Sorry to keep you waiting, Amber. I told Mr. Stew last night, because he's such a huge Chris Isaak fan like I am.
I went to summer school in the morning, which was okay. Then I came home and napped for a few hours and cleaned up my room. My mom made a delicious strawberry custard cake for me.
After dinner, my dad I left for the Saratoga Mountain Winery. Chris Isaak was playing and Minnie Driver was opening for him. I brought along my "Silvertone" LP just in case he could sign it, and the people there were really nice about helping me get around.
Minnie Driver was pretty good, better than I thought she would be. Fairly natural, good "shtick," with a nice voice and pleasant but not memorable songs.
Then Chris Isaak came on in all of his red-sequined glory, opening with "American Boy." He just got better and better as the night went on. His voice sounds better live--so crystalline--than it does on record. He hits all the high notes perfectly, and in the case of the "I..." near the end of "Wicked Game" and a few other notes, carries them longer than on the album versions. At one point, he was inches from our seats, which was pretty exciting. Even more exciting were his pelvic thrusts! He carried a drumset on his back throughout the audience! He played drums and harmonica! He spouted water out of his mouth!
Chris is such a hilarious, quick-witted, and talented performer that I think just about anyone would love seeing him.
After the show, I was taken up to the autographing line, near the front--:D. Mr. Isaak came out and quickly signed about five t-shirts before coming to me. He said, "Oh, I remember this album!" Then he actually stayed and talked with me for about a minute. I half-jokingly told him that my birthday wish that he and Stevie Nicks got back into the studio together sometime soon. He said to me, "Hey, you never know. It could happen. She's a very good friend of mine." Then he drew a little cake with a candle in it on the LP and wrote "Stevie + Chris" next to it. I then said "thank you, sir!", to which he replied "Hey, you bet! Oh, and I wrote that bad poem on the back." Then he and I moved on. :]
He was very down-to-earth and intelligent...just a regular guy really. I was surprised at his height--he's 5'9" at the tallest, probably more like 5'7-8"--and the slightness of his build. It was really awesome! :D
I loved coming home to find many Ledgies had wished me a happy one. It most certainly was that. :wavey:
:blob1: :blob2: Oh my goodness! That is a great birthday. That's wonderful, I like Chris, too. And it would be fun to see Minnie Driver, as well. How great, I'm so glad you had a good time. I can't believe you have a "Stevie + Chris" cake drawing autograph. How cool is that???? Oh, and you must know, Chris is a Cancer, too. ;)
Did you guys stay there? Or drive back? was it beautiful? I'm sure it was.
:xoxo: Congratulations. That's weird, I thought he was pretty tall.
amber

We drove back. It was beautiful up there, and it only seats about 2,000 people so the seats are worth the $80 or whatever. There is lots of liquor to go around, too.
And...yeah...I thought he was 6' or taller, but he's most surely on the shorter side. Which is great, because us short guys have that excuse to be wild and limber and mean if the occasion calls! ;)
 true. No one can accuse you of picking on someone smaller than you. :) I like short guys, anyways.
