These songs are really rocking... Pretty underappreciated if you ask me. Does anyone else like these songs? Freedom, Love Is Dangerous, Affairs of the Heart are all excellent. And her backing vocals on Skies the Limit, In the Back of My Mind, etc. are wonderful. What are everyone's thoughts on this batch of songs? How can someone not like Freedom? Great vocals and lyrics "Look at me with Daggers, it won't do you any good!"...

The whole album is great if you ask me. Better then Mirage or Tango.

her worst material EVER if you ask me... "Affairs Of The Heart" is so syrupy sweet I wanna puke... "The Second Time" is ok, but i liked it better the first time when it was called "After The Glitter Fades"... "Freedom" is musically just way too overly influenbed by Billy Burnette.. perhaps that's a song that should have been saved for Bekka... "Love Is Dangerous" is listenable..

And I agree about the album being better (for me) than TITN - half of that album is just unlistenable to my ears. Not Mirage tho - shimmery greatness.

Yes I really like her stuff on BTM. I listen to Freedom and LID all the time. I find a certain charm in the much maligned ST and AOTH. As for the rest of the cd I like WTSGD, BOMM and the title track. The rest of it I find lightweight and generic :sorry: I can't even listen to HF and DYK. They suck more than anything else FM has ever done :distress:

I love every song except The Second Time. Affairs of the Heart was one of the very first songs I ever heard by Stevie and I love it. It is definitley one of my favorite songs that shes ever done. I do not think it would work live but it is awesome on the album. Its so peppy and it makes me smile. Freedom really worked live IMO. She seemed to be into it even dancing a little. Love is Dangerous I also love. Showing some of her upper register. Her back ups on Skies the Limit really stick out to me also. Save Me is also one of my most favorite Christine songs ever.

Firstly,

BTM songs by stevie are amazing. Freedom is great, second time, is amazing. Affiars of the heart is a great pop song. Love is dangerous however doesn't really get me everytime I listen to it. I love the part where she says "standing at the crossroads ooh yeah this is wild." but aside from that I am not a fan of that song.

Secondly,

Nightbird has to be one of the best songs on Wild Heart!

I can't say that I like her BTM songs better than her TITN songs (and TITN as a whole is far more of a masterpiece to me) - BUT... I have always loved her backing vocals in In the Back of My Mind. And I will never forget the chills that song created at the opening of the Mask shows.

I did go back really recently and listen to her BTM songs (sort of, would absence and longevity make the heart grow fonder.. ?). It didn't. I didn't love them. :sorry:

I must go on record as saying I LOVE Sister Honey and Imperial Hotel. They are better than all of Stevie's BTM tracks. JMO.

On another note, I think the entire Behind The Mask album is pretty damn brilliant. When you consider that it was their first entire album together, they really sound cohesive - like they'd been together for many more years than they actually were. I think this lineup could have done really well, if fate had determined it was to be. Oh well. My favorite song is When The Sun Goes Down, and my favorite Stevie song on the album is Freedom. I'd so love for her to bring this one to the stage again. Didn't she do it on just a few BTM shows? Or was that Love Is Dangerous? I don't collect live boots, so I really have no clue.

Seriously, I like it mostly as just a fun throwaway. I don't consider it a serious entry in her repertoire.

On another note, I think the entire Behind The Mask album is pretty damn brilliant.I don't think "Mask" is a brilliant album, but I do like the songs on it, & I like the vocal harmonies of Christine, Billy, Stevie & Rick: for example, the chorus on "Skies the Limit." In fact, I think "Skies the Limit" is not only the best track on the album, but one of Christine's finest songs. The bridge is killer, & the chorus hook is grabolicious.

My favorite Stevie song is "Second Time Around," which has honest, poignant lyrics & pretty guitar backup.

darklinensuit
06-30-2005, 12:22 AM
My BTM tastes have never been the popular ones.

I love Freedom. Period.
The Second Time would be better with a softer vocal, like in Goodbye Baby.
Love Is Dangerous is okay, but tries a bit too hard.
AOTH is one of my least favorites anywhere. The only decent part is "But I thought that this was just for now/And that time would take its toll upon us all..." but the next lines have such a strained vocal the moment is ruined.

I think the song BTM is great. I don't like any of Chris's other songs here (and I like Chris) except for When It Comes To Love with Billy, and I don't like any of his other songs here either, except for When The Sun Goes Down, but I dislike Stand On The Rock. And it seems everybody else hates WTSGD and WICTL.

Like I said, I have mixed & unpopular feelings towards this album.

Jeez...Maybe it's embarassing to admit but all the songs that have been mentioned in this thread I love.
"Seven Wonders''...ONE of my top favorite songs from the late 80's (almost one of my favs of ALL time! No joke!) I love just turning that song on on a hot day and it either makes me wanna swim, or drive!
"Sister Honey"...don't even get me started on that one! Love it to death! It IS very sexual. AND it's just plain fun! Very funky.
And as for "Maybe Love"...I love the alternate/demo version of it, too. And I have to agree and say that "spritely" is a very good word to discribe it. It's so upbeat, that makes it a "pop masterpiece" automatically. It has "early-90's-radio-hit" written all over it!!! Too bad it didn't do too well on the charts. It's only because Stevie didn't seem real 'hip' at the time in the public's eyes. (But she always seems hip to me, no lie).
ANYWAY. I really like Stevie's contributions on BTM.
"Love Is Dangerous" is some of the best Hard Country Rock that you can listen to in 3 minutes.
"Affairs Of The Heart" is cute, and has nice lyrics. That's about it.
"Freedom" is a decent rocker. It's actually kind of catchy.
And "The Second Time" is sad and reflective, but nobody really would understand what she is talking about unless they are a die hard fan.
I have to say I love "In The Back Of My Mind" (fav track on the whole album) and Stevie's background vocals are the highlight. I love that part "Remember..." right in the middle. It's CHILLING!! And her lead vocals with Burnette are awesome also. She really sounds witchy there.

I think that you are absolutely right. It is a pop masterpiece!!! :woohoo: It's so perfect. I just hope one day I find the "remix version".... I love the solo "lalalalallalala" which should have made the cut. I'm sure it would have done better if it would have been promoted better. I think "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind" is a sunny piece of pop music that's absolutely irresistable. Just yesterday I was listening to my cassette single of "Maybe Love," and I would swear it is a slightly different mix. The percussion is more prominent, and the instrumentation just sounds fuller. Anyway, I love all of Stevie's songs on 'Behind The Mask,' with "Freedom" being my favorite. "Love Is Dangerous" simmers, and I wish the chemistry between Stevie and Rick was given more time to develop. "Affairs of the Heart" is enjoyable, and "The Second Time" has a poignant intimacy that draws me in. Stevie's backing vocals helped to make this album really sound like a group effort. :)
I agree... this album sounded so much more like a cohesive group effort. You can hear backing vocals of every member on almost every song, which is pretty cool. Stevie has vocals on like 10/12 songs here, which is a big change from TITN where she was MIA. I don't see how people like her Tango songs better though. Seven Wonders is nice, but she didn't write it! I like WTTR...S, but WISYA is not all that.

I really wish this Behind the Mask era of the band had a chance to record one more album.
