View Full Version : Favorite Shows That Pushed The Envelope

What are some of your most beloved TV shows that hit the social taboos hard?
Some of mine include:
All In The Family
Roseanne
To a lesser extent, Murphy Brown
I have never seen Nip/Tuck.
I've seen a few episodes of Sex And The City & didn't really care for it. The brunette was the only one I liked (though I liked SJP in LA Story).
I know Maude will be a popular choice on this board, but I've seen only a couple of episodes.

I'll add that I recently rented all 7 episodes of Fat Actress. I liked all the episodes except for #s 5 and 6, which were terrible.
It's way too soon for me to say it's a favorite.

Fawlty Towers, of course, Kraut's and all.
I've never seen a whole episode. I think they air it here on PBS on Saturdays.
How about "favourite reasons to start a thread"?
How about explaining that one?

The Jeffersons I love!
Three's Company (for it's time it was risque, right?)
Queer As Folk is pretty cool
Sex and the City is great!
Desperate Housewives
I Love Lucy (my favorite show of all time. I can include it in this list because Lucy was pregnant and that was considered pushing the envelope back then)

I almost listed The Jeffersons but didn't think it really fit. But you're right, the whole mixed marriage thing was definitely pushing the envelope at the time.
If I remember, Carol Brady was the first character to say the word pregnant on the air, & she & Mike were the first to share a bed. Lucy & Ricky had two beds pushed together for awhile, I know.

Carol and Mike's inuendo was really pushing the envelope back then, now that you mention it.
And back in the 50's, did couples really sleep in seperate beds? That seems crazy!

That and not being allowed to say pregnant.
I heard these Brady first in an interview with Florence Henderson years ago, so who knows how reliable her claims are.

Most definitely 'Roseanne', that show really aimed to test the limits of network television. And 'Will and Grace', that should count right? Back in the early 90s, I think NBC would have preferred to die then show a sitcom with openly gay characters.

I think Buffy had the first on-screen kiss between a lesbian couple on network TV. It was also the first to show a lesbian sex scene (I'm not sure if it's really a 'sex' scene, though) on network TV.
Didn't Roseanne do one really early on, too? I seem to remember a big hype around it, and some ABC affiliates refused to air the episode. It turned out to be a really big nothing moment. ER also did one fairly early on - back when ER was groundbreaking... I never saw Buffy, though, so I have no time reference of when it was on in relation to Roseanne and ER.. Could have been years before and I'd never have known it. :)

Northern Exposure (at the time, it was pretty ground breaking and envelope pushing)
Six Feet Undahhhhh
Curb Your Enthusiasm (everything Larry does pushes the envelope)
Home Movies (an alcoholic soccer coach? come on now! hilarious!)
Strangers With Candy (a 46 year old highshool drop out and former prostitute and junkie returns to high school to start over again!)
South Park (don't even need to comment)
Chapelle's Show (the African American KKK leader!)
Queer as Folk (British Series - WAY better writing and far superior characters)
Arrested Development (everything about this show pushes the envelope!)

Sigh... My So-Called Life. I think that is my all time favorite show. The writing in that show, the characters are so complex and unique. Each character is different in their thinking and approach to life. I have it on DVD. Perhaps it's time to drag it off the shelf for the 20th time! Swoon.
Yeah, and Roseanne is a great show too. I think it's coming out on DVD soon.

Golden Girls tackled some issues on their show. Remember Dorothy's lesbian friend who came to stay with them. She fell in love with Rose. For the time, that was really ground breaking material. It's tame by today's standards, but that was some risky stuff for a popular sitcom to address.

Chilid mentioned mine...Twin Peaks. The character that the series was based on, Laura Palmer, was murdered by her father who was possessed by the demon(?), BOB. Well, there are a trazillion interpretations of BOB and her father, Leland. Also, she was pretty whore-y because of it, and worked as a prostitute in Canada. Her father molested her, it's just crazy. There is more craziness, but yeah, TP pushed the envelope.

I missed it when it was on network TV in the 90's, but caught up with the whole series when it was on the "N" channel last year.
Isn't about time for a "reunion show" or something?

There were some portions of the series that were unnecessarily violent that were sort of a turn off but other than that, the relationships between everyone and Tony's own inner issues were what kept me tuning in. There are a lot of NJ Italians offended by the show (so much so that they wanted it taken off of the air). I don't find it offensive in that way -- it's not portraying the normal Italian family (if there are any normal Italian families  ) -- it's a bunch of mobsters.

I meant if The L-Word is a version of Sex & The City.

I really wish they'd reair My So-Called Life -- the cast was out of this world, the acting amazing and the storylines well written.
They just re-aired My So-Called Life here on the Family channel - every night at 11:30pm... they aired it without commercials. I loved this show SO much the first time around - I couldn't understand why it got cancelled. I loved Rayanne and Ricky the most. I wanted to BE Rayanne!
Another show I loved but that didn't last long - and sorta pushed the envelope - was Once and Again. That show with the impossibly beautful Sela Ward and Billy Campbell - only lasted 2 esasons I tihnk. Where I thought they were especially brilliant and did something no other series had done was in their portrayal of anorexia. Evan Rachel Wood was absolutely brilliant, and it was the most realistic portrayal of it I've ever seen. I loved this show so much - made me bawl. :o Their portrayal of divorce and stepfamilies was also very realistic.

And the thing is, Marie can do some downright Horrible things, but I dont think her OR Frank are horrible people at all. The biggest complaint about the show is that the characters arent likeable. The holy grail of Canadian TV. Started as The Kids of Degrassi Street - and went on for eons through Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High, the kids of Degrassi, and Degrassi: the Next Generation. Did I miss one? seriously, it's been around for almost 20 years, I think...
They tackled everything from abortion, to single mom-hood, drugs, sex, etc etc etc. Everything kids go through, they did it. No candy-coating. Right in your face. Hugely popular. It's seen in the States, too, I believe... though I couldn't tell you where...

I actually went to see Thirteen in the theatres when it came out - and I NEVER go to see movies. Went to see it because it looked really good - and because she was in it. She really is remarkable for someone her age. Found the movie a leeettle bit fightening, I have to say... I sure wasn't do that kind of stuff at 13!!
No, it was a very disturbing movie. The girl who wrote it pulled from her own life. Unlike us, she was into that stuff at 13. The whole scene with the two of them huffing and then slapping the **** out of each other .... good grief  I think she's written two other films since Thirteen and she's not even out of high school. She's come a long way from her inner-city days.

Kids in the hall is extremely funny at times, most times. DeGrassi Jr. High was good. I remember thinking: "ohmigosh!" when I watched it, because kids in my Jr. High school were not like that at all. They didn't have those problems, and they didn't dress like that, really. Their hair wasn't so much like that, either.

Golden Girls tackled some issues on their show. Remember Dorothy's lesbian friend who came to stay with them. She fell in love with Rose. For the time, that was really ground breaking material. It's tame by today's standards, but that was some risky stuff for a popular sitcom to address.
Golden Girls was pretty groundbreaking by standards of the 80s, or so I'm told.... it's not every day you watch old women sit around chowing down on cheesecake and talking about their sex lives.
I remember they did an episode on suicide too, when a friend of Sophia's wanted to take pills and kill herself. That was probably pretty eye-popping for Saturday night prime-time.
It's seen in the States, too, I believe... though I couldn't tell you where...
They've actually got a sort of "revival" of the original Degrassi on the air now, called "Degrassi: The Next Generation". It's basically same stories, but for a new generation of kids. Spike, Snake and Joey are all still on, but this time they're the adults, lol.

Doh! Pretty important omission on my part. Oops. It was actually an afterschool-type show for kids. I'd say the target audience was... 10-15 years old maybe? But it developed a massive following, and kids who watched when they were 10 or 11 were still watching into their 20s. I never did watch it, but my sister did - and she was obsessed. (I bet she STILL watches it! She's in her early 30s).
