I downloaded this demo about two months ago and then never listened to it because I realised the title sucks. But now it popped up randomly on itunes, and I've had it on repeat for about an hour!

I love this song! I always thought it was a TOSOTM demo, but apparently it's a RAL demo. (I mustve confused it with equally awfully titled Tragedy of One's Own Soul, another demo I downloaded but havent listened to).

I love the singing, but then again I love the RAL voice. One thing cracks me up about it though, and that's when she sings "lonely as I am". With her way of singing it sounds to me like "Lonely as a ham"

Anyone else like this song?

Like most demos, I've never heard it. :(

I really should catch up with the rest of the 21st century and get into this whole downloading thing...

I've just not been able to get into this one. It's not bad, but there are many I like better. The lyrics flow together pretty well. I think if the sound were better....my copy sounds like a fan was blowing in front of the device that recorded it.

Stevie has so many RAL demos...I'm beating a dead horse with this comment, but I certainly hope she realizes that she will never re-record many of these, and thus issue them on her hopefully-soon-to-come remastered RAL double CD.

Maybe some kind, charitable soul would be willing to burn us a CD with some of these songs...

This song is one of the best RAL demos! Many of the RAL demos, like "It's Not a Dream", and "All the King's Horses" don't have much melody, but this has a good one. So somber, and with a touch of dread. The chorus is only sung once, but it is a whopper. When you think it's over, the second part kicks in, and her voice is as high-pitched and penetrating as I have ever heard. It reminds me of reading her voice described as "pleasingly sharp".

Chorus:
Well, love don't fail me now...don't let me go
End this emptiness and melt all the snow
Lonely as I am
I'm such a stubborn man
Love don't fail me now

And if you're looking for the light
You can turn from the pain
If you don't get it right
You can try it again
It's a matter of the heart
Or the heart of a mind
Love please save me
Don't let me be blind

I wonder whether this is really about a man separate from herself, or whether using the word "man" was a way of deflecting the scaryness of its lyrical forthrightness. Either way, I think "Lonely as I am, I'm such a stubborn man" is one of the best couplets she has ever written. Stevie was aware of how destructive her attitude and lifestyle was, but felt helpless to end the self-destruction.

This is my favorite part too! It makes the song. I love it!

That's exactly how I felt listening to it. Even though it seems a bit bad to say it, I really like somber Stevie and this song fits right in to that category.

Sorry to pick on your post but I'm always curious as to how people date demos and give them an album label when the info we have is sketchy at best. I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong but...

According to the master reels, the so-called full band version of "All the King's Horses" was recorded in May 1979. Hardly RAL era. As for the 8 minute repetitive demo, yes it's been circulated among RAL demo sets. However these compilations have been created by traders and fans making educated guesses, even inventing names along the way ("The Tower" for "Goodbye Baby", "Mystical Love" for "Rich Old Lady" and so on). You even get the same songs to appear on different "album sets" ("She Calls You Missing" or "Impossible Task" to name but a few).

Likewise, there is a drum machine demo of "Blue Lamp" which segues into "It's Not A Dream". "Blue Lamp" as everyone knows was a Bella Donna outtake which landed on the Heavy Metal soundtrack which was released, like Bella Donna, in 1981. Again what's the RAL connection?

Same goes for "Love Don't Fail Me Now". Could very well be an OSOTM outtake or even something else.

The truth is elsewhere :)

I love this song so much. Especially the "if you're looking for the light" part. As far as dating it, I've never been good at that, but, to me, it sounds mid to late 80s.
