Might be one of my top 20. The music gets me moving right away (I will admit to doing the girls' patented shoulder sway to this song.) It's not a tremendously powerful vocal really, with the exception of "I don't believe that" which I love, and "Look in my eyes..." It's softer, more dreamy.
Favorite lyric:
"Love is a word that some entertain, if you find it you have won the game"
But live? Live, it is glorious. I know some people think it's just so-so, and that she should drop it. I disagree. It's way more powerful than the album version - it's almost like they are two different songs, they have a totally different feel for me. And, of course, "Mick says Stevie this is just one more link in the chain" and "tellmeisthereanyoneinthiswholewideworldthatcaneverreplaceme" are priceless.
I also find it interesting how she went from "I don't believe that" to "I have to believe that." And I love the different reponses to "tellmeisthere......" over the years: "I don't think so" and "If so, then take it away" and "and if so, then take it away, take away that heartache"
Discuss. :D

Yay!
I do like this song - moreso live.
I remember seeing Stevie in Albuquerque during the TISL tour - and it started raining when she came on stage - and kept raining - she was so cute and at one point was like, "well sometimes it just rains" and then when she played this song...oh man!!!
It was such an amazing experience - though I'm fairly certain that by the time I got up to the front of the stage I looked like a drowned rat...well a drowned rat with a rain-hair afro.

Love it! Even though she's done it live a lot I still enjoy hearing it and it still kicks ass.

I am just sick to death of it. Plus it leads into Dreams which I am also tired of hearing live for the past 20 years.

Outside the Rain . . . coool, baby, cooool.
I mean, it ain't Stevie's fault that she can't sing any more. The song is still cool.

LOVE this song. Top ten. I also love hearing it live. I am not sick of it at all. Awesome lyrics!

Great song. I think, musically, it's a bit.....different. But I love the lyrics. And it is fantastic live!

Top ten song definitely. I think it's the jewel in the crown of Bella Donna (I'm sure I've messed that metaphor up). Was the first "non-hit"/Timespace song I loved.
Love it as a lead into Dreams.
Pure perfection

One of my all-time favorite songs and the best song off of Bella Donna. I even like the TISL tour versions and that says something.

That reminds me of when I saw stevie in Denver at Fiddler's Green for the Enchanted tour. If I recall, Outside The Rain was the third song in the set....followed by Dreams of course. When she got to the first chorus...and she sang 'thunder only happens when it's raining' it started to rain. The audience shrieked and screamed with excitement....it was almost like Stevie made it rain! A little bit later, Stevie spoke to the audience and said something that went like this: "If I could make it stop raining, I would. See, I really don't have magic powers!" It was so cute, the way she said it. :woohoo:

I really like this song but only live. The TISL versions flubbed, but the OTR that I saw in mansfield this year was awesome!

I love this song so much that whens it leads into "Dreams", it keeps me from vomiting at the fact that I've heard "Dreams" 5347328758 times.
That also says alot...

I totally love this song...and I am so glad that it found it's way back into the set this year! The BELLA DONNA version is great (the Heartbreakers are backing her up and it doesn't get much better than that), but when this song is performed live, it takes on a whole other dimension...a true highlight, for me anyway. Great lyrics and always an emotional performance from Stevie. :wavey:

I've never been a big fan of OTR. Don't like the music much at all however I do feel some sense of loyalty to it because it's such a staple in her set and I've heard it live so many times. Even the songs I don't like seem to grow on me simply for the fact that I hear them live over and over and they start to become part of my memories and I feel connected to them. The best part of OTR live is the transition into Dreams "Love is a word that some entertain, if you find it you have won the game".

I liked Stevie's subtle lyric change at the Red Rocks show: "No love's that hard to change and this time, well, this time, I'M TIRED OF IT!"

WOOOOOOHOOOOO. Top 5 song for sure. I love this song to death. Everything about it, the music, the lyrics, her vocal. AND I think this song is the PERFECT opener to her live set and should never not open her set.

Top ten for me. I always love the HBO way, to this day.Outside the Rain/Dreams combo. I hope Stevie sticks to it. it gives me flashbacks to Apirl 1982 when the HBO special premiered. It drive me nuts on some web pages when they split in two for download. huh I hate that.

Another all-time fave since the very first listen. I am all about wanting Stevie to change things up and take risks on stage, but I am a traditionalist when it comes to her opening with this song!!!!! It's one of those things... it's "just not the same" when she doesn't.
I think I could easily assume that the "Love is a word..." phrase means a lot to almost everyone here.

ANY subtle lyric changes, intentional or not, are great IMO. I noticed Vegas Wed 5-11 went: "if so, then take it away, take away my heartache, take it away, take it away!"

I love ouside the rain!! I like the recorded version how it is moody, and sexy, but I love hearing it live! She always seems like SHE really likes this song, and hearing a live version of this anytime still always gives me that same amazing feeling I got when I saw her come on stage the very first time.

Definitely in my top 5 Stevie songs. This is one of those songs that puts Stevie at the top of her field. I prefer the live version because I think she puts more emotion into it.

This is my favorite Stevie solo song, no doubt. I know that some have pointed out the musical similiarities to "Dreams," but I don't really care. I love the lyrics, especially the line Paula mentioned at the beginning of this thread. It never gets old for me, though I prefer the album version to the live one and I have to say that I wish she hadn't done it live so many times so as not to risk people getting sick of it. Wonderful, wonderful song. It was an instant favorite when I first got Bella Donna.

I have to admit that I have never been super-crazy about this song. I think the overall melody and lyrics are mediocre at best. I remember playing one of the Enchanted box set CD's over the intercom at a gift shop I worked at, and a customer actually remarked when "OTR" was on, "what is this song? It's really bad."

Actually, it was a middle-aged woman, so I doubt that. Some people just don't like certain songs that other people do, what can I say? I was once watching the video of the HBO special, "Stevie Nicks in Concert" (the one from the Bella Donna tour), and "Gold and Braid" was playing. My mom, who is Stevie's age, walked in (this was toward the end of the song when Stevie was getting down with her tambo and doing the Charleston and stuff), and my mom goes, "Oh, Lisa, this sounds awful. You like this?" So I guess there's no accounting for taste!
