Does anybody else think that on the cover of Bella Donna she looks freakishly tall and frightening?
OOOH I adore that cover, it is my fav of her solo albums. She does look much taller than she was Tuesday night, LOL...she was itty bitty...so tiny, just like a little girl...just adorable.

The Bella Donna cover is my absolute favorite! I love the mystical element of it...Stevie in white against the dark background...the tambourine with the roses...hell, i love the bird  I see what your saying about her not looking like herself, but despite the picture, I think the overall feeling of the album cover is what makes it her best.

It's a brilliant cover- sexy but feminine, girly but rawk chick. And the beaded hair flaps (or whatever the heck you call those) were quite sexy. I used to draw pictures of the cover as a kid... I found it challenging to capture that facial expression as well as all of the folds of her dress.
Only much later did I realize that it was a direct rip-off of the cover of Cher's "Dark Lady" album. Even the calligraphy was similar!:

I don't think Bella Donna is scary, just not my favorite. I don't like her hair or make up.
To me, her album covers always leave something to be desired...with the exception of TISL. They all could've been so much more creative and beautiful.

RAL is my favorite cover by far, but I like the BD cover. It's a sexy pose, though I don't really like birds. I do think Stevie looked like that for a time, like in the Insider video.

Just this minute the three birds are flying in perfect formation... the emerald, the gold and the snow white... because they have lived forever."

I love this cover. It's so simple, she looks hot IMO, she's almost smiling - in the other covers she looks sad or pissed or scared. Plus it's like she's caught in mid-spin while she's playing dress-up in oversized clothes. The cover captures a fun side of Stevie. I just love it.

Such loving, loyal fans. No wonder the woman is still touring....all these sucker fans will gladly pay to see her perform the same songs 20 years running....even if they don't buy her records. Why go into the studio when your hardcore fans do nothing but complain about your songs, your writings, accuse you of stealing lyrics, and bitch that your album covers are shoddy, cheap and a rip off of someone else's idea. For the record, Stevie says that she concieved the cover of Bella Donna in a dream....where she saw a bright vertical white line, against a dark background. She realized the bright light was herself, coming in out of the darkness. She talks about this in her Rolling Stone interview, the issue where she is on the cover with the bird.
Then again, she probably stole this dream from someone else, too.
I realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinions (which is exactly why I feel comfortable here expressing my own)....but, gosh, why all the unnecessary cruelty?

I totally agree with you. I myself could not believe what was posted earlier... all of those quotes are very similar to her lyrics, hell maybe she intentionaly did use some of the lines from those books and poems because she loved them so much... but she didn't steal anything! Stuff like this happens all of the time with musicans, writers, animators, and visual artists in general. But its all done subconsciously and we don't realize it at first. I go to art school in NY, we learned about this.... I myself was told that I draw and write like certain people (Burton, Gorey, Syndack), but that doesn't mean I am stealing their particular style or idea.... Stevie obviously read thier works over the course of many years, maybe starting in her teens, and was probably just inspired, these were her teachers, people she aspired to write like. Did you know that apprentices of master artists paint or draw almost like their teachers? Most of those song were never released anyway, she probably wrote them for herself and has never made a dime from them. And look at the vast majority of songs she hasn't been accused of "stealing"..... 'Rhiannon', for one is a Masterpiece! I don't mean to rant, but this really annoyed the hell out of me.... Of course everyone has a write to speak their minds, but if you have to go dig up so much unnecessary dirt one someone you love and admire so much just to make them look like a rotten thief, then why are you wasting your time listening to her music in the first place? I will always think Stevie is wonderful and talented no matter what  :)

Stuff like this happens all of the time with musicans, writers, animators, and visual artists in general. It's been happening a lot lately at various newspapers around the country. I'm not saying it's right to plagiarize by any means.... but a few lines, or even the subject of the song that is similar to others is nothing to point fingers at... St. Cecilia was the parton saint of music, Rhiannon and Melacine are well known mythological characters from thousands of years ago, no one owns them or their stories. I guess no one can relate to what I'm talking about. Hundreds of artists have copied the scene from 'The Last Supper', many of these copying from fellow painters, but Stevie writes one song about St. Cecilia, Rhiannon, characters from various novels, etc... and its some big deal? I did a children's book for my thesis based on Tim Burton's 'The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and other Stories'. My characters, poems, and subject was were completely my own, but the idea, format, & inspiration was from him. Hell, I even dedicated the book to the guy AND Stevie, whose songs also inspired me to write those poems. I hope I'm not pissing anyone off, I never meant to ;)
One of my teachers once said, "no idea is EVER original, everything we create comes from what we know or dream. Everything is created from something else we've seen, on the street, or in nature. But they way you transform your idea IS you own. Like life, ART is a cycle."

I totally agree with you. I myself could not believe what was posted earlier... all of those quotes are very similar to her lyrics, hell maybe she intentionaly did use some of the lines from those books and poems because she loved them so much... Stevie has been pretty honest in the past about her literary influences. She has said that she'll sit down with one of her favorite books... something by Wilde or Poe and so on... and just randomly skip to a chapter, read a little of it, and then let it "filter through her" into the lyrics she writes.
There's actually an organization that commends contemporary songwriters for the use of literary references in their music. I can't find the link for it at the moment, but I'll post it when I do.
In the meantime, here's an extensive (though not complete) list of songs... hugely famous and completely obscure... that feature literary references:

I commend them as well.
I never would have read that Hawthorne short story five years ago had I not loved the RTTg demo. I did not care for Hawthorne back when I was in school, and if not for Stevie's interest in him, I'd have avoided him, I imagine.
(That having been said, I haven't read him again since reading the story. :) )

I always loved the fact that the Dark Lady cover was so eerily like Bella Donna. The one and only TRUE megastar, Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPiere Bono Allman Just Plain Cher has always been one of Stevie's favorite icons...
However, I do believe the "dream" concept Stevie had for the cover. She had her visions, as she always does...
And the hairdo - from Paris, according to the liner notes - was THE **** that summer of '81. I remember...

Does Stevie really like Cher? I always found it odd that they never seemed to interact on the VH1 Diva special. I didn't know if they were avoiding each other beause towards the end they are standing near each other and don't approach or something. It has been so long since I watched it but I know something seemed fishy to me...

And, of course, the DIVA photos. If I remember correctly, Stevie was front row for the BELIEVE tour stop in Phoenix.

Thanks for the link :) ..... I never knew so many other songwriters used literary references like Stevie, though I was aware that Patti Smith and Bob Dylan did..... I guess it goes to show you that its not such a terrible thing after all. I'm sure if those writers and poets knew that their works were being translated into song, reaching people who wouldn't have come across the original works in the first place, they would be very happy

I think it's great she used literary references. In high school, Poe was a dreaded part of my schoolwork. After I read someplace that Stevie's music was partly inspired by Poe, it made me run to the bookstore and get a book of his works to read. It's pretty good stuff when you get into it.
She's not perfect; she has her faults just like anyone else, but she is a talented lady and no one can take that away from her. Look around at what this generation has to listen to: J. Lo, Jessica Simpson, Britney, Madonna's "soy latte" rap crap http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/tmb1975/vomit-smiley-020.gif and the bevy of other "artists" out there who have their music written for them. Yeah, there's a few good bands and solo acts out there, but not nearly as many as in the 70s and even 80s.
I have to say that although I developed a thick skin dealing with conflicts on other forums, it stings to see Stevie criticized as much as she is. I know she's not a perfect being, but for a woman who's old enough to be my mom and out there doing high-kicks and rocking out, it makes me respect her quite a bit.
Just my .02. Nobody shoot spitballs at me!
PS...The BD cover is nice, but my two all-time favorite covers are Street Angel and TISL.

LOL, Diamondsnake. I used to be a big Madonna fan up until American Life. Music was OK - only 3 songs on there stuck in my head, but it wasn't bad. I couldn't get into AL though. Not to be corny, but once I really got into FM and Stevie, it seemed like most other music acts kind of took a backseat for me. They felt shallow or something.
Anyhow, I will admit to buying Gwen Stefani's Love Angel Music Baby and dancing around like a maniac to it, LOL. Not to mention I'm really dying to get the Harajuku Lovers HP camera... :p

I completely agree
but i think if you know everyone here love Stevie/Mac then it's ooright to bitch as they do. Like everyone here knows they're a fan, so it's all out of love. But some ppl do go a bit far and I wonder if they're fans. But it's ooright to be critical as many ppl here are, coz there's lots of love (i hope  )

Finally somebody else likes the RAL cover.
Here are my rankings:
1) RAL - I explained in an earlier post in this thread.
2) TimeSpace - Stevie in her mystery. Ah, I miss those days when she stuck tablecloths on her head.
3) Bella Donna - regal but dated
4) TISL - I like it - but I miss those brown eyes, and sorry, but I think her butt looks like it spans London to Paris Paris to Rome in the dress.
5) The Wild Heart The Stevie with her wrists crossed looks good, the profile Stevie looks okay, and the downcast one looks like she needs Botox or something. The smile lines and all. Sorry.
6) TOSOTM - The eyes are too deepset, the hair looks like an Afghan Hound in a windstorm, and the protruding mouth looks like it's super-imposed off an old Colorforms children's set, or like her teeth are too big to fit behind her lips - Think Pat Benatar.
7) Street Angel - It's growing on me, but blech to the weak pose and expression. I don't mind Stevie being vulnerable in her lyrics, but I don't want her looking so fragile and broken in photos.

:] AHH!!! This is so funny because when I got the original 1993 mix of the whole SA album, the whole album sounds a little different than the original, so I decided it needed a jewel case for me to keep it in. That's fine, cuz I have a few empty jewel cases, and I have some software to make cd covers (the front and the back). SO I actually used one of the pictures from that very same photo shoot for the cover and did the lettering myself. I also did the back, but I used the photo from the SA pin that was sold during the tour (look for this on the "Street Angel Collectibles" thread) and the whole thing looks awesome. Ok. Just had to get that out.
My sister was looking through my CD's and goes "Did you make the case for this? It looks cool!" And my friend was over and saw the CD cover and was like "She is so hot."
Stevie looked awesome in those pictures from the photo shoot! She looks so young.
