View Full Version : What's up with all the Sheryl Crow hating?

I just have to ask about this...

Ever since TISL was released, I have rarely heard anyone say anything complimentary about Miss Crow, as far as her work with Miss Nicks is concerned. No one has really ever given any reasons why they detest her work on TISL as much as they do. I see lots of snark....but nothing specific, or rather, nothing that can be considered factual or accurate.

Now, please understand, I am not a big fan of Miss Crow. I own none of her albums, 'cept the Live in Central Park one, which I bought purely for Stevie's performance of Gold Dust Woman. So I am not approaching this from the angle of the slighted Sheryl Crow fan....far from it.

I find it curious that so many people are always dissing the TISL versions of Candlebright, Sorcerer, in addition to If You Ever Did Believe. All three produced by Sheryl, and feature her guitar work and backing vocals. People say they cringe when they hear Sheryl's backing vocals. Why? Does she REALLY sound THAT horrible? Did she really do such an injustice to these songs?

I think all three are great. They sound more like Stevie's original demos than almost all of her other songs that she has ever released. Stevie seems pleased by this....so why is it so bad?

The only valid, honest excuse I have ever heard for the dislike of Sheryl's work on these songs is that 'they should have been done with Lindsey.' Usually, this opinion is expressed when discussing Sorcerer. However, I have to counter that with my own statement that Lindsey had 26 years to do these songs with Stevie. It never happened, and was never likely to happen anyway. So what's the problem with Sheryl working on them? Sheryl idolizes Stevie, and did some damn good work, keeping true to Stevie's originality.

I think the vocal on Sorcerer is incredible. Stevie sounds fresh and lively, and no other producer between 1979 and 2001 was able to coax that lovely falsetto out of Stevie....I'm referring to the high notes at the end of the lines in Sorcerer. Sheryl did it! And she seems universally despised for it, from one end of Stevie fandom, all the way to the other end...

Lastly, there's the song "It's Only Love". Alot of people dislike it for it's sappy lyrics....other people detest it because Sheryl wrote it. Is it really worse than any other songs that Stevie sang, yet which were written by someone else....like Cry Wolf....or Docklands?

The reason I'm starting this topic is not to criticize anyone's opinion of Sheryl. After all, you're entitled to it. I just want to understand the truth behind the intense dislike of Sheryl's involvement with TISL and the Practical Magic soundtrack. Someone, please explain it to me. Did she knock you down when crossing the street? Did she tip over your cradle when you were a baby? Did she say something about you that was hurtful, and untrue? Did she steal from you? And please don't offer reasons like "Sheryl sucks", because there really is no truth to that - except in your own mind. Her record sales and ever increasing popularity clearly render that argument invalid.

So what is it? Enlighten me....

Well, let me be the first to say it:

I LOVE AND ADORE SHERYL CROW.

She's one of very few artists from the last 15 years who has proven to be truly talented and remarkable. She writes killer songs with great observations of society and biting lyrics, she's got a laid back attitude that is incredibly alluring, and she harkens back to the days when rock and roll was worth listening to.

I have no idea why people don't like her around here. Maybe they see her as stepping on Stevie's toes and taking some of the spotlight away from her, I don't know, but seeing her on the TISL was one of the biggest highlights for me. It's Only Love is also one of the best cuts on TISL and I like her production the album, especially in contrast to Shanks and the awful Marchand. I love her.

I actually like Sheryl. However, I never liked her until I saw her perform with Stevie on the TISL tour. After that, I bought her albums and generally enjoy the music on them. I even saw her in concert but I thought her show was quite boring. I don't mind Sheryl's collaborations with Stevie and I think it perhaps helped Stevie's TISL album because Sheryl was pretty popular at the time so I think it made Stevie seem a little more hip and in.

Strangley enough, I was/am a Sheryl Crow fan. I've got all her CDs and I've seen her live a couple of times. I think she's really talented - when she plays and sings and produces her own damned stuff. I loved her first album, and then got through a horribly sad break up only by listening to "Gotta Get Over You" and a couple other tracks on her most recent CD.

That being said... I hate what she did to all the tracks she produced on TISL. Too glossy, too poppy, too fabricated. It hurts my heart to think of what Lindsey could have done with those songs... :distress:

I really like about 3/4 of Sheryl's music. I can pass on a couple of her most popular songs. I own the greatest hits album, Central Park, & C'mon C'mon.
I think Stevie gives a great vocal on It's Only Love. That's what makes the song for me.
As for songs that Sheryl has produced for Stevie, I really like them, but there is a missing element. It's most noticeable on Sorcerer and If You Ever Did Believe. It's like the songs are missing a beat or something. I like them, but like I said, something small is missing from the final product, something with the pacing, for lack of a better word, IMO.
Also, I think Somebody Stand By Me is pretty flawless.

I agree. You can tell she has a love of music, the process. She's everywhere. She makes me think a bit of how Stevie was 25-plus years ago, popping up on others' albums and concerts, just loving the connections between artists that music & fame foster.

No one has really ever given any reasons why they detest her work on TISL as much as they do. I see lots of snark....but nothing specific, or rather, nothing that can be considered factual or accurate. How would an opinion be deemed factual or accurate?
The only valid, honest excuse I have ever heard for the dislike of Sheryl's work on these songs is that 'they should have been done with Lindsey.' Usually, this opinion is expressed when discussing Sorcerer. However, I have to counter that with my own statement that Lindsey had 26 years to do these songs with Stevie. It never happened, and was never likely to happen anyway. So what's the problem with Sheryl working on them? Sheryl idolizes Stevie, and did some damn good work, keeping true to Stevie's originality."Sorcerer" is okay, but I don't really dig it. I think Stevie's lead vocal is monotonous & a little toneless, but I prefer the sound of her voice in times past, so that's inevitable. Also, that repeating guitar motif has always struck my ear as unmusical or dissonant. Unfortunately, that thing runs all the way through the song & really sets the tone & creates the atmosphere. It generates some sort of harmonic pandemonium in my head. I've never been able to lock in to it.
I think the vocal on Sorcerer is incredible. Stevie sounds fresh and livelyFair enough. Different strokes for different folks & all that.
no other producer between 1979 and 2001 was able to coax that lovely falsetto out of Stevie.Oh, come now. First of all, it's illogical to attribute that to a producer's coaxing. It's the way the song goes -- why wouldn't Stevie have sung it that way? Secondly, Stevie has recorded equally pretty falsetto parts elsewhere for different producers. The tag out on "Wild Heart" produced by J. Iovine comes to mind.
Lastly, there's the song "It's Only Love".Well, I love that one. A great song that's subdued, that gives Stevie a chance to put a little head voice in (these days, she's usually all chest, which is why you hear so much snot rattling around in that cavity), & somebody added some great Claptonesque electric guitar.
The reason I'm starting this topic is not to criticize anyone's opinion of Sheryl.Sheryl's da bomb! She's pretty & talented, plays well, sings well & writes well. I love the job she did with "If You Ever Did Believe" & "Crystal." The latter features one of Benmont Tench's most beautiful B3 parts -- & that's saying something about this man's lengthy & extraordinary career.

Nothing but love for Sheryl from me. Jake has a point about those songs - there seems a bit of bass or meat missing from them. BUT, I think Stevie was lucky Sheryl had time to work with her. It's Only Love is one of my favorite songs on TISL, and one of Sheryl's best when she did it on C'mon C'mon. The strings at the end are genius and heartbreaking. I think Sheryl is the cat's pajamas. And she's hot.

Well I do not like any of Sheryl's collaborations with Stevie other than "If You Ever Did Beleive". The mix of Sorcerer(as much as i like the song) on TISL was weak, as were most of Sheryl's songs. Just not my style. But as far as Sheryl as performer- she is fantastic. Quite honestly, she had a great time in the Mansfield, Ma show in 2001, and was GREAT with the audience. I found a new respect for her as a performer that night. Especially since Stevie was not of particularly fine voice or mood that night. Pretty weak show that Sheryl saved in my opinion. I just don't like her production on TISL.

Any one remember her? (How I hope someone does ;)
I don't think her voice is all that interesting or good- in fact , I don't really care for her singing.
That said-
I really like what she writes- she has a large volume of work, I am especially fond of the darker moodier tunes, i.e. Weather Channel, Safe and Sound, to name a few...and actually to contradict myself, I DO like her vocals on those 2 songs...So I guess I am not making a very valid opinion!

Just something about her tiny, Texas , twang-y, y'all attitude that just "bugs" me.

I am a Sheryl Crow fan from the old school- back from when she was playing little clubs, etc. And I love the way she has evolved over the years to this big time rock n roller who can still put out a good rootsy groove combined with great pop hooks and soaring vocals. That being said, with the exception of "Sorcerer," I HATE HATE HATE Sheryl's contributions to TISL. Quite simply the woman has no business being behind the control board, as evidenced by her spotty 1996 self-produced follow-up to her stellar debut album produced by Bill Bottrell. Sheryl brings nothing inventive or musically interesting to the studio. For lack of a better term, her productions tend to sound "muddy" and unfocused with lots of superfluous elements. She sometimes just needs to realize that less is more. Also, the reason why "If You Ever Did Believe" turned out so great is because Sheryl (for once) had the good sense to record it just like the demo. Stevie really should have taken the producer credit for that- Sheryl merely recreated the arrangements note-for-note.

By contrast, John Shanks was/is a MASTER producer and makes the Sheryl productions sound amateurish by comparison. Even Stevie herself once said that Sheryl did not know what to do with a song like "Trouble in Shangri-la." He may have taken a lot of crap for making some of the songs sound a bit "metallic," but the thing I loved about his songs is that he pushed Stevie's sound into a fresh new arena while being mindful of her trademark ethereal darkness. But why oh why did he have to spoil the pot with "Every Day?" Argh! John, keep your day job as a producer, not a songwriter.

I thought it was "Fall From Grace" that Stevie said Sheryl didn't know what to do with. I remember this on the Rosie O'Donnell show. Rosie was raving about "Fall From Grace" and Stevie told her that it almost didn't make the album because Sheryl couldn't figure out what to do with it.

That said, I respect Sheryl's musical talent and dedication--and I own some of her clothes, , so I can't hate on her too much.

God I couldn't disagree more. I hope Stevie doesn't use Shanks in the future. Yep, let's polish all the tracks of any character, great idea. What a bad idea to add a pseudo-dance feel to Planets Of The Universe. Mutton dressed up as lamb indeed.

I don't hate her but I don't like what she did with "Fall From Grace." I pretty much don't like that song at all and she didn't help.

Also, when "Soak Up the Sun" was popular, I really wanted to gouge my eyes out and plug my ears every time the video came on. I just hate that song so much. Every once in awhile a popular song comes along that I detest passionately, and that was one of them. I'm not a fan of "All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun," either. I do have a fondness for "Every Day is a Winding Road," and I also like the way she sounds singing back-up on "Sorcerer," though. But in general, as someone else already said, I'm not a huge fan of her voice or her style.

Nothing against her personally, but I find listening to more than one song at a time can be monotonous - her voice is rather bland and lacking passion. HOWEVER, I love the duet she did with Pavarotti at War Child, where she brings out her opera training on "La Ci Darem La Mano" - wonderful stuff!

Well, let me be the first to say it:

I LOVE AND ADORE SHERYL CROW.

She writes killer songs with great observations of society and biting lyrics

Particularly All I Wanna Do and Soak Up The Sun. :woohoo:

Now I don't mind at all the occassional "just for fun"/meaningless lyric, but these two songs IMO are pieces of trash. I have, however, been informed here on previous occasions that Sheryl is capable of 1000% better (and I believe you, I still just haven't taken the time to discover these songs). I do like (but am not blown away by) some of her other singles. I think she is incrediblly talented vocally and admire that she can play a variety of instruments. Of some of the songs I know, I find myself feeling a deep contrast between the quality of her vocals and lyrics.

Reasons i dislike Ms. Crow:

Chicago, 2001, TISL tour... Ms Crow. is standing right in front of the stage during the opening act's performance.. about 6 or 7 people call out to her to get her attention.. Ms. Crow doesn't look over once, nor does she smile.. she just pretends like she doesn't hear anybody (which she clearly does)... 20 minutes later, she joins Stevie on stage and declares "Stevie Nicks fans are the greatest fans on the planet!!" Well, Ms Crow, if we are the greatest fans on the planet, then why did you snub 7 of us just 20 minutes ago??

Reason #2... Ms. Crow writes a song called "It's Only Love" for Stevie.. Stevie records it and puts it on her solo album... so Stevie then returns the favor and writes a song for Sheryl... and what does Ms. Crow do?? instead of putting it on her own solo record, she releases "You're Not The One" as some obscure german import B-side... and not only that, she then re-records "It's Only Love" for herself and puts THAT on her album instead... Ms. Crow, by re-recording a song you write for someone else, you take away the sweetness of doing it in the first place... Was "It's Only Love" REALLY written for Stevie??

i could go on... but those are the main reasons...

Another favorite of mine on Cmon Cmon is "Safe and Sound." Especially watching that live on her latest concert DVD, she sounds amazing..hits every note. She really has an incredible voice when she uses it

Chris

I LOVE that song! The first time I heard it was when she did it live for that 9/11 concert. Very poignant lyrics, and strikingly appropriate, made me bawl like a baby!!

Me too. Safe & Sound was the reason I went to see her on that tour (I'm glad I did, it ended up being worth it for the rest of the set too  ). Now that the novelty of C'mon C'mon has worn off I actually think it's her worst album, but that song is brilliant.

EveryHour, her singles are usually the most radio-friendly and not necessarily her best writing (i.e. Soak Up The Sun - blech). If you want to give her a chance, definitely check out the self-titled or Globe Sessions cds!

Perfectly stated. Exactly what he said. I love Sheryl, thanks in large part to her collaborations with Stevie... that's really what introduced me to her and compelled me to check out her work.

I loved how she loosened Stevie up onstage. She was so nervous and kind of out of it, but once Sheryl joined her, she was a different person. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to another Sheryl/Stevie tour, or an album in the tradition of Harris/Parton/Ronstadt.

It's great to read everyone's comments, and thank you for your responses. I guess the people who don't like her will post later - 'cause they're around here somewhere. :p

I said her harmonies with Stevie on Sorcerer make me cringe...do you want me to respond? I am used to Sorcerer with Lindsey. I do not like Sheryl's voice WITH Stevie at all. Its just my opinion....Stevie sounds fantastic with Lindsey on Sorcerer and Candlebright and I do not like how it sounds with Sheryl Crow. It is my opinion and there is no "accurate or factual" basis for my opinion. I like "It's Only Love" and I think Sheryl is a cool chick with a great voice but I do not like that she had to sing harmony with her on Sorcerer...especially when I had to see it live. I like Sheryl, just not her voice blended with Stevie's. Sheryl may have inspired Stevie to use difference parts of her voice but other producers have done that as well including Jimmy Iovine. Lindsey also gives her more confidence vocally. I prefer Lindsey's production of most of Stevie's songs...I think he knows her musical soul better than anyone else ever could begin to understand and instinctually knows what to do with her stuff. Sheryl does not strike me as understanding Stevie the same way. Her stuff is too poppy and sappy for someone like Stevie. Lindsey might take some risks and do some weird ****, like the vocals on Illume or the EFO voices but he stays true to the essence of her songs better than Sheryl, IMH and useless opinion.

I do like how she loosened Stevie up onstage too. Don did the same thing. I also liked when Sheryl sang her own songs. The gal is super talented and has a beautiful voice....on her own. Totally off topic, but I also loved how she overhauled Lance's car...it was hilarious and they totally shocked him.

how so?? Stevie wrote the song, she didn't play all the instruments on it or anything.. It was still Sheryl's song with her band and her playing on it... She could have made it fit just fine.. furthermore, the snubbery was more based on the fact that she gave a song to Stevie only to use it for herself.. very tacky... and then the song Stevie writes for her she doesn't use at all... Stevie could have easily replaced "It's Only Love" with "Thrown Down", "Not Make Believe" or "My Heart", but she chose to use "It's Only Love" (which in itself doesn't quite "fit" on TISL)

That may be true, but i doubt Sheryl had anything to do with it per se.. Stevie is always more loose when someone else is on stage with her, be it Sheryl or Don or Tom or whomever... i wouldn't exactly give Sheryl "credit" for Stevie's performance.. that's kinda stretching it...

I think It's Only Love fits perfectly on TISL, whereas You're Not the One stinks. It simply did not fit in on C'Mon C'Mon, it's too pedestrian and the sound of it would have stuck out horribly next to the likes of Lucky Kid, Abilene, and You're An Original. The fact is that she still released the damned thing. I'll never know why, but hey. Stevie is on a couple of songs on the album and that's enough; she wasn't exactly producing it like Sheryl did with her album.

As for her recording It's Only Love, I find it anything but tacky. Her version is so incredibly different from the one found on TISL that it's practically a different song.

Not to me. I think it's obvious that the two of them have a deep bond, personally and musically, and it comes out when they're together. I see a marked difference between seeing them together and seeing Stevie with others, but that's just me. They're just two chicks having fun. If you fill up once a week, as most do, with a 15 gallon tank at $1.50 a gallon - that is $22.50 a week. At $2.25 a gallon it is $33.75. That is a difference of $11.25. If $11.25 a week is going to break you, then you probably should not justify buying a $100 rock concert ticket

Crow do?? instead of putting it on her own solo record, she releases "You're Not The One" as some obscure german import B-side... and not only that, she then re-records "It's Only Love" for herself and puts THAT on her album instead... i could go on... but those are the main reasons...

In Sheryl's defense, she might have thought it rude to distract fans from the opening act.

Also, I thought I remember Sheryl saying that she decided to included It's Only Love on her own album only after it was clear that Stevie's label would not use it for a single. I think Sheryl took that as a bit of a snub, not that I mean to criticize anybody's decisions.

I like a lot Sheryl Crow, and think she did a wonderful work with TISL, she did an awesome job with BN demos, IMO and wrote for Stevie a truly great song. I also appreciate her as a solo artist. Moreover, her performance at MTV awards in 2002, singing "Safe And Sound" was really a poweful moment.

Also, when "Soak Up the Sun" was popular, I really wanted to gouge my eyes out and plug my ears every time the video came on.

Like I've said before, that song is oddly juxtaposed to a recent national tragedy. It's just weird timing in my mind and something about it wasn't "right". It grew on me though.

Particularly All I Wanna Do .

That song was more of a collaborative effort on the part of the "Tuesday Night Music Club." The lyrics are actually from a poem called Fun by Wyn Cooper.

You have to admit in retospect, the vocal on Leaving Las Vegas is horrific in comparison to what Sheryl's actually capable of.

A lot of that first album is rather horrific in retrospect. She blew me away with her follow-up in '96. A Change, Every Day Is A Winding Road, Love Is A Good Thing, If It Makes You Happy, Sweet Rosalyn, Redemption Day, Home, Hard To Make A Stand, Oh Marie, etc. That sucker is jaw-droppingly good and still holds up. It's her masterpiece, imo, which says a lot because Globe Sessions is amazing.

That never made sense to me either.

Also, I thought I remember Sheryl saying that she decided to included It's Only Love on her own album only after it was clear that Stevie's label would not use it for a single. I think Sheryl took that as a bit of a snub, not that I mean to criticize anybody's decisions.

She should have known It's Only Love was not single material. It's a ballad. Ms. Crow has very good ideas about what gets played on the radio.

Sorry, but I can't stand her. It has nothing to do with Lindsey-should-have-done-those-songs. I heard Soak Up The Sun today and was thinking about starting a thread about her. I know Stevie likes her and she's her little sister and all that, but she is no rockstar. She's pop and commercial all the way. Her videos are almost worse than her songs. Sorry if I'm offending, but she really is a little like nails down a chalkboard. Maybe I just don't like most sappy pop?

Not to say she doesn't have talent. She does. I just really don't like her.

Many of her songs definetely are pop, but really no more pop than many of Fleetwood Mac's hit songs..if you dig down deep into Sheryl's albums, past the radio stuff you will find some really deep and intriquing songs there..much more than just pop fluff

Well, Kelly, first of all, of course I wanted your response. I wouldn't have asked the questions I asked and presented them in the way I did if I didn't want your response, and the responses of others who detest Sheryl's work with Stevie. That was the whole point of this thread!

Second, I was mistaken to ask for 'accurate or factual' reasons, and you are not the only one who pointed this out to me - as there really is no such thing when it comes to opinions regarding art. My bad, I should know better.

Lastly, and again, this is directed at Kelly, I have to call you out on the 'useless opinion' remark. I didn't say that, and I never would. No one's opinion is useless, I was merely looking for something other than 'I hate Sheryl' or 'Sheryl sucks', and you rose to the challenge quite gracefully. Thank you for your response. :)

I don't, either. What in the world would she use Stevie for? She's already got a huge audience (including the youth audience) and sells millions more records.

Stevie has something that Ms. Crow will never ever have.. a loyal fanbase.. sure, she sells millions of records.. but Sheryl isn't selling out Madison Square Garden.. hell, she isnt even playing Madison Square Garden... There are people who buy records because they like the music and then there are true hardcore fans... I would suspect Sheryl was "using" Stevie to try to attract more of a loyal fanbase for herself... i don't see hundreds of websites dedicated to Ms. Crow, do you?? something must be missing there...

I would suggest that the people who post over on Sheryl's forum consider themselves a very loyal fanbase. I have met some of them and believe me they are very dedicated to her. it's not.. but when an artist can sell out most average size venues when they are not promoting a single thing and after not having a hit record in 20 years, i would venture to say their fanbase is pretty dedicated and loyal

Again, there is a distinct difference between the people who buy the records and the true dedicated fans... if Sheryl Crow had the fanbase that equalled the amount of records she sells, she would be playing 3 nights at MSG every single tour.. the fact is, that doesn't happen... Sheryl Crow could sell about the same amount of tickets to her shows in 2005 as Stevie could.. perhaps not even as many... so, for Stevie, who some believe to be a guy, and hasn't had a hit record for 20 years, to be able to sell out a venue the way Ms Crow can who is always on the charts and sells millions of records, something is wrong there... It means the people who buy Shery'ls records don't even care enough to see her Live...

heck.. probably half the people who see Stevie Live don't even have half her albums... it still does not stop the dedicated and loyal fans for continuing to go to her shows time and time again..

my point is, i would venture to assume that the only reason why Sheryl has as many as she does right now (albeit, it's not as many as one would expect), is because she is always on the radio and is a hitmaker... I would also add that Sheryl has a loyal fanbase also...sure it's not as built up, as connected and devoted as a whole as Stevie's is, but some of them would surprise you---she also does especially well in Europe.. She HAS played MSG many times, altho usually with a bunch of other ppl...

You might get the impression that Sheryl is stuck to playing 500 seater clubs, but that isnt the case--she plays those places because she likes to...I would love to see Sheryl in concert myself.

I also dont think you can safely say Stevie didnt benefit from Shery's musical friendship...MANY Sheryl fans bought TISL because of Sheryl's work on it.. Sheryl has also given Stevie lots of free press at times when she needed it (IE : When TISL was released) by constantly talking about their friendship in interviews..

Sheryl has very few peers of female rockers to have emerged in the last 10-15 years that have been able to sustain a consistently successful career .Where are some of her peers now ?Joan Osborne? Paula Cole? Tori Amos has been around a bit longer than Sheryl but her following dwindled to a strong cult quite a few years back.I don't buy for an instant that she was ever trying to ride Stevie's coat tails or acquire a loyal fan base from Stevie. This having been said Stevie is kind of unique in that she became a star in a different time and is the type of star that will most likley not be seen again. Her persona is something that belonged to a time that still had a patina of innocence about it .When people who were kids then as I was could actually believe that there was something magical about her.Sheryl does not have this mystique, maybe Tori does a little bit but not to the extent that Stevie did in those days.I'm still grateful I was around for that and that is why I remain a fan .

I think if Stevie catered more to her hardcore cultish fans and played smaller venues and mixed up the set list more as Tori does it would be apparent she has a similar base of fans as Tori.Stevie at the height of her fame (1976-1983) was bigger than Tori ever was, so she is also bringing in more casual boomer type fans who remember the hits of their youth by playing the same big hits in larger venues.

To compare Sheryl Crow to Britney Spears or Taylor Dayne is a complete crock of **** and you know it.

Evidently you have some issue with Sheryl, but she is a talented musician who plays many instruments, writes her own songs, and is capable of producing herself. She is in a completely different league than Britney or Taylor f*cking Dayne. She has scant company as far as talent, training, and skill in the current music industry. She will be around in 20 years, and will still be making good music. Keith Richards doesn't invite a hack to play onstage with him. Neither does Willie Nelson, Pavarotti or Stevie herself. In fact, Sheryl is a more skilled musician than Stevie could ever hope to be. Could Stevie ever have had the skill, training, ability, or discipline to sing an aria with Pavarotti ?

Does Sheryl have as powerful a stage presence and persona as Stevie ? No. Who does ? But she isn't going anywhere. She has got the goods, and will be around when all of her contemporaries are long gone.

In fact, Sheryl is a more skilled musician than Stevie could ever hope to be. Could Stevie ever have had the skill, training, ability, or discipline to sing an aria with Pavarotti ?

You ever hear Sheryl sing the national anthem?? i have and it wasn't pretty.. The girl can sing her songs just fine... but when it comes to singing other people's songs, she hasn't a clue what to do... perfect example: "Too far From Texas", TISL tour... she couldn't hold a candle to the kind of vocal Natalie Maines layed out on that song...

But she isn't going anywhere. She has got the goods, and will be around when all of her contemporaries are long gone.

as long as she keeps selling out the way Madonna and Britney do, she'll be just fine :xoxo:

Could have said the same thing about Stevie 20 years ago when she had hit songs.

Ever try singing it yourself ? It's a vocal acrobat's nightmare. I thought she did a decent job. And FYI Natalie had 30 takes in the studio. I love Natalie, but I know the engineer.

Selling out ? Neither of those girls can write a song to save their lives. It's the "bring me a song, I add two words, pay you 35k and get top billed cowriter credit" school of songwriting. Oldest trick in the "I want to be songwriter because I am famous" book of tricks. Call Sheryl a hack and a loser all you want. The facts will never bear you out.

Does it make you fall to your knees? Those songs kill me. I love S&S.

Almost. It's Only Love is breathtaking, definitely one of her best. And that finale to Safe and Sound is quite an achievement. I think my favorite songs from her would have to be Redemption Day and Member's Only. Redemption Day is just brilliant to me and Member's Only has me in stitches, especially the lines:

I'll have mine with blackstrap molasses
Cuz I can't taste it anymore

Riverwide knocks me out, too. She's one of the best that we've ever gotten.

I've been somewhat of a fan of Sheryl's since Woodstock '94, that was pretty much when she broke through. She looked fantastic and she was playing guitar and singing these amazing words. She really stood out for that and I really wanted her record after that and got it. And yes, I was actually there.

I think I have a recording of it somewhere, I should try to find it.

And she still came out sounding like the hogcaller she is. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard, only less appealing and desirable.

I have to agree. I think Sheryl is very skilled at what she does and has amazing musical talent and usually I "enjoy" listening to her; meaning I don't change the channel or station. Listening to her sing on Fall From Grace though ruined the song...it was like she couldn't find the harmony and I've also heard her sing the national anthem...yikes. I'm not trying to bash her because I think that she is a great musician and has lots of intelligent, interesting things to say, it is what it is. And, just because someone gets on stage with Pavarotti doesn't make them automatically skip 2 grades. I love Mariah Carey and I know a lot of people on these boards loathe her, BUT she sang with Pavarotti - does that necessarily mean they should change their opinions? Nope - opinions AND musical tastes are like a**holes, everyone has one.

Yep, you're right, but I've seen several of Sheryl's live performances and they all sound like she is off key. Now, I'm no musical genius but I know when something doesn't sound quite right.

I have 2 of Sheryl's CDs and I'd consider myself a fan of her studio work (she always writes such great lyrics too), but I gotta call a spade a spade - her live stuff never really impresses me.

same here.. i actually like "my favorite mistake", "first cut is the deepest", and a few others...

it's her personality and the choices she makes that i don't care for... also, i don't think she's a great singer, despite who she performs with...

I'm a big fan of Sheryl Crow. One of my earliest music video memories is watching All I Wanna Do. I own Tuesday Night Music Club and her Greatest Hits. She has been one of my favorite singers for as long as I can remember.

As for her work with Stevie, I have to say I really enjoy it all. If You Ever Did Believe, is one of my favorite Stevie songs. The songs Sheryl produced on TISl, IMO, are the strongest on the album.

Never will there be any Sheryl bashing from me...I think she rocks!

Since I started this thread, and read the earliest comments about Sheryl (particularly the comments from dissention) I have been listening to my only Sheryl CD rather often. I've probably heard it eight times in the last two days. It's her Live In Central Park album, guest starring many others.

Honestly, the performances are all amazing in my opinion. Sheryl and Chrissie's performance of If It Makes You Happy just blows me away! They sound really, really good together! I don't think Sheryl has a single bad moment anywhere on the album. Of course, I only have the radio to compare her to, since I have never seen her live.

On another note, Tori Amos is a favorite of mine. I had Little Earthquakes right after it's release, and have been glued to her ever since. Although I love all of her albums, Scarlett's Walk is my favorite. Does anyone else here have the Scarlet Stories CD that was issued on a limited basis? I'm sure that's probably a silly question, . I could listen to that woman talk all day. I have always hoped that her and Stevie will collaborate someday.

I asked Jana in her Q&A if Stevie liked Tori, and OF COURSE she didnt know--she's useless by the way, she answers everything as "i dont know"

ANYWAY, I loved at the Atlanta show she did Landslide and the drunk heckling lady who wouldnt stop the whole show was really at it during that song...and Tori stops LANDSLIDE and says "ok the montley crew show, is across the fu*king road!!" and everyone cheered and she started again lol

the funny thing is, even though they are depressing (some aren't), they have a way of connecting with you and making you feel better...even Tori has sad she plays Landslide when she's sad and it makes her feel better

i definately can understand how people are obsessed with her and like her so much... i just feel that with Stevie, yes she has the sad and depressing, but she also has the upbeat, which balances it out just right...

Tori doesn't seem to have many uplifting or uptempo songs in her catalog (ie. Stand Back, If Anyone Falls, I Can't Wait, Fall From Grace, etc etc)

I love me some Sheryl Crow. I have all her albums, and I personally think she is one of the most talented women in music today. I havent' read this whole thread, so, I may be out of it, but I think TISL is a great album, just a little overproduced. Also, in a few songs, I think Sheryl's voice is too dominate. Her vocal should have been toned down a little more.
