage.
The whole thing is just terrifying to me.

from cnn.com
TORONTO, Canada (CNN) -- Firefighters are battling a blaze on board an international passenger jet that overran a runway at Tornoto's Pearson International Airport.
"This plane came off the runway. It slid off the runway and into this gully," said Toronto radio reporter Leah Walker, who witnessed the crash. "It's come off with probably a great amount of force into trees and the creek."
She said a fireball engulfed the plane. The Associated Press reported 200 passengers were on board the Airbus 340.
A fire department spokesman said there were reports that some people were taken to hospitals, but he could not confirm information on casualties. Canada's Global Television network said the pilot and co-pilot survived.
One passenger, Olivier Dubos told reporters: "We had absolutely no insight or hint that the landing would be difficult. Power went out just before we landed...we thought it had to do with the rain."
Flight 358 was scheduled to arrive from Paris's Charles de Gaulle International Airport at 3:35 p.m. ET. Severe thunderstorms had occurred in the area beforehand.
Another witness, Corey Marx, said, "Everything looked good, sounded good. It hit the runway nice, then all of a sudden we heard the engines backing up."
Marx said he initially didn't think anything was wrong. But then, "The guy I was with piped up, 'You know, he's getting pretty close to the end.' Immediately afterward, right off he went."
The plane fell into a valley at the end of the runway and cracked in half, Marx said.
Vito Porto, a freelance photographer, told Global television that an explosion occurred after the crash, throwing debris for several hundred feet.
Smoke billowed from the site, as scores of emergency workers sought to put out the fire with foam.

Yeah... 309 people walked away the crash. From what I've read, it sounds like the fire didn't really start until after everyone had evacuated the plane, very lucky for them! It's true what they say about crashes... you've got about 90 seconds to get your ass off the plane. After that, your chances of survival are slim.

Did you ever participate in the evacuation drills? I saw them on tv once. It was horrifying to see people climbing over the seats on the wing exit doors  Even more horrifying would be to have that happen on the CRJ's, where the aisle is like 30 incehes wide  Fortunately, I try to sit in the emergency row all of the time when I am not upgraded to First.

90 seconds, oh my god, that is so scary. I wonder if there were people w/ children on that flight-- I mean, that is my nightmare, trying to get my kids to an exit and out safely in such chaos...
it really is a miracle that everyone got off that plane.

One of the articles I read said an infant was injured, but not seriously. In fact, it seems the most serious injuries were minor - smoke inhalation, fractured legs, etc. Considering what it could have been, that is relatively nothing.
I fly usually at least twice a month and in July and Aug., I will fly pretty much every week. So, this is a little scary
