I believe if memory serves me right, that Lindsey switched to this model for the Tusk Tour, and has used it ever since. I'm curious as to the reason that he made this choice, and why he's been so loyal to it. I'm more curious about it, not being critical. :D

I don't know shiz about guitars, but I believe Lindsey wanted a fuller sound than his Les Paul was giving him, so he went to Rick to come up with a guitar especially made for Lindsey.
We have a few Ledgies who own Turner Model Ones and I've heard one "up close" (LOL), and it sounded amazing.

The Rick Turner Model 1.
As far as I can recall Lindsey got three of the original Model 1 guitars between 1979 and 1981. These were complemented by another two around 1997. One of these was replaced in 2003 and in 2004 Lindsey chose another one from a set of three Rick offered him.
Rick met Lindsey initially during the Rumours recordings when he worked for Alembic (John McVie used their Basses), Lindsey needed a guitar that would cut through the sound of the band. They were so loud and Lindsey's Les Paul Custom was getting somewhat lost in the sound. Rick set about designing a guitar that would give more clarity but with the same amount of depth as the Les Paul and Lindsey got the Model 1 around the time of the Tusk recordings and used it on the subsequent tour.
Lindsey uses a basic Model 1, no tone chambers to save weight, he has a full solid mahogany body on his which gives his distinctive thicker tone. The guitar controls consist of a master volume knob, a passive tone control knob (which lifts up to split the pickup coils to give a cleaner "Strat" type sound), a flick switch to activate the parametric equaliser (which basically changes the sound of the guitar), a sweep control knob for the equaliser and finally a 12db cut/boost knob..
The type of Model 1 Lindsey uses is a Model 1-CLB. Although I myself have a Model 1-CLBP which is basically the same but with a Piezo and blender knob to give the guitar an acoustic tone too which extends the tonal possibilities further.
Not sure what Rick's current list price is for a standard Model 1, haven't spoken to him for about a year but you would probably be looking around the $4500-$5000 area. Unless you wanted a customised version which of course would cost more.
Check out www.renaissanceguitars.com for more details.. You can email Rick directly from the site too..

What he said...
AND...
Lindsey's Les Paul's design (not so much "sound") didn't really lend itself to his fingerpicking style. The Model 1's design was more condusive to being played fingerstyle. Plus, with the onboard parametric EQ, Lindsey had more tonal variations at his command. He could get his LP tone and with a sweep of the EQ, he could make it sound like a Fender Telecaster. Also, he could crank up the gain on the EQ for a simple overdriven sound that eliminated the use of footpedals (at least for THAT tone...he has footpedals for other effects).
From the February 1979 issue of Rolling Stone magazine (via Les' Madness Fades site):
Before I joined Fleetwood Mac, I used a Fender Telecaster because it suited by finger-picking style. I wanted to use a Fender onstage when we first started playing live, but it didn’t fit into the texture of the piano sounds Christine [McVie] was getting, so I switched to a Gibson Les Paul. While a Telecaster sounds great from three feet away, the Les Paul sounds beefier to anyone sitting in the back of the hall.
And from the September 1997 issue of Guitar World (also via Les' Madness Fades site):
It was while Fleetwood Mac were recording Tusk that Rick brought the plans for the first one [Turner Model 1] down to the Village. Rick had worked for Alembic before then, but all the Alembic designs he brought me seemed too sterile. They had too much parametric EQ and were always heavy and didn't seem to me to play very nicely. So I told Rick, “Try to make me a guitar somewhere between those Alembics and the Les Paul I'm using.” He came up with a simpler design and brought those down while we were recording Tusk. I started using them on stage after the Tusk album was out. They were really suited to my style, because they had a little cleaner, more even sound than the Les Paul. A little more mature sound, if you will; more clearly articulated. It had tonal elements that I'd been missing ever since my Fender days.

Rick Turner used to work for Alembic making basses and guitars I believe. From what I remember he met Lindsey thru a friend, and Lindsey had asked him to create a guitar for him...a cross between a "Les Paul and an acoustic guitar" and Rick took it from there.
I dont think Rick has ever been in a band, but he does play guitar. I had a long chat with him on the phone about 2 yrs ago when I was considering buying one of his custom Model 1's...

Yeah I have played one before. They are amazing...it played like a dream. I have been wanting one for some time, but havent been able to set aside that much cash. Rick Turner is pretty good about consignment though...he told me iif I put $500 down then I could pay him monthly payments of $200 until I paid the guitar off. Although, the need for a new car wa7.s more pressing...but eventually I will get one. I think I'd rather have an older model though...maybe one from 1992-97.

Its called a sunburst finish. Rick can custom any top you want when he makes you a model one. I actually was thinking about getting an all-white top on it like the Les Paul customs.

I'd thought about an all-black one with a white pickup & tailpiece. Rick never responded to my post at the Renaissance message board when I asked him if he made white or cream colored pickups.

The model 1 is quite a small bodied guitar anyway, it is a very nice instrument. I've played 3 Model 1's (well, more if you kind of count Lindsey's from Earls Court and Manchester that I strummed), and Ian Morton, the UK distributor gave me the choice of two instruments when I purchased mine.
They have a great sound and the Model 1 is a very unique instrument but I tend to prefer guitars built by John Suhr personally because the feel, playability and sound suit my style more..
If you live in the States, I would recommend dealing with Rick personally. He can sort you out for sure..

One thing to note about the Turner is Lindsey does not use it too often in the studio. Strats and Teles seem to be his electrics of choice when recording. I am sure their are examples of where he used the Turner in studio, but he puts down most of the electric parts with his collection of Fenders.

True! And, as on "Oh Diane", an "f-hole" Gretch.
That's the beauty of the M1. It can recreate for stage the tonality of a wide variety of guitars without having to change guitars every song (ala Tom Petty & Mike Campbell).

I can play either way; it really depends on the material...I prefer a pick though. It took me a while to get the hang of using a pick on the Turner. Like I was committing some cardinal sin by using one. But, then I thought, "Hey, this is MY guitar, not Lindsey's, I'll play it how I want to"; as if there was some "Law Of The Turner" that I HAD to change 30 years of how I played because of the TYPE of guitar I was playing? No way.

Well maybe there IS a bit of an understated law about playing the Turners with no pick. Being that I play without a pick it wouldnt be that hard for me. I actually have a hard time playing with a pick, and it feels weird to me.

I run it through an old beat-up tweed Fender Blues DeVille 410, overdrive channel...gain cranked, bass on 9, midrange on 10, treble on 5 (they go to 12!!), master volume rarely gets above 3; then run a Fender SFX Satellite off the FX loop (slight slap echo with reverb)...no foot pedals...only thing between the guitar & amp is a Boss TU-12 tuner. That gives me a great basic tone that I can go either clean or really crunch depending on the gain of the Turner's EQ.

Well, I don't really. Just that I'm in a band that has THREE guitarists...the other two are really "mid heavy", so to "blend" with them, I turn up the mids. Otherwise, it would wreak havoc with the other two guitarists that my guitar would cut through the mix even while playing rhythm. So, instead of them backing off the mids (like I've suggested 100's of times), they'd just turn up the volume. Then it becomes "volume war MCMXXX"...one guy turns up, then the next guy turns up, then someone says they can't hear ME, so I should turn up...then of course the bass player has to turn up...then the vocals & drummer get drowned out, the PA gets turned up, the monitors start feeding back, the bar manager gets pissed because we're too loud and the waitress can't hear the drink orders. Of course, all this happens once the drinks have started arriving on stage and being consumed. When we're all sober, the mix is f-ing phenomenal.

OH god I'd LOVE to play in a band. I think I could get addicted to volume war MCMXXX. Sounds totally wicked.

Dude...thats AWESOME Chili. The last time we did I'm So Afraid live, Scott the drummer gave me an 'eat ****' look after the 2nd verse, because I had the overdrive pedal up too high on the part where the final solo kicks in! Because I had already started playing so I couldnt bend down and turn it down. Ah well...everyone went nuts at the end anyways.

I dont think I have "So Afraid" recorded on anything. Maybe steph filmed it at one of our shows...but nothing on CD or anything like that. I will have to start recording more stuff and find a way for you guys to see it. BUT...we rarely do Mac songs. Most people dont recognize them and it frustrates me.

I wonder... is the model 1 without the piezo pickup & blending electronics also versatile ? or can you get to lindsey's sound (and others) also WITH the P.P. & B.E. ?
thx, would someone please tell me which is the best model to go anywhere (from LB to Santana and more...)

The Piezo and blender make no difference to the existing tones, they merely add to them..
If you want a Model 1 to get Lindsey's sound you need three things..
Firstly you need to specify no tone chambers in the guitar.. Lindsey's Model 1's are all solid body Honduras mahogany. Secondly you need the high gain pickup, this is the one with the black plastic cover and not the black chrome covered one. Thirdly you need Lindsey's fingers. I fear this is the most difficult thing to get!
What you will find with the piezo and blending controls is a whole new world of extra tones. Basically you can get a very good take on an acoustic tone with the piezo and then blend this in with the humbucker, then you have the range of possibilities with the volume, tone control, coil split and the parametric sweep too.. It's a much better guitar with the option in terms of tonal range.. But if you want LB's spec it's solid body, high gain pickup, no piezo/blender. If you want it to look like most of his early ones ask Rick for a light stain. If you want it to look modern (i.e. the one he used for World Turning on the SYW tour) then ask for red mahogany...
I've actually got mine out this week, dusted it off and restrung it in a lower gauge. (I now use D'Addario .010-.046 strings, Lindsey uses .010-.046 Ernie Ball strings and Rick strings and advises .011-.052 Thomastik Infeld strings). I have a feeling I'm going to be using it a lot more in the coming months and although I have other guitars that can do the job equally or better than the Model 1, none of them can do everything in one guitar like this can and still sound really good.. I do need to get in touch with Rick to get some mods done soon though..

Thank you very much :wavey: so, they both come close because even the LB model 1 has a wide variety of tones ? (exactly the same is, I think, almost impossible)

Mine doesn't have the piezo...I've had it for 4-1/2 years and I'm STILL finding new tonal qualites. Just the variations with the semi-parametric EQ took me years to master...I'm just NOW getting around to experimenting with the rotating pickup angles.

I see one of the "junior" models on ebay right now for $1600...not a bad price at all. But I have a feeling the 1C would be a more enjoyable model what with the parametric EQ and all, but I dont think Lindsey really ever uses that.

I just need to get THAT close to his sound (and not only his of course, but mainly  ) and I'm afraid that my dream model 1 isn't gonna be cheap... But on the other hand: you have something special with this one, something you can't say 'bout a gibson, not that those are bad guitars, but I can't think of anybody with a Rick Turner Model 1 here in belgium...

Yeah I've never known anyone here that has owned one. Other than Chili...but I've never seen anybody in a band or known anyone that has it. I am possibly going to have one by the end of this year. There is a guy who offered me a 1996 model on ebay for $2500 and its perfectly mint. I think I'd rather have an "older" model rather than the current ones anyhow. I like the older headstock logo and such.

Question: what effects does LB use ?

I'm not a big enough Buckingham fan to know his full setup (Seteca might have a better idea on this) but he does use a Boss SD-1 Overdrive and a Boss DD-5 Digital Delay...

Question: what effects does LB use ?
Boss SD1 pedal
Boss DD5 pedal
Mesa Boogie Tremoverb amp heads
HiWatt cabs
I think a lot of his sound is also controlled from the mixing board. But generally it's all very clean.

Thx once again MLD :) (BTW, I like lots of different guitarists, the ones I like the most all use very little effects, like Angus Young)

LB's FX set-up is not as simple as he makes out in interviews...
The DD-3 (not DD-5) delay pedal is modified, as is the SD-1 (noise-reduced). These are part of a parallel switching system (i.e. the guitar signal does not run directly through them and into amps) and so can be easily adjusted offstage by sound engineers. These two are powered by a Voodoo Labs (original) Pedal Power unit.
His guitars run through a variety of buffered D.I.'s and offstage outboard gear, including tuners, dbx gates, compressors, and Lexicon digital delay and reverb units.
He also has a custom A/B channel switching pedal which selects between clean and high gain channels of the Mesa preamps. (Green for clean, red for gain). This is usually controlled offstage by sound engineers.
The idea behind this set-up is to produce excellent sound direct through the P.A. system. (You will notice that the majority of the cabs and speakers behind him are not mic'd, and some of them aren't even active. They're there to make the set look as big as possible.)
Hope this info. helps out!:)
