I think it has some great songs, but it's the cold and metallic processing of her voice that I simply cannot tolerate.

This situation may require electroshock therapy. And a few other psychiatric/musical interventions I am simply not qualified to administer. :woohoo:
Perhaps vitamins and exercise would be beneficial.

I bought it, I listen to it, I like it....but the voice is just a little to metallic sounding for my liking. Almost as if its Stevie-by-numbers without the emotion. I'm sure its the production tho, not Stevie as her voice is still in GREAT shape!!!

EVERYDAY    That song is so danme BLAH. TISL as a whole isnt really a favorite of mine. The title song has got to be one of her top 3 solo songs EVER. Fall From Grace, Bombay Saphires and Sorcerer are all amazing songs too. Of course there's also some real crap like umm Everyday  and Love Changes and That Made me Stronger and a favorite of many that I hate is Planets of the Universe.

I don't think this album is as good as a whole but I do think it has spots of brilliance. I love the title track, sorcerer, planets of the universe, Bombay Sapphires, Fall From Grace, and Love Is. I feel TFFT is one of the worst songs shes ever done and everyday plain puts me to sleep. I can see why she would release it as a single tho. Overall: good.

Ummm... well I like her voice on the record actually. I think it is cool. There is nothing you can really do to force someone to like a record though. Just listen to it more would be my advice.
I posted a thread several months ago about how I couldn't get into the Wild Heart LP. People told me to listen to more and now I LOVE IT!!! It is one of my favorites.
I was in love with TISL from the first time I listened to it though. I just loved her strange voice and cool lyrics.

This is the album that made me get into Stevie's music in the first place. I never paid attention to her solo work until TISL came out. It's probably my favorite of all of her albums. Yes, the voice is older but still sounds good to me, and I love each of the songs (some more than others). For me, every album but TISL required more than one listen to get me interested in it. Weird, but different strokes for different folks. :)

You took the words right outta my mouth, Christopher. I LOVE TISL and I think it's her best work yet. TISL has so many different types of sounds to it. The only song I really can't get into is "I Miss You". That one's a little boring to me. "Love Changes" and "That made Me Stronger" are great because they are so different than other stuff she has done. I think she put a lot of emotion into TISL too. But, as Christopher said, everyone has their own likes/dislikes. An example for me would be the band "Nirvana". I NEVER could get into them, nor could I understand why the heck people loved them so much.

Tom Cruise and Rob Thomas caught in bed
Permalink | Tuesday - June 28, 2005
If there's one thing I know, it's that random gossip from total strangers based on absolutely no facts is true about 100% of the time. That said, here's an email that reader Rob decided to forward in.
So, I work with this girl who has a family friend that works in PR in Hollywood, and she always has fun little scoops about celeb stuff. Well, if this is true, this is just ridiculous! So, the whole Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes thing - apparently, it is, like we all thought anyway, a ridiculous PR thing. Tom Cruise was supposedly caught in bed with Rob Thomas (the lead singer of Matchbox 20) by Rob Thomas's wife, Marisol. Rob Thomas is also a Scientologist. Obviously, nobody wanted this to get out, and Marisol was going nuts threatening to expose them. I think that she might be getting paid off, but to preempt any rumors about Tom, the Scientology people as well as Tom's PR people basically recruited Katie Holmes to play this part of Tom's super-excited girlfriend, and they are just paying her a b*ttload of money. I guess they also woo'd her with promises of what this would do for her career, since she's at best a B-lister. But I guess now Marisol is so annoyed at all of the press Tom and Katie's relationship is getting, she's threatening to go public, spill the beans, and file for divorce.

I love TISL... but a lot of it has to do with my deep love of the lyrics. Funnily enough, I quite love the demos of many of the songs better than the final products. Examples: Planets of the Universe (No Light - most heartbreakingly beautiful song evah), Candlebright (Nomad), Bombay Sapphires (there's a GREAT outtake I love, where at one point there's more echo to her voice. Love. it.), and more... I also consider Space Needle, Chanel Chanel, and My Heart to be part of TISL, so that just enhances the love. :) :D

It's interesting that you say this. I never would have described it that way....but your words are right on the nail.
I love the album overall....better than SA and better than TOSOTM....
After hearing the Deep Dish cover of Dreams, I just really, REALLY want Stevie in the studio, making new music, and using that fabulous falsetto of hers to bring some life and depth to whatever songs she chooses to record.

I have mixed feeling about TISL. I love the title song, Planets, Fall From Grace and Bombay Saphirres. The vocal on Candlebright is awful IMO, and I despise that version of Sorcerer. The demo and live BN version are so damn good.....but I cannot candle the TISL Sorcerer. TFFT blows, and the rest of them are ok. So I love some, hate some, and the rest I listen to, but can take them or leave them. It took me awhile to warm up to the album in general, but now it's aight.

I love TISL as a whole, but can you imagine if Lindsey produced it?
I do tend to like the more upbeat songs on this CD better.
My favorite songs are FFG and TISL, POTU, and Sorcerer, but I also adore
Love Is. Just the lyrics alone on Love Is are so powerful.
Can you imagine if Lindsey produced this CD? I still believe that Lindsey knows
Stevie's musical soul more than anyone and knows what to do with her songs to make them come alive.

I like TISL.
I would like Every Day more if it were not a single, the single, that announced the album. I resent that it had no place as a single, being nothing terribly special in any way, and this was supposed to be her comeback album.
I've thought all along that Planets is overproduced & lacks any emotion in the vocal.
Love Changes has a good vocal but is not a great song. I don't mind TMMS, though I agree that the lyrics are self-indulgent. To me the sound of the song is early Nineties.
I think the vocal on TFFT is excellent, and I'm one of the hew who doesn't mind Natalie's harmony with her.
The Candlebright vocal grew on me; it's not the Nomad vocal, but the music is pretty faithful to the demo. I have two small problems with Candlebright: One is that the ending takes forever. The other is that there is no space between the song TISL, which is excellent, and the beginning of Candlebright.
I think I Miss You and It's Only Love are very pretty, but Love Is does nothing for me. At all.
Sorcerer is such a great song, not as good as the BN version, but still great.
Bombay Sapphires is very good. One of those songs like Outside The Rain & How Still My Love & No Spoken Word that casual fans won't remember, but most Stevie lovers will grow to love.
Fall From Grace should have been a single, though I prefer it live, & it's never been my favorite.

I'll be honest and say I really don't care for TISL that much. :sorry: I never really listen to it. I like the first 4 tracks and "Fall From Grace" but that's it, really. The title track is just plain awesome, as well as "Sorcerer" and "POTU". "Everyday" WAS the worst choice for a single. Especially for the first single from the album. The first single from an album is supposed to help promote it and when I first heard it before the album came out, I was really dissappointed. That song is just so boring and, I dunno, "soft". Not very Stevie. But the video was pretty cool. There should have been more songs like "Fall From Grace" on the album. And "Chanel Chanel" and "Space Needle" should have made the cut, especially over lame songs like "Too Far From Texas" and "I Miss You". They are better songs, and fit the whole concept better anway.

I love TISL and think it is her masterpiece. The lyrics are amazing and the way it is sequenced is near perfection.
I think it was quite an emotional journey for Stevie and ALL the songs have a specific point or meaning to her under the concept of TISL. I am not a fan of TMMS but I appreciate why she included it. I am also not a big fan of TFFT but her vocal on it is fantastic and the message is clear so I can deal. Overall, even the songs I do not like seem important to the album because together they all tell the story. TISL, FFG and Bombay Sappires are the most important and revealing songs for me. She says so much about her own fears and feelings in this group of songs...something she normally tends to shy away from with the use of alot of "shes" "hers" or focussing on the man's feelings.
My three complaints are Sorcerer....I cannot deal with the album cut after having the BN and live version. I REALLY miss Linds on this song, both his guitar and vocals. Sheryls vocals on it just make me cringe.
Second would be the knack Stevie has for always dropping the most profound lyrics from her songs. In BS she drops the gorgeous "dreams" lines and in FFG she drops a few lyrics that are key to the emotional punch of the song. "she loves his music sometimes....she makes him cry" and "looking down into a crystal ball, into crystal stairs..doing the same things over and over, going in for repairs.
Lastly would be her exclusion of Chanel Chanel and My Heart from the album. They would have fit nicely, if not better, into her concept and enhanced the overall rise and fall of Stevie's journey to ShangriLa and then losing it. My Heart is one of my favorite songs because it is written about Stevie's own emotions, feelings and love. It is pretty personal and reveals alot about what she was thinking and feeling. Actually, that could be why she left it off the album, it is too straightforward for her.
So yup, I love TISL. That and BellaDonna are at the top of my list. Wild Heart is also a favorite but I cannot listen to it too often because it just breaks my heart.

I absolutely love TISL. From start to finish, it's clearly a labor of love from Stevie. I thought John Shanks did a fabulous production job. For me, the standout cuts are the title track, Planets (I particularly love the dance remix to this), FFG and Bombay (my personal favorite). I don't have many complaints about this release other than I wish there were more songs!!

If you don't like the album, you don't like it. Don't beat yourself up over it. I would suggest listening to it a few more times and see if that works but if not don't worry about other people's opinions. TISL happens to be my favorite Stevie album. I think it is her masterpiece minus a few songs (TFFT, Everyday, TMMS, and I Miss You). I LOVE every single other song on this album. The songs are deep, beautiful, and powerful and I think her voice is outstanding, even if it's not the most energetic and varied. It's a work of art in my mind.
On a side note, Bella Donna is probably my least favortite Stevie album (or at least the one I listen to the least) so don't feel bad!

I am not a fan of TISL. What is wrong with me?
I love this album because I love 99% of what Stevie does...I can't help it! But I do understand where you're coming from. There is a lot of excess production on much of this album, IMO, and it took me a long time to get used to. I'm still not used to it on some of the songs, especially since I was already familiar with the marvelous stripped-down demos for some of them. The title track is perfection, IMO, and I do actually like the production on some of the other songs. I can barely tolerate Love Is, though, after hearing the incredible alternate version/rehearsal. I do not feel it is enhanced in any way by Sarah M.'s breathy vocal sound collage. Though I love this album, for whatever reason I do listen to it the least (save TimeSpace). Yes, that includes Street Angel.
I also think Stevie should have either saved If You Ever Did Believe for the album or just put it on there even though it had already been out. It fits right in if you add it in or swap it out for your least favorite song. I think that song is just phenomonal...one of my all-time faves. It took so long to see the light of day and now it's just lost in history on an unpopular soundtrack. :distress:

You are not alone in this. IYEDB is one of my top 10 Stevie songs off all time and should most definitely have been released on one of her albums, not a movie soundtrack. It is overlooked by a lot of people and I don't understand why more people are not in love with it. It is deep, emotional, and her singing on it is profound. Me too, as you can probably tell from my "location" line above. :D
Interestingly, TFFT is the ONLY TISL song I heard on the radio here. Both of the large country stations played it ad-nauseum for about two weeks, then *poof* - never again. I don't think it coincided with the beginning of the Dixie Chicks furor, but I could be mistaken.
And the crowd went wild for it during her show here, since Sandy was in the audience and was introduced briefly. Not to mention the Houston name-check during the song, which Stevie really emphasized: "in a room just outside of HOUS-TON"

KGSR played it a lot in Austin, too. And they nearly killed me by playing "Reconsider Me" a handful of times when Enchanted came out.
And that's really saying something given that KGSR at the time was ALL-Lyle Lovett/Stevie Ray Vaughan/Dwight Yoakum-all-the time.

We all have our preferences, Nightbird, for instance I can't listen to The Other Side Of The Mirror without a yoga session to prepare myself to the 80's scare.
About TISL, it made of me a fan of her solo work, I really love the album. I love the production, the way she transformed 70's demos in very contemporary music, the honest way she talks about feelings, almost violently, without using masks or defensive covers as she's often done in the past. Her voice is so unique that becomes another powerful instrument that lets the album reach my soul. Then some of the songs are masterpieces to me. Trouble in Shangri-la as an example, shows how acute is her glance on the world she's living, and how directly she's capable to look at her life, and how inspired her songwriting can be. Sometimes I think that if she wasn't so afraid to disappoint the part of the fans who are so nostalgic of the seventies and early eighties, she would go even forward on that path. She definitely tried on SYW too, so I'm hopeful fo r her next solo (yes, I think there will be another one, and another with FM too  ).

#1- Planets of the Universe was brilliant IN ITS EXTENDED form from the single. In my opinion it should have ROCKED much more than it did. Too safe. The song didn't even get started until the soaring 'YOU WILL REMEMBER BUT I WILL DIE A SLOW DEATH part (only in the extended mix). I love the title song Trouble In Shangrila, Too Far From Texaz, and Fall From Grace. I also love Sorcerer. But I agree 100% with the posters who said her voice sounded too metallic and processed. I HATED the production of this CD. Sorry Sheryl. Just watered down and Stevie sounds like she is singing inside of a garbage can. I wish Stevie would stay away from Sheryl Crowe musically. No offense. And "Silver Girl" is one of the worst things I have ever heard. No more Sheryl.

How come Candlebright gets no love? I especially like the Noman demo. I think it's one of my favs on the album. Love the part "You drive me back again, and I come when you shine".

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I never heard any Stevie demos before I heard TISL so I got used to the album versions. Lucky for me because if I had been familiar with all the demos and loved them and then heard the TISL verisons I may have been disappointed.
I'm not hearing the fingers on the chalkboard analogy though...Isn't that high pitched and squeaky?

It's the way that her voice was processed, it's unbearable at times. On SYW, it sounded like Stevie Nicks in all of her nasal glory; her vocals were warm for the most part (even in ridiculously overproduced tracks) and they pulled you in. On TISL, she sounds almost alien. They put her voice through their fancy softwares and machines, and she came out sounding metallized and cold.

I really disagree. Her vocals at the starts of Destiny Rules and Everybody Finds Out are flat as a pancake.
In my opinion, Planets has Stevie's weakest vocal on TISL, and it's not a bad vocal, just not nearly as passionate as those in the demos.

That's just the thing; they were flat, monotonal, energetic, soft, strained, passionate, and full of emotion on Say You Will. It ran the gamut and they didn't filter and process her voice to the point where she sounded cold and alien like on TISL. Whether anyone likes the SYW vocals or not, there can be no denying that they were her most passionate and moving vocals in years. TISL, on the other hand, makes me think 'Who give a ****, really? It doesn't even sound like she does.'

~JamieYou said it! Down with "I Miss You"! (Ugh, I'm so predictable). And I do believe that "Love Changes" and "That Made Me Stronger" are great additions to the album.
I do think that her voice isn't what it could be on some parts of some songs, and, in some cases, perhaps the whole song. I think I'd have to break out to get specific. I love the way her voice sounded in 2001 but the way it was mixed doesn't agree with me in some cases. I initially fell in love with the TISL version of POTU but then when I heard the Rumours re-issue version I realized that something is missing from the TISL version. I don't disagree with making it a fast song (and I still enjoy the song a lot) but to me there's emotion in the slow version that the TISL version lacks. About "Every Day," though...I hear so much emotion in that song and I can't figure out why people say it's blah. Her vocals and the music really move me, again and again. Over and over again, even. I never tire of it.

American Idol runner-up Bo Bice and his girlfriend, Caroline Fisher, have gotten married in their home state of Alabama, PEOPLE has confirmed.
The couple, who have been together for almost two years, exchanged vows on June 15. Bice and Fisher's marriage certificate was granted Thursday in Shelby County, Ala.
"It was a small, intimate wedding," Bice's publicist, Roger Widynowski, tells PEOPLE.
Fisher, 24, met Bice, 29, before he stole the spotlight on FOX's talent hunt – when he worked as a guitar store clerk and frequented the Ragtime Cafe in Hoover, Ala., where she waited tables.

Bice finished in second place on this season's Idol, behind Oklahoma native Carrie Underwood. But being a runner-up hasn't hurt Bice's career: He signed a record deal with RCA less than 24 hours after the Idol finale and his single of the show's original song "Inside Your Heaven," has topped the charts.
Bice, known for his down-to-earth-rocker style, tattooed a bird on his wrist to commemorate his finale performance with longtime idols Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose "Freebird" he sang earlier in the season. "It was such an incredible experience," he says.

When it comes to Planets lacking emotion, I think that comes from the demo we are all so used to. That is filled with angry, wistful longing...the emotion is just pouring out of her and that became so much of the song for alot of people. Thirty years later and things are much different, Stevie does not feel the same way...she isn't as angry, hurt, sad mournful, hopeful and that lack of emotion comes through ONLY because we have the demo to compare it to. Another reason why Stevie probably hates people having unreleased songs and demo versions. Stevie consciously wanted to soften Planets because she "didn't want to do that to him"...and it really shows. The passion is gone. The same thing happened with Smile At U, although I like Liddy's version too.
I agree that Lindsey coaxed some excellent vocals out of her on SYW. The way Goodbye Baby came out, especially the opening two lines..gives me goosebumps. (for those who will come back and say LB has nothing to do with her vocals...you can see it on the DR doc when they are doing Thrown Down and she sings a few lines and then looks up for his response and he tells her he likes the "first line especially". It is clear that he is guiding her on her vocals and that she wants to please him) Anyway...he really was able to capture the incredible sadness of Goodbye Baby in her voice and the arranging he did around it is genius. He handled that song with kid gloves and seems to have put alot of effort into keeping it simple and understated yet profound and incredibly moving.
To stay on topic though...I agree her vocals on TiSL are way too overproduced and processed but the lyrics completely connect with me, so I love the album. I can feel Stevie's pride in the songs too so I enjoy that, especially after the disaster (in her mind Curtis) of Street Angel.

Everyday is one of my faves too, after Bombay Sapphires, TISL, FFG and Love Is.
TISL is the only album of Stevie's that has more songs on it that i hate than like. But then, my favorite Stevie-solo CD is a 2way tie between TOSOTM & Street Angel and everyone seems to hate those 2 so i don't know.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I don't think there's anything wrong with yours

KGSR still is that way - but now they've added Patty Griffin, Willie Nelson, and Alejandro Escovedo. It's still a cool station, but WAY too repetitive and unvaried these days.
