View Full Version : Does Stevie influence other music you buy?

This is interesting - I find the more I listen to Stevie and learn about her music, the more I'm branching out into other bands. I bought a Tom Petty CD today, have a new interest in Bonnie Raitt since "Circle Dance," and now I'm going to purchase an LZ album after she's been covering their song.

So it looks like Stevie has really introduced me to a lot of good music out there, aside from her own work, because if you asked me two years ago if I had any interest in the above acts (except Bonnie Raitt - I liked a few of her songs), I would've shrunk in horror, thinking they were old people's music - no offense!

What about you? Has she had the same affect?

PS...how great would a Bonnie Raitt/Stevie tour be? I'd love to see those two together!

I shudder at the thought.

I don't think Stevie or the Mac influence the music I buy and listen to, I just buy what I like upon hearing it. I've always loved Bonnie Raitt, so I'm still psyched that she's singing Circle Dance, especially since it's one of my favorite Bonnie tunes.

I've purchased some Sheryl Crow CDs. That's about it....

I shudder at the thought.

Dissention - why don't you think it'd work? Two big egos, or just too dull since a lot of Bonnie's songs are slower? Maybe too much estrogen in the room - LOL?

No, Stevie nor anyone in Fleetwood Mac influence my music purchases...Also Empty-Vee & VH-Dumb1 never have or will influence my purchases (You can also add radio to another medium that does not affect or influence me).

Two completely different kinds of performers, for one. Bonnie is as laid back and chill as they come, Stevie is there to put on a theatrical show. To hear the likes of Give It Up or Let Me Go followed by Gold Dust Woman would make me gag. And I cannot, CANNOT picture the amazing slide guitar player that Bonnie Raitt is sharing the stage and musical duties with someone like Carlos Rios or one of Stevie's other hired hands. It would be a mess and I would weep for Bonnie.

I see your point, Dissention. A clash of Stevie's band and Bonnie could be a disaster. Never thought of that one.

Just to make one point clear so you don't think I'm a drone groupie follower! I'm not buying the music because Stevie likes it; I'm getting into it because these aren't bands/musicians that interested me before, so a lot of the songs I'm hearing for the first time.

I became a big Zevon fan after discovering Mohammed's Radio years ago.
Other than that, probably not. I mean, otherwise I'd be listening to Stevie & buying that Vanessa Carlton CD, right?

I dont own everything related to Fleetwood Mac...Doubt I would purchase the items I am lacking at this moment since my current listening taste in music lies elsewhere, And thus I would be wasting my $$$$.

Ahhh, six degrees from Fleetwood Mac would be an expensive venture in terms of collections.

it does affect what i buy i'd say, cuz if i hear of an artist/band that stevie is currently liking or listening to, i will give them a try~ i started listening to the pretenders constantly after i saw stevie w/ chrissie hynde at the rock-n-roll hall of fame inductions~ it's funny i never thought about this, but stevie definitely influences what i listen to and buy~

Seeing Sheryl with Stevie on the TISL tour got me into Sheryl. Before that I wouldn't have even thought of listening to Sheryl. I already liked Tom Petty before Stevie but I got a lot more into him after listening to Stevie. I also like listening to Warren Zevon thanks to Stevie.

I've listened to Stevie for a good 30 years now and probably almost daily for about 20 of those 30.
I find myself looking for different types of music to listen to when I'm not listening to Stevie.
I remember listening to Time (I listened to it once, ever) and hearing a song by Bekka where it sounded to me like they were trying to mix her voice to sound like Stevie's. This isn't a slam on Bekka or anything but at that moment I realized that I didn't want to seek out anyone who tried to resemble Stevie musically. I guess that's because she is so unique to me and many of her songs are very personal to me. Sure there are other artists who have songs that mean a lot to me (Elton John's Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding for instance) but none of them on the same scale as Stevie.

First off, let me say - I've seen Bonnie Raitt in concert. I've seen Stevie in concert. Both fabulous. Both unbelievable talents. Don't fit the same bill.

Does Stevie influence what I listen to? Well, I'm not sure I ever would have listened to John Stewart, Walter Egan, Sandy Stewart (ugh - not a fan), Dane Donohue (ditto), Todd Rundgren, Warren Zevon, etc, if Stevie hadn't been singing with them... :) So, absolutely, in that way - if she has sung with someone, I want to hear it. And loving her work with Tom Petty certainly led me to hear more of his stuff. Ditto John Stewart. And I love them both.

And I guess that if I saw an interview with her, and she listed her top three favourite artists and I had never heard them - sure, I'd probably check them out for curiosity's sake. I mean, I love and adore the music Stevie makes - it would follow I may like what she likes to listen to. However, if I hated a certain band, and Stevie said she loved them, I certainly wouldn't try to love them. I like Vanessa Carlton okay (I like that White Houses song), but I'd never go buy her album. Even though Stevie clearly thinks a lot of her.

Not really. Most of my purchases consist of hard rock/ heavy metal.

Stevie will always be my #1 though.

Let's see... I was already into Tom Petty, the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac before becoming a Stevie fan. Still not that into Sheryl. I DID go out and buy a used copy of In Thru the Out Door (LZ) because all this talk made me realize I STILL didn't have any LZ on CD... so I took care of that just a little, for now. I'll never get into Bonnie Raitt. Can't think of any more right now. If anything, FM and all their incarnations have influenced my musical tastes more than Stevie has.

For your next LZ purchase, I highly recommend Physical Graffiti. Next to Stevie and FM, I own more LZ albums/cds than any other band.

Not really. I've always listen to many genres from many different artists and that remained the same. This year she definitely made me appreciate more The Eagles and Don Henley but not that much to buy their albums.

Definitely! That album, more than any other, defined by high school years. After that will be II, Houses of the Holy, I, IV and I'll be done.

Heard a little Emerson, Lake and Palmer on the radio today... there's another good band. Sigh... so much good old music.

I bought C'MON C'MON Sheryl Crow cus Stevie did back up on Diamond Road ended up liking it alright...I would have never listened to Warran Zevon if it weren't for Stevie ( I love his stuff) I pay more attention to the Beach Boys cus of Lindsey..hmmm I might buy Venessa new cd, she really impressed me at Blossom, and I want Stevie to see Venessa's album sales go up so she can be proud of us, silly I know but what can I say :o I bought Shawn Colvins cd when she mentioned it on her on her website so yeah I would say Stevie influences my music purchases. ;)

I have most of the other FM artists solo stuff - including the latest from Mick Fleetwood - which is brilliant, one of my faves...
For the most part, my choice goes from Stevie to Springsteen to Youssou N'Dour, Wasis Diop (a voice to die for) and my latest all-time bests: Zucchero and Freshlyground....

No, Stevie does not at all influence the kind of music I listen to. I really like a lot of hip hop as well as industrial/goth music and that is as far from Stevie as it gets. I will however listen to songs Stevie duets on with other artists but I could not see myself going out and buying their albums just because they have worked with her.

Amen...my bank account is already a victim.

And, not just with Fleetwood Mac...

...add Allman Bros Band, Eric Clapton, Beatles, Rolling Stones & Miles Davis to that, too. Along with the Grateful Dead, the whole Buffalo Springfield/Byrds family trees, as well.

Well, I'd have to say I buy music that I feel is similar to Stevie's. Full of passion and depth. But that's subjective of course

When reading Stevie's journal entries after 9/11 via the Nickfix (thank you, John!), I was especially intrigued about this entry:

Sept. 11, 2001
11:30 a.m.
We got into New York via private jet at 2 o’clock this morning, coming into New York from Toronto, Canada. I have been listening to Shawn Colvin’s song, Another Plane Went Down, from her new album, A Whole New You, all the way here while trying to compose a letter to Gladys Knight about Aaliyah, her niece; about my dream. Airports, planes everywhere, music, music, tears in my eyes, Sulamith (my yorkie) was upset all the way from Canada, psychic, dreamlike, flying, flying, flying.

Of course, I had to run out and buy the Shawn Colvin CD - which is incredible by the way, never mind that she's from Texas and that my friend Charlie Sexton played on it - and I was totally taken away by the song "Another Plane Went Down". And it has become one of my all time favorite songs.

So, yes, some of my music IS influenced by Stevie...I love to hear what inspires her as she has so heavily inspired me for all these many years...

LOL, I actually feel guilty when I listen to other music. Like I'm some kind of traitor or something. But I'm sure Stevie would want us to branch out and listen to others' work, right? Right? http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/guy_smiley705/Favorites/Faves2/worry.gif

Actually, she does... After she toured with Don Henley I found myself liking him and The Eagles a lot more. After seeing Vanessa when I went to see Stevie, I love her a lot now I just bought her CD and I really love it! :)
