View Full Version : Getting Old...

So as i approach another birthday i have been thinking about growing old. I still feel like a teenager and people still treat me like one but i have begun to notice a few lines around my eyes and i have found 5 grey hairs so far. I find that my insurance agent treats me like a regular adult and wants to chit chat about the weather whenever i go in for a change in my policy... one of those was recently- even though i don't turn 25 for a few more weeks they still are giving me the 25 and older rate for this policy period (that's awesome actually because my car's almost paid off, too... so my car expenses are going down $200 a month!!) i asked about a good student discount and they said i'm too old for it. i wanted to put my 13 yr old jeep on Pimp My Ride (it's really not as bad as some of those cars but i thought if i dirtied it up a bit they'd make it look totally new for me) but i found out that I'm too old. yes, i no longer am included in Mtv's target audience. Tonight when i did my checkout at the bar where i cocktail, i realized that the manager doing my checkout is a year and a week younger than i am. i could have had her job- but i didn't want it- and as a result i feel like some washed- up old loser.
I know that age is really only a state of mind and i totally believe it. I consider myself a kid still, but all around me, more often, i am reminded that i am not getting any younger and people are treating me like a normal adult. People are calling me "ma'am" more and more... store employees don't follow me around anymore (remember how annoying that was guys? those dorks thinking that just because you are young that you are going to shoplift... gawd that got on my nerves)
i don't know... do you guys think a quarter- life crisis exists? so many people i know are getting real jobs and getting married, and pregnancies are no longer a scary unwanted thing. if i get one more invitation to a wedding shower or a baby shower i think i am going to scream.
i think being a 20- something sucks. time to go watch Reality Bites

25 is nothing. Try being 40! That really sucks!
I do know what you mean about the employees being younger then you and having a better job or position then you do. What gets me is when I was that age I would get "no you are not older enough for this job"
I can't stand that ma'am crap either but when they are 16 years old everyone is a ma'am to them. I have a funny story. I went to Applebee's a few months ago and the host took my take out order and called me MISS. I was thinking to myself 'Wow he got it right". It made my night for about 5 minutes until this 90 yr old lady walked in and guess what he called her?
Yep, that's right, MISS! I almost died.
I need to find out what I want to do in life myself. It seems sometimes that people just fall into careers or great jobs. I have never had that luck. It was always a struggle to find any kind of job. I want to be able to say that I met so and so who showed me about ABC and then from there I added EFG and now here I am a multi-millionaire.
Vehicles, mine falied the emissions test 3 times this past May.
MTV what is their target audience anyway? 13? I hate MTV!
Grey hair? That is what hair color is for. Lines around the eyes? I think that Diss had a really good skin care brand to recommend but I don't remember the name.
I know what you mean about being that age where you are not young but you are certainly not old and you just don't feel like you fit in anywhere.
Do you have any career goals? Try to focus on where you see yourself in a few years. You are not old and you have a lot of success and great times to look forward to! Good luck to you!

Here's gettin' old for ya... I stayed home Friday and Saturday night, perfectly content, watching TV. And, yes, I had a sitter! I got up at 8:30 Saturday and Sunday morning..... :( I really need to get a life! It's OK, Jessica. I'll be 28 in 2 months, and it only get's worse!

I honestly don't think that any of you in this thread can be considered old. I think that society gives everyone a really f*cked up idea of age, and I really hate that. 25 is nothing to me. I've always been drawn to women in their fifties because I think they really have it going on. They are definitely not old to me, simply older than me, which doesn't mean much. Basically, I think society tells us that there are certain norms to which we have to conform and they're bull****. And Maria, I don't think there's a thing wrong with staying home Friday and Saturday night. If you had fun with it, that's all that matters.

Well, Ive noticed aches and pains in the hips and lower back when I exert meself in the garden but overall, still very few gray hairs, no noticable wrinkles either....course it might be that if I lost a few pounds Id SEE some wrinkles, but so far I look about 10 years younger than I am and I graduated in 76....
havent resorted to hair color, and Im finally trying to remember to use moisturizer or even sunscreen (actually for as little care as Ive taken of myself, I should look a LOT worse than I do, I guess Ive been lucky in the Genes dept...)
think I'll post a picture in the "what do you look like?" thread.....

Would you really want the manager's job? They work like 60 hours a week and the pay is peanuts. Meanwhile, you get to go in, work for a little while, maybe meet some interesting people and go home with cash in your hand.
i don't know... do you guys think a quarter- life crisis exists? so many people i know are getting real jobs and getting married, and pregnancies are no longer a scary unwanted thing. if i get one more invitation to a wedding shower or a baby shower i think i am going to scream.
I do think it exists. It doesn't really matter what other people are doing though. That's about them. It's what you want to do that really matters.

I feel/felt the same way as you. I remember being bummed when I was no longer eligible to go on Road Rules. 25 is kind of a hard age, but after a little while, you'll be glad you aren't 30, yet. And remember, the important thing is that you are still hot. Wear sunscreen every day, and all that. :D That whole marriage/baby thing does suck a bit, but I never really wanted that, so it wasn't that bad. If you do want that, I'm sure it will happen for you. But really, you are quite young, so just continue to enjoy it to it's fullest as long as you can. Go out! Be Hot!!! :xoxo:

LOL - I'm such an old person. Really - I complain about not meeting people - but I don't do a whole lot.
I have to REALLY be in the mood to go to bars - because generally I hate them.
So yeah - turning 25 was a freak out for me - but I'm fine now. I am ok sitting at home on a Friday and Saturday - what pisses me off are the couple of people in my life who try and make me feel bad about it. But I don't get how they don't understand that staying in is what I WANT to do...ugh. People.
Um - this isn't totally on topic - just thought I'd add my 2 cents :p

I had grey in my hair at age 20!!! Have tons of it but ya have to look closely at my hair to see, It is easily noticeable around my temples (Just not on the pictures posted here recently).

I am 28 and have tons of gray hair. My students even noticed it once when my roots started growing in! It's just genetics, so it's no big deal--it doesn't make me feel old. Especially since I still look young in the face and I still have my figure. And, I'm lucky enough to have a sister who does hair for a living, so I get a great discount on professional dye jobs, ;) .
And I am really enjoying being single right now. I just broke up with someone because going out with him wasn't really adding anything to my life, the chemistry wasn't there, and I couldn't see myself spending the rest of my life with him, so what's the point? Believe me, better to be alone with the hope of good things to come than to be trapped in a relationship, wishing you were free!

The sooner you all realize you aren't considered old until you're 70, the happier you'll be.I couldn't possibly agree more! Did y'all catch that post? Wise words. IMO, no one's really old until he or she has hit 70. At that point I imagine one is pretty used to the idea of being old. My point is that none of you are old. :)

I was part of a discussion last night about what is the best age to be. Most of us (all mid-40s) agreed that 30 was the best. We based it on a balance of accumulated wisdom vs. physical deterioration. Grey hair might be a big deal to a young person, but when you're looking at knee replacements, prostate exams (men), and NO hair, a little grey is nothing.
If I start to feel old, I think about the positive things that I've got because of my age. There's a lot to be said for settling into your career, having confidence in what you do, and being above the youngsters battling each other for rungs on the career ladder.
I also think about things I've experienced that no longer exist and younger people will never be able to enjoy. For example: I used to love the smell of mimeographed copies and can dredge that wonderful oder up from my memory at any time. You kids don't know what you missed (or even what the hell I'm talking about).
Basically, enjoy where you're at, because what you think of as problems now will seem trivial in the future. But don't fear the future, because cool stuff awaits you there.

Good because I wasted my 20s doing stuff I didn't want to do, now I'm doing some of the stuff I wanted to do then. I'm too "old" to be single according to a lot of people. Thanks for this nice post and perspective, and hello from a fellow Bostonian. :wavey:
I remember mimeograph machines, we had them still in grammar school.
I see pictures of myself when I was a teen and think how pretty and thin I was, too bad I could not see that then. But the point is to appreciate me today, which can be a constant battle. The gym helps because I know it's good for me so it gives me a boost. I think that might be the fountain of youth.

No, you truly do look younger as does Deborah.
I'll be 22 on the 1st of September. I've only been carded once and that's only because I was with people in their mid 20s who looked like they were in their teens :o I remember back a few years ago (I was about 19 at the time), I went to DSW with my mother. I was wearing jeans, heels, a black blazer and a red cami. Some woman came up to me as I was browsing and said, "you're like, what? 30?...do you think these are too young for us to wear?" I looked at my mom and laughed. I told her I was only 19 but they weren't "too young" for her. She apologized profusely.
I think a lot of it has to do with how you're raised and as you know (I think), i'm an only child. I've always hung around an older crowd and not with people my own age and I think it's shaped who I am -- for better or worse!

Actually, I think you look mature, too. So does Tiff. It's not that you look old at all, you look very pretty, and your skin and everything looks young, you just have that mature air about you. My friend is like that, too. It's kind of neat, she could do lots of stuff when she was young cause people thought she was older. She's black, though, so her skin quality doesn't tell anything, she just has that "mature, wise, responsible" kind of vibe. Either way you are very pretty, so...

I remember mimeograph machines, we had them still in grammar school.
I remember ditto machines (this was in the late '70s)... the ink was always purple. Some of the movies we saw in class and even some of the text books were from the 50s and 60s.

Wow, only once? I think you're lucky. I get carded often. I don't know if the law is the same in every state but now I believe you're supposed to card anyone who looks under 37 or so in Louisiana. (I might have the age a little off but I know it's some random age that's over ten years older than 21).
Well, by rights, they should card but often at times, they don't. I was never carded in Vegas either which surprised me as I had heard they are rather strict. I went out with Jason in NYC to the Peninsula two years ago. I was only 20 at the time and wasn't carded -- then again, they seemed to know Jason sooo

Have they hit you up for a colonoscopy yet?
BTW, I remember the smell of mimeographed paper and it brings back a surprisingly positive memory of Catholic school.

ok, which ones were the ones that had the drum and cranked out one copy at a time? the ink was purple on those too...when I had business machines in high school we had one of those punch card reader machines I forget what it was called but it read the holes in a card and you fed them thru one at a time in stacks...crap! I cant remember the name!

They're in the picture thread, like, I dunno, maybe 5 pages back, or something? yeah, it was pretty warm. Actually, we watched the fairgrounds from one of rain's friends house. I wanted to see the campus ones, but I got back, and my friend had gotten out of her car a block from the friend's house, cause she was so mad at her husband, and so I was at her brothers trying to find her and stuff.
I read your note and Suze's and I just had to add-
I'm north of you both- :woohoo: in New Hampshire-but hey hello to another Bostonian...
Now since you are New Englanders and somewhat older (it seems) I am 47, and I so remember the smell of mimeograph paper- the smell of leaves burning at the end of your driveway , after you and the family raked em all up-Coming home from school, changing out of your "School" clothes into "Play"
clothes- yelling out "Call me for Dinner Mom," and running out the back door, never to be seen by my Mom again until supper- Same in the summer...leave the house at 9:00 with my pals and not return until lunch or supper- No concerns, no locks on the door, no fears- just playing and laughing at silly games like :red light" or kick the can, or snowball catch-simply playing.
A childhood that sadly is so different than todays'childrens play dates- and various group /sports schedules-being driven everywhere for dates to play..I find that disheartning. Kids are only kids for such a short time..
Am I getting old??- My body is different and I am not the little fox that I was when I was 26-but my head is still 26 at times, I think I have absorbed more and accquired certain knowledge and abilities that come with time...but I don't feel old...unless someone talks about missing the way that you used to be able to go outside on a December morning and smell that snow was coming....I swear...you used to be able to smell when it was going to snow, now there is to many radar satelites in the sky scrambling our sense of smell-haha
I'm not old, time is just passing me by as it does all of us...it just seems time becomes shorter when you become older-It's simple
but like my pal Lindsey says "fate takes time"

Hello there! I love the mountains and ski up there as much as I can. Have you always lived up there?
I've noticed time going much faster and it is scary. A week goes by like a day used to. It is so strange. When I was little and people would say that I would think, "you're off your rocker". But its true. And it just gets faster from what I hear! So I do try to cherish my days although I squander some time. I want to do less of that.
I've heard crime is no higher than it was when we were kids. Its just the way the news reports things and sensationalizes everything that's got everyone in a panic. I think it's awful. I was not such an outdoor kind of kid but I did play out there sometimes, especially in summer, and it was great that "dark time" was 9:00. Ahhh...We also always went camping up north which were idyllic blips in my childhood. We ran around the whole campground without a care.

No, it's true -- not for all people living here but certainly for a lot. I see it where I work. Everyone looks like a clone of everyone else for the most part between handbags, designer jeans, hair cuts, jewelery, etc. but then again, I have to remember that in that particular area, it's a bunch of wealthy people with nothing to do with their money and time but spend it getting services and using their credit in designer shops. Then you have people that adopt their own unique style, etc. It varies depending on the area. Right now (since it's summer), the "in" thing is the O.C. Beach Patrol pants and shorts (it's written on the back). I don't want ANYTHING written on my ass. In fact, anything that takes attention off of my ass and the fact that I don't have much of one is a welcomed thing
Ugh. Man. Okay, one of my friends from high school -- she's a big girl -- she wears things that just don't fit her properly and it breaks my heart. She's turning 23 and still hangs out with 18 year olds who wear skimpy clothing. Thusly, she wears skimpy clothing and it's just. not. working. for. her. Instead of looking nice, she looks trashy. I guess if she feels okay wearing it then go for it but even her mother said something to her

No, just the sweatshirts. *Dodges flying objects*
Apparently, i'm never going to live that e-bay purchase down. The only reason why I bought it was because the back of the sweat shirt was really cool looking.

I don't like to wear anything written on me PERIOD. I think it looks cheesy as all get out and the people who wear those juciy pants look they dressed in the dark, because surely no one would intentionally put on such a thing and the have the audacity to go out in public. I mean, I have t-shirts that say "Hot ****" and things to that effect, but I wear them to bed, not out and about.

I've noticed that a lot of big girls (and men, too) wear clothes that make them look like tomatos on stilts. I don't understand it. These people wear pants so tightly that they'll be toast if they fart. Everyone can wear something that will flatter their figure, but I think a lot of it has to do with denial about their actual size. If not that, then I don't know what.

I think a lot of it has to do with how you're raised and as you know (I think), i'm an only child. I've always hung around an older crowd and not with people my own age and I think it's shaped who I am -- for better or worse!
I can relate. I hardly ever hung around with people my own age when I was growing up. I really did not like being around them. I feel the same way about it shaping who I am too for better or worse.

Me either -- and they didn't like being around me either after my freshman year of high school. I wasn't (and still am not) a partier -- I don't like the club scene nor the bar scene, i'm not a drinker, etc. If that makes me boring then i'm all about being completely and totally dull.

Hmmm. that's weird, cause my friends were pretty mature, over all. They did "party" a little more than me, which mainly meant they had boyfriends. None of them drank or anything, and we were all involved in pretty heavy school/extracurricular activities. I guess I just got lucky.
And yes, not drinking does make you dull. JK - :xoxo:

I was sick the day that I left RI which was my birthday. I felt a bit better the next day in Vegas but I was not 100%. I came back to RI late Sunday night the 15th and I went back to work on Tuesday and Wednesday I was sick as a dog and did not go to work and it took me a week to feel better.

I'm an only child too. I will be 30 next May and I truly didn't feel like an adult until I was 25. I still act 12 sometimes and I look maybe 16. My parents don't look their age either, so that's a good sign for my later years. Although, I have some grey hairs, but hey, I dye. ;)
My mom still treats me like a 5 year old and I hate it, but there are some issues with her family there.

I turned thirty this year and it really did depress me in some ways. Most of my friends are younger than I am and something small, like not being able to call myself a "20-something" anymore, made me kind of sad. Also, I'm not married, no family.... I'm happy with where I am in my life. I'm getting my PhD and I don't want to give that up for a family. But it still made me feel kind of "behind" at the game of life.

WOW, so many people in the same place I am. I have friends that I tell this too, ( I am 27, turning 28 in November) and they just laugh. How could I feel old at 27? But I do. I feel like 20 was decades ago. Look at when I was in school, now I work with kids who will graduate high school 10 YEARS after I did!
But I guess it's just a number...27..37..87...I mean they are numbers. If you had amnesia, how old would you feel? I look 27 but if no one knew, I could be 21 in someone's eyes and maybe 35 in someone else's.
The biggest thing for me is how I dress. I put on these 10-15 pounds and you won't catch me dressing in anything tight or flashy. I don't even show the girls at all anymore..I keep em' covered. I guess once you hit 25, dressing like a slut is just that, dressing like a slut...don't do it. LOL ;-) *of course if I were shaped like Madonna I'd think differently*

I am 17 years old and I love men in their 40s and 50s. I have no idea why but I'm not attracted to guys my age. I just see it as older men are more experienced.
I'm sure that sounded weird to a lot of you. :o
Just stay away from them until you are about 30 ok? Men that age who would date you are either married and cheating, single and petafiles or just creepy.
I always liked older men too but trouble. For now, just stay legal LOL.

Did you see What not to Wear friday with the woman from Southie? She's a lawyer and she wore sweats to work. She described herself as a tomato on stilts. She looked awesome when they were done with her.
She had been sick for a year so her energy and self-esteem were really low and she was a little heavy. I think that when people put on weight they do go into denial and they don't really see what they're doing with their clothing. They don't know how to dress their new body. And probably think they need to lose the weight before they can dress nicely which isn't true. I love What not to Wear because the participants are always glowing and so happy afterward.

I stopped wearing the mini-skirts and bustiers when I was about 30. With the possible exception of a short time during 2003 I really have no desire to either. If I did lose some weight again it might be a different story ;) but honestly I think that your tastes do change a bit when you get older.

I haven't watched that show in soooooooooo long. I think the last time I watched a full episode was when Wayne was on it.
And I have a weird crush on Stacey. Don't ask me why, I can't explain in it.

We can all use that, eh? You definitely look younger than your age and you have a great sense of humor which will keep you young.
By the way, I have those pics of you getting your henna tattoo in Vegas somewhere, they came out good. So when I get a chance I will scan and send. You can PM me your email addy if you're interested. :D
