And Pearl Jam is #1?? That's just wrong. And were is Led Zeppelin?? Who IMO is the greatest rock band ever.
Edit.....whoops. Just saw that is was AMERICAN bands, which would leave Zeppelin out. Wouldn't that cut FM out of the picture too, or if they have 2 AMerican memebers they are an american band  ?

And the greatest American rock band ever is ...
I knew last week's column would spark heated debate among music aficionados, but I didn't realize just how intense it would get until the e-mail started pouring in — more e-mail, in fact, than I've received about any other column.

And though the results were close, there could only be one winner. So, without further ado, I present your top pick for the greatest American rock band of all time:

Yes, the Seattle rockers outranked powerhouses such as Van Halen (No. 3), The Doors (No. 9) and Nirvana, which landed at No. 18. At first, I was shocked by the choice (to be honest, I fully expected Aerosmith to win). But the more e-mail I read, the more it began to make sense.

Why is Pearl Jam the greatest? Here's what you said:

•They've stayed true to themselves. "Instead of selling out with videos and constant press coverage, they pulled back at their height, and focused on the music," wrote Willie McNabb in El Dorado, Ark. "They belong up there with Neil Young, Zeppelin and The Beatles because they never compromised their integrity, which is really all any of us have."

•The music rocks. From Atlanta reader Tom Baker: "They've continually reshaped their sound, album after album, and are still making great, vital music 12+ years into their career. What else could you want?"
Want to interview Pearl Jam?

You debated, you voted and now you've chosen the No. 1 American rock band of all time.

But wait, it's not over: Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready wants your questions! Scroll to the bottom of the page for details on how to get in on the action.

•Their records sell ... "... because they're good, not because they've been hyped to death by the media," McNabb added.

•There have been scores of imitators. "How many Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder knockoffs have invaded rock radio since Ten?" asked Scott Jordan, another Atlanta fan.

•Their concerts are first-rate — and affordable. Jake Mohlman from Barrington, R.I., praised the band for keeping ticket prices low. "It's unique in an era when most artists gouge their fans to the limit," he wrote. "Likewise, releasing their shows on low-cost bootlegs brings a new dimension to seeing one of their shows."

See below for the rest of the top 20 and more of your comments. For more debate, feel free to chat with me at 1 p.m. ET.

2. Aerosmith. "Their first hit was in 1973, and they're still selling out concerts," wrote Brooklyn Center, Minn., reader Darren Slack, who added that "fans don't boo them if they play stuff off their latest album" and they're "probably one of the first groups teenagers and parents both dig (and not in a Pat Boone kind of way, either)." Said David Matthews from Tampa: "No one died, no one got p—-ed and left the band, no one got kicked out and was replaced — and their ability to rock the house is still going strong."

3. Van Halen. "How many bands from America have been as huge as Van Halen, then had to replace the lead singer and still be as popular, or even more popular, than before?" asked St. Louis reader Christopher Cokenour. "Van Halen's songwriting, whether with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, took you to a place of happiness, never getting too heavy, never being too stupid." In addition, Patrick Beam in Little Rock was one of several readers to say "Eddie Van Halen influenced every guitarist that was alive or has been born since."

4. The Eagles. "They win for longevity (I've got my ticket stub to their 1977 Hotel California tour), concert performances (also have ticket stubs from six 'farewell' concerts), they write their own songs and have tons of records sold," said longtime fan Sheri Broom from Savannah, Ga.
Whitney's picks for the top American bands (they go to 11)
Rank

5. Journey. "No contest!" said Deer Park, Texas, fan Bob Barney. (He went on to type the band's name 12 times using a large font and a spectrum of colors.) From Ronda Nelson in Terre Haute, Ind.: "They have been rockin' for over 30 years and are out on tour right now supporting a new CD."

6. Guns N' Roses. "A lot of people have said that it's unbelievable that Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine and Patience could have all come from the same band," wrote Laurie Hamilton from Bennington, Vt. Said Marlborough, Mass., reader Matthew Sychantha: "These guys practically set up the world, combining punk, thrash metal and hair metal in an interesting, twisted style."

7. The Grateful Dead. "I feel a band's records are limiting; true musical genius comes through live music," wrote Carl Fuller, a Dead fan from Flagstaff, Ariz. "The Dead also created an entire tribal subculture in society. Few bands can claim this honor."

8. Queensryche. Some reasons why, according to David Russell in Fishkill, N.Y.: "They've endured 25 years of the changing rock scene. They still tour all the time, selling out all the time and putting on an unbeatable live show. Their music has evolved with the times and has never failed to succeed. Their lyrics are constantly full of thought-provoking material and deep meaning. They are the best all around band ... period!"

9. The Doors. "They had the complete package: musicianship, lyrics, songs and stage presence," wrote Michael Morris from Bourne, Mass. "But more importantly, their music has far transcended the band (even with the cult-psycho-martyr status of Jim Morrison) and stands the test of time. No one was doing, or will ever do, what The Doors did. They were the original alternative band, and that makes them the greatest American band."

10. R.E.M. "Their ability to link lyrics with great depth to an alternative/folk/rock sound is unparalleled in the world of music," said Lebanon, Pa., fan Jay McCumber. "There is no one who sounds like R.E.M. except R.E.M. Automatic For The People is the greatest American rock record ever."

11. The Allman Brothers Band and Fleetwood Mac (tie). "Duane Allman was one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived; a legitimate argument could even be made that he was the best," wrote Pittsburgh fan Ned Twyman. Jeff Sprankle from East Haddam, Conn., agreed, adding, "this band has had benders that have lasted longer than most bands' careers." As for the Mac, Debbie Gultice in Xenia, Ohio, said "harmonies between Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are haunting. And who has ever heard of a band with three songwriters who can create hits?"

12. Metallica. From Patrick Dickens: "Although I don't like where heavy metal is today, Metallica essentially created an entire sub-genre of rock 'n' roll. Even if some won't give them credit for creating heavy metal, there is no doubt that they defined it and carried everybody else along on their backs."

13. KISS. "Thirty-two years, millions of records, massive merchandising and a fan base that does not want them to stop touring, ever" qualify them as the best band, according to Christopher Burke in Colorado Springs. As for those live shows, Michael Gershe in Akron, Ohio, said they're "the most fun you can have for two hours with your clothes on."

14. The Ramones. "Every band, American or otherwise, has been influenced by them in some fashion," said Raleigh reader Tom Maeser. From Matt Cox: "They didn't burn out, they didn't fade away, and they weren't a one-hit wonder. They were a band who played to make music and turn people on. I got turned on to the Ramones in the fifth grade, and today, 20 years later, they are still my favorite band, and my kids' favorite band."

15. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and Creedence Clearwater Revival (tie). Steve Howell from Bear, Del., had a few things to say about E Street: "From a recorded album perspective, (their) stuff is indescribable. If you haven't seen them, don't walk, run, to get tickets the next time they are in town. The first thing you will think after the show is, 'I want to — no, I need to — go again tomorrow night.'" And Creedence? "They define good ol' American rock," wrote Andrew Neuburger in Olathe, Kan. "They have 20+ songs that get regular play on many different radio formats. A great combination of rock, country, R&B, rockabilly and swamp pop made their songs accessible to everyone."

16. Dave Matthews Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd (tie). "DMB is the epitome of what American rock stands for: huge tours, loud rock and the working class," wrote Gabriel Wallis in Greenville, S.C. Mike Minnick in Morton, Pa., praised Skynyrd's "killer songs ... and they still tour in spite of losing so many members. And the music still sounds the same as when they were still complete."

17. The Beach Boys. "The Beach boys, fueled by Brian Wilson, were the only band to compete with arguably England's best-ever rock band, The Beatles," wrote Milwaukee fan Nick Blavat. "Pet Sounds still pushes what music is, even by a 2005 standard. Brian Wilson's George Lucas-like re-touching of the Beach Boys' unreleased masterpiece, Smile, clearly shows their staying power and influence in American music."

18. Nirvana. From Greg Mahoney, a college professor in Georgetown Township, Mich.: "The first time I heard Nevermind, to paraphrase Beck out of context, I knew things were gonna change, I could feel it. To bolster the point: I do most of my research in China, (and) during the nation's first Beer Festival, held in Shenzhen, a teenage cover band fronted by a punked-out Chinese girl ripped through Smells Like Teen Spirit with all the ferocity of Cobain and Co. Indeed, things had changed, and you could feel it."

19. The Replacements. Among Bill Walsh's long list of reasons for picking the 'Mats, the Illinois reader said that "Tommy Stinson was 13 when they recorded their first album, Sorry Ma, Forgot To take Out the Trash, "the high school in Heathers is Westerberg High" and, finally, "What other band would have the cojones to name an album Let It Be, which is better than the Beatles' version?"

Rounding out the list is ...

20. Bon Jovi. Unfortunately, most voters chose not to elaborate why Jon, Richie and the gang were tops. I guess they wanted the music to speak for itself — or maybe they were just too busy rocking to type.

Whitney's picks for the top American bands (they go to 11)

1. R.E.M.
2. The Ramones
3. Guns N' Roses
4. The Grateful Dead
5. Aerosmith
6. The Replacements
7. Heart
8. Guided by Voices
9. The Velvet Underground
10. Big Star
11. The Stooges

Hmm...thats odd. Fleetwood Mac wasnt an American rock band. Although I guess you could say the Stevie/Lindsey lineup made them officially "americanized." Where in the hell is Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers??! it doesnt get any more American than that. Losers...

They are from Seattle, WA (and all over America as they are military brats).

In 69/70ish Ann Wilson's boyfriend, Mike Fisher (brother of Heart lead guitarist Roger Fisher), ditched the Vietnam draft and moved to Vancouver. Ann followed him there ("Magic Man", "Love Alive", "Just the Wine" and many, many other Heart songs penned by Ann and Nancy are about him). Once Nancy was "of age", she too moved to Canada to join Heart (originally called "White Heart") and subsequently shacked up with Roger Fisher.

Heart's eponymous debut was released on Mushroom Records, an independent Canadian label. Heart's second album, Magazine, was mired in legal battles over publishing and creative control with Mushroom. The members of Heart moved back to Seattle, signed with Capitol records and released Little Queen. After the legal troubles with Mushroom were settled, Heart re-released Magazine once they could get their hands on it to improve some aspects of the production.

The rest is fantastic history.

That's right. I remember from "Behind the Music" that for some reason early in their careers they were playing in Canada a lot....
:xoxo: to Towie. I also remember that their mom talked about how Ann got certain "chubby genes" from whatever side of the family, and that she was shy, because of it, kind of, but she always loved to sing, and just became a different person when she was singing. When you said they did Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters it struck something in my head and I checked my trade page. What do you know it was on there! So I've had this the whole time and didn't even know?! I need to pay more attention to my trades. And I had no idea this was an official release!! I know what I'm watching tonight!

Yup, that's it. You should love it. These Dreams is particularly good because they ditched all the synthesizers and Nancy sound angelic.

In case anyone wants more useless info.... :D
More useless info?? Why, you've come to the right place!

Ann always had weight issues. Her boyfriend had issues with it, so she didn't eat and did cocaine. After Mike Fisher ditched her for another woman, that's when she started packing on the pounds by washing down doughnuts with champagne.

She looks really good now at 55 years old. Last year I had front row tickets at the Greek Theatre in LA and was standing right in front of her four feet away for the entire concert. Their latest album, Jupiter's Darling, is pretty good- lame title, but a good album.

Honestly where are:
The Byrds
The Jefferson Airplane
The BB&Hco with Janis
Santana
Heart (or are they canadian?)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Jimi Hendrix Experience (I think he was American but became famous in Britian?)
CSN&Y ???
AND since when was The Mac and AMerican band (I always considered it British)

Heart & Jimi Hendrix are both from Seattle.

In addition to those above, what I wanna know is where's:
ZZ Top
Buffalo Springfield(since The Byrds were mentioned...CSNY would sort of be a mix of those two bands)
Little Feat
Grand Funk Railroad
Mountain
Poco
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
The Edgar Winter Group
Alice Cooper

Heart's second album, Magazine, was mired in legal battles over publishing and creative control with Mushroom. The members of Heart moved back to Seattle, signed with Capitol records and released Little Queen. After the legal troubles with Mushroom were settled, Heart re-released Magazine once they could get their hands on it to improve some aspects of the production.

I've always had the opinion that the originally released version was actually better than the post-litigation version.

The OC Fair show is sold out. I know you'll probably be able to source out some comp tix, however, I'm not paying scalpers.

I was the 6'4" dude with the 5'3" shrimpy chick (my dearest friend, Cheryl)!

Black Dog
Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
The Battle of Evermore (AMAZING)

and some new songs that aren't on any albums:

Break the Rock
The Witch
Sister Wild Rose
Two Faces of Eve

BLACK DOG! Thats my all time favorite LZ. I got to hear that. I think Heart's version of Rock and Roll is better the original and Stevie's (although Stevie's is great) but then again I dont think the original is all THAT good, while Black Dog is just perfection, so I got to hear them do that. I have FINALLY learned to not take these list too seriously and not allow them to offend me. It is just an opinion and not necessarily fact (which is why it is opinion, fact isn't involved.).

Also, several people have stated that CCR isn't on the list, but they are #15.

Anyway, there are bands that I think should appear on this list but aren't there: Jefferson Airplane, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Byrds, Velvet Underground, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. A good list isn't complete without these bands, IMO.

I would put the Pretenders on there, if Fleetwood Mac can be on there. They may have formed in England, but they have seen most of their success here in the states. I think that Fleetwood Mac is on there, because, unfortunately, most people are only familiar with stuff from 1975-present. They probably don't know that the band was formed in England and was successful there as a blues band.

Also, I think the reason that people like Elvis, Jimi Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix Experience), Janis Joplin(Big Brother and the Holding Company), and Prince (Prince and the Revolution/NPG) aren't on the list is because people think of them as individual performers not as a member of a band. Therefore, they aren't on the Greatest American Bands list.

Also, can I just say that I wouldn't have the Dave Matthews Band anywhere near my list! I just don't get the greatness. I have tried to get it, and I still don't. JMO, though.

My favorite is Marquee Moon and I think that would be a good album to start with. The lead guitar is startling and very up front in the mix, you'll dig it. Friction is the best track, imo, it'll have your jaw on the floor.

They have a live album called Blow Up that's amazing, too. It has a 14 minute version of Little Johnny Jewel that must be heard to be believed.

See, I wouldn't. This is shocking coming from me, because anyone who knows me knows I LOVE The Pretenders. I don't think of them as an American band. Sure, Chrissie Hynde is American, but everyone else who has been in the band have been English. Most of their success, really, has been in the UK. The breakout singles from their debut, except "Brass in Pocket," didn't do too well in the USA. On their second album, I think "Message of Love" did moderately well in the US, but then again, that album didn't really do well anywhere. Learning to Crawl was really their peak when it came to success, because that came out in 1983, and the singles got some MTV airplay. They've always been popular, but that was arguably their peak.

Aaanywho. Most of their singles and albums, etc, did really well in the UK, Australia, etc, so I don't consider them an American band.

As have many others. Her influence is really no greater than a slew of other female artists, and she was influenced herself by the likes of Grace Slick and Janis Joplin.

Etta James is ****ing awesome. I love her.

And, a lot of the women on that list aren't necissarily rock singers, but they're deffinitely rock & roll. I mean, Ronnie Spector, for instance, is a ****ing badass - totally rock & roll. Was she even on that list, though? I can't remember as I haven't seen that thing in forever.

I love her too - but to say she is rock and roll in any way shape or form was wrong and I mean that as no slam to her. Also, rememeber in the beginning, there was really just rock and roll - pop and rock sep. in the late 60's IMO.

Yep, and that would put Stevie in the top five if I remember correctly and if a pop/rock def. is used. If a strictly rock def. is used, she would, I think be higher than that.

Top five? Nope, that would be (in no particular order)....

4. Chrissie Hynde
5. Tina Turner

But it's subjective, of course.

I agree with respect to Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, and Ella Fitzgerald because there were not ever rock and roll. As for the others, either by virtue of the time they were most popular or by virtue of some of their songs bordering on or being rock and roll - they were a better fit. A good example is Madonna - I get that she is pop and that no longer really is rock per se, some of her songs exhibit rock and roll characteristics - does that qualify her, well that is a little more subjective.

I wouldn't point at her albums and call her rock (maybe her first two comeback albums for the most part, but there was plenty of pop sprinkled in), but she's almost unparalleled in terms of putting on a live rock show.

At that time, there were so many female artists putting on amazing rock shows that it boggles the mind. Tina, Chrissie Hynde, Heart, Stevie, Debbie, even Bette Midler. It's sad that that time has come and gone.

Jerry Wexler, Atlantic Records' legendary producer, describes Etta James as "the greatest of all modern blues singers...the undisputed Earth Mother." Her raw, unharnessed vocals and hot-blooded eroticism has made disciples of singers ranging from Janis Joplin to Bonnie Raitt. James' pioneering 1950s hits - "The Wallflower" and "Good Rockin' Daddy" - assure her place in the early history of rock and roll alongside Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Ray Charles. In the Sixties, as a soulful singer of pop and blues diva compared with the likes of Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday, James truly found her musical direction and made a lasting mark.
James was born Jamesette Hawkins in Los Angeles in 1938. Though brought up in the church, she was drawn to rhythm & blues and rock and roll, and by her midteens had formed a vocal trio that worked up an answer song to Hank Ballard's "Work With Me Annie" entitled "Roll With Me Henry." The trio caught the attention of bandleader Johnny Otis, who recorded "Roll With Me Henry," which was retitled "The Wallflower" and topped the R&B chart for four weeks in 1955. James toured the R&B circuit with Otis and other artists and recorded for Modern Records until 1958.

It was at the Chicago-based Chess label (where she recorded for Chess and its Argo and Cadet subsidiaries) that she molded her identity as a singer of both modern blues and pop-R&B ballads. She was signed by Leonard Chess in 1960 and had her talent nurtured by producer Ralph Bass and mentor Harvey Fuqua (of the Moonglows). James crossed over to the pop market as an interpreter of soulful, jazz-tinged ballads such as "All I Could Do Was Cry," "My Dearest Darling," "Trust in Me" and "Don't Cry, Baby," which she sang without sacrificing her bluesy and churchy vocal mannerisms. In 1968, she adapted a grittier Southern-soul edge, cutting "Tell Mama" and "I'd Rather Go Blind," which remain among the most incendiary vocal performances of the era. All totaled, James launched thirty singles onto the R&B singles chart and placed a respectable nine of them in the pop Top Forty as well.

For much of her career James battled heroin addiction, which has added to her aura as a survivor. A cleaned-up James made a successful comeback in the Seventies, re-signing with Chess in 1973 and opening for the Rolling Stones in 1978. In 1984, she sang "When the Saints Go Marching In" at the opening of the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. James has subsequently remained active on the touring and recording fronts, cutting the Grammy-nominated albums Seven Year Itch and Stickin' to My Guns and reuniting with Jerry Wexler to record 1993's The Right Time with the simpatico Southern-soul musicians at Muscle Shoals Recording Studios.

Courtney Love is an idiot. She doesn't know **** about music.

"Juliet" is one of Stevie's key change songs. However, it should be noted that Stevie probably doesn't "write" a key change. Most of her songs are based on a melodic base line and her chords follow that. "Gold Dust Woman" and "Blue Lamp: are excellent examples.

So, while it may look like she's changing keys, she's really not- she's just playing chords that are out of the key to create that particular sound. It's a great effect, but it's not music theory that's for sure.

Jason already admitted he was incorrect, but for posterity "Rhiannon" is all in one key (Am).

That's it ! I don't know as much about theory as I should at this point, but I knew she tossed a chord or two in there that made no sense. But that does not a key change make. Thanks, Homie.
