OKAY so HERE'S a simple-sounding question just for fun -

I thought this might get an interesting discussion going, hopefully! :)

What is it, exactly, that is so special about Stevie???

I think this could be illuminating!

( P.S. - No Over-the-Top Steviebashing, please... :distress: )

Have fun! :D

Good Question. I find Stevie special because in concert at one moment, she could be rocking out like nobody's business and the next, steal your heart in a touching love ballad. Plus she has so much class.

You can really tell on stage she just loves doing what she does. It comes across in her body language and her face lights up with huge smiles.

She lets you into "her world" through her songs like a gifted songwriter should and tells a story.

Her songs appeal and touch so many people. You feel like she wrote the song just for you or that she is passing on her wisdom and love to you through her songs.

I like Miss Stevie because she's different. She's got her own style, no only in her clothes and aura, but her songwriting and singing.

I guess, for me, the thing that makes Stevie so special is that she is one of the very, very few songwriters who has the ability to really "get to me."
And the ONLY one who's ever been able to do that on a consistent basis... and for decades, no less.

She writes songs that speak to my personal experiences, while also enlightening me and showing me new ways to look at life and love.
Within each of her four minute "worlds," she can tear me down and build me back up again.

And she does it all with these unusual little songs, and that strange, strange voice.

That is what is so special about Stevie, to me.

I can sum up my answer in one word: inspiration. She has motivated me to do so many things that have scared me before and has always been a sort of support system to me; and collecting memorabilia is a great hobby.

I also second everything Mr. Stew said above. Stevie has the ability to speak to me in ways no other singer/songwriter has. I love everything about her, she is the total package to me and I will love her forever because of what she has meant to me through some very rough times. I will always get defensive and make no mistake, I don't care what others say, she will always be special...

The very first thing that caught my attention was Stevie's voice. I've always loved singer's with a raspiness (is that word?) in their voice. Then I saw her beauty and I have been hooked ever since.

Unique. Classy. Talented. "touch your soul" songwriting. Gorgeous. Timeless.

yep. I happened to sit down with my aunt to watch The Dance the night it premiered on MTV and I really didn't pay attention until I heard those cowbells. I turned around and saw that golden shawl. By the time she did the GDW growl, I was completely taken in. The very next day I bought every single tape and cd I could find with her voice on it. My, how far I've come since then.

The thing about Stevie that made me buy one of her CDs at a time when I normally would've said "Stevie who? Who's that guy?" was her voice. I saw the video for "Every Day" and I thought her voice sounded very wise and incredibly sexy. She sold me on that song and I bought TISL.

I was drawn to her because of her look, of course. I first saw her on TV in 2000 and she was a relatively full-figured lady, and I loved that. I always love to see someone who's not ultra-skinny but still presents herself with lots of self-confidence.

The last thing is her lyrics. When I first heard "Candlebright," I couldn't believe how much it described something I was going through, and from then on I found that so many of her songs spoke to me in the same way. "Outside the Rain," "Sara," "Beautiful Child," "Planets of the Universe," my username, and others really speak to me, and in a way that other songs by other songwriters don't. It's rare and that makes it very special.

Ya note of buying cd's, Stevie and Fleetwood Mac are the only ones I buy. or in a once in the blue moon maybe some oldies cd's. and the other artist are not worth $15.00 for one or two good tunes.Stevie and FM can build a cd with all good tunes, not like these days zero talent artists. they suck period.....

There are so many people on the radio and on TV who aren't interesting enough, IMO, for me to actually go out and buy their albums.

I've been asking myself that for decades. :shrug:Read the thread. :D

I love the way Stevie bares her soul in her songs. I don't know of any other artists that dig so deep... She gets to me. I also love the way she sings and performs. She is magic on stage. I can relate to her music with what's going on in my life and (I'll admit it) I love to speculate on Who she's writing about!

She's absolutely intriguing.
As a singer, songwriter and person.
I never thought of her (or the rest of FM much) in the 70s. I was just too young (probably the last time I could use that expression!) in age--and musical tastes. I thought Dreams (which I heard every five minutes on AM radio) was "creepy."
So, fast forward to late 1997 and I channel surf and stop when I see the Dance on VH1. I stopped, initially, because I had seen Stevie somewhere (probably the Tonight Show) during the SA era and I was amazed at how pretty and fit she looked on the Dance. And then I stopped marveling over that and looked and listened to what she was doing with a little song called Silver Springs. I was amazed.
A lot of crap had been happening in my life and it was kind of freaky the way I kept finding the Dance and all its many, many reruns that late Fall/early winter. I needed something in my life that would bring back some beauty and feeling and through Stevie's (and Lindsey's, and FM's) work--I found it in a place I never expected.
Stevie has been through so much in her life--there has been a lot of hard living (and loving). And probably 99.9% of her fans have had lives that are NOTHING like hers--and yet, she can touch you with her words. They are vague enough that you wonder what she's really writing about (or who)--and yet, you know exactly what they mean to you--even if you can't put it in words. Somewhere in your heart, you know. And, I'm happy to say, after seeing her do Circle Dance in Atlantic City--even with the songs she doesn't write--she can still grab you with the conviction in her voice and her honest, no-nonsense delivery.
I've never heard a singer do anything as powerful as Stevie's Silver Springs performance that night in 1997--and I've never had a singer reach me with her entire body of work as Stevie has done.

I remember buying the "White Album" and being so awed that there were TWO women in the band. And I totally just fell in love with their music. I was only 10 at the time but it was just such a big deal to me that there were these two women in this rock and roll band--it was very inspirational to me. I mean, I didn't grow up to be a rock star, and in fact, am completly without talent as a musician but I did become a writer! Anyway, I was just instantly captivated by Stevie's music and the sound of her voice. She didn't sound like anyone else and her "style" was different than everyone else's. And later, when I read interviews with her, or heard her, she just seemed so truthful, so straightforward and honest. And funny too. Genuine I guess would be the word. And the funny thing is that I still love all of those things about her. Later, as we both got older. . . she went through these addictions, and broken love affairs, and gained/lost weight and I found myself going through some of these same things (minus the addictions) and I still was able to identify with her. Anyway, for 30 years now, she's been an inspiration to me.

Her honesty, her "I am who I am" with no excuses and seemingly no regrets. The 70's "Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman" craziness, energy draining performances that would leave you breathless and dazed. It reminds me of something my older brother (who is the same age as Stevie) used to tell me..."live fast, love hard, die young and leave a good lookin' corpse". A little warped, but probably part of the mentality of those times. And her voice...that awesome voice.

I tend to agree a lot with what others have said here.
#1 I think her music of course! When I listen to her voice (no matter the era) and the words that she has written it can take me to a place and gives me a feeling like no one else ever has or ever will. I agree, and I don’t know why, but when I listen to her, it heals me. She has that perfect, beautiful, velvety rasp unlike anyone else. She has sheer, raw, unique mindblowing talent plain and simple.
#2 Her whole unique image that she has never shied away from for anyone. She has a matchless charisma and eccentricity.
#3 Her life story is different from most. She has triumphed from places that others couldn't.

Those of us who have that connection with her and with each other...we just get it. She is special to us just because she's Stevie, the goddess of rock and roll.

I've always been a sucker for unusual or unique voices and she easily has one of the most recognizable voices out there. Throw all that honest emotion and tumult into it and how can you NOT be hooked?

I love that she has a sense of humour about herself and can laugh at the fact that she's an aging rocker...and still rock while doing it.

And she speaks to the "fairy princess" in me. She takes things that can easily be construed as silly, all the witchy, glittery goddess unicorn madness and makes it so magical and wonderful and real. :)

I am not really sure what it is. The voice, the songs, the style....all of those of course. But there's just something there that I cannot explain. I REALLY discovered her when I was 16 (just got my liscence) and heard Rhiannon on the radio for the millionth time. For some reason that one time it really stuck with me. Then I saw the Rumours album cover, and was obssessed with the dress. In about a 2 weeks period I became totally crazy for her. I can't really explain it to people, there is just something that is so captivating about her. And her clothes are awsome

There are a lot of raspy voiced singers out there who sing about love and lost love, etc. There aren't as many who have adopted such a UNIQUE look and feel. There are still fewer who have quite the aura that Stevie projects. It's the combination, the sum of those parts, that make her special to me. And the fact that she has remained relatively true to her unique-ness is just frosting.

she is a stand out act~ she has remained unchanged, she still is the gypsy we all love~ her songwriting is unique, along w/ her presence, & that she actually writes her own lyrics~ i couldn't imagine her dressing an acting as the most up & comers today~ i have loved hr since i was 5 yrs old, i think it is her fairy taleness, her spirit, her feminism~ not to mention her beauty, her voice, her mysticalness~ i love the fact, even after all these yrs she still does "the edge walk", she hasn't gotten "to big" for her fans, even w/ the craziness of the day, like the murder of "dimebag" daryl (*sp), that stevie still takes that time to shake hands, to be kissed night after night~ & i love how she doesn't seem outa touch w/ her fans, she knows how much she means to some of us & she doesn't abuse that~ & besides i just think she is the greatest rock chick there is!!!   ~
