Hi. Apologies if this has been covered before, but can someone tell me who actually played on the 4 new songs from The Chain set?

Welcome to the Ledge. :)
I believe the lineup for each is as follows....
"Paper Doll" (basic tracks recorded in 1988 -- originally intended for 'Greatest Hits,' but replaced by "No Questions Asked," which Mick preferred): Stevie, Christine, Mick, John, Billy & Rick, with Lindsey's vocals (and perhaps guitar, too) overdubbed onto the song in 1992.
"Heart Of Stone": Christine, Mick, John & Billy, with Stevie's overdubbed backing vocals.
"Love Shines": Christine, Mick, John & Billy.
"Make Me A Mask: Lindsey solo, recorded during the 'Out Of The Cradle' sessions.

*sigh* I'm so in the minority, but I truly love Paper Doll. A classic? No. A fun, upbeat song to sing along with in the car? Absolutely.

What about Goodbye Angel? That wasnt a new song either, but I think it was the first time it was released. And of course Silver Springs was on there...and Teen Beat. As well as the extended-ending version of Gypsy....AND the marching band intro version of Tusk. There were a whole bunch of "new" gems on there.

I always liked Love Shines and Heart of Stone. Especially the latter. It just sounds like a Christine-singing-about-John song.

There's a difference between "new" and "New". :)
"Paper Doll", "Love Shines", "Heart Of Stone", & "Make Me A Mask" were BRAND new...whereas "Goodbye Angel" & "Teen Beat" were "as is" included from the Mirage sessions. "Gypsy" was just the video's mix of the song. "Tusk" was just a remix from the master multi-track recording, as was "Isn't It Midnight". And, even a "lost gem" from the FG/BT era, "Trinity".
Despite all that, overall though, I thought the box set was poorly done.

I definitely would've preferred "Paper Doll" to that atrocity called "No Questions Asked", no matter WHAT state of incompletion the recording was in.

It was also one of the single versions, wan't it? I remember hearing it on a jukebox.

Pittsburgh radio was playing it when it was released as a single (before the boxed-set came out), and I thought it was just great.
Still one of my favorites to this day.

"Gypsy" was just the video's mix of the song. Not quite the exact mix they used for the video, but it is closer to it than the album version.
There are five officially released versions of "Gypsy"... the album version, the 7" mix, the "unedited alternate version" from the boxed-set, the first video mix which MTV used to play and then the second video mix which we hear now instead (when MTV started playing the latter, around 1989, the chyron noted the album as "Mirage/CD" -- although it's not the CD version either, so go figure).

I definitely would've preferred "Paper Doll" to that atrocity called "No Questions Asked", no matter WHAT state of incompletion the recording was in.I love "No Questions Asked," so I don't mind either way... but I suspect the only reason Mick truly preferred "NQA" over "Paper Doll" was the fact that one of the "new boys" co-wrote the latter, and would have a songwriting credit and royalty from the 'Greatest Hits' album right out of the gate.

I think it has to do more with the fact that NQA is obviously about Lindsey.
"You spend lots of time alone/sometimes you spend years" (Who does THAT sound like?!?)
"Well I need you now. Well I'm broken hearted. I broke down like a little girl." (Which I took to be about the events of Aug. 7, 1987.)

I guess I've just always felt the "Stevie Nicks/Rick Vito/John Herron" writing credit on "Paper Doll" had more to do with that decision than anything else.

"Well I need you now. Well I'm broken hearted. I broke down like a little girl." (Which I took to be about the events of Aug. 7, 1987.)
Actually, I always thought this was inspired by the Bob Dylan song "Just like a woman"
"She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl."

Patrick Leonard produced those songs too. I would have loved to have had an entire Fleetwood Mac album with Mick, John, Chris & Billy and produced by Mr. Leonard.

I agree with you. While I'm grateful for the new songs and rarites that were included, the box set could have been much better. As usual, I was slightly dissappointed that there weren't more rarities. And, while the cover image of of John's penguin tattoo was interesting, the lame quotes featured as graphic images on each CD case were a terrible and lazy choice.
This band has never been very literal (reference the vuluminous notes, observations and articles contained in other artists' reissues and compilations -- often written by the artists themselves.). As such, the book contains almost nothing to read and a seemingly random bunch of photos. Information is scant and sometimes inaccurate.
The project wasn't as inspired as it should have been. The songs appear as if they just hit the shuffle button to come up with a sequence. And there's just a passing nod to their blues and middle period eras. They should have made a distinction -- is this going to be a box set dedicated to the Rumours era band? Or, is it going to be a fair representation of their entire history? If so, the song selection should have been more balanced, even if that meant another cd or two.
And what the hell was Stand Back doing there?

Thanks also for the alternate NQA.
Since I started the trhead, I guess I should weigh in that I prefer Paper Doll to NQA.
It's nice to hear Stevie sing an upbeat song - that isn't about someone coming in to a room.

I haven't been exposed to the whole box, just the 2 CD version. It seems from that there are glaring omissions from the 'passing nod' - namely Future Games and Bare Trees.
I'm not really familiar with those albums, but am I right that this was a period when the band was 'lead' by Danny? Is this the same on the full box - this period not represented? Is there a reason other than space for this omssion?
Edit: Put the '[/' before the 2nd QUOTE

Pretty much the whole FG/BT era is ignored...other than an alternate take of Bob Welch's "Lay It All Down" and a previously unreleased Danny Kirwan track "Trinity" (which they used to play in concert in those days, though).
They might as well have just released the white album, Rumours, Tusk, Mirage & the 1971 Greatest Hits together in their entirety and called it a "box set"...there was painfully seemingly little thought more than that involved in the compilation. It would've actually been a better thing to just start the remaster/re-issue project in 1992 and ****canned the idea of a box set.

A theory...but not very feasible, at least in my opinion. If subject matter --however obscured--determined what was and wasn't released, then the entire Rumours album would have never seen the light of day. I think some fans give much more creedence to the internal emotional aspects to the songs than there actually is.
If Stevie wrote a song entitled "Lindsey Is An Asshole," maybe then I could buy into why there would be some reservations.

I think that was Fleetwood/McVie/Spencer/Kirwan/McVie incarnation. Although, they certainly played it live with Bob Welch.

I think the Box Set is relatively good, I definetely love the live version of Stand Back. But you already had that on the commercial video from the Cow Palace shows in 1987. It's the same "Stand Back."
It would have been nice to see 'Hold Me' or 'Seven Wonders' in the Box Set though. :(Yeah, but why? You already had those on the "Mirage" & "Tango" albums, respectively. Why do things need to be on multiple CDs? Do people play four CDs simultaneously around the house?

I agree about "Stand Back." However, it would have been great to hear alternate takes/mixes of "Hold Me" and "Seven Wonders." It would have been even better if they had included the ever elusive live version of "Hold Me."

And if nothing else, they missed a great marketing opportunity for people like myself who are interested in learning more about that "middle period" but can't go straight out and buy those albums on spec. Although it can be hard to decide if you like an album on just 2 or 3 songs, at least you can get a feel for the sound.
Again, I'm coming from having heard the 2 CD version - but I can see the 4 CD isn't a whole lot better, anyway - but you get 1 song from KH plus one rarity from that line up, which suggests to me that I would probably like that album. There is nothing at all from FG & BT, yet with 2 albums that is the most prolific line-up other than the Rumours one. From Penguin and MTM you get one Christine song - I already like Christine so I've learned nothing there. And finally from HAHTF one Christine song and Bob's Bermuda Triangle - which itself doesn't really sell me on the album - or Bob. I know the 4 CD version has a couple more Bob tracks, but the trade off is you lose Ber Tri.
As much as it should have been more of a celebration it could also have been more of a promotion.
(PS: Before anyone suggests I would have been better off buying the albums mentioned on spec than spending money on the 2 CD set I borrowed a copy from a public library for evaluation.)
