I knew him another way
I knew him another day
In some ways he'd forgotten me
In many ways he got to me
I turned away so he couldn't see
I turned away...it could never be
I never thought he could walk away
But I lost him again...yesterday

I found it on Nancy's site (www.buckinghamnicks.net)- it's a pic from the Clinton inaugural. In my opinion, Lindsey was at his hottest during the Out of the Cradle era. Too bad Stevie looked like hell and felt like hell.

She sounds lethargic until the the end and it doesn't have enough personality to be a great rock tune, imo. It's quite blah. Like faded blue denim jeans.

Maybe I need to put it in again but it seems very passionate to me. The problem I have with it is that however passionate, the vocals just don't sound too good, and I think that goes for every track on that CD. But then again I'm crazy because I LOVE her vocals on "Seven Wonders." :o

She sounds like crap on Street Angel, you'll get no arguments from me. It's such a sad album for me to listen to that I don't know why I haven't pawned it at second-hand record store by now. She sounds detached (and it isn't a cool detachment like Bowie or David Byrne, either), uninterested, bored, and devoid of almost every quality that made me like her to begin with. I just plain don't like it.

I love her vocal on "It's Only Love" and many hate that one, so we're all different, I suppose.

"Blue Denim" is awesome and "Love Is Like A River" is a scorcher. "Rose Garden" has its moments. Otherwise the album is pretty much a stinker.

It's crap, imo. Sure, there are a couple of good lyrics here and there, I really love the title track, but that really is about it. She doesn't sound good, the production is murky, her creativity was zapped, etc. There's nothing to it, it's simply dull.

I actually like the lyrics, even though they're simple. I mean if you keep with Towie's perspective in his first post, they're kinda heartbreaking really, you know "you still get to me, but it's plain to see, because of how I look, I don't get to you anymore." Sad really.

Plus, I don't think the vocal is too bad on Blue Denim, although it's killah on the Leno and Letterman performances.

Blue Denim is by far the best song on Street Angel for me. It's a mediorce album for sure, but it stands out a mile, in a good way I mean.

I don't think it's crap, but it's definitely dull and mediorce and in many ways that's worse.

I sometimes put it on and think, that's pleasant enough, but I've gone years without listening to it (bar Blue Denim) before. I can't say that for any of Stevie's other albums. It doesn't draw you back, although I know some people here like it.

I've found a lot of new respect for Street Angel after reading a thread here a while back about "Docklands". I couldn't for the life of me remember that song. FREAKY...not going into that again, but there's a lot on there I really like. My old standby favorites have always been Blue Denim, Rose Garden and Listen to the Rain (LOVE THIS ONE - it rocks and anyone that doesn't recognize that? is a LAME-O). But I think Kick-it ain't bad and her vocals sound pretty good on songs I hate like Unconditional Love. That song sucks but she sounds great in it.

Well said.

The worst thing for me is if I'm bored by an album. Street Angel bores me to tears and there's nothing on it that really makes me want to listen to it. Her creativity was zapped and that album is the product of it. She relied heavily on outside material, and the stuff that she wrote was just silly and lifeless. "No, no, no...there's no Beauty and the Beast here." Fech.

I think SA is not her best and I agree that it is lacking, for me, mostly in the lyrics, but I am very grateful it was released because I think Blue Denim, Rose Garden and Destiny are amazing and maybe we wouldn't have those songs if not for SA. I myself can listen to the album front to back with no problem but I don't find myself really getting the same emotion from it that I do her other albums.

yeppers - I wonder myself sometimes if the lack of "amazing" lyrics stem from this. Look at the abundance of lyrical poetry early on...as she got more famous and possibly "removed" her lyrics may have suffered. How long can she write those classics based on 20 year old experiences. For our sake, I hope forever...

I think it's a very, very sad song. That's why she nails the vocal at the end of the song. You can tell she was hurt, bitter and disillusioned with life. For three years of her life 1991/1992/1993 she crawled away and secluded herself away from the world. Very sad. As pathetic as the beginning lyrics are, they bite hard like a bitch at the end-

"So, I'm going away for a little while to remember how to feel
And if I find the answer, I promise you, I'll come back and get you"

Gives me shivers everytime.

'Shangri-La' is pretty damn close though, and, for me, it's tied at second place with 'Rock A Little' (which will always have a place very near to my heart).

I'm a weird sort... if one of Stevie's albums is going to come close to boring me, it's 'Bella Donna.'
It's almost too perfect, and I feel like it loses character in the process. As I've said before, I'm a bigger fan of Stevie's more eccentric work.

I Sing For the Things is totally different than HAEWAFY to me. It's faster, it's not as long, and I really like the notes chosen much better. I like the words a lot better, too, come to think of it. Never, ever compare the masterpiece that is "Storms" to the sludge that is "I Sing For the Things." I wouldn't be surprised if Iovine walked out simply because she wanted to put that "song" on the album.

Since we're all grading RAL, I might as well, too:

(B-) I Can't Wait
(F) Rock a Little (Go Ahead Lily)
(F) Sister Honey
(F) I Sing for the Things
(C) Imperial Hotel
(A-) Some Become Strangers
(C) Talk to Me
(F) The Nightmare
(A) If I Were You
(A-) No Spoken Word
(C) Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You (live, it's a different story)

It's kind of ironic that the two best songs on the album are songs she didn't write. I usually hate the cover songs that she does, but she picked some great ones for RAL.

I like both ISFTT and Storms. They are waaayyy diff. though. As I mentioned earlier in another thread, the era of about 79 to 83 was when her voice to me was the most haunting. It was also my fav. era. But, I like ISFTT.

I think it's one of her most complex and devastating songs. It reads like a suicide note, whether intended or not, and I find it chilling. Her delivery is haunting and the music exacerbates the severity of her loneliness. One of the few songs of hers where the music perfectly reflects the lyrics. I don't find it short, sweet, or simple, but to each his own.

They're incredibly different. I don't see any real similarities between them. And I agree in regards to her voice, the Tusk songs and Wild Heart songs, especially.

I think it reads like a suicide note as well. For YEARS, I thought she said "this is only another death" - I think Storms is one of her best ever, and I think says alot.

and I always wondered what was the "deadly call inside" - I've always assumed that was the desire to kill herself out of grief.

I think we mean different things when we think of simple. I mean, that every word and note is exact and effective and pointed. There are no "filler words" that suck, and no extraneous production tricks. It's a very precise song, is what I mean by simple, and also that the meaning of the words is very, very clear, without any farting around. :)

I like the song, but I never thought of those lyrics that way - makes so much sense. I'll be listening with new ears next time.

RE: TISL being her masterpiece, I thought she said in an interview that Lindsey told her TISL was the best solo album she'd ever done, and she took it to heart because "Lindsey doesn't compliment me like that." Perhaps a ton of people around her were telling her the same thing...

I don't see how anyone could think TISL is better than BD, but I'm sure Stevie isn't surrounded by people who would tell her "This is good, but man that stuff you did 20 years ago was SO much better!"
