I am watching "What's Love Got to Do With It" -

I think when you add them up and put them all together - Tina is the best for emotion ever.

I think Stevie is one of the best ever - top five in fact, esp. after hearing Circle Dance solo - sheebus.

So - here is my list - which could change

Tina

Bonnie Raitt - because she is off key is the reason - ya know what I mean

Stevie - Sable on Blonde and Gypsy - no one really comes close

Natalie Merchant - Verdi Cries few can touch that

Blondie - not a lot to work with but what she does with it

Ann Wilson - five notes above the measure and she's over 50

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

But they can be interchangeable!

Please tell me your's

Natalie Merchant - Verdi Cries few can touch that

Oh, God. That song makes me weep.

Also great for emotion:

Jann Arden - Cherry Popsicle and I Would Die For You

Sarah McLachlan, especially her older stuff - like her first 2 albums

Dido: White Flag

I will think of more... I listen to more female singers than male. I guess I just relate to what they're singing about more often... And I love when a song really aches...

On Edit: Of course, it goes without saying that Stevie Nicks is and always will be my number one!!

Christ, my list is almost the same.

In no particular order:

Bette Midler
Deborah Harry
Aimee Mann
Bonnie Raitt
Shirley Manson
Stevie

Five is a bit too restrictive, though, so I'll add:

Annie Ross
Sheryl Crow
Tina Turner
Ann Wilson
Billie Holiday
Joan Baez
Etta James

Oh, God. That song makes me weep.

. . .

I sang it to my ex while playing the 1930's Steinway M they bought for me because it was the color of my eyes - followed by Silver Springs circa 1997 - like the day after we broke and in front of all of our friends -- tears do not really describe it

Billie HolidayShe gives me chills. Love her rendition of "When Your Lover Has Gone."

Of course I'm going to say Celine Dion, en francais en particulier
Stevie Nicks
Christine McVie (love the way her voice sounds on ITM)
Sarah Brightman (especially the way she does "The Music of the Night")
Shakira (I prefer her in native tongue like Celine, and she's even better live)
Ani DiFranco (I can think of only a few of her songs that aren't perfectly emotive)
PJ Harvey (I'm a new fan of hers but I love what she does in her song "Rid of Me"
Donna Lewis (very Cyndi Lauper-esque much of the time)
Reba McEntire (Blows. Me. Away. again and again...and I love it when she turns a one-syllable word into a ten-syllable one)
Patty Loveless (pretty much like Reba sans the embellishments)
Kim Richey (like the other two country divas but with a more campy, alternative thing going on)
Matraca Berg (just for her heart-wrenching version of "Lying to the Moon")
Carly Simon (so smooth)

Oh, I couldn't agree more!! I was just talking to someone today about this - when Celine sings in French, it is nothing like her English stuff. I saw her about 10 years ago in Montreal - was given the tix, otherwise never would have gone - and she was unbelievable. The setlist was about 50-50 French and English, but she only spoke French throughout the show, and it was just such a different experience. I also find the words to her French songs more emotional and touching. (She's also my homie, and I interviewed her mom after Celine won her Oscar, so I feel a special protectiveness about Celine!!) :o

Another favorite of mine, and someone who doesn't get nearly as much recognition as she deserves. "Back When We Were Beautiful" just kills me.I think I've heard that song before but don't remember it well. What I've heard of her renditions of songs that she's written that were performed by and sometimes made famous by more popular singers has shown that she puts more emotion into them. I think her version of "Lying to the Moon" is superior to Trisha Yearwood's. And I found her video for "Back in the Saddle" irresistable the few times I actually saw it on country TV stations.

That is so very cool that you got to interview her mom. You're so right about the French music; the lyrics and the whole feel of the songs are so dramatically different. I'm fond of some of her English songs too (love most of the Falling Into You album) but whenever people ask me what my fave Celine songs are, I always come up with the French ones.

I am so mad at Carly. She recorded a ****ing covers album a la Rod Stewart! What is she smoking? I love her to death and own every one of her albums, but that's one that I will not be purchasing.

Is that a new one? I just got a new hits one earlier this year. I thought she had an album of film noir torch song covers years ago.

I liked Film Noir (save that awful track with Travolta  ), but this new one, Moonlight Serenade, sounds truly wretched. I saw a commercial for it about an hour ago and my jaw dropped.

Don't know the Travolta song. I haven't gotten over the cheese of that Twist Of Fate video with him & Olivia Newton-John.
Carly's music is best when it's not overdone.

Hey, we've all admitted some crap tonight. I just admitted i liked that Baby Come And Get It song from the Pointer Sisters - smuttiest song ever. Wasn't there a video to it or is it just my perverted imagination?
(For the record, I also liked Automatic, but I don't think that's as embarrassing.)

I saw one of the PS in a bar in New Orleans about a year or two ago and she was so strung out she couldn't sing - she was arrested shortly thereafter - what a shame because they were so good IMO.

I always liked Anita. Last I saw they all looked like hell.

I think you're talking about June. She had a serious drug problem in the 80's. I remember watching her perform then and thinking "She's high."

I LOVE her - everytime I hear Rapture (the album and song) I am immediately transported to New Orleans in like 1987 when all of my friends were still alive, I was young and gorgeous, life had little cares, and I was so completely happy. God shine His love on that woman for that!

I totally forgot about Nico! I can't believe that. I LOVE her voice. Also, Exene Cervenka. I fail. -_-

Yeah Nico...never heard a voice like hers in my life. She is amazing. I love her music and I find her entire persona so fascinating.

Polly Jean Harvey is my favorite female artist ever (thus the avatar pic). She has an unlimited range of emotion, and she's so raw and passionate in so many of her songs. Not to mention prolific. Extremely prolific and a brilliant, brilliant songwriter.

I looked through all these pages and am very saddened that Laura Nyro was never mentioned (as far as I could see). Her voice was absolutely breathtaking. She wrote gorgeous music and was such a fantastically underrated artist. I remember reading she was booed off stage at the Monterey Pop Festival for wearing angel wings during her performance, but Miles Davis somehow got ticked off because she apparantly upstaged him at that (or some other) show. Her music is sooooo beautiful and soooo emotional.

I love a lot of the artists already mentioned, though. Especially Etta.

Her live album from 2001 (Burnin' Down the House) is genius. So sexy. Great setlist, she even performs a few Talking Heads tunes. I got to see her live a few years ago and she was amazing.
