I don't remember if I posted Sushi's picture in the pet thread, but he died early this morning. I buried him in the planter out front, then went to Pier 1 and bought a tea light candle holder with peach/ginger candles to place where the aquarium was. My poor bud got cancer a couple months ago and he finally succomed. WAAHH!!! Is there anything besides cockroachs that are immune to cancer? What a dreadful sign of the toxic waste dump we're all living in.

Forgive me, but my computer doesn't download images very clearly. What exactly was Sushi?
But I am sorry for your loss.

Sushi was a beautiful royal blue half-moon Japanese fighting Betta. The kind that have the long sweeping fins and tail. The ones they sell in plastic cups at the store. Thanks for the condolences... many of these type fish have personality plus, so when they pass it's not like your goldfish died. :o

I am so sorry.

Thank you. It wasn't very fun watching him die. Came pretty close to putting him in the freezer, but just couldn't do it. To think when I was a kid we used to flush fish down the toliet like nobody's business. Egad... what has gotten into me?

I had him for a year and a half which is considered a "normal" lifespan for that type of fish. Speculation is that breeding methods have made them weak.

I'm so sorry Laura! I know how you feel. I was devastated when my gorgeous Koi, Loudwater, died of old age when I was in high school. She brought so much joy to my life and others people just could not understand the extent of it. I'm really sorry for your loss. Sushi was a beautiful, briliant blue. :(

I'm so sorry to hear this, Laura. Unfortunately, like many others of man's domesticated species, bettas are horribly inbred which contributes to the tendency to produce malignancies.

My own bettas - Joaquin, Morrison, and Jules - extend their condolences as well. :(

On another note, however... Goldfish can have just as much personality as any other species. I had to give away my babies - Maximus, Sha Nae Nae, Huck, and Tom because they outgrew my tank. I miss them horribly and still visit them from time to time. (They live in a friend's koi pond now.)

Sorry for your loss - the loss of any pet is hard, my nephew had a goldfish he managed to keep alive for 3 and a half years! It got huge- he was just devastated when it passed - so I know it must be hard...again - sorry for your loss :o

Sorry for the loss of your pet. Pets are a very special part of people's lives. They are like part of the family. Just remember that Sushi is in fishy heaven swimming in an beautiful, endless sea.

Thanks everybody. And I have to apologize for my gold fish comment, that was kinda rude and unnecessary. I've been taking some crap from friends and family about being the least bit upset over this, so I am truly comforted by your replies. I live alone and have no other pets... so like, well... ya, anyway... I'm glad his suffering is over.

Aaawww, poor thing. I'm sorry - when I used to keep an aquarium, I'd get attached to my little fishies...my cat killed my betta.

LauraI am SO sorry that you have to take **** from people who don't understand why you're upset about this!!! :distress: I totally understand where you're coming from.

Are you planning on buying another fish soon? I had a hard time doing that when Loudwater died. She was my favorite, and after she died I sent my other koi, Everlund, and my goldfish, Quazle, to live in someone's koi pond. (I guess I was being ridiculous, but I was a bit younger at the time). I haven't bought other fish since, and now I don't have room for the aquarium anymore. I hope that you feel differently and want to get a new friend, though I know he or she couldn't take Sushi's place.

I'm very sorry as well. I have lost fish in the past. I did have a 50 gallon tank with a ton of beautiful fish and then all of a sudden the all got sick and died and so I sold all the parts and said, "I don't need this in my life" because it's so sad.

Take care and take comfort in the fact that you gave him a great life.

I had an aquarium in my room when I was younger. Until I was ten, my room was always a mess. (One day I just got much neater. ) Anyway, of all my fish, the algae eater was the one that kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger, and he lived for years. One day I noticed he was missing from the tank. I figured my dad had flushed him without telling me while I was at school, that being the kind of thing my dad would do. A few weeks later I was looking for something in the mess of papers on my floor, and under many of them was that huge, dried-up fish (6-plus inches or so, much bigger than any other algae eater I'd owned). He must have jumped out of the tank, lifting the lid on his own. Freaked the crap out of me.
I promise I'm not so messy any longer. :)

I used to have some bettas when I was a kid. My mom killed one of them by putting water that was too hot in the bowl. One of them had tons of babies, but apparently ate them or something, and one of the other fish too.

Sorry to hear about Sushi. He's in a better place now, with my Candy. :)
