View Full Version : Bands/Singers You Used To Hate, But Now You Love

When I was in my early teens, I absolutely despised John Mellencamp and Dire Straits. I liked two Mellencamp songs ("Ain't Even Done With The Night" & "Rain On The Scarecrow") and one Dire Straits song ("So Far Away"), but thought the rest of their material was just the pits.
These days I love them both, and can't figure out for the life of me why it was that I didn't like them (maybe they were overplayed?).
Are there any singers or bands that you just couldn't stand at some point in time, but that you're now a fan of?

Oh, yeah, I forgot, Pet Shop Boys were good, too. It's just, at the time, i didn't like synth. You know, growing up on Classic Rock and all that, I thought synth was stupid. which is why I liked the Mellen and the Straights....I've rescinded my previous "synth is bad" stance, though. I kind of like Duran Duran, too. Erasure is the bomb. Everything is peppy and melodic.

Others:
Dream Theater -I used to loathe LaBrie's vocals.
Keith Urban -I didn't really even give him a chance initially because he was labeled as "country".
Duran Duran -They're pretty corny, but I love 'em.

Honestly...still havent gotten into the Zep...never have. Just not my cup of tea. Never really liked The Who either. I know that's sacrilege amongts musicians but...hey...whatever.

Country. I used to loathe country, everything about it. Then I came to my senses and realized that Garth Brooks and Reba are not true country; Dolly, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, and Emmylou Harris are. I'm a huge fan of those three and years ago, I never would have given them the time of day. When I was fifteen or sixteen, I got a copy of Emmylou's Wrecking Ball album and that changed my outlook on the genre and the real country artists, not the crap they foist on us as country via Shania and Faith Hill.

Led Zeppelin, Never understood the hub-bub about 'em when I was in my late teens/early 20's until I took a chance and bought myself a Christmas present which was the BEST boxed set ever released, the Led Zeppelin boxed set from 1990....Been hooked ever since.
Other than Led Zep if I never like a band/musician I very much doubt I ever will grow to like 'em (And YES, I do give all types of music a listen...So I, at the LEAST, give 'em a listen.)

I have a list saved on my computer somewhere, of the "100 Greatest Gay Songs," or something like that. It was compiled by some gay newspaper/magazine.
I was actually surprised how many of them were songs that I've always loved ("On The Radio," "I Love The Nightlife," "No Matter What," and so on). But I was also surprised by how many of them I had never even heard of.

Duran Duran -They're pretty corny, but I love 'em.
One of my favorite songs EVER is Come Undone.
I wasn't a fan of The Police, Simply Red (thanks for ruining those, Mom) nor Hall and Oates. Mom still listens to Simply Red and I enjoy it. Hall and Oates, I love (i'm not ashamed to admit it!). And of course, The Police--Sting's voice really grew on me.

John Mellencamp - I play Disc 1 of Words & Music quite a bit
Pat Benatar
Bonnie Raitt (can't say I love her, but I like her)
Simon & Garfunkel
Janis Joplin (a favorite since college, but not in high school)
Sheryl Crow (I knew only her earlier hits, many of which I don't like)
The Mamas & The Papas (used to find the boring, but now a favorite)

Don't let my mother hear you say that because she just LOOOOVES his voice. The new SUV has a CD player in it. I had to make a deal with her the other day--you listen to Stevie this trip, next long trip, you can force me to listen to Simply Red. Lucky for me, she always forgets to put her CD's in it

Back in the 1980s when I was in college and the Replacements were a big college band I disliked them now I think they're very good.I also have to join the ranks of the people who once did not like Led Zeppelin and now do .While I would not consider myself a huge fan still I can appreciate their artistry and what they mean to music in an historical perspective. They really were great.Maybe I should get their How the West was Won dvd.

But one of Reba's albums had so many fluffly pieces of crap hits that I didn't even bother to buy it to see if the other tracks were good. She's an experimenter, though, and sometimes when she tries new things, it doesn't work. I can see what you mean about the voice. Some singers are amazingly talented but their voices don't appeal to everyone. I can't really take Emmylou Harris' voice, but I know well that it's fantastic. For some reason I personally don't like it and I have never been able to explain that.

U2 when the Joshua Tree came out. Hated them at the time.
I violently disliked U2 at that time too. That record was so overplayed, and I thought Bono was a pretentious, pompous ass who overworked his vocal break.
My feelings about Bono haven't changed, but I do like about 8 or 9 songs out of their catalogue. Though I can only take about 4 songs in a row, due to the vocal break abuse. It grates on me. I do think they have some great songs, however.

I never gave Emmylou any attention until she released Wrecking Ball ten years ago and then I became a convert. I have so much respect for artists who push themselves to create fresh and exciting music as they get older and she's genius to me. It's quite a task to find artists who create their best work more than twenty years after they started. The whole voice thing is understandable, though. Like Celine. John Mellencamp, I guess is one.
Actually, the entire "country" genre...loathed country until I joined a country band in 1994 (the need for $$ makes musicians do the most unlikely things)...then after a few years I got burnt out on the whole country "scene" (not so much the music, but the music brought back the bad memories)...just within the last three or four years have I gotten back into listening to country again...and with an appreciation that I NEVER had before.

I'm excited to see her in The Pink Panther with Steve Martin and Kevin Kline. That should be a HILARIOUS movie.
ooo, me too! The thing is, she wasn't trying to be funny, or didn't seem to have comedy chops, but her natural air worked really well with it. She actually seems like a nice person and stuff. I dunno, it's hard to explain what I mean, but she wasn't hamming the comedy up like the rest, but somehow it worked... :) And I am constantly in love with Kevin Kline. ;)

Mreowr!!! She's a Cancer too. But, sadly, she's hotter and more fast times, so she automatically wins.... Hey, those are the rules, I didn't just make them up! Although...mmm, no, I won't tell that story....

Why don't they make a Batman film and leave out Batman?
Well, they did put Halle Berry in Catwoman.

I don't know anything about this. A Pink Panther movie? Are there no new ideas in Hollywood? They're remaking 'The Poseidon Adventure,' too. Why they insist on besmirching classic films with tepid remakes is beyond me.

Because nostalgia sells. Besides, the Poseidon Adventure was pretty good back in the day. If they re-make for a newer generation to be "better"...then they should get a pretty decent return at the box office. It's all 'bout the cash.
Does that mean I agree with all these remakes? no...most of them I despise. Think of this way...someone will be trying to remake Lord of the Rings in 20 or 30 years. How crappy will THAT be?

Just remember...
Charlton Heston's was a remake
Marlon Brando in [i]Mutiny On The Bounty was a remake
Oh, crap, I had about 5 other movies in my head that are considered greatest movies of all-time that were remakes and they just disappeared from my head.

Yeah, some remakes work but a Panther film without Sellers is a Monty Python film with replacement actors. No, not even that. Sellers wasn't just the actor employed for the role, that genius mad-man was the character. It's a no-no, you can't touch it without him.
I agree. Its like remaking Dr. Strangelove...it just shouldnt be done.

I can send you my favorite Emmylou songs if you want to give her another try. :)I'll bite. I'm
[email protected] if you don't remember it. Sorry it took me so long to answer. For some unknown reason, I no longer have internet access at home and so I'm at school mooching off of computers here. Anyway, I appreciate it. :)
I love Carly Simon, have every one of her albums. Not too enthused about her new one, though, I must admit. The Bedroom Tapes? Yeah, I like only one song off of that album. And her Christmas album? Don't even get me started. That was a mistake. Oh well. :distress:

Nah, I actually like The Bedroom Tapes quite a bit, "We Your Dearest Friends" in particular. Her new one is a covers album called Moonlight Serenade and it sounds atrocious. I doubt I'll be buying it. :distress:

Right now I remeber a song, I just called to sy I love you, by Stevie Wonder. I hated it, but recently and after listening carefully the words, I found it very romantic, and I like it a lot.
No. I only go to see Stevie Nicks/Mac, apparently. Cause it always costs so goddamned much. Wish I had, though. You loved it, I take it?
I did love it! They were playing at The Independant, and I actually went to 2 shows. It was fagpop heaven...

I found The Bedroom Tapes to be among the finest things she's ever done. "So Many Stars" is my "feeling suffocated but isolated at the same time in New York" song- it's scary how she gets it. However, I must admit that the last song, "For You, George," is the most tuneless, meandering piece of dreck that should have totally been left off of the album. Ironically it is a song about breaking through her own writer's block. .
I do agree that her newest album is not sounding too great... methinks she is trying to jump onto the Rod Stewart bandwagon. Oy... I guess I'll buy it only if I decide to take up "fox trot" lessons. Still... that shamelessly airbrushed picture of her on the cover is worth a good laugh or two.
