"Stevie Nicks Puts Vacation on Hold"
She'll bring her hits and those of Fleetwood Mac for Reno show
by Neil Baron
7/28/2005
Stevie Nicks returns to Reno July 31.
When Stevie Nicks performs July 31 at the Reno Events Center, she'll
do it with a show that shouldn't exist and an opening act that makes
her cry.
"This tour wasn't even supposed to happen," Nicks said by phone
during a tour stop in Laguna Beach, Calif. "I was supposed to have
this whole year off."
So much for rest. When Eagles frontman Don Henley invited Nicks on a
co-headline tour, she accepted (Henley is not performing in Reno).
Nicks then was offered four dates to perform in Las Vegas at the
Celine Dion Theater in Caesars Palace.
"I would like to be able to play Vegas a couple times a year because
then I don't have to travel," said Nicks, who lives in Los
Angeles. "So I said, `OK, I'll put my summer off. Let's go do this.'
But this is a show that we would never have put together had it not
been for going into Celine's theater that is like 110 feet wide with
300-foot IMAX screens. You just can't take your band in there and
play. You have to build a world, and we did. We spent two months
doing it and it's an amazing world. So we came out of Vegas with an
outrageous show that we never would have had otherwise."
Without giving away too much, Nicks' concert features lots of film
and video from the vaults of the past. She also got permission to use
the art and paintings of her favorite painter, the late Sulamith
Wulfing.
"This has touches and moments of, say, Fillmore West or Winterland or
the Avalon Ballroom," Nicks said. "It reminds me of an amazing show
from 1971."
Nicks would know. In 1971, she was a 23-year-old musical neophyte.
Now, she is arguably one of the most influential and recognizable
female artists in rock `n' roll history.
With her sultry good looks and gypsy-like appearance, Nicks helped
Fleetwood Mac in 1977 create, "Rumours," one of the best-selling rock
albums of all time at more than 17 million copies.
When she branched out to release her debut solo album, "Bella Donna,"
in 1981, it was an instant hit. Buoyed by the top 20 hits "Stop
Draggin' My Heart Around," "Leather and Lace," and "Edge of
Seventeen," the album reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
After 35 years of entertaining audiences, some might say that Nicks
owes her fans little more than to show up, sing her hits and go home.
But the 57-year-old chanteuse couldn't disagree more. During every
show, Nicks takes 10 minutes to walk slowly across the stage to shake
as many fans' hands as possible while her band continues to play. For
some artists, such a gesture would seem staged and bogus.
But not for Nicks.
"It's physically very hard on my back," she said by phone during a
tour stop in Laguna Beach, Calif. "But it's something that I've
always felt was important to do. And I love it because then I have
that emotional connection every night with the people that come to
see me.
"We also do meet-and-greets every night except for when we have to
leave right away. It's something Fleetwood Mac has always done and
I've done it in my solo career. It's a thing that's good to do. It
gives you a minute to have some personal time with your fans. And I
have the greatest fans in the world."
If record sales are any indication, she's right. Every album Nicks
has released has gone platinum, she said. The only exception is her
2001 release, "Trouble in Shangri-La," which is soon to go platinum,
she said.
That album, Nicks first studio release since 1994's "Street Angel,"
is one of her favorites. She spent nearly four years pouring her
emotions into her words at a time when she was having doubts about
her songwriting skills.
When it came time to record, Nicks recruited the vocal talents of
Macy Gray, Sarah McLachlan and Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks,
each of whom performed on one song. Nicks' main collaborator was
Sheryl Crow, who credits Nicks as one of her main musical
inspirations.
"I really felt that was my masterpiece," Nicks said. "But considering
what happened, I can't be too upset."
Like many albums released in the summer of 2001, "Trouble in Shangri-
La" got lost in the madness that was the aftermath of the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks. Nicks said she is unsure if she'll release another
solo record.
"I really don't know what to do," she said. "I'm totally writing. I
could go into the studio tomorrow and start a solo record. I think I
get better as a writer every day because I work on it constantly. So
it's not like I couldn't do it, but ..."
Her voice trails off. Why bother when it has little chance of playing
on the radio, which means fewer people have a chance to hear the
record?
Nicks doesn't lament the current state of radio as much for herself
as she does for those she'll likely never know.
"There's a lot of amazing talented groups and solo singer-songwriters
that are never going to make it because there's nobody to give them a
chance. I know they're out there, but whether or not we ever get to
know they exist is another question."
Nicks is helping to change that in her own small way by offering
Vanessa Carlton the opportunity to open the show.
"She is my baby chick," Nicks said. "I adore her and I think she is
one of the best singer-songwriters to come along in a long time. Like
many others, if she has some people behind her that nurture her and
let her spend time to develop who she is, I think that she'll be
around in 30 years, like myself.
"She kills me every night. Sometimes, I can't watch her because she
makes me cry. She makes me think of me when I was 24 and it chokes me
up. It chokes me up so bad I have to leave. I can't watch her. That's
the biggest compliment I could give to anybody. She's amazing."
---
A random thought from Nicks
Usually in interviews, we'll ask if the artist has anything they want
to add. The answer usually is "no." Stevie Nicks had something to
add. She took time from her busy schedule recently to visit extremely
injured soldiers returning from war at the Walter Reed Hospital in
Washington, D.C.
"I spent the whole day with them," she said. "It opened my eyes to
the fact that there's a lot of kids out there that are so injured
their lives will never be the same. If you happen to be in a city
with a military hospital, get a plate of cookies together and go
visit them because they are so isolated and so lonely. It broke my
heart. It was an eye-opening experience for me. It really doesn't
matter how you feel about war. What matters is that these kids are
paying a price and they're alone and they're lonely. That's what I
would like people to do. Take some candy and spend a little time with
them. You'd be amazed what it means to them."

That totally pisses me off. I'm sorry but there are so many great artists who don't get played on the radio who still continue to make records and gain loyal fans. What a cop out. "I won't make a new album because it didn't sell as well as I had liked" sounds so childish to me. If she's proud of the music, then she shouldn't give a damn how many copies it sold. It's not like it totally bombed or got blasted by the critics.
I bet they won't play the new Paul McCartney album or the new Neil Young album on the radio either. Stevie should realise she's in a different league now; it's not about hit singles and MTV rotation for older artists because their audience isn't teenyboppers and it never will be, no matter what the music is like.

That's a great article...thanks for posting! It seems like Stevie is a little skeptical about releasing a solo record...but I say she needs to screw radio play and do it anyways. But who wouldn't say she needs to do that?

Oy. The album was released months before 9/11 and had already dropped off the charts by then. Her tour has more than half over, too.

So...she could do it but doesn't want to do it? That's what it sounds like to me. I pray that airplay isn't important to her because that would just be silly at this stage in her career. I thought recording her songs and sharing them with people was important to her. Sounds like one big cop-out.

Stevie is quite preoccupied with sales these days. All that praying to the "commercial gods" and worrying about whether ex-dopers will buy her music as opposed to 12 year olds. To not record new music because it won't sell millions of copies is ridiculous. If more artists felt that way, we wouldn't have jack **** to listen to.

about 90% of the music I listen never gets radio airplay, So I find that excuse kinda lame...
Must be more to it than Stevie is letting on, Perhaps a new Fleetwood Mac album or who the f**k knows (Another boxed set)??? I know artists such as Rush & Dream Theater could give a donkey trot what their album sales are since they have loyal fans who clamour for each of their new releases.

It sounds like her uncertainty about releasing another solo album is about not wanting to lose money on it or a tour afterward. I don't blame her. Just because her core fan base would happily shell out the money on her next record or tour doesn't mean it won't ruin her financially. Plus she got some pretty good reviews from Shangri-la and Say You Will, maybe she just wants to leave the party while it's still a good one, not after it's too late. I'd love a new record, but I understand not wanting to risk her livelihood and respect in her field.

It saddens me that she seems to measure how good a record is with commercial success. I'm starting to think she doesn't like Street Angel, not because it's her poorest album, but because it's her poorest selling.
Who is feeding this crap to her anyway? Stevie is never gonna be big with your average 12 year old again, she should just deal with it.
Her reaction seems to be, I'll become a nostalgia act, touring my old songs into the ground, rather than continuing to make new and artistic music. It's bull****. It makes me so sad she's essentially choosing money (which she'll no doubt make as a live act) over the artistic option (which is making music she loves no matter how well it sells).

Maybe Stevie should swallow her pride and do something out of the mainstream for once, like touring itty bitty venues and exposing herself to a wider audience that wouldn't necessarily go see her for $100 at the Fleet Center. Strip the show down from all the extravagant stuff and make it a small, artsy-fartsy show that she could tour with without worrying about paying back the promoters and breaking her bank account. One of the big reasons many artists still sell records is because they tour small venues and build up loyal followings. Stevie already has one, but she could build another one if she tried and it could result in more record sales.

I don't know how I feel about this article. It seems rather depressing overall. While I think Stevie must feel some pressure about sales, etc., I agree that it has (or was supposed to be) about sharing her music with the world and giving us an "escape". Maybe she's been focusing on the business part of it too much, who knows. I think we've all learned to take these interviews with a grain of salt and move on. You can never tell what will actually take place.
As far as meet and greets, I'd like to know how in the hell you get to be part of that. That pricks me a little.
I do love that she does the handshake at the end of EO17 because it really sets her apart from other performers. And her comments about the soldiers was really nice.

A new album wouldn't ruin her financially. Go to an small label like Sanctuary and have them release it for you. Easy as pie.

I personally don't think that if Stevie released an album that didn't sell well it would effect her standing on the live circuit at all. I bet plenty of people on the SYW tour hadn't bought that album. As long as she plays the old standards (Dreams etc) I don't think she has a worry about getting people to come and see her. A poor selling album wouldn't risk her livelihood at all IMO.

One would think that at this stage in her career, where she isn't selling millions of records but has an incredibly loyal fan base, that she would essentially say f*ck it and continue with her artistry like so many other artists her age do. Very true. I just find it sad that now that she's older and won't make the money that she once did selling records, she won't bother anymore. I hope it isn't the case, but if it is, she needs to take a cue from people like Neil Young and Emmylou Harris. People I don't think she is the one who made the comment about her music not being played on the radio if she releases another album. That was the writer adding his little tidbit. Don't read too much into this. I know it's pretty darn depressing but all this is going to do is get people all up in arms and cause a ton of speculation. I'm not completely ruling out the fact that she will do another solo record. Plus, we should all know Stevie says tons of stuff in interviews that changes.
Here is what I wrote before I realized that was not her quote about the radio:
This solo album news is really dissapointing to me. I really can't believe she is that hung up on whether or not her music will sell well and be played on the radio. I'm sure she has other reasons that she's not willing to reveal but since when does her popularity come before her art? I always thought of Stevie as a true artist and a true artist would want to do another album because that's what they love and that's what they do, not to make $$ and sell records. I'm really shocked. There must be more to this story.

Stevie already has one, but she could build another one if she tried and it could result in more record sales.
she needs to swallow her pride abit and go a different route.
I know ALOT of people who would rather see Stevie play a smaller venue for less $$$ than play the usual haunts in the usual locales...
Hell, Dream Theater still play the clubs and they are not afraid of how that may be interupted (They have been a major label act since their debut back in 1989) and I'm sure the record company knows their core of fans will buy their release regardless.
Rush is the one band where they steadily built their following from the first release back in 1973 (1974?)...Do they play the huge arenas? Sure, But they also play the sheds and hell their latest release was an EP of classic rock songs from the 60's by bands that influenced 'em, the likes of Cream/The Who/etc...Think they cared if it sold? Nope, They did it to show respect for the musicians that influenced 'em and to show their fans who their influences were in their infancy stage of Rush, Not to make & break the banks for $$$ because of the record sales.

Maybe she just needs some time OFF. She's got to be exhausted. This interview is given towards the end of a summer tour, following a two year tour by Fleetwood Mac. She'll be back. Seeker007, I agree with you. On to Branson!

The rest of the article aside - I liked the "random thought" at the end.
I know she's addressed this in her journal entries - but yeah - that above segment got to me. She kicks ass!

"So we came out of Vegas with an
outrageous show that we never would have had otherwise."
I wasn't at Vegas, but this seems like a bit of an exaggeration!
Regarding Stevie and the solo album, I take everything she says with a giant helping of salt. She is constantly babbling stuff in her interviews that never turn out to be true. I have an interview from several years ago where she said she'd just be writing songs and playing them at the Roxy when she gets older and we all know that will never happen. If only it would....
Also, I just think Stevie is very sheltered and from an era long gone. I don't think she is so much saying that she doesn't want to make an album because she won't make any money, but because she is afraid that it won't reach people. She is from the time when radio was the way people heard a song they liked, went out and bought the album, and became a fan. I don't think she understands the music industry today, or if she does then she either doesn't like it or is afraid of it. She's old school.
Like everyone else, I am weary of Stevie's refusal to take chances. I would love for her to just record like mad, play clubs and small theaters, and shake up her setlist. But if she hasn't taken any chances in the 29 years I've been a fan, then I highly doubt she's going to start now. The best we are going to get is a greatest hits album with a symphony and another huge FM tour with the same setlist.

Then again I wouldn't put too much faith in this article. It's not like Stevie hasn't had doubts before. All she needs right now is a dinner with Tom Petty to set her straight on this "album sales" issue. Maybe we could even get a song out of it :D

"Stevie Nicks Puts Vacation on Hold"
"I really don't know what to do," she said. "I'm totally writing. I
could go into the studio tomorrow and start a solo record. I think I
get better as a writer every day because I work on it constantly. So
it's not like I couldn't do it, but ..."
Her voice trails off. Why bother when it has little chance of playing
on the radio, which means fewer people have a chance to hear the
record?
Blah Blah Blah…… Stevie are you looking for more radio play?? From the moment your solo career was launched you were billed as “Rock’s Princess” You hooked up with Jimmy Iovine and put out two back to back albums that kicked ass. Jimmy’s out of the picture and you put out Rock a Little…..that is exactly what it did….rock a little. Do get me wrong …I love RAL and each solo effort that followed, even Street Angel…..but where is the rock ??
I got the opportunity to see you a few weeks ago. Humm…the set list was basically the same for every tour with or without an album to promote. There was something different about each song. You sounded excellent and there was real intensity to every performance. You rocked.
I think it is time you gave ol’ Jimmy a call and get your ass back in the studio for your masterpiece. You are at the top of your game right now…..Call Tom in for a duet and make it happen !

I guess she is probably her own worst critic. And if she feels like she has already produced her masterpiece with TISL, she is probably terrified of following it up with Street Angel Pt. II. Those lean years (figuratively speaking, of course :D ) in the 90's, where she was touring behind a stanky album and had become the butt of weight jokes, etc. were very traumatic. So now that she has turned herself around, she is probably afraid to go back to that dark place. She may be sounding cocky right now, boasting that she is writing better songs than ever, but perhaps this overconfidence is a device to mask the real insecurities that lie deep within. Admittedly she hasn't written a hit song in decades, so it's not like she has any laurels to rest on. I think it's easy for all of us to say that it's okay to release an artistic album that sells ten copies, but none of us have put out one of the best selling albums of all time. It's all about the ego, unfortunately.

It makes me so sad she's essentially choosing money (which she'll no doubt make as a live act) over the artistic option (which is making music she loves no matter how well it sells).
Stevie, what has happened to you?
Of course she's choosing money! You think she puts out albums simply for the passion of writing and the love of her fans? Come on. It's all about the money! She lives a fabulous lifestyle that she wants to continue living and that doesn't come cheap. I'm sure her idea of retirement will be pretty high off the hog. Don't get me wrong, I love Stevie to death and I am sure she does adore her fans, but she ain't stupid, she's not going to put out an album that won't get played on the radio and doesn't sell. Why go to all the work? Just for her "real devoted fans", I think not. JMO.

I think this is about her thinking she can't get a major label deal. Like someone else mentioned, she is very sheltered from the world and probably has absolutely no idea that she could release a record on a small label and sell 200,000 copies and make MORE money than a major would get her for sales of 800,000. Plus, she is used to getting big assed advanced checks for records. We know how our girl HATES change.
No one is going to give her a big advance again. The records don't sell well enough. A major label record has to sell about 400k copies just to break even. I don't think she made any real money off TISL or SYW. Especially SYW. It didn't even sell a million copies. They probably only made money of the last 400 sold. That's MAYBE 2 bucks a record. Split 4 ways. That's about 200k a piece. Minus taxes equals about 140 if they have good accountants. Maybe another 50 for songwriting royalties. That doesn't pay her expenses for 3 months, I would think. All the money is made on the road. Making the records at this point IS all about art. And she ought to get her ass in the studio and make a record either way. Somebody needs to sit her down and explain this to her .

Yeah, like Stevie hasn't got enough money to live a fabulous lifestyle even if she never toured or recorded again. Plus I imagine those royalties she'll get from Rumours and those Greatest Hits albums, will keep her more than comfortable even her last days.
Maybe it's just me, but I like to think artists are making music that they think is good, regardless of how it's gonna sell. If you think that's stupid fine, but I prefer the artistic vision over the quick buck.
God that makes me sad to think that Stevie might not record another album because she thinks "only my devoted fans are gonna hear this". What a depressing thought. I hope to god she's not really like that, but if you think that's reasonable

WTH...how can you sell out when you have devoted your entire life your music? She has put out quite a few solo albums...maybe she wants to change her life in certain ways? She has to record forever or she is selling out? Maybe she wants her final album to be with the Mac..personally I think that will be her last big tour. I said several months ago that I sense a change in Stevie...as in she is moving into other areas of her life. Maybe she will write poetry books or coffee table books or do a soundtrack here and there or do her little fantasy Rhiannon movie. The interviewer is the one who brought up radio sales. That is not the reason Stevie isnt doing another studio album. To call her a sellout because maybe she is tired or otherwise happy not sitting in the studio and wants to use her creativity in different ways is sad.
PS..of course she wants to retire to a fabulous life and the touring is all about the money. She makes no money off studio albums but has put them out anyway! After all that she has gone through, she deserves to live a nice life. She has always worked hard.

After 35 years of entertaining audiences, some might say that Nicks owes her fans little more than to show up, sing her hits and go home.Mr. Baron has obviously never visited the Ledge.
The news that Stevie may not record another solo album is extremely disappointing one way or the other, but my personal take on it is not that Stevie feels she has to be commercially successful to be artistically successful, but rather that the albums have to make money in order for her to be able to continue recording. When you're signed with a big label, you can't afford musicians and studio time if you're not somehow turning a profit.
Sparky has the right idea about recording albums at a lower cost for an independent label, and then actually making more money on less copies sold.
Unfortunately though, I believe Stevie is still bound to her 3-album deal with Warner Bros. (which would have two left on it, of course), so she can't exactly go and record an album for Sanctuary. She'd have to either fulfill her deal with WB, and take a major loss because of lower sales. Or buy herself out of her contract and take a big loss that way.
Seems like a Catch-22, but I hope she finds a way around it, because I think she still has a lot to say.

I'm only on Page 3 of reading everyone's reactions, but my thought is that Stevie was indicating she could go in and record a solo cd tomorrow, but does not know if she could get it released by a major label. I assume she still is under contract to Reprise and/or Warner Brothers, but then again, perhaps not. For example, totally different genre of music, but Donna Summer is under contract to either Universal or Sony, i forget which- but the contract is only for her catalog material, which has meant about 4 'greatest hits' releases from her in the past year with maybe one or 2 new tracks on each one, or 'previously unavailable on cd' tracks added to the mix of hits.
I think even if an artist sells platinum, or close to it, it's not enough for the major labels and people like Stevie and Fleetwood Mac DO quietly get dropped. Whoever had the idea of her going to a smaller specialty label; it was a good one. The major labels seem to require 5 million + to stay behind an artist. I personally miss singles, which are all but extinct. I wish Stevie could put out a live 'Rock and Roll' cover backed with a live 'Fall From Grace'-- :)
Rambling...if Reprise was disappointed that TISL peaked first week at #5 then declined quickly, they can only blame themselves for pushing 'Every Day' on VH1 and making Stevie sing it on Rosie, Letterman, etc.-- (and yes i do recall 'Fall From Grace' being sung on the Blockbuster Awards before the cd was released)-- but, according to Lisa Marie Presley, at least, once a cd is released these days, the label requires that ONLY the lead song be performed during tv promotion rather than trying to get audiences interested in other songs on the cd. So if the particular song doesn't become a hit, its tough luck for the artist. And not many people were set on fire by 'Every Day'-- yet of course 'POTU' hit #1 on the Dance Charts and sold ok as a maxi-single- I just think Stevie's comments reflected that it is hard to get major label support these days, after her experiences with TISL and 'Say You Will-- because 'Peacekeeper' was pretty much the Fleetwood Mac version of 'Every Day'- "after a long time away, here's the new Fleetwood Mac song and isn't it bland"-- whoever is choosing their lead songs to go to radio is INSANE- "Miranda" or "Everybody Finds Out" would have given
'Say You Will' legs, but like TISL, it peaked first week and declined steadily.

Neither did Bowie, or Lauper, or Heart, or any of the others that are now currently on independent labels.
That "greatest hits" set that was rumoured for Stevie earlier this year would have been one more step towards fulfilling her contract quickly, so she could move on to another label, and we all saw what kind of reaction that received.

And not many people were set on fire by 'Every Day'-- yet of course 'POTU' hit #1 on the Dance Charts and sold ok as a maxi-single- I just think Stevie's comments reflected that it is hard to get major label support these days, after her experiences with TISL and 'Say You Will-- because 'Peacemaker' was pretty much the Fleetwood Mac version of 'Every Day'- "after a long time away, here's the new Fleetwood Mac song and isn't it bland"-- whoever is choosing their lead songs to go to radio is INSANE- "Miranda" or "Everybody Finds Out" would have given
'Say You Will' legs, but like TISL, it peaked first week and declined steadily.
I disagree when it comes to Say You Will, it had phenomenal promotion and label support. TISL? Yeah, they fudged up big time with Every Day. What a blunder that was.

But then Blondie didn't still have a contract with a big label, that they were beholden to. Correct?
Neither did Bowie, or Lauper, or Heart, or any of the others that are now currently on independent labels.
That "greatest hits" set that was rumoured for Stevie earlier this year would have been one more step towards fulfilling her contract quickly, so she could move on to another label, and we all saw what kind of reaction that received.
Bowie did, with Virgin. After he bought out his contract and his Virgin releases, he created Iso and got Sony to distribute.
I don't buy this "beholden to a big label" business. Miss Nicks knew going in that her albums weren't going to be hot sellers, how could she not? Yet she signed a three album deal, anyway. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Holy Crap...I replied to Curtie without reading the last three pages. Stevie is now selling out??
I can see why some fans think she's being a sellout, but I don't think so. You're probably on to something when you say she doesn't want to explain why she likely won't do another solo record. Could it be possible Stevie wants to do other things? She's devoted her entire life to the music business and her fans. The way fans are reacting to her hints at not recording solo anymore, is it any wonder she might be gun shy about saying the real reason? Maybe she IS tired and doesn't want to do this anymore? I'd love more music, too, but the woman deserves to do whatever the hell she wants to do at this point in her life. If she doesn't record again she doesn't deserve to be lambasted. She's given enough already (and has been handsomely paid for it.) ON EDIT PER DAVID. ;)

I have a way for her to get out of her two album contract though: it's called an outtakes album, part one and two :)It's actually very interesting that you mention this, because in late 2003/early 2004, I was told by someone who I trust as a source, that Stevie had pretty much pitched exactly that to Warner Bros: an album of demos and outtakes, released "as is," with one or two brand new songs to round it out.
I was later told that they ultimately declined. :(

Of course not. But if, in fact, she doesn't record more material because it doesn't sell the way she wants it to or won't get airplay, I have every right to express my disappointment and disgust at that line of thinking. We don't necessarily know if that's the case, though, and I hope it isn't because it would only serve to perpetuate the belief that veteran artists simply aren't artistically viable anymore because they don't sell loads of records; that they're past their prime and should get out of dodge.

Wow, I'm really motified at the attitude I'm getting from this thread. And you people call yourselves fans? Why not chain her to a piano and make her sing to you until her fingers bleed? Yeah, because she obviously owes you.
First of all, take a conversation you had with a friend last year about any random thing. Now imagine if thousands of people took every last word of that conversation as gosple and held you to it. Pretty horrid stuff, huh? This is exactly what you are doing. When you do interviews all the time they become like random conversation. Sometimes you say things off the cuff that you are feeling at that moment, but by the next day you feel totally different. We do this all the time but people usually don't write it down and come after us for it later. Cut her some slack, kids.
And you know, being that you enjoy her music does not give you the right to tell her how to live her life or manage her carreer. How many times did someone say "she should..." or "why doesn't she..." in this thread? I have an answer, because she is Stevie Nicks and you're not! How's that? She chose a carreer doing something she loves, something so few of us get to do. Along with the artistic integrity of writing intensely personal songs, there is also tons of things to deal with because this is also your job. Every failure means that you don't have the clout to do the next project you want to do. Every setback means that the next time you want to support an artist or do a show or put out a CD you may find yourself with dozens of record exec vampires telling you what to write and how to portray yourself. It's not about the money, it's about the industry. And if you don't work in the music business, do us all a favor and stop talking about it like you do. There is so much more involved than walking into a nightclub with a band and putting on a show.
I hope to God she doesn't read this "fan forum". I'm so dissappointed in those of you who spend your time trashing her. I thought this was a place for her admirers. If you like her then let her do what she wants, enjoy what she gives us. If she handed you all her recordings on a silver platter or if she threw you crumbs every few years, it would be up to her. And that is what is fair. She does not owe you anymore than you owe her.
Damn, I was in a good mood today and now I'm all crabby. :P

Oh this is so depressing. :(
On one hand Stevie is saying she is getting better day by day with her writing and then turns around and says she is not sure about doing another solo album?
I agree about taking what she says with a grain of salt, but it does sound like
the wind was taken out of her angelic wings for some reason.
Stevie loves to tour so I don't think we will never see her again on stage.
Just take into account that quote about her in the wheel chair with Rhinestones and feathers hotglued to it. :D But it almost sounds like she is content on just singing and touring with the same old songs, which she loves to do. But Stevie, the world needs more of your great new songs to inspire and rock out to.
Okay, who has Tom Petty's number? This is an emergency. "This is serious."
Stevie, there is more to music than getting it played on the radio.
MMM, maybe she does need to take that much needed vacation. Maybe she is just plain ole' tired right now and doesn't want to think about what all is involved with another solo release.
And what about this Rhiannon project? I wonder if she is putting off a solo release to concentrate on that? But then again, you would think that a movie soundtrack would be released and that takes work too.
We need to start a grass roots campaign or something to convince Stevie to make another solo record. Make signs for the remaining concerts saying
Please do another solo record or if anyone has a meet and greet somehow... mention it would be great if she did another solo record.
Sorry this post is so long, but I am just dumbfounded at Stevie's remarks.
Stevie has so much more to give to the world.

As for discussing Stevie's comments, I don't see the point of this message board if we can't do that. It gets old pretty quick if all there is, is fawning about how great she is.

And far more success on both sides of the Atlantic.
I'd be willing to bet he's in a much better place financially than Stevie is.
When Stevie signed her contract in '95/'96, the music industry wasn't quite where it is today. Sure, there were some serious cracks in the foundation, but it's only been within the last 5 years that even the major veteran artists have found themselves getting dropped by their labels.
In fact, the absolute best thing that could happen to Stevie right now (if she does in fact want to continue recording) would be for Warners to drop her, but they haven't even dropped Lindsey despite his lower sales and the paucity of his releases.

I agree, and I think it's a combination of her getting ready to call it quits and having to deal with that stupid three album contract that she signed. I've thought that the end is near ever since the SYW tour and if she doesn't do something fresh pretty soon, i.e. a new album, Stevie Nicks the Nostalgia Act will be her undoing before she gets a chance to officially announce that she's quitting. Unfortunately, she has that deal with Warners that she foolishly signed and unless she buys it out, we're not going to see anything from her. However, I don't think she'll buy it out because she thinks that her albums don't make enough steak for her to waste money on a) buying out her contract and b) releasing material independently or on a small label. So, we won't get anything from her either way and it all boils down to album sales and how she doesn't sell enough of them.

As I've said throughout this thread, if she wants to take it easy and doesn't want to record anything fine, but she is quoted in that article saying "I think I get better as a writer every day because I work on it constantly." So she must think her new material is good.

As far as meet and greets, I'd like to know how in the hell you get to be part of that. That pricks me a little.
I do love that she does the handshake at the end of EO17 because it really sets her apart from other performers. And her comments about the soldiers was really nice.
I liked that ending bit also. Very cool of her, and she's right that it doesn't really matter what your feelings are about the war, you can certainly still have compassion for all that have been wounded.
And I also agree that I'd love to know how people get to do meet and greets. it seems like folks win these stupid contests on the radio or something and not even know who the heck FM are really are, and those will be the people who get back there.
At some show..I can't even remember where or when , but I guess it was during the Dance tour...we ended up in that 'holding room' after the show, where sometimes you can catch a glimpse of band people/asociates. John happend to come out to speak to someone, and as he was leaving, a friend we were with pointed out to him that "The Adelsons" were there (while i was trying to work up the nerve to go over to him... )-- and I think the first thing he said was, "Are you coming back to the meet and greet?" and I was like "Nah, I think this is it, right here." LOL. We couldn't get back there, geez, i wish!!!! Oh wait, now i remember, we were with Brett Tuggle and even he said he didn't think he could get us back. The security was pretty heavy.

Is that you Stevie? Is this aka High Priestess, the word crumbs rings a bell

I went back and reread the article. It said that Stevie is unsure about releasing another solo album and she doesn't know what to do. So, I am now going to take this in stride. It's not like she said she is definately not releasing a solo album. She is just unsure at this point.
We can look forward to the possibility of the recording of the Gold Dust show with the Melbourne Symphony next year. :D
And who knows, the Rhiannon project could come to fruition. It does seem like it is Stevie's "path" if you will to finally make this project a reality.
Or these remarks are just to stir up some debate as to the horrible state that radio is in today and the whole music industry in general. Who knows?
Only Stevie knows what Stevie will do next.

Stevie, what has happened to you?
Her fears are part of her nature, no? It's her talent, she has the right to address it in the way she wants, for me. We'll see. I'm sure after all those years in music business and all the up and downs she had, we'd be all steady as rocks in our decisions. So why aren't we all rockstars?

She's given her entire her life to her music and fans.I must have missed the boat on that. I actually had to pay a lot of money all these years for all the Stevie Nicks albums & magazines & memorabilia I wanted, & I also had to pay for all the Stevie Nicks shows I saw.
But now you're saying that some fans (how many?) got all that as a gift? How cool is that!! But I wonder how they managed it, because in my case, buying Stevie's work all my life cost me thousands of dollars.

What's all this talk about Stevie wanting to retire?? She's only 57, not 87, and there are plenty of older artists who are still plugging away and some who are still moving tons of albums. Ask Jimmy Buffett and James Taylor how their last albums sold. Hello, :wavey: this is her life! She doesn't have a husband or children. We are her children. Her songs are her children. And writing and performing songs are the things that she loves more than anything. And ask anyone who has been a fan of Stevie's for the last 20 years or so, she truly is near the top of her game TODAY.
If anything, I think the hint at performing with a symphony in Australia is perhaps a way for her to pave the way into another musical direction. The cynical side of me thinks she is trying to mine the same territory as Carly Simon (who is 60 and just had her highest debuting CD this week with an album of standards), Rod Stewart and even Joni Mitchell by recording an album of standards. But the hopeful side of me believes that Stevie is just the quintessential rawk chick, and if it don't rock hard, she ain't messin' with no album of standards. Sure she has made some unfortunate decisions in the past, but you can never ever say that she was crass enough to willingly do something to make more money or to sell more recordings. She probably has caved into record label pressure a time or two... or fifty. But her overall body of work suggests that she has a singular vision and she has generally stuck to her guns.
I hope that whatever crisis of confidence she is going through right now passes quickly enough. We loves ya, Stevie. Chin up, grrrrl! :wavey: :xoxo:

If Stevie wants to retire or do other things I totally respect that. It's just the thought that she doesn't want to record another album because of the sales aspect. I still love her to death but that makes me sad more than anything.
She NEVER said that was the reason she may not put out another album, the interviewer did.

There are two alternatives... having no music to buy at all, or just choosing not to buy it.
I feel lucky to have that option, so I guess that's why I consider it a "gift."

But Stevie has never been known to make smart business decisions, none of the Macsters really have. :laugh:They're part of a generation & a mindset that don't understand the advantages of, for example, Internet distribution channels. they all still think along the lines of the older paradigms: big record deal with major company (the bigger, the better), major tour of arenas & amphitheaters, marketing push for airplay on pop radio (which is as tightly controlled today as it ever was), etc.

In my case, there is the figurative side of the music -- a 'gift' to me or to the world -- & the literal side of the music -- a commodity that I have paid for. But you're right -- perhaps we should refrain from using the word "gift" in regards to Stevie's (or anyone's) music, and just say that some (all?) of us are just happy that we've had the luxury of being able to buy Stevie's songs, and feel lucky that she has made something we enjoy so much available for us to purchase if we so desired.

Stevie's attitude about not wanting to record another solo album because she is no longer a radio artist is exactly what I have feared all along. If she feels she is no longer going to get radio airplay. So in spite of her claim that she is still writing great songs she may not bother to make another record .This is depressing .Even if she left Reprise ,a label like Interscope would be glad to have her and she could focus on art and not commerce.I'm sure Emmylou Harris and Loretta Lynn were not concerned about whether they were going to get as much airplay as Britney or Kelly Clarkson when they made their recent and stunning albums.Stevie still has enough of a loyal following to almost guarantee a gold album and pay for it's production costs if losing money is her concern ,and no one poor selling album is not going to ruin her financially ..not even close.Man her attitude is so disappointing but not a shock to me .I saw this coming.

I don't think anyone feels the woman owes them anything. Other than a decent show when they pay for it....
The thing is, she has always hooted and hollered about making music forever. It's her life ! She gave up everything for it ! And this recent statement can be interpreted as the hint of a defeat of some sort. I never take her all that seriously, to be honest. Her plans as outlined in interviews rarely have much bearing on reality. Remember the Jim Ladd interview about Vegas ?
I doubt she'll stop making records. The fact that she said that in an interview could very well have an indy label rep offering to buy out her contract (if she indeed is still bound to it) and starting over with her. A lot of these boutique labels just want marquee value and she is a name that is worth something in those circles. Like she has said many times, what else is she gonna do ? She isn't going to make a movie. I am in that business, and frankly, if she wanted to get a movie off the ground, she should have started to get backing five years ago. If she starts this fall with a producer she might get something on film by 2008. Might. It'd take over a year to get a script done and approved, then longer to get it developed and approved again, rewrites, attaching a director, casting...la dee dah. I know people who took 4 years to get a series pilot done and in the can. I doubt it will happen.
Books ? Maybe. Takes almost a year to publish one after it's turned in. How long does it take her to record a record ? We'd see a book in 2008 too, if we're lucky. Love her dearly, but I don't think she has clue about the realities of either business. I think she'll be in the music industry till they haul her out in a gilded friggin' box. And I ? Will be there till the bitter end, Baby. :woohoo:

I personally thought the Gold Dust Summer Tour was put into place by Stevie to rebuild excitment for her songs, and build up anticipation for a future new release. It seems to make sense if you think about it because the turn out for all of her concerts have been great, and if all of those fans, including the ones who don't go to concerts are reminded of her great work as a solo artist, and all of her successful solo singles, than they will be eager to buy another solo album that she would release soon after the ending of the summer tour.

Am I going crazy here or something? No one has said Stevie owes us another album and that she doesn't deserve to live her life in peace or whatever.
It's her reasoning that it's not worth recording another album because it won't sell in big numbers that's disappointing and frustrating.
I'm sure I can survive without another solo album...
Wow, it's like hitting my head against the wall, over and over.
Did I miss something? Where does she give this disappointing reasoning? Let's differentiate between the reporter's ideas and Stevie's words before we assume that the reason she doesn't want to put out another solo album is illegitimate.

Excellent post. Especially about whoever is picking the singles. The record industry is run by (not so good) "business" people, not by actual knowledgeable music people. I think that contributes to Stevie's exaspiration regarding the state of things these days. I've been lamenting about some of the singles decisions since The Wild Heart but it's gotten dramatically worse since.

She isn't going to make a movie. I am in that business, and frankly, if she wanted to get a movie off the ground, she should have started to get backing five years ago. If she starts this fall with a producer she might get something on film by 2008. Might. It'd take over a year to get a script done and approved, then longer to get it developed and approved again, rewrites, attaching a director, casting..
Maybe she already got the backing for the film and that is why Stevie mentioned September as when she wanted to start working on the Rhiannon project. Stevie might have the script already done or rewritten. Stevie has had this idea for the Rhiannon movie for a very long time now, so who knows.
I am sure Stevie might be weighing the options between the Rhiannon project and another solo release.

Absolutely. It's the same venues every freaking year. There are other states than Jersey, PA, Florida, and CA.
Hey, leave PA and Jersey alone. We like all the FM/SN concerts we get to see. You're just jealous. lol.

This is the first post that I've read that has touched on what I was feeling when reading through this barrage of criticisms and self centered crap.
I don't remember reading that Stevie was worried about sales of a solo record, but rather she touched on the sentiment of why bother to record some music if "no one" is going to hear it. It was more of a dig at radio today and that artists are not given a fair chance of being HEARD.
Lighten up folks and have a little faith.

My satnd on this whole situation is that Stevie is and always be a legend. Whether she sells millions of copies on any future releases shouldn't matter.
Stevie needs to realise that when she is 80 we will still be rocking to Stand Back ,EO17 etc. I also agree that some the choices for singles over the years were crappy. I mean Two kinds of love and Whole lotta trouble blech. Fire Burning and Long Way to go were much better songs. Nightbird... Yuck. Wild Heart was a better song I thought.
One thing that I always wonder is if Chris had agreed to work with the mac on SYW and tour behind it is whether or not it would have made a difference interms of sales etc.

Sure they are. But from an artists' viewpoint like Stevie's, it's all about having her music heard, or shall we say, touching people's lives. She doesn't need money.

I must have missed the boat on that.
Meeeoooow! You're right. ;) I don't condsider my fandom as a gift, either. I haven't spent much money on Stevie since the 70's, but I did shell out for 4 days seeing her in Vegas. That didn't come free. She works for a living and I pay for her craft if I like it. I complain if I pay for it and I don't like it. If she wants to put out new music I might buy it if it's any good. If she's done recording my life will go on.

She doesn't need money.Well, then I'll say here & now that Stevie & Fleetwood Mac & whoever else is in the band at this point have been utterly foolish about ignoring the Internet as a distribution mechanism, which has so many advantages over traditional models. They seem stuck in the past -- a little bit like our governments, which cast wary, unbelieving glances at clean-fuel automobiles.
What has inevitably happened to Fleetwood Mac is that they are suffering from being left behind (labels harass them & abuse them, radio ignores them, fan bases & concert audiences dwindle) because they themselves haven't been on board with new technologies (for example, live CDs sold at concerts or MP3 downloads of new material).

If she wants to put out new music I might buy it if it's any good. If she's done recording my life will go on.As many people know, it doesn't matter to me whether Stevie is done singing live or recording or writing books or making movies because I like just the old stuff, & I can always have that -- now that I have it anyway.
But I imagine for many other fans, it's a bummer. If the year were 1982, the prospect of Stevie's not recording any more would hit me hard, so I can empathize with younger kids these days, who just have a different frame of reference.

Since you've already given my opinion I shouldn't bother, but to expand, of course she's in it for the money. You said she doesn't need money. Everyone needs money. She's in it for the money, the fame, the status, the lifestyle, the perks and fabulous trappings that come with her level of fame. She's certainly interested in music or she'd have done something else for a living.

She has THAT already. She continues what she's doing to touch people by writing and performing. In my opinion, everything you mentioned in your post is secondary to her. Getting back to the original point of her not wanting to record another solo record was because I think she feels she would not be able to reach out and affect people's lives with her new songs, not because she wouldn't get what she already has(money, fame, staus, lifestyle etc.)

OMG, you guys, I got it! She just said & implied those things because she wants to see how the fans will react! That's it! She wants to see if anyone will care if she decides never to record again!
Karen? KAREN!!! Karen, you beyotch, are you reading this?!?! Good! Then put Sulamith down & run & tell Ms. Nicks that she MUST record another album! NOW! No ifs, ands or butts. And get Petty on the phone, for God's sake. He made her stronger once, he can do it again. :D
When I read the article, my heart literally sank a little - I felt it sink. Really. But realistically, I know that she cannot keep recording indefinitely. That makes me sad, but there's nothing I can do about it.
I do hope that she does record again, on her terms & without concern about sales/airplay. I just want to hear more good music from Stevie Nicks. Did I buy any of my Tori CDs because of radio airplay? Did I buy Robinella & the CC String Band because they went platinum? Did I buy Heart's Jupiter's Darling because of that hit tune on the radio? Petty's new stuff is rarely played on radio, but he still churns out good, quality, rockin' albums time after time. Henley's last CD had one decent hit, but other than that, nada. It was still a damn GOOD CD. Cyndi Lauper plays small college venues & casinos and sells them out consistently, kicking ass every night to a crowd of 1000 adoring fans - isn't that better than playing to half-full venues of 5000 peeps, only about 1/4 of whom are true fans that are really into the music?
I know, it doesn't really matter what I say/think/want. If she never records a solo album again, I will live. But I will be very sad.

Stevie will have to have a fundamental change of heart and begin catering to her hardcore fan base which she knows are there before these things happen with her.Instead of pandering to the ever dwindling audience of boomers who are casual fans at best and would not likley buy any new albums or are even aware of their existence. They simply go to the concerts for nostalgia and to hear the big hits of their youth.

Earlier in the thread I suggested she might already be planning on going to a small indie label. I also said Stevie discusses certain things in interviews one way when she has business reasons, and another way when she wants to make a personal point. I don't think she's talking out of her hat (at least not in this interview. ) She might be thinking out loud to see if the record labels hear her voice trailing off as she talks about not doing a new solo record.

She wont retire. She won't retire. She won't retire. She NEEDS to perform and record. It's a soul thing. She will be in Branson in a wheel chair! She just gets in these moods and goes out of them just as fast. Don't read into any of it. She has been going in/out of these moods since the beginning. (A FRITZ comment comes to mind). Just let her be, she will get rested after these tours, and get the "ITCH" again. I am an old fart (over 40) who has followed her for decades. She isn't going away soon. So just chill! She will mutter and moan, and make noises and then be right back! So use the down time (And cash) to fill in the spots in your collectibles - and save up for the next round. It will be here sooner than you think! I , for one, enjoy a break now and again in order to take everything in and replenish the Stevie budget. I think what we need to do is contact Christopher Nicks somehow.
I know, I know... most people aren't crazy about the guy, but if you tell him there are ways to make good money....
Explain that Stevie can make more money for less copies sold, if she went with an independent label. That she's pretty much guaranteed to sell a good 500,000 copies, even with the severely limited promotion, and after the first 20,000-30,000, it would all be profit.
And/or explain that if they made her new music available online via Nicksfix or some other outlet, they could charge .99 per song, and most (maybe all) of it would be profit.
Who wants to volunteer to contact Chris? ;)

I'm the opposite. I don't play her solo songs unless I'm in a certain mood, but I've seen more than my share of her concerts. I'm a big concert goer. I have to give Stevie her due for being a worthwhile performer this tour. I would miss her shows more than her songs, unless her songs can help keep FM going a few more years. I'd probably buy any FM album with the current 4 members expecting it to be good, but I might not do that for Stevie's solo stuff. Maybe I would if she went indie and worked with a producer I liked.

I'm a diehard Fleetwood Mac fan, but 9 times out of 10, I prefer Stevie's solo work to her Mac work. It has a different vibe... more unabashedly Stevie, with all of her eccentricities front and center... and it hits me in a different way.
I have an mp3 disc that I made, consisting of every song Stevie has officially released over the years, solo or with Fleetwood Mac, from 'Buckingham Nicks' onward (but not including any of the guest appearances she did on other artists' albums), and it's not even funny how often I listen to that thing... mainly the solo album material.
That's what I'd miss... not the tours.

It's actually very interesting that you mention this, because in late 2003/early 2004, I was told by someone who I trust as a source, that Stevie had pretty much pitched exactly that to Warner Bros: an album of demos and outtakes, released "as is," with one or two brand new songs to round it out.
I was later told that they ultimately declined. :(
Fools. Can you imagine what's in those vaults that we haven't heard?

Why are you guys making such a big stink about Stevie being a sellout? It was clear to me that the "no radio hits" comments were from the reporter's head and not Stevie's. It was not in quotation marks... she just plain did NOT say that.
I am sad that she says she may not record another album. But, I am pretty sure she will be eating her words soon. I have a feeling after six months of being off the road and out of the spotlight she will once again be motivated to do an album.
And if she truely doesn't want to do another album, then I guess it is okay with me because I want her to be happy. However, it would be a truely sad.
In a way, I feel like Stevie has come full circle with the Gold Dust tour.... I feel content right now. I have seen Stevie on tour eight times, I have held her hands and told her I loved her! I have half a dozen solo records and countless Fleetwood Mac records. And if she truely wants to move on to something that would make her happier, then it is fine with me. She has given me more then enough... At least she is going out with a bang and is going out on top, if this is the end.
But like I sad, I don't think this is the end of her recording career and it certainly isn't the end of her touring career.

I totally agree with this, I think she may be trying to give Warners the flick but subtly.

"Stevie Nicks - Read Between My Lines: The Truth Is Out There"
by KenshiMaster16

"I would like to be able to play Vegas a couple times a year because
then I don't have to travel," said Nicks, who lives in Los
Angeles. "So I said, `OK, I'll put my summer off. Let's go do this.'
But this is a show that we would never have put together had it not
been for going into Celine's theater that is like 110 feet wide with
300-foot IMAX screens. You just can't take your band in there and
play. You have to build a world, and we did. We spent two months
doing it and it's an amazing world. So we came out of Vegas with a
outrageous show that we've seen dozens of times before but with a few
surprises added just to... you know, mix things up a little." Stevie grins.
Nicks said she is unsure if she'll release another solo record.
"I really don't know what to do," she said. "I'm totally writing. I
could go into the studio tomorrow and start a solo record. I think I
get better as a writer every day because I work on it constantly. So
it's not like I couldn't do it, but ... I want to put out an amazingly 'We've
heard all this before' tour and then go sit at home on my butt until Christmas.
Then my mind'll probably be changed from being so bored and having so
many new songs and re-worked old songs stacking up so high all over the place, I'll just have to do another CD."
Why bother when it has little chance of playing on the radio, which means fewer people have a chance to hear the record? Well there is one reason. So many young people have been to see her with their parents over the past four years on her three different tours with and without Fleetwood Mac. And there is always the internet, that plays basically anything that groups of all ages listen to constantly more than your average radio station. The internet is not the 'Information Super-Highway' for nothing. If word wouldn't get out about 'Rock Legend Stevie Nicks Pumped Over Brand New Up-Coming Album', then people really don't know how to read articles like the one I'm writing right now!
"As for Fleetwood Mac, we always say it's possibly the end, or we'll never
do it again, but we always say that. We just can't go on for five or more years at a time without playing together. Fleetwood Mac is it's own person. It lives and breathes and will never die out until it's forced to. I'm pretty sure in two or three years time, we'll do another studio album and a tour. When Fleetwood Mac finally says goodbye and I gracefully bow out into retirement is when me, Lindsey, Mick and John all have to use walkers to get out onto the stage!" Stevie chuckles.
Once again, rock fans, young and old, wait patiently to either be enchanted by Nicks' solo albums and tours, or Chained into yet another Fleetwood Mac CD and a 'hugely successful for a bunch of 50 year olds' tour.

I don't ever believe articles/interviews as so much is taken out, over emphasized etc. Unless you get a recording of the actual un-editted interview, chances are it has been altered to suit the author. I for one have heard Stevie say in recent interviews she is now sober, but in another interview say she drinks a little wine now and then. Which is it?? She's been to Betty Ford, and she knows what sober really is. Or did the interviewer say it? Or was it assumed by the interviewer. So much gets twisted.
Creative people often say they aren't going to do XYZ again, that this is it, they are done. Yet if they love what they do, and I honestly believe Stevie enjoys touring, performing, writting and recording....she'll be back very soon with something. If you are creative, you can't really turn that off. You do need down time. But you eventually feel the tug on the inside to do something else....Just my 2 cents.
Also, someone mentioned about whether SYW would have done better sales if Chris was on board. I think it would have, just because of public perception and nothing else. I wouldn't go see the Eagles without Joe Walsh, or buy one their recordings without Glen Frey on board.

Perhaps Stevie should stop paying attention to the disgusting commercial radio US has to offer, and focus on the awesome public stations in this country! It's the public stations (Oregon has incredible ones: KRVM, KLCC, KWVA) who play the "old wrinklies", and offer the variety and diversity that will always include the Fleetwood Mac and Nicks as well as tons of independent artists who can't get a shoe-in on those large market, pre-programed (by some young idiot halfway across the country) BS stations...
(scuse the rant, but I really hate those stations SO much!)

Since i have been away all weekend, this is my first post on this issue...
my take is, Stevie has and always will be as much image as she is substance... her beauty, her style, her mystique, in addition to her songwriting all make up what we know as "Stevie Nicks"..... I think it is very hard for her to admit that she is not as popular as she would like to BELIEVE that she is in 2005....
she was in fact, along with Debbie Harry, one of the two leading ladies in rock n roll and pop music in the late 70's/early 80's... but "that was then, this is now"...
She needs to get over the fact that she is NOT anymore and just focus on her music if she really is the "mad songwriter" she claims to be...
i agree with many of the posts on this subject, but i also believe that eventually she WILL in fact come out with another solo album.... i think in the end her big ego will overtake her fear of not succeeding... :wavey:

Actually having been a huge fan when Stevie was the IT girl and at the height of her popularity I will say that the difference between now and then aside from her no longer having enormous airplay or much radio airplay at all for new material ,is that since the Dance her place in rock history has been reassesed by the vast majority of critics .During her heyday she was derided more often than praised. That tide has turned and she is much more venerated by the critics as well as other music artists.I think she is at least somewhat aware of this and if she could get past the idea of not getting the radio airplay and focusing on the art she could create some great work.Remember one of the trepidations before Bella Donna was released was that her solo material would be too 'artsy and eccentric ' for mainstream radio .Now that she no longer has to be concerned with radio play lists she could really run with this side of her music and she has enough of a hard core fan base that it would still sell in respectable numbers.

I'm sure it has to be frustrating to think that only your core audience will hear your songs, and no one else.

I think it's impossible to work in music business without commercial considerations (they can be on different levels, but they're always there if you choose to record), but the right producer and the shape of a real project could be very helpful to win these kinds of doubts. I'm sure it's only matter of time.

because she had probably convinced herself that the only reason why she hadn't had a hit since 1989 was due solely to the fact that she was addicted to klonopin and her "creativity" was sucked out of her ever since; thus resulting in no hit records.... hate to say it, but even if she never did any drugs from 1986-1993, she still most likely would not have had a hit during that time period...
she can't blame klonopin for everything... time does not stand still.. perhaps if she remained consistant throughout those years and worked as hard at staying "popular" as say, Madonna, she could have.... but very very unlikely :distress:
