I love The Reflex by Duran Duran!
Why? That Warbling part of "Whyyyyyyyyy don't you use it" makes the cats in the neighborhood hiss and run up a tree....The dogs whine and run incircles.....I know when they do that, either a hurricane/earthquake is coming, or that song is on somewhere! Only thing worse is maybe Yoko Ono. *shiver* :)

Omg. HAHAHA.
That song SO brings back New Years Eve. My friend and I were talking on AIM, and we were both a little tipsy (she moreso than me), and we both played that song and did drunken dancing to it. It always makes me giggle when I hear that song. Ah, memories. <3

The video is even worse! I can't stand to watch Jessica Simpson sing...listening to her is O...K...but watching her...ugh. And did you know she thought the song was originally by Loretta Lynn?!?!? Omg...she said that because, she had a LL album when she was younger, and she had remade the song...but I mean, everyone knows These Boots Are Made For Walking is Nancy Sinatra!! C'mon!
I hate the majority of all rap songs. Most of today's stuff disgusts me. If it's not the lyrics, it's the music itself...and the way people present themselves today is like eww.
As for older stuff...I hate all things by The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Queen. Also...most songs by ZZ Top.

I'll consider watching a live performance of The Doors...but you see, I can't stand either one of these bands lead singer's voices! That is what really turns me off. But I have to admit...I can't think of one thing I like about Queen...the voice..the music...the lyrics!! I mean who writes a song about bycicles!?!?!? Even if Stevie sung it I wouldn't like it! lol. I wish I could take you up on the Dvd of Queen...but I was being dead serious when I said I hate them. When a song of there's comes on the radio...I turn it before I self puncture my eardrums.

*I cannot stand that awful, sickening, stupid, annoying, childish and freakishly popular "Barbie Girl" song. I don't know who sings it, but they should be shot. Twice.
*The Walrus/Egg Man song by the Beatles. When it hits the radio, I prey for an alien abduction.
*Anything by the members of They Might Be Giants. http://www.geocities.com/virgolibrapisces/giftard.gif
*We Built This City On Rock & Roll. Oh come on! This one is so ridiculous! What an embarassing thing to have on your musical resume!
*Don't know who sings it....some country tune about a little girl who's dying...? Her mama wants to know who'll hold her little girl's hand when she crosses the streets of heaven.
Anything with vocals my Mark Knopfler. The man is talented, but his voice....just drives me nuts, like nails on a chalkboard.
Anything by Ms. Spears, the Simpson girls, or any other tart who falls into the same genre of music.
Last one I can think of right now....Werewolves of London.

Thank you! Frampton should definitely be on my list. You can throw the Eagles in there too. :woohoo:
I love a lot of bands from the 70's though.
Fleetwood Mac (obviously)
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Aerosmith
AC/DC with Bon Scott
etc........
John and Yoko's "I'm Your Angel"
Hil, sweety, let's not tarnish John's good name by associating him with that piece of crap. He had nothing to do with that. All Yoko. He just whistled on it (and may have played guitar/piano) but we can forgive him for that, since he probably felt some spousal obligation there. All in all, it's her ridiculous attempt to create a "new wave" version of Making Whoopee and we can all laugh...at her, not John.
Let's see... songs I hate:
I can't really dedicate myself to a list, but I will say that I found Lionel Richie's Essential Colection (yeah... my a$$) in some discount bin and bought it in hopes of rekindling the lame sparks of my youth. Well, his essential songs suck (except for three) and I had to endure wrathful comments and pitying looks from friends after I bought it, only to find out that was a good $3.99 of my well-earned money gone to waste. :distress:
I don't really listen to the radio frequently, but on those contemporary pop stations they play music by some guy named "Uncle Cracker"...and it's bad music. Very bad. I do not like Uncle Cracker.
Good gawd, anything by the Eagles. I HATE THE F*CKING EAGLES
Hello/Goodbye, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, When I'm 64, Get Back, The Long & Winding Road, and [insert name of mostly Paul-penned mawkish tune] by the Beatles.
Loads of others...I'm just too tired to think of any more right now, which is good for everyone else I am sure. :)

apparently you were born LATER, and didnt have to suffer thru the late 50's early 60's music, so you dont appreciate the good old time rock and roll offered by Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc...believe me, they are classics. the fact that contemporary artists are still trying to "cover" them tells me there are plenty of fans still out there....

How can anyone hate Queen or Phil Collins? They are on my daily sountracks. I can't go a day WITHOUT listening to them.
ABBA are great. They are so easy to listen to, I don't get hating them either, but to each their own.
I ALSO hate Jessica Simpson's "These Boots.." it's horrible.
I also hate "Don't Phunk with my Heart"...very annoying and repetative.
I love "We Built This City..." it's the song that plays whenever I get a text message on my phone. It just reminds of my childhood, seeing that video on MTV.
I HATE Changes by David Bowie.
Barbie Girl by Aqua
Summer Girls by LFO ( and I will just say this..anything else that they did I hated too I am sure)
Macarena-never liked it one second
ANYTHING by Creed
Don't Stop by FM...I don't like it either LOL
Most Britney Spears songs
Most N Sync songs
Dream On-Aerosmith
Most Talking Heads songs ( I don't know why but they grate on me)
Most Van Halen songs
Most Doors songs
I could go on and on. I love music but these are the songs I would pass on the radio.

I also hate the song Everywhere (by FM obviously). Seriously, it sounds like elevator music. I dont know why it was a single. Isn't It Midnight should have been the hit single instead. Oh Diane is a pretty awful song too. But not nearly a bad as Only Over You. That song makes me gag.

Hello - Lionel Richie (can't get that stupid video out of my head when I hear it)
Black or White - Michael Jackson
I Believe I Can Fly - R. Kelly
Don't Stop - Mac
Lights - Journey (and I LOVE me some Journey, but I can't stand this tune)
Nirvana - Come as You Are
Can't think of any more right now. I must agree, that new Jessica Simpson "Boots" cover is atrocious. Painful to hear. And I always thought she was OK, very pretty girl, decent role model. Have you seen the video for this song? WTF? Somehow, sometime, somewhere she became a gigantic hooch. She looks like a ho-ah. :(Those are both awful. Oh, I must see this slutty Jessica Simpson video. I can only imagine.

I never listened to Stryper, but I liked a song by Michael Sweet he did a few years ago. Wish I could remember the dang name of it. Michael is the best looking in that bunch, IMO.
Christian rock. I like some of it. It depends on who it is. My fave in the rock category would be Nouveaux, even though they only made one rock-ish album and their second album was very stripped down acoustic. Both are terrific, though.

This one I'd have to disagree with, mainly because Duran Duran is my second favorite band, lol :D "The Reflex" is just pure cheesy 80s fun, which is what's so great about it.
I love The Reflex. But what the hell are they singing about? They freaking rock live.

Hello - Lionel Richie (can't get that stupid video out of my head when I hear it)
Black or White - Michael Jackson
I Believe I Can Fly - R. Kelly
Don't Stop - Mac
Lights - Journey (and I LOVE me some Journey, but I can't stand this tune)
Nirvana - Come as You Are

We don't really get Christian rock in the UK. When I think about Christian rock I think either Stryper or that movie Saved.

I think I'm one of the few who actually likes Everywhere and Isn't It Midnight, not so much.
And why does everyone hate grunge so much! The grunge-era was great! My favourites from that time Sonic Youth - Dirty, Pearl Jam - Vs, Nirvana - In Utero, Soundgarden - Louder Than Love, Hole - Pretty On The Inside, Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion, Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen and Dinosaur Jr - Where You Been...
Ah good memories...
Most of those albums will be among my faves until eternity.

I just don't. It all sounded dark, and the same, and whiny, and beatless to me. There are a few exceptions. Sonic Youth was ok. Also, no one really did anything interesting with their instruments. It's like, the same five notes, and the same boring beat, and the same screaming, lifeless vocal. Sorry, Trackie. If PJ Harvey can be considered in there, I like her. Don't worry we can't all like the same things :) although not all of it is three-chord punk I-Hate-Myself-And-Want-To-Die stuff. For example, Afghan Whigs were really soulful, they were hugely influenced by old Motown records and Prince, and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr is still an incredible guitarist, and unlike a lot of grunge artists always loved doing really, long spine-tingling solos.

I can't stand that stupid U2 song where Bono starts off by saying "Uno, dos, tres, catorce."
I dropped out of Spanish class but I still know that catorce means FOURTEEN and it annoys the sh*t out of me everytime I hear it.
Other songs I can't stand (off the top of my head):
"Landslide" (in any form - but most especially as performed by the Dixie B*tches)
"Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani
"How Sweet It Is" by James Taylor (Pure sap! As far as I'm concerned, only one man can get away with singing sappy songs and not totally nauseate me... and I'm sure you can guess who that is :) )
"Go Your Own Way" as performed by Wilson Phillips. (OMFG they totally raped that song of everything that made it great.)
"Pinball Wizard" by The Who (I think, anyways)
"Levon" by Elton John (something about the way he pronounces "garage" just irritates me)
That's all for now...

I'm certainly not going to argue with you about James Taylor's voice or Lionel Ritchie (for the record "All Night Long" is the ONLY Ritchie song I like or can even tolerate). We can at least agree on that much.
Phil Collins always came across to me as being more silly than sappy. Anyway, one of the first albums (the second one, to be exact) I ever owned was Genesis' "We Can't Dance." I think I was like 11 when that came out. I pretty much grew up on Phil/Genesis so I guess it's kind of a sentimental attachment.

I'm not knocking it - Genesis was huge when I was in high school, and I liked the That's All song/video when it came out, before it was played to death and through the grave. But since then, for me, too many of Phil's songs sound like the slowest and most repetitious of Christine McVie's - Only Over You, One More Lonely Night, etc. Phil's One More Night (and other hits) fit right in with this style. Don't get me wrong, I like Chris, and I even like her songs that I listed, but I guess I feel more variety in her music, and I like her voice more, if you follow.

In all seriousness, and I mean no insult, would somebody please explain the whole Gwen Stefani fascination? She's nice looking & half naked (like half the women on the charts these days). She can sing okay from what I've heard (and I know only what I've heard here & there) but her lyrics don't seem too deep. She has some seriously noticeable lips, but otherwise I wouldn't pick her out of a pop lineup. Please tell me why she's seen as so special that she's all over the place all the time. (Again, I'm not asking anybody to defend, just to explain.)

I can honestly say that I never liked any MJ song. Don't like the music, hate his voice & his "hah"-squeaks. His Jackson Five vocals were fine, it's his solo stuff that I never liked, even when he was the hottest thing going. I did like the Leave Me Alone video, but that's really it.

1.Weeelll, if you're a lyrics person, her lyrics are deep like Stevie's in a 90's way - ie, they sound shallow, but are actually really deep. You'd have to catch up on the whole back catalogue. She says unusual, light things, that actually have way more meaning. She turns a quick phrase, if you will.
2.She's a really good, energetic, live performer
3.She has Charisma in her videos, and live, to last until the next century.
4.She has a good voice, she sings well, and her band is good, too. Her voice is unusual and distinctive, mannered, yet masterful.
5. She picks great people to work with, I think she did her solo with Jimmy Iovine? and she picks great other talent to work with. Even with rote songs, something about the sound/or production, or an unusual and awesome "guest voice" or anything, will be somewhat unusual. Eve.
6. She is really, really, really charismatic in most of her videos.
7. She has unusual fashion sense, and used to make many of her clothes herself. I encourage you to watch the "trapped in a box" and "spiderwebs" videos. Actually, I ecourage you to watch all of the bands, and her solo, videos.
8. She's hawt, which is, thankfully, the very least of her talents.

I think she's very confident in her eyes when she sings, but I can't get into the Captain Caveman arm-swinging she does with her non-microphone hand. Thanks for the response.

wait..you're dismissing all the songs because of "captain caveman" arms?

You misunderstand. I was commenting on her performing since you mentioned her onstage charisma. I'm saying I see the energy, but that arm is distracting. And I can't dismiss all the songs when I've heard only a handful.

i cant stand anything by Bob Dylan. Other than that nothing is coming to my mind
I can't stand Jimmy Buffett or James Taylor (and I went to UNC, if you all only knew how sacreligious it was to dislike that guy's music!!! there's a bridge named after him in Chapel Hill)
Has anyone mentioned Tori Amos yet? No? Then I will.
Anything by Tori Amos. Includes the landslide cover.
Urrgh. I can not stand that woman.

I think I might be the only person who hasn't tailgated at a Buffet concert  I don't get the Buffet craze.
Song I can't stand that I heard this morning -- Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. Horrible.

I've never done that either. I have a kind of funny story though. My friend from work (she's black) went to a Buffet show with our ex-boss and some other work people. Anyways, she came back to work on Monday and told us ALLLL about the concert and how she was the only black person there besides the scalpers out front. LOL Also, our boss got smashed and when it was over, they were in the parking lot and she asked someone to hold up a sheet so she could pee. I was soooo glad I wasn't invited to go.

- Jake
Honestly, I think they've made her out to be more than she actually is. She and No Doubt have been around since the mid-80's and it was only until the early 90s that people picked up on them and it wasn't until she started to look like a skin-flint that the media became obsessed with her. Don't get me wrong, I think her voice is unique but she's not a very technical singer -- she's quirky and I think that's what makes her appealing to people -- she doesn't sound like everyone else. She's become a fashion icon in her own right -- has her own clothing line -- is married to Gavin Rossdale which has made her tabloid fodder (when celebs unite!) She's the "it" girl for the moment. They build you up to knock you down...

Tori Amos is one of those that takes time to grow on you. (atleast for me) Her first few albumns I like better than the later ones. Now Yoko Ono...... Nothing is worse than her. I am positive than had she not had a John Lennon connection, she would never have been on a label or ever even heard of by anyone.

My all time, of all time, most HATED person in music. Gene Simmons. One of the most arrogant, self-centered piece of crap to ever walk the earth. (Yes, met him in person once, didn't change my opinion of him). I refuse to put a single penny into his pocket by buying anything KISS.

I don't really have an opinion of GS as a person... mostly because I change the channel whenever any member of Kiss comes on or whenever anyone talks about the band. Likewise I won't read any magazine articles about them simply because I think their music is utter sh*t.

I have agreed with many of the choices listed here. I've been astounded at others that are some of my favorites. I've never even heard of many. I'm sure I have a long list, but for now:
ANY of the many newer country songs that written with the sole intention of trying to make someone cry...forget it.
Rap.
And to me, the all time worst song ever is Walking on Sunshine. I have never heard anything that annoys be so badly.

Oh, my, I heard that. But even worse, yesterday I heard a remake of Refugee. Oh. Oh, noyoudidn't!
Also, I'd like to add that you're all wrong about Gwen. She wasn't stick thin when trapped in a box and spiderwebs came out, and don't speak, too. She's only gotten that thin pretty recently. And I don't think she's just "quircky", I think she's very talented. mmmkay.

Someday...the blind will see the truth. And "Hollaback Girrrlll" (Ain't No)....
will be recognized as the masterpiece that it is.
Amber "that **** is bah-na-nahs!" G. *insert booty swirl/punch, roundabout*
Sometimes I like this song, sometimes its annoying.
And I STILL don't understand what the hell it means!
1. What is a hollaback girl?
2. What the hell does bananas have to do with anything?
Maybe if I understood what the heck she is saying I would like it more - I just don't know . . .

It's not the kind of song that has deep meaning, so just let it go, stomp your feet, shake your booty, feel the beat, and yell along with it :woohoo:

Her popularity skyrocketed first, IMO, with Don't Speak. And actually, she's had a pretty nice plateu all along, as far as popularity goes. She's just a little more naked now than she used to be.

See, now, I think people started to take notice to her when Don't Speak came out. Then, there was a period of time when you didn't hear anything from No Doubt. Then came Return To Saturn, etc. There was a bit of a lull where Gwen wasn't really heard from. She is far more popular now since she's married her husband, put out a clothing line, made a cameo in a major motion picture, and released her solo album. Why? because the label had a lot invested in her as a solo artist so they're going to whore her out. Her album has sold well and she's incredibly successful, IMO.

Okay. There was a tiny lull, but I don't think people just "took notice" of her during Don't Speak time. That album was a huge smash, and there were like, 4 videos out from it. She may be even more popular now, but I think it's from the material and the media saturation - her label and she are promoting the sh** out of her. Which I think is fine. But I don't think it's because she is "skinnier". It's not like she was fat before. Not at all. Not even a smidge. And remember, Rock Steady, with her band, was pretty smashariffic, too. :woohoo:

No, but clearly she keeps getting thinner because she feels the pressure to stay in the spotlight. I read an interview with her a month or so ago and she spoke about how she starves herself to be thin. And yes, it wasn't until Don't Speak and that album that people began to take notice of her and the band started to develop a larger following. However, this is a different type of music -- she's crossing over genres (partly because of who she works with as well) and gaining pop fans, rap fans, rock fans, etc. -- people that normally wouldn't buy a No Doubt album.

yeah. She is. I'm not really sure what your point is with her crossover. Not being rude, I just really don't know your point. I think it's great she's crossing genres so much, makes it interesting.
Uh, I'm sorry she feels pressure to be thin, but I don't think her success really hinges on that factor. It would be different if she was HUGE, maybe, but if she was at her old weight - eh, not that much difference. She may feel pressure to stay in the spotlight, which is understandable. but it's in her head, about the weight loss. Or, rather, up her nose? Anyways. I don't think any of that makes her less talented or awesome.

If you go back, I never said I didn't like her. What i'm trying to say is I think that as a solo artist RIGHT NOW at this very moment, she's more popular. That's the point I've been adressing since five posts ago.

I guess she's a bit more popular now, but I thought you were trying to relate it to her weight, because of this "and it wasn't until she started to look like a skin-flint that the media became obsessed with her. " (that's you talking)
Which is what I disagree with. :wavey:
