View Full Version : Kinsey Scale

Did we ever do this??? I seem to remember somebody saying they were going to start this thread, but I never saw it.
Anywhooo... Where do you fall on the the Kinsey Scale?
This scale was developed by Dr. Alfred Kinsey and his associates in the late '40s and early '50s. These results were supported in studies conducted by Masters and Johnson and other sex researchers, though some more recent studies have reported lower rates nationally, with higher rates in urban areas. These studies collectively indicate there is a broad spectrum of sexual orientations - not just heterosexual and homosexual. Instead of looking a sexual orientation as an either-or condition, Kinsey developed a seven point continuum based on the degree of sexual responsiveness people have to the members of the same and other sex.
0 - exclusively heterosexual
1 - predominantly heterosexual, incidentally homoexual
2 - predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual
3 - equally heterosexual and homosexual
4 - predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual
5 - predominantly homosexual, incidentally heterosexual
6 - exclusively homosexual
It is necessary to consider a variety of activities in assessing an individual's ranking on the continuum:
· fantasies · dreams · thoughts
· frequency of sexual activities · emotional feelings
Therefore, many "heterosexuals" would fall, in fact, somewhere between 0 and 3 because they occasionally think/dream/fantasize about sexual activities with members of the same gender and/or occasionally act on these feelings.
Kinsey's researchers found that over a three-year period:
4 - 6% of men were rated as "6"
10 % of men were rated 4, 5, or 6
18% of men were rated as 3, 4, 5, or 6
37% of all men experienced orgasm in a sexual activity with another man at some time in their life.
60% of all men had some type of homosexual relationship before they were age 16.
30% of all men had some type of homosexual relationship between age 20 - 24.
Ranks for women were about one-half that of men (exact percentages were not provided by Kinsey). Keep in mind, this research was conducted as a time of lower sexual activity for women than recent surveys have indicated.
Research was conducted primarily with white college educated, volunteer subjects and with prisoners. This research did not clearly parcel out behaviors which did not persit from adolesence into adult life.

Have you folks seen "Kinsey" the movie? I really liked it... It's structured just like Kinsey's sex interview, in an attempt to disarm the viewer. One minute, you're watching a nice romantic, or even funny scene, then a jump cut happens and someone is full-face on the screen asking, "How do you feel about cunnilingus???"
By the way, on this scale I think I would be a 7 ... maybe 8. :D

Well, these days I'd be a 6.
14 years ago...in high school, and for a year or so afterwards, I would have fallen somewhere around a 4.
About three years ago, this girl I worked with...Olivia...we were at a party, and she beckons me to join her in the hallway. So I did, thinking she had something to tell me. Once I was in the hallway, she shoved me into another room, closed the door, and pushed me up against it, and before I knew what was happening, her tongue was in my mouth. Blech. Anyhow, I was trying to push her off of me, and she just said, "Come on honey, give me some sugar..." I was mortified! I did manage to get away after a moment, but needless to say, the experience was most unpleasant. I worked with this girl for a year prior to this, and she had never exhibited any interest in me.....so I guess she had some sort of pent up tension she needed to release.
The next day at work, she was not the least bit embarassed.....she seemed quite proud of herself. I, on the other hand, avoided her for a few days......until I was sure she wasn't going to jump me in the breakroom.

On a related note, you should all take this--http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=12680914741600896164
I scored "Mostly Gay"
"You are mainly homosexual, but you have a few heterosexual qualities.
You much prefer the same sex, but you have a mild interest in the
opposite sex. While you would jump at the opportunity to screw someone
of the same sex, you might be up for experimenting with members of the
opposite sex if given the opportunity. If you are sexually
inexperienced, you could shift on the spectrum at a later time
depending on whether you have sexual encounters with the opposite sex
and whether or not you like those encounters."
Sad how this quiz seems to be under the impression that sexual orientation is all about sex, though. :distress:

This thing is funny, I like their little "scientific diagram".
You are not exclusively heterosexual, but you prefer the opposite sex over the same sex. While you might be willing to fool around with the same sex to some extent, you would go all the way with the opposite sex. If you are sexually inexperienced, it is possible that this could change after you do some experimenting.

You scored -45 (-52 being completely gay, 0 being bisexual, and 52 being completely straight)
As of right now, you are interested in the same sex. You have very little to no sexual interest in the opposite sex. If you are sexually inexperienced at this point, it is possible that you have latent heterosexual tendencies that you have not yet discovered"

My results of the test:
Score: 4
Bi/Slightly Straight
For the most part, you are bisexual. You have a slight preference for the opposite gender, but either gender would suit you. If you are sexually inexperienced, it is possible that this will change after you do some experimenting.
What the hell is slightly straight???
estranged4life
07-25-2005, 07:17 PM
Mostly Straight
You scored 31 (-52 being completely gay, 0 being bisexual, and 52 being completely straight)
You are mainly heterosexual, but you have a few homosexual qualities. You much prefer the opposite sex, but you have a mild interest in the same sex. If you disapprove of homosexuality, it is likely that you act overly straight to deny your slight gay tendencies. If you are comfortable with your sexuality, you might be up for experimenting with members of the same sex if given the opportunity. If you are sexually inexperienced, you could shift on the spectrum at a later time depending on whether you have sexual encounters with the same sex and whether or not you like those encounters.

My sister Lesa (Who has lurked around on here recently) and myself had a discussion recently that went like this:
Me-"I could never become gay, Love p*ssy way too much..."
Lesa-"And I like the d*ck..."Well, when it comes to these tests, I don't think it's all about sexual intercourse. If that were the case, I would be exclusively gay beyond any shadow of a doubt because I can pretty much guarantee you that I will never be sleeping with a guy. But I can watch Ewan McGregor in Star Wars and swoon and be like, "Wow, he's really hot!" and that doesn't mean I would jump into bed with him. I can appreciate a good-looking guy and I'm not afraid that someone will question my sexual orientation if I say that a guy is really sexy. Chris said at the beginning of this thread that you have to take "thoughts," "emotional feelings," and other factors into account, not just orgasms and such. So, going by that, I think very few people would be exclusively heterosexual or homosexual. Just how I took it.

Yay!!! Furburger!!! That's by far the best, most endearing one I've ever heard. It makes it sound all innocent, yet savory. Like your favorite fuzzy pet, or a tasty hamburger.

Most definitely a 6, although I used to fit into 3 (i.e. thought I was maybe bi).
okcupid testresults:
"You scored -10 (-52 being completely gay, 0 being bisexual, and 52 being completely straight)
For the most part, you are bisexual. You have a slight preference for the same gender, but either gender would suit you. If you are sexually inexperienced, it is possible that this will change after you do some experimenting."
huh? I think I might have to adjust my self-image ;) I expected something like 0-10. Hmmm... :D

I scored at 25 on the test- Mostly straight, but partial to bi?? WTF I don't think so. On the original question, I was going to answer1 or maybe a 1.5 if we are talking fantasies not realities-so I really don't get the 25-
Oh well- I love taking tests :wavey:

Mostly Straight
You scored 30 (-52 being completely gay, 0 being bisexual, and 52 being completely straight)

:distress:
I took this test, and scored a negative 31. I didn't like having to admit that I enjoyed the opposite sex at one time....thankfully those days are long gone. ;)

By the way, on this scale I think I would be a 7 ... maybe 8. :D
I saw it when it was playing at the arthouse theaters and a couple of old biddies walked out when they showed the giant images of penetration during one of the classroom scenes. Priceless. Reminded of when I went to see The Hours and two women walked out when Nicole Kidman kissed Miranda Richardson, saying "Why did you pick this movie?"

I have a lot of that Logo stuff set up on TiVo. At this point, beggars can't be choosers when it comes to a gay network. I'll take the scraps and love 'em.

despite the results to this quack okcupid test, i'm going to have to go ahead and keep considering myself to be straight.

Pffffft. I wasn't begging. If the gay network sucks, there's no point to it, dear. I already have Torch Song Trilogy and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert on DVD, and I'm not missing much when it comes to ****ty Erasure videos, Flawless with a constipated-looking DeNiro, and Brooke Shields sticking her tongue down a bull dyke's throat at the GLAAD awards for the eight millionth time.
