Several people have been injured after explosions on the Underground network and a double-decker bus in London.
A police spokesman said there were "quite a large number of casualties" at Aldgate Tube Station.
And Scotland Yard confirmed one of several reports of explosions on buses in the city - in Tavistock Place - but said the cause was not yet known.
One caller to BBC Five said his friend had seen "the bus ripped open like a can of sardines and bodies everywhere".
Number 10 said it was "still unsure" whether the explosions were a terrorist attack and although casualties were reported, no further details were yet available.
Ministers are meeting to clarify the situation and the government will make a statement later, Leader of the House Geoff Hoon told the Commons.
PA also quoted union officials as saying sources had told them there had been at least one explosive device on the Underground.
British Transport Police said incidents took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations.
Scotland Yard confirmed they were assisting with a "major incident" and said there were casualties.
Hospitals have said they are no longer accepting non-emergency cases, BBC Five Live reported.
The National Grid, which supplies power to the Underground, said there had been no problems with its system which could have contributed to the incidents.
'Screaming and crying'
Jacqui Head, from BBC News, who had just left King's Cross station on a Piccadilly Line train as an explosion happened, said: "Everything was normal. Suddenly there was a massive bang, the train jolted.
"There was immediately smoke everywhere and it was hot and everybody panicked. People started screaming and crying."
The train was kept in the tunnel for 20 minutes and no announcement was made to explain the delay to passengers, she added.
Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes, near Kings Cross, told Five Live: "My only thought in the midst of all this confusion is that after the celebration of yesterday (for the Olympic 2012 London success) for people to be evil enough - if it is the intentional causing of death and injury - and think that they can justify this in any circumstances is completely unacceptable."
London Fire Brigade said four crews were at Liverpool Street and more were on their way.
Another passenger, who had left the Tube at Fenchurch Street Station, and walked to Aldgate East, told BBC Five Live that he saw injured people.
"As I walked through the bus station I could see people lying on the ground, black, as if they'd been covered in smoke. There were about three or four people on the floor being treated."
Eyewitness Paul Woloszyn from BBC News, who was at Blackhorse Road station on the Victoria Line, said: "We were told there was a bomb at Liverpool Street station.
"I was on the Tube, and they stopped the train and told everyone to get off and evacuate the station."
He said staff had said the entire Tube network had been affected, and leaflets had been handed out with details of alternative bus routes.
Another eyewitness, Dorothy Molloy, had been on a Tube train at King's Cross and said "staff just chucked everyone out of the station".
She said staff there had not given any details, but she said two passengers she had spoken to had said they had received messages saying there had been bombs.
"People didn't really know what was going on, they were just huffing and puffing and saying how annoying it was," she said.
"People don't seem to be panicked, but there's so many police and ambulances coming into the areas. People are just concerned, and some are just annoyed at the delay."

Bus 'ripped apart' in explosion
Breaking news graphic
At least one person is reported to have been killed in an explosion on a bus in central London.
Witnesses said the roof of the double-decker bus was blown into the sky outside the British Medical Association, near Tavistock Place.
One told BBC News 24 the front of the building had been "splattered with blood" and said there were sheets spread on the pavement.
Police said: "There have been further reports of multiple explosions."
Witness Belinda Seabrook said: "I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air.
"It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air.
"There must be a lot of people dead as all the buses were packed, they had been turning people away from the Tube stops."
Another witness said police were about to conduct controlled explosions in the area. The area has been cordoned off.
There were unconfirmed reports there were other blasts on buses in South Kensington and in Marylebone.

A Dutch newssite mentioned Al-Quaeda, but it's so early on to say anything about that, I guess.. though they are the usual suspect, yeah.
edit: this is a quick translation of two snippets I read on that dutch newssite (nu.nl)
"Arab sources which keep close tabs on the Al-qaeda network, have told the BBC that the explosions might be the work of Osama binLaden's network.
According to an Israeli radiostation, Israel was warned on thursday a few hours before the attack by Scotland Yard to increase security and to be extra alert."

I was only a few miles from the attacks at the time, but it was only luck that I wasn't any closer. Yesterday for instance I was right there.
I have also heard that at least one person on the top deck of that bus has survived, a nurse who was shielded from the blast by another passenger. She had to climb over his body to get out of the bus...

Now, for some ranting.
As for OBL and Al-Q -- they need to find them instead of farting around in Iraq.
I totally agree! We knew that these people weren't in Iraq, but we sent the bulk of our troops there and only a small number to Afghanistan (which was where they were believed to be at the time).
Also, I believe that Saudi Arabia, behind the scenes, has a major financial hand in these terrorist groups, and as I recall all of the 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia except for one (He was from Egypt.). I believe they harbor individuals who have information knowing that we won't come after them there. The family members of 9/11 terrorists are a prime example of that. Their government has blocked our government from talking to any of them. Of course, America, especially Oilboy W., will never seriously investigate or go after Saudi Arabia or Saudi Arabian people. The price is too high, especially for Oilboy W. Of course, this is just my two cents.

I am now hearing that at the moment the death toll on the bus is 2. This sounds incredibly low given what happened to it, and that some of the seats on the top deck ended up down in the street. Sounds like either the toll is going to rise, or the bus was practically empty on top, or there are some seriously lucky people there today. There is a suggestion that someone was on the bus taking the bomb elsewhere when it blew up prematurely... still a mystery.

I just do not see a problem with worrying about Americans there and what the global ramifications of this will be; all of that is newsworthy. It would be one thing if that were all they were worried about, but clearly it is not because the vast majority of the articles, etc. are concentrating on the actual event, all parties from all nationalities involved, how Londoners helped in the aftermath, etc.

I don't mean to pick on this - I second your sincere sentiments here & know what you mean to say - but of course there are too many victims.
My heart goes out to the families.
A secondary worry is how this kind of thing can affect a society. In desperation people end up with things like the Patriot Act. :( My hope is that the UK heals as much as possible and as quickly as possible in the healthiest ways.

I'll have to look up the math behind 9/11 -- I remember finding a whole list of how 9/11 computed to all these other things that made perfect sense. An equation for terror. I keep asking myself why it was 7/7/05... is there some kind of numerical significance to all you UK ledgies out there?
There's more to this than any of us could see right now -- this was planned to coincide with the G8 summit, the Olympics in London may be a coincidence, but there's some kind of significance behind 7/7/7 that I can't wrap my brain around yet, I'm sure of it. That's how their minds work. I'm beginning to think the only way we can outsmart them is not by beefing up international security and waging a war against them but by figuring out their formula before they attack again.

I guess it was 4 explosions after all. That was still weird.
On edit, this is what triggered my search, today is a "triple seven vortex" according to astrology as quoted below.
The Triple Seven Vortex
The energy shifts for July will begin on the 6th of July, as the New Moon opens a new lunar cycle. This will be followed the next day, on the 7th, by a triple 7 vortex. This occurs when the harmonics of numbers creates a vortex in the time-space continuum. So the 7th of July 2005, will create a numerological triple 7.
This, dearest Light workers, is an ideal time to open your seventh Chakras, your Crown Chakras, to receive into your bodies the diamond light that will flood through the Lion's Gate Portal in July.

Now, for some ranting.
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner, folks. Damn straight.

777. Oh my. :distress:
I just read this in Newscope. It's not exactly about the same thing, but it does mention that there is a violent air around now.
"Bush's Solar Return
The Solar Return is one of astrologers' favorite techniques for understanding the year's coming circumstances. The Solar Return for the U.S. President is exceptionally noteworthy, since it not only foreshadows personal events, but those for the nation's Commander-in-Chief as well. The Solar Return takes place when the Sun returns to the same location as the natal Sun, generally within a day of the birthday. (Editor's note: Solar Returns can be calculated for the location, residence or birth place. This one is for the residence.)
George W. Bush's Solar Return, set for the White House, takes place at 1:33 pm on July 6, 2005. This chart features Mars in Aries sitting precisely on the Descendant, the entrance to the Seventh House of open enemies. This angular Mars dominates his Solar Return since it's so exactly placed on one of the four angles. Mars here describes the big fights that will characterize the coming year.
Already we can see this with the pending battle over the next Supreme Court appointment and the escalating insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, Mars here is enough for the astrologer to warn of an actual physical attack against Bush. And Mars squares the Sun, dramatically increasing its potential for violent aggression and hostile confrontations.
Astrologers need at least three indicators to give a credible warning of physical danger. A second one is transiting Uranus, which is opposing Bush's natal Mars from the Eighth House of death. This transit is peaking now and through February 2006. Third, consider Bush's personal situation in tandem with the presidential death* cycle, which is now in effect. The president and his security team should be very, very careful.
Solar Eclipse Activated
Solar Eclipses in ancient times were often accompanied by widespread fear of imminent catastrophe, usually in the form of war, famine, or death of the king. In modern times Solar Eclipses continue to inspire awe, as astrologers and astrology students expect the worst. The Solar Eclipse of April 8, 2005 was the most recent, and it did coincide with the death of Pope John Paul II.
The influence of a Solar Eclipse lasts well beyond its actual date, and may be triggered by future transits to the eclipse point. On July 10, transiting Mars will be at 19º Aries, the same degree as the April 8 eclipse. Mars can activate the underlying potential to create spectacular events. Those with natal planets in the same degree area will be most dramatically affected by the activated eclipse.
An activated Solar Eclipse can have a beneficial effect. For example, John Paul II's horoscope remains vital, as the transit of Mars has put him on the fast track to sainthood. Some stocks may take a quantum leap or a sudden plunge, if their first trade charts are hit by this activated Solar Eclipse. Bush's Supreme Court nominee will likely have a vital natal planet at this eclipse point, around 18º to 20º of cardinal signs.
To be sure, the Mars transit over the Solar Eclipse point can also bring tragedy. In militant Aries, we're likely to see horrific acts of violence. Over the coming week the transiting Sun in Cancer catches up to square Mars, creating a general climate of confrontation and defensive action. The mood in Washington is one of gearing up for battle. Dear Britain,
You are my father and my mother and for that, I love you dearly. Although I left your house under bad circumstances, you've never lost your place in my heart. We've had heated words over the years, but I've never lost the civility and respect of law you taught me in my youth.
You instilled values in me that I hold both dear and fundamental to my world outlook and I realize that without you, I wouldn't exist as I do today.
I could take the attacks on me four years ago. I've gotten used to being the whipping boy of the world (for reasons both valid and invalid). I've made my share of mistakes and I'm tough and pretty damn big. But now I weep for my parents.

I just got Neil's message. Thanks everyone for thinking of me, I honestly felt really touched when I read this thread, I didn't think anyone would miss me at all!
I literally just missed getting a tube this morning by minutes. It has been a very strange and scary day. I'm still kind of shell-shocked about it. I was actually up around Liverpool St where one of the blasts occured.
It was more than a little scary. No one knew what to do because we couldn't get anywhere because public transport was suspended. Then a women came over to us and said "I'm getting out of here, you should too, they're bringing dead bodies up here." So we decided to try and walk as far out of central London as we could, so I'm worn out after walking all day. A girl I work with was actually on the bus behind the one that got blown up after being evacuated from Euston. She saw the explosion. She said the roof went three feet in the air and that blood splattered on the building next to it. She just ran into a random nearby building and was freaking out when we spoke to her.
It was weird - because all the buses and tubes were suspended, people were just walking around in silence. We couldn't even to use our mobile phones to find out if friends and family were alright because so many people were trying the network was jammed and it was impossible to get a connection.
Some places were either in chaos, like round Liverpool St and Moorgate, with swarms of police and ambulances, other places looked like scenes out of 28 Days Later. It's not often you see Piccadilly Circus deserted.
Just a really horrible, upsetting day.

This is a terrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I don't understand why the terrorists would have a problem with the fight against poverty, not that this violence is excusable for any reason.
Like I said on LiveJournal, I don't think these attacks should be connected to aid for impoverished countries. I think this was planned way in advance in the way 9/11 was simply to attack a country that is currently fighting terrorism in Iraq. This attack is similar to those in NY and Madrid, and I cannot believe that terrorists did this to protest aid to Africa. In fact, the more I think about this connection, the more ridiculous it seems.
Yes, the G8 summit issues did include aid to Africa, but it also was a meeting to discuss a plethora of other issues, including the war on terror.

It has been a really surreal day. It's horrible to think if I had caught my normal train I would have been on the underground when the explosions occurred. I go past Moorgate and Kings Cross everyday on the tube. It's upsetting to think that all those people killed were just setting out to work, like me, thinking it was just an ordinary day and now their families will never see them again. I feel incredibly lucky, but even to be in the area where it was all happening was frightening.
Anyway, thanks again for thinking of me. I just wanted to check in when Neil said you were all worried. I'm off to bed now. It has been a long day.

So we decided to try and walk as far out of central London as we could, so I'm worn out after walking all day.
Just a really horrible, upsetting day.
you're okay...We Ledgies on this side of the Atlantic were worried about our UK counterparts

Thanks for checking in, Sharon! Good to hear from you. :) We have all been worried about our UK Ledgies all day.
We have 9-11, you guys have 7-7. :(
Horrible....disgusting...senseless.

We were all just a little worried in a non stalker way and I am SOOOOO happy you were late - SHEEBUS!!!!!
BTW - your Piccadilly Circus deserted comment reminds me of Stevie's comment after 9/11 about Las vegas being empty - Dear God . . . show us the way back
These people just do not get that killing innocents is not the right way and that though they feel, right or wrong, the world has slighted them, it is wrong.

I'm glad to hear you and the rest of the UK ledgies are OK... I know how you feel... I was by myself in Madrid on a subway when the bombs went off there. I got off the subway one stop before the main station were the explosions occured... things like that make you think of the "what ifs" and also how lucky you are.

This tragedy is so sad. In a way it's like I feel like it's our (the USA's) fault. I mean, GB has always been such a great ally to us. It's like, this is what they get for standing by us and helping us? I'm praying for all those affected by this, just as the Brits did for us during 9-11. I also hope they find those who are responsible, alive or not.

Well, it isn't our fault, its the terrorists' fault. But had our commander in chief gotten Osama this may not have happened. So again we ask, WTF are we doing in Iraq? Well, it's about the $$,$$$,$$$,$$$ and that is pathetic. And for the umpteenth time today I am sickened.

Al Qaeda's version of Heaven's Gate, perhaps? Do we know if this was a suicide bombing yet?
I just saw on the news that survivors from the bus are saying it was a suicide bomber on the bus. One a read said 2 girls saw a man sit down and then exploded.

This disgusts me:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4662809.stm
Hundreds of commuters spent Thursday night stranded in London and some have accused hoteliers of cashing in on the crisis in the capital.
Prices at a number of London's hotels increased by more than double on Thursday night, the BBC has learned.
Lastminute.com was warning customers about the price rises two hours after the first blast.
A Trading Standards Institute spokesman said profiteering after an act of terrorism was reprehensible.
With the transport networks down and no way of returning home, one businessman from Manchester told the BBC he had paid £250 for an £80 room.
Bomb attacks
A spokesman for the British Hospitality Association, which represents hotels, said he was surprised by the increases.
Commuters said they were appalled, and thousands chose to walk for hours to reach home rather than stay the night in a hotel.
London's hotels were 80% full before the blasts, and on Wednesday the UK tourist industry was celebrating the news of London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
But some US tourists have now cancelled bookings for the coming week following Thursday's bomb attacks, which killed at least 37 people and left 700 injured.

I think when anyone tried price gouging here after 9/11 there were some consequences .That really is odious to take advantage of such a horrific event to make a profit. The names of the businesses that do this should be listed so they can be boycotted in the future.
BombaySapphire3

I like what one of the CNN correspondents said ,his name escapes me right now it's late and I've had a couple glasses of Napa vintage. The gist of it was that terrorism would begin to disappear when religious fundamentalism of ALL religions begins to disappear .I have to concur with that one.
You can't link fundamentalism to religion solely, though. There's fundamentalism based on political convictions too. Or extreme nationalism.. like ETA.

Can you believe most of the public transport system, including the majority of the tube network was up and running today? I think most Londoners decided that the best way to deal with yesterday's events is not to live in fear, but to get back to normal as soon as they can. Honestly it's made me proud to be a Londoner.

I worked all day today in and around London, and although the streets were a little less busy than usual, it seemed like nothing had happened at all yesterday. The area where the bus still sits is blanked off, but a couple of streets away it's all normal. It was truly amazing that so much of the tube service was running today, and the buses were operational too.
I think a lot of people took today off work because they thought the transport system would be a nightmare, and that was why the place seemed slightly quiet, but on Monday I'm sure we'll all be back to normal.
One thing I saw today was a van driver who stuck an enormous flag of St George to the side of his van, and had written defiant messages all over it to the terrorists - 'you'll never stop us living our lives the way we want to...'

I hadn't commented earlier, because I've been trying to process yet another act of senseless violence. I don't comprehend such behaviour, not even intellectually... and I've never understood the mindset of those who believe they can bend people to their will by the use of force or intimidation.
