Bacall Rips Cruise's 'Vulgar' Behavior
Monday, August 01, 2005
NEW YORK — Lauren Bacall (search) has a few unkind words to say about Tom Cruise (search).
In an interview in the Aug. 8 issue of Time magazine, now on newsstands, the 80-year-old actress says, "When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise."
"His whole behavior is so shocking," she says. "It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's kind of a sickness."
Bacall was alluding to Cruise's displays of emotion and public courting of Katie Holmes in the weeks leading up to the release of his new film, "War of the Worlds." Cruise and Holmes became engaged in June after he proposed at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Last fall, Bacall made similar remarks about Cruise's ex-wife Nicole Kidman, her co-star in "Birth." While promoting the movie, Bacall became irritated when an interviewer described Kidman as "a legend."
"She's not a legend," Bacall said. "She can't be a legend at whatever age she is. ... You have to be older."
"Private Screenings: Lauren Bacall" and a marathon of Bacall's films were to air Monday on TCM.

She's so great (and right! :D). Tom Cruise is what he is, and Kidman can't be called a legend.

I like Bacall too, and I agree with what she said about Tom Cruise...but who cares what she says and thinks about him? And who is she to be made the judge of what Tom Cruise really is? Her making comments as such makes her come across like a bitter, old woman.

Perhaps - but I think she has earned the right to comment as she has been in the business since the 30's, was one of the greats, and there probably is nothing she has not seen. So, I give her the right in my world to comment on other actors. But, to each their own.

I think it makes her come across as what she is: a Hollywood star from another era that is shocked at how low some people will go these days for publicity.

I think it makes her come across as ironic, brilliant and witty once again.

Mmm...ok. So she says what we're all thinking out here in Normalville. Why do we need someone like Lauren Bacall to say these things?

Because most of the time it's very important how things are said to spread the message.

Who said we needed her to say these things? While we may have our own opinions, I find hers to be a bit different and more interesting considering she's been playing the Hollywood game for 60 years.

I think they are not using their private lives there - that is their commercial life. I think what LB is talking about is Cruise using his religious beliefs to try and sell women on not taking medicine that can save their and their baby's lives.
On edit - I thought you were talking about them using their image to sell the record. My bad
But, I do think that it is okay to use the inbreeding and fighting in the band and elsewhere to sell the music, because that is mostly the topic of the lyrics, etc.

Because of who she is, she has a TON of clout. If she says what we're all thinking, it gets published. The likes of Cruise could say that so-and-so is just jealous of his success with 99% of other actors/actresses. But when Bacall rips your ass to shreds and calls you out for being an idiot, you just can't ignore it.

I think it would be a stretch to assume she was talking about things like music, where personal experiences are the basis of the art for most. One look at Cruise, Holmes, and Scientology and it's obvious what she was speaking to in that interview: whoring our your personal life to sell your movies.

Really? I love that she said that, because she is funny, but she'd definitely be someone I'd be most likely to not care if they said that, because she says smack about everybody. She's notoriously salty, judgemental, and, well, rude.

Although she doesn't even register on the scales when compared to the lovely Shelley Winters.

Yes, but she makes great headlines: "When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise." will work in the briefs columns all over the world very well.

Well, I think it was in the press. But, I do not remember reading anything where she did that? I think she commented on it when asked though, but that is a little different. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, but that's my point. It is great headlines. My point was, you can usually count on Bacall to say something like that.
I would respect Lauren Bacall's opinion anyday especially when it comes to Tom Cruise. Heck even his scientology people are think he's gone too far. I just read that today.
I really like Lauren Bacall. I liked Humphrey Bogart, too, so much so that my toy poodle is named Bogart. She knows her craft, & she can spot a stinker (& a nut case) a mile a way.

I think it's hilarious . As far as I'm concerned Lauren can say what she wants to .Being the same age as Tom and even having a bad case of ADHD like he claims to I've tried to be sympathetic towards him but I'm also a fan of great acting and in his case the talent is not there. He's not terrible ,he is just not in the league of a Sean Penn or a Daniel Day- Lewis so I'm always kind of bewildered at how he has been so big for so long but it can happen I guess. Look at Madonna.
