So...I didn't see the U.S. in there. What about the hawaiian one in the 50's or something? And wasn't there an alaskan one, too? I've seen TV shows on them. I guess no lives were lost? After seeing the footage, that's hard to believe...

You've managed to use a form of the word "tsunami" in two different threads today, BRAVO!!
David, I thought there were more than 30,000 killed in last year's Indian Ocean tsunami, I thought it was more like 200,000? What source are you using for your information?

Oh my God. That's a part of history about which I know zilch. Does anyone know more about that? The ancient island of Thera (now called Santorini) exploded cataclysmically circa 1450 BCE.
This cataclysmic event may have changed the course of history, wiping out the Minoan civilization (www.dilos.com/location/13406) & possibly generating the myth of Atlantis. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_civilization.

Hawaiian tsunamis in the 20th century (in 1946 & 1960, among others) have killed several hundred people, including 159 people in the 1946 event alone.
Alaskan tsunamis in the 20th century (1900, 1946, 1958, 1964 & 1994) have killed about 137 people.

Oh, thanks! That's not very many, comparatively.

David, I thought there were more than 30,000 killed in last year's Indian Ocean tsunami, I thought it was more like 200,000? What source are you using for your information? The numbers are from the USC Tsunami Research Group & other organizations.
The 30,000 figure is probably just an outdated figure for Sumatra alone. Newer figures are about 80,000 throughout Indonesia (Sumatra & Java), 41,000 in Sri Lanka, 10,000 in India, 4,000 in Thailand, 120 in Somalia, 90 in Myanmar, 66 in Malaysia, 46 in the Maldives, 10 in Tanzania, 2 in Bangladesh, 1 in the Seychelles & 1 in Kenya.

What's that? The one where I fall into the ocean?

What's that? The one where I fall into the ocean?LOL! No, no. That's the giant subduction zone whose southern end is just to the north of you -- around Mendocino.

If your Cascadia fault rips the way the Sumatra-Andaman fault ripped, you're damn right it will be pretty dangerous. In fact, both faults are about the same length, so we know they can both generate M9 megaquakes.

Don't be silly, disasters only happen in American cities. Haven't you ever been to the movies?I've been to a number of cineplexes where there were disasters, all right.
Somebody told me that "The Day After Tomorrow" was a disaster movie, & I said no, it was just a disaster.
