View Full Version : CDs without one bad track

I was glancing at my 400+ CDs earlier this evening and thinking how incredibly rare it is that I like every single song on a CD. Even in the case of some of my favorite singers, I can't say that I like every song on their albums. There's almost always at least one that either does nothing for me or just sucks. Some of the singers whose CDs have all great tracks in my book still aren't my all-time favorite singers, either.

These are the only CDs I have that have no unlikable tracks to me:

Lindsey Buckingham- Out of the Cradle (this is the only FM-related CD I have with all solid tracks, IMO)
No Doubt- Tragic Kingdom
Sara Evans- Born to Fly
Reba McEntire- Rumor Has It
Cyndi Thomson- My World
Celine Dion- Unison (pop perfection  )
Shakira- MTV Unplugged
Big Daddy- The Best of
Big Daddy- Sgt. Pepper's
Kim Richey- Kim Richey
Kim Richey- Rise
Terri Clark- Terri Clark
Norah Jones- Come Away with Me

That seems to be it. It strikes me as odd that that list doesn't even represent some of my very favorite artists.

So what about y'all?

First off - I like Terry Clark - I used to work at a Country Music station - and I dug her - our production manager SWORE that she's a lesbian - do you know if that is true?

--------

Okay - here are some cds on which I like every track (these are the ones that come to mind):

Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing
Alanis Morisette- Jagged Little Pill
Meredith Brooks - Blurring the Edges
Sheryl Crow, Tuesday Night Music Club, C'mon C'mon, The Globe Sessions
Loretta Lynn-Van Lear Rose
Matchbox 20 - Mad Season
Cyndi Lauper - 12 Deadly Cyns

First off - I like Terry Clark - I used to work at a Country Music station - and I dug her - our production manager SWORE that she's a lesbian - do you know if that is true?I love her voice and when she does the traditional country sound. Her first album is the only one that I really love. Anyway, I know she has something of a lesbian following, but I have never heard that she's gay herself! Ah, that would be lovely.

LOL - well the woman who told me that is a hard-core lesbian herself - and she claims that Terri is a lesbian but can't really come out in the "country music world"

So to back this claim, Lori (that was the lesbian manager's name) said that at a Terri show, Lori got to go meet her backstage (she got to do that with all the country acts) and anyway - as she was leaving she said Terri leaned over to hug her and whispered in her ear, "Great earring, wish I could wear one" - Lori was wearing a rainbow earring.

Don't know if that's true or not....

K.D. Lang is a lesbian isn't she? You could come out in the country music world if you really wanted to.

Crawling Back To You<3<3<3 I nearly died when he played that one at the concert a few days ago.
I'm so bummed I didn't get to go. First, I couldn't find a sitter, and even if I did, he was rained out. Maybe he will make a rain date that I can find a sitter for.

K.D. Lang is a lesbian isn't she? You could come out in the country music world if you really wanted to.I agree.

Deanna, that story is fascinating! I had never heard that about her before! I think she could come out, but I'm well aware that a lot of people I know who love country music would not approve of that at all. But, in my experiences, people don't stop listening to the music for that reason or others like that. Country fans seem to be loyal enough so that if they like the music that's all that matters.

Nelly Furtado - Whoa, Nelly!I just don't like "Baby Girl." But I do love most of that album. She's wonderful! I prefer her debut to Folklore, I have to say.

I own about 400 cds, but a great deal of them are greatest hits/best of/anthology collections and don't really count.

I just took a quick look at them and these are the only non compilations that I could come up with:

Okay, the predictable choices to start with:

Walter Egan: Walternative (If you couldn't tell by the name of my website, I am so in love with this album)
Lindsey Buckingham: Out of the Cradle (I actually prefer the Go Insane album to OOTC, but "Play in the Rain" eliminates it from being eligible for the list)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Southern Accents
Warren Zevon: The Wind
John Stewart: Wires from the Bunker
The Malibooz: Beach Access
And an honorable mention to: Fleetwood Mac: Bare Trees (If only "Thoughts on a Gray Day" wasn't on it. But hey, it's not actually a song so does it count?)

Some possibly unexpected choices:
Stabbing Westward: Wither, Blister, Burn and Peel
Moby: Play
Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts: Bastard Life or Clarity

No she does not - but I submit no one really could. I have heard nothing more on the rumors though. But -http://www.broadway.com/gen/Buzz_Story.aspx?ci=511073 - is still reporting

Patti LuPone Will Make Broadway Musical Return as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd

Broadway.com has learned that Tony Award winner Patti LuPone is expected to headline the upcoming Broadway revival of the Stephen Sondheim/Hugh Wheeler musical Sweeney Todd. The show is aiming for a November 3 opening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Also reported on Broadway.com is that the cast will include Michael Cerveris, Mark Jacoby, Benjamin Magnuson and Lauren Molina.

LuPone previously took on the role of Mrs. Lovett in a concert mounting of Sweeney Todd that was first produced by the New York Philharmonic and was later presented by the San Francisco Symphony and Ravinia Festival in Illinois. The show was broadcast on PBS and is available on DVD. The past for summers she has performed in Sondheim musicals at the Ravinia Festival. In addition to Sweeney Todd, she has appeared there in A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George and Passion. She is scheduled to appear in the composer's Anyone Can Whistle at the Festival on August 26, 2005. LuPone also recently participated in the Children and Art concert at the New Amsterdam Theatre, which was held as a tribute to Sondheim on the eve of his 75th birthday. At the event she sang Sweeney Todd's "A Little Priest" with George Hearn (who appeared opposite LuPone in the aforementioned concert mountings of the musical).

Feels Like Home - Linda Ronstadt

Have you heard her duet album Western Wall that she did with Emmylou a few years back? I've been listening to that for the past few nights in bed as I go to sleep. It's a great album.

I LOVE you for that. Did I ever tell you I partied with her last August. I also have some clips from the concert she did. She was a VERY nice lady and I truly enjoyed meeting her.

I thought she was hot (looks only) when I was in high school.

She is still very very pretty. She also is in her 40's. I thought she was hot when I met her. But, to each their own

I ****ing love that song like you wouldn't believe.

I love that whole album. My boyfriend hates it, but he mostly just likes "pretty" singers. His favorite is Johnny Mathis. But, I need a little personality in my singers.

Hejira really is my favorite. I almost added Blue, but I usually skip over a song or two on that one.

I've never been able to get into For the Roses or the first Rickie Lee Jones album. On FTR, she's still singing in that eardrum-splitting soprano I can't stand. :sorry: Sometimes I wish she'd started smoking when she was 8. :p

I'd rather hear her on Hejira or Turbulent Indigo.

I've heard it. I really like it...those two were made to sing together. I hear Dolly Parton doesn't like either one of them.

Maybe it has to do with them being the standouts on the Trio albums. I heard the same thing, though. They recorded the second Trio album almost ten years before it was released, so there might be some truth to it. Western Wall is fantastic, though. It wasn't the kind of album you would expect from the two of them.

oh gosh - I love this CD. "There Goes the Boy" is my fav. I heard she quit the music world though. :(It's wonderful! When I first got it, it was the only thing I played for a long time. I can't pick a fave track but "There Goes the Boy" is one of the best, I think. I really love "Hope You're Doing Fine," too. Every once in awhile there's a good modern country record!

Anyway, yeah, she did quit the music business to have a baby and be a full-time mother and wife, which is understandable. So, I think that's the only CD we'll ever get from her.

On Flaming Red, I've never been a big fan of "One Big Love," "Tony," or "Wiggley Fingers," whereas I love every single song on Living With Ghosts, which was my first Patty record.

I think I've actually liked each of her subsequent albums less than the previous. I mean, I still love them- I just don't think anything's gotten to me the way Ghosts did.

Hejira and Blue are the two "biggies" for me. Turbulent Indigo is awesome, but there are a couple of weak tracks ("Yvette In English", "Borderline")- but "Magadelene Laundries" almost compensates for them.

It's funny- there are two Joni camps just like there are two Stevie camps, early voice/later voice. I'm in both camps for both artists. For The Roses is so awesome because of the lyric content. Nothing works better for songwriting than getting dumped, having a nervous breakdown and withdrawing from society.

I'm not a fan of Trio II, to be honest. It's pretty weak and Dolly seems bored. I'd love another Emmylou/Linda album if they can create one that's as good as Western Wall. Can't wait for Emmylou's new album, I've read that she's been doing sessions for it and it's supposed to be even more left-field than her last three.

I just realized I have way too many greatist hits comps. Since they don't count, here's what I came up with:

Stevie - Bella Donna
Mac - Rumours
GnR - Appetite for Destruction
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
Melissa Etheridge - Yes I Am
Dixie Chicks - Home (F you, jerks)
