Pope disapproves of Harry Potter, letters suggest (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=peopleNews&storyID=2005-07-13T195712Z_01_N13662764_RTRIDST_0_PEOPLE-POPE-HARRYPOTTER-DC.XML)
BERLIN (Reuters) - Pope Benedict believes the Harry Potter books subtly seduce young readers and "distort Christianity in the soul" before it can develop properly, according to comments attributed to him by a German writer.
Gabriele Kuby, who has written a book called "Harry Potter - Good or Evil," which attacks J.K. Rowling's best selling series about the boy wizard, published extracts from two letters written to her by Benedict in 2003, when he was a cardinal.
Kuby, a devout Catholic, had sent him a copy of her Potter critique and he wrote to thank her, according to a passage from one of the letters published in German on her Web site.
"It is good that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because these are subtle seductions which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly," Benedict wrote, according to the excerpt.
A Vatican official was not immediately able to comment on the remarks attributed to Benedict, who is currently on holiday in the Alps. Reuters was unable to reach Kuby by telephone.
The sixth book in the series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," is due to be published on July 16, with millions of copies already shipped to stores around the world.
After Benedict was named Pope in April, his own writings shot to the top of the German book charts and dislodged the most recent book in the Potter series from number one.
The Vatican had previously appeared to approve of the books, saying they helped children to understand the difference between good and evil.
Kuby maintains the opposite, listing among 10 arguments against Harry Potter: "The ability of the reader to distinguish between good and evil is overridden by emotional manipulation and intellectual obfuscation."
In one of the letters, Benedict gives Kuby permission to publicise his opinion.
"Somehow your letter got buried in the large pile of name-day, birthday and Easter mail," he writes.
"Finally this pile is taken care of, so that I can gladly allow you to refer to my judgment about Harry Potter."
Vatican officials earlier this year condemned Dan Brown's Catholic conspiracy bestseller "The Da Vinci Code."
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone in March blasted the book as an absurd distortion of history, saying it was full of cheap lies and Catholic bookstores should take it off their shelves.

But seriously, what's so bad about Harry Potter? It's not like I'm going to go out and start trying to learn black magic or something.

Speaking of popularity contests...

Have no doubt about it - the main reason that those fundamental religious groups (or at least their leaders) disapprove of the Harry Potter books is that they are more popular with children than any outmoded Church's ailing arm of influence could ever hope to be in this day and age. (No offence to anyone here - but then I'd surprised if there's anybody on a Fleetwood Mac dicsussion board whose religious group has a problem with pretend witches. )

The Pope doesn't really think that these celebs or the characters they portray are evil. He's just worried that they are (to varying extents) more popular than certain other (religious) celebs/characters.

Good call!!!
I can just picture the Pope frowning because he can't be number one anymore, lol...

Yeah well let the Catholic church start working on its reputation as a valid, moral entity. I don't anymore trust a Catholic priest than a bear *****s in a toilet. The people within THAT organization are doing much more harm than a Harry Potter book would ever do to a child's imagination.

This is just my perception of the Catholic Church as an entity, and not only the Catholic Church! I'm unbiased in my loathe for most organized religion in this country. =) *wink*

Well, most religions believe theirs is the 'best'. I am Catholic, and no one I know thinks *only* Catholics are valid Christians. I personally believe that everyone who believes in God is equal...yes, including Jews. (Equal in the eyes of God....I don't mean equal in the 'universe', or better than those who don't believe...I don't mean to offend non-believers.) I can't imagine someone leading a good, helpful, responsible life and being turned away by *my* God at Heaven's Gate because of a 'technicality'. Most people are Christian/Jew/Muslim/Buddhist/whatever.. because their parents were. Those beliefs were instilled from birth, and we all think we are right. I hope not to offend anyone as well. It's just that I had a recent experience with a part time Prodestant preacher who really thought he was reigning himself in when he was *subtly* condemning my religion to me. I just let him.
As far as Harry Potter....my kids have all the books and movies that have been released...and plan to be in line at midnight tomorrow...
PLUS I vote Democrat.

do you feel in your heart that you are right about that? I am not a practicing Christian...I dont go to church, I lead a selfish life...I drink, I swear, etc. I honestly dont believe that just because I'm "good" and "helpful" that is going to get me into Heaven. My conscience wont let me believe that. Call that condemnation, or whatever it may be. I think you know whether you're getting into heaven or not. It's not like you get there and its a surprise or God gives you a 2nd chance. At least, thats how I feel about it.

There actually WAS a book burning (of Harry Potter) in my home state a few years back!!! And it wasn't the Catholics - it was some other fundy Christian group.
Ugh - I hate that the Pope has to issue a damn opinion on things - who the hell listens? I guess really devout Catholics? The Pope doesn't even have a place in my life - he's a man plain and simple and I don't give a rat's ass (that one's for you Miss Vicky ;) about what he thinks...

What is this Nazi Germany?! Book burning? Good Lord. You know, if you dont like something...dont buy it. Dont let your kids read it. But you dont have to go out and take someone's life work (a novel) and burn it because you think it's evil.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you believe in God, but you think you won't get into Heaven? That would be terrifying for me. If someone doesn't believe, that's a different story...why would they care about Heaven? I would hope that anyone who is a believer would want to enter Heaven. (Although many will likely be shocked to see others there with them!)

Since when is it the Vatican's job to critique children's books?
What angers me most about this is that it seems the popester just assumes that anyone reading these books is Catholic (or Christian). It's like he completely discounts all possibilities that there are other religions, legitimate religions, and beliefs in the world. Also, that children are too stupid to differentiate between fiction and fact.

I believe he has stated that he really doesn't think other religions are valid. I'm not fond of this Pope's beliefs. It is preposterous to believe that these books are going to confuse kids about their Christianity, if they are Christian. One has nothing to do with the other.

Well since we all "know" one another here...I'll tell ya what I think. I believe Jesus Christ is Lord. I was raised in a non denominational church growing up. Really, it was a southern baptist church without the "label." Now, as an adult you change your mind about things and your mind broadens beyond the finite-teachings of your youth. I've struggled with it for years because of what happened with my parents divorce (remember the betrayal thread?)...but I still believe what I always have, and in my own heart, I feel it to be true. Now...in the past few years I have been a terrible example of Christianity. I drink, I smoked, lusted after women (& men), I've done drugs, premarital sex...swearing...the whole nine yards. I havent graced the door of a church in 6 years. Nor will I. I refuse to. Does that make me a bad person? Yeah, probably. Does that mean I will or wont get in heaven because I did bad things? Possibly. I'm certainly not living by the standards of the Bible in any case, but I do believe that Christ is "the" Christ. So is that enough to get me into the pearly gates? None of us truly know...and in my own heart I don't think it is.
I realize that was probably TMI...

No, no hon, I was not offended either. But can you live with that fact? It sounds like you cutting off your nose to spite your face. (Maybe that belongs in the 'expressions' thread..) If you don't think you'll get into Heaven, and you *believe* in Heaven....aren't you scared of the alternative? You have absolutely every right to feel abandoned and betrayed by people you trusted the most. You *at the very least* deserve an acknowledgement of that...one that is not followed by "but....". I don't think you should continue punishing yourself because of the actions of others. I'm sorry if this is out of line.
Everything that you think will keep you out of heaven...I have done at some point in my life. (sheesh....well, again....as long as we all *know* one another here....) I do believe I am a good person, I try to repent and do better, but still I am a sinner. I am not so frightened of my God that I'm afraid to say so at the pearly gates. I don't commit hate crimes, I try VERY hard to be understanding of all God's people according to what I *personally* feel is right...not according to society or even necessarily church deems. I am not proud of everything I have done...but I am very proud of some things. I'm not perfect, and I don't think God will expect me to be...just the best I am able to be.
I'm sorry for all your confusion. Nobody should have to deal with that. Someone should have recognized how that would mess up your head....and religious feelings. I am a firm believer that you can learn from every single thing that happens to you. I know I've said this before, but as I tell my kids....maybe the only thing you'll learn is that you will never ever make another person feel the way this person/situation made you feel. That is still a valuable lesson and will make you a better person. I obviously can't say with absolutely certainty that I *know* whether you or I will enter Heaven. I do desire to be there, and believe I shall be. I certainly hope you will be as well, and I hope you can believe the same. I think you should fix whatever issues you have that give you doubts. You need some closure and put the other incident in the past. At least as far as you can. Of course, that's just my opinion. Fwiw.
Kelly :)
PS: This post was MUCH more clear the FIRST time I typed it. I got up, got sidetracked, and when I came back, it was gone. curses! Sorry for the second rate summary that might not be as clear as I'd have hoped.

Possibly. Now, my friend, don't buy into other people's notions of what being a "good person" is.
Smoking, drinking, having sex... none of that automatically makes you a bad person. Yeah, they're "vices" and they can sometimes take over our lives and keep us from moving forward... but they don't disqualify us from being good people.
How do you treat people? Are you generous and compassionate, or do you always put yourself ahead and think only of what you can gain from situations? If it's the latter, then, yeah, that's something to work on. And how about those vices? Are you hurting anyone else when you engage in that behaviour? Or just yourself from a health standpoint?
Everyone goes through a "hedonistic" period... it's how we learn and grow. Some people get trapped there though.
The trick is to make it work for you, and to let it be a learning experience.
In my book, a "good person" is characterized by how they treat others. We ALL have our vices, but those vices certainly don't make us "bad people." Just human.

I agree, and disagree. Maybe thats my problem Johnny Stew. Growing up in the 'fear of the Lord' and living in constant condemnation have done it to me! =) Anyway...I figure it some ways it possibly kept me from bad things that could've happened to me. I look back, and regret not being more sexually promiscuous. That's a weird thing to admit, but I could have gotten several girls that I just overlooked. I did not get the new Harry Potter book because I never can concentrate on these books specifically, don't know why.
Anyway I like watching the news and seeing the people go mad.

 Ok - I just got into a slight argument with this dude at work who keeps saying how much the new book sucks....and he likes the movies only...
Catch? HE'S NEVER READ THE BOOKS.
Erg...so just don't be a movie jerk professing that the movies are so much better - IMO you can't judge that unless you've actually experienced both. [/rant]
Now I know that's totally not what you're doing - it just brought up bad memories of my earlier conversation.

I read the first 2 Harry Potter books before I saw the movies and I thought they were very similar. I can't say one is better than the other because its two total different experiences. I like both.

yes - the first two movies jive very well with the books - as a book fan the third movie has been the weakest - I'm still really bitter about some of the liberties the director took and with some of the things he left out  I do still enjoy the movie though - I think of them seperately as well- and like both - but I do enjoy the books a great deal more than the movies :D

I agree. I love fantasy and fiction stuff...but I read the first two Potter's and wasnt that impressed. I wasn't engrossed in the story...it just wasnt enough depth for me. I prefer the more wordy Tolkien-esque style. I also enjoy the Chronicles of Narnia more.

I haven't, either. I've heard nothing but good things, though. :)
