View Full Version : Do you think Stevie....

...has been reading the message boards? One of them? All of them? Or that Karen or Chris or someone reads them & tell her about what we talk about?

I mean, for years we've been complaining that we would rather hear an upbeat song to close a show rather than HAEWAFY. Now, after ending every tour (with the exception of Timespace) with it since its release, we get SYWBAR&RS and Been a Long Time.

For years we complained that INTK is OK, but we'd rather hear another cover. We get SYWBAR&RS w/ Don & Circle Dance & now Been a Long Time. Yeah, I know that INTK is back in, but still - it was out for those 10 shows for the first time in 24 years.

For years we've been bitching about the black dress. Now she's started busting out more capes & PANTS. PANTS for God's sake. For basically the first time on stage in 30 years.

The hair - "I wish she would put it up, like in the Sara video." Now hair is up some of the time. And curly at times.

I'm not saying she reads what we write & says "oh, well I'd better do this then." She's a big girl, she makes her own choices. But it just seems too coincidental that so many things are happening like many of us were hoping they would. Anyone agree? Think I'm an idiot? Anything?

I don't know...I think a lot of it is coincidental, because I don't think any artist, if they're really still a developing artist, would want to remain stagnant and keep absolutely everything the same, you know? And also, who knows? Maybe the reason we're Stevie fans is because we share similar sensibilities with her.

Stevie said last night that she doesn't do computers. I wouldn't doubt it a bit that someone reads her stuff that we express on boards....Cory is my pick of the litter for this job.

I don't believe Stevie herself, gets on the message boards and reads..but it I wouldn't doubt it that someone close to her does, and might mention a few things here and there.
Stevie really does care about her fans...and I mean, only the diehard one's usually post...pay all their money to go see her...and bladi bladi blah-so I think she would take into consideration what we have to say.
Maybe I'm wrong...but that's just my opinion.

Also, I remember tons of fans saying they wanted sara and we got it. She didn't just say oh lets do sara. There was definitley some modivation there. And I think it was us. Also we know Taku reads.

I never thought so at all, until about 3-4 weeks ago. Then I started thinking about it a lot for a few days. And there has been some coincidences. Plus, like you say, probably everyone else she knows does. So, I think she may have gotten some inkling, at least, recently.
Um...Pants?! Yeah. That's right.

Yeah, I know things change, people evolve. But to do things differently for the first time in 30 years, or the first time in 4 or 5 tours  ? I'm so glad that she's made some changes for whatever reason, but I can't help but think we may have a teeny-tiny bit of influence.

I'm glad you brought this up. I was just thinking about this earlier today.
I absolutely think that someone is reading the boards because we certainly seem to have gotten what we wanted/talked about lately.
Now, with that said, STEVIE, DROP A FEW WORN OUT NUMBERS FROM YOUR SET AND REPLACE THEM WITH SONGS FROM THE WILD HEART and I wouldn't mind hearing Angel or Bella Donna again.
That is all. :)

Consider for a moment opening with...SABLE ON BLONDE. It would actually segue nicely into Dreams if she still wanted to do it that way.
Drop I Need To Know for Nothing Ever Changes, Angel, Bella Donna or some other song not done before (I think she could still do Long Way To Go justice).

I would also love to hear Nothing Ever Changes open the show.

But my all-time fantasy opener would be Crying in the Night -- just the thought of those guitar chords breaking the lights-just-went-down crowd noise gives me shivers.

I'd also love to hear a Rooms on Fire/Fire Burning medley - but have no idea how they would work it out.

Wasn't there an interview recently where Stevie said something about sending Sheryl Crow an email that said something like "Hey Sheryl where have you been?" I think the subject was about Sheryl dating Lance. I don't think STevie reads message boards tho, doubt she has that kind of time. But absolutely one or more in her camp do... too many "coincidences."

I think you're right. I think someone in her circle reads then and relays some info back to her. I believe she tries very hard to please her fans and does so whenever she's able. On that same note, being that Stevie is very strong willed, I think she also has to agree herself with any changes she may make to her wardrobe, set list, etc.

I don't think she reads the boards, but I think people who know her do & yes, I believe word has gotten back to her about different things.

For instance, I wished her a happy birthday on nicksfix.com & I put in there that I hoped the "Rumours" of Fleetwood Mac breaking up were just that "Rumours" & that they weren't. She got like 2,100 happy birthday greetings. Then I read somewhere recently where she said that people are always saying that they (Mac) are breaking up & it just isn't true. So I'm hoping that she had read that one & decided that it needed addressing  or maybe someone reading the boards told her that people were talking about a Mac break-up & she decided to set the record straight.

Gimme a break. She's been in the music business for 30+ years, you aren't selling me on this thin-skinned business. I'd be willing to bet the contents of my bank account that she's tough as nails and can take any criticism sent her way. If her "people" keep her away from the internet and the kind of stuff found on it, it's because of people like that crazy asshole who wanted to kidnap her because he thought she could cure his queerness; not because someone doesn't like one of her songs. Forgive me if I don't find her God-like and want to pay huge sums of money just to be in her presence.

I don't think she's thick skinned at all. One example that comes to mind is Destiny Rules doc, when she immediately got very defensive when Lindsey tried to correct her grammar for Thrown Down. She wasn't having it, and she looked offended.

I agree, I think people shredding SA to bits and pieces would bother her but that's just me (even if she herself puts it down those are still things she wrote and sang and are a part of her). People telling her what she should/shouldn't have in her setlist, making insinuations about her personal life, etc. may not be things she wants to hear.

I think she's tough, too, but I still think she's really sensitive. To be honest, I don't think she's encountered extremely harsh criticism very much. Remember she was devastated when she read the SA reviews? And she changed because of them? I think she's tough but not in the way of people directly criticising her, in her life and all that. I think for a long time, most people she's ever talked to have treated her with fairly, if not excessive, kid gloves. I think her toughness has more to do with ambition, networking, and self promotion qualities than sensitivity to criticism.

Stevie herself said she wrote nothing very memorable for years and has gone on the record (literally) to say she doesn't like Street Angel. If she can say them, certainly her fans can.

I still say it would bother her. It's one thing to critique your own work but for others to shred it is different.

P.S. So Stevie can cure us of our queerness? Good to know! ;)

Exactly. I can say I look ugly all I want, but if someone else said it, it would hurt my feelings. Same thing, pretty simple concept.

Well said Sista! I was going to bring up the SA reviews thing too but I think that would pretty much affect any woman. I do however think Stevie is a bit more emotional but that's not to take away from her toughness. You have to be strong to get through the hardships she's encountered and to come out on the other end where she is today. That woman has more strength than most people I know!

I think Stevie, like most everyone, can be hurt. But I don't think vulnerability equates a lack of toughness.

People who aren't hurt by anything, have shut themselves off. And that's no way to live.

seriously.. why does she have to be either one extreme or the other?? either tough as nails or extremely sensitive?? she's obviously a very emotional person.. if she weren't, she wouldn't be able to write the kinds of songs she does... on the other hand, if she wasn't a little tough, she wouldn't be able to cope with all the BS she went through with FM over the years or battle through the drugs, the weight, etc...

i'm sure she could handle the comments she would read on the internet... but i'm sure others in her camp who are more "computer savvy" filter out the BS- some of which spews out from the very people who frequent this board quite often..

Well I think Stevie knows that there are going to be ppl in this world that either like her or they don't, and I think she has accepted that from day 1. As long as she is being herself and claiming to do what she loves, and she claims to be feeling pretty lucky, then I say rock on!

Nuff said...

Exactly. Just because they may not tell her about the SOTB pics (which I think are very complimentary, btw  ) or our Chiffon Head gift baskets filled with tamborines, scarves, cocaine & brandy deosn't mean that they DON'T say to her "hey, they want to hear a different cover song" or "Paula touched your legwarmer." :)

And hopefully they've told her, "Brian in PA loves 'When I See You Again.'" :D

I can totally see why she'd stay away from reading about herself on the internet. Can you imagine? Another very famous singer I know (okay, not Stevie famous, but she's a huge star in Canada and beyond) once told me that the worst thing a famous person can possibly do is Google themselves. Cause you can sit for hours and hours, and go from emotional euphoria to the point where you think everyone in the world hates you and you want to slit your wrists.

I think Stevie is tough as nails - but I also think she is extremely sensitive about her lyrics and music because they are so personal. She also strikes me as very insecure about herself and her music, despite the huge success she's had, and the multitudes of fans who shower her with love. I can understand that - because I can tell you that if I'm at work, and every single person I work with complements me on something I've done, and ONE person criticizes it, the multitudes of praise are wiped from my psyche, and the only thing that I carry away with me is the criticism.

Can you imagine an entire fan community?? There's tons o love out there... but there is criticism, too. As I said, I don't blame her for staying away.

That being said... I absolutely think people in her entourage read the boards, and I'm sure they pass along the good stuff.

And hopefully tell her to come back to Toronto!

I don't think she's thick skinned at all. One example that comes to mind is Destiny Rules doc, when she immediately got very defensive when Lindsey tried to correct her grammar for Thrown Down. She wasn't having it, and she looked offended.

That's different. You're talking about old wounds there.

I think she's a tough broad too, and probably sensitive more to criticisms of her appearance than her music. There is no way she could have made it this far without having a pretty thick skin. That being said, I don't think she is a stone.
But I believe she is more likely to respond to a criticism of her work with "When was the last time you sold millions of records, Motherf*cker ?" than "It hurts my self esteem, it hurts my everything."

When I was much younger I viewed her more as a helpless, vulnerable person who needed defending (see, the photography worked !), and defended her often and passionately. These days, I don't think of her that way. She can take care of herself.

A few weeks or a month ago (I don't remember when) I posted here that I wanted to hear Stevie do some LZ. When she pulled out Rock and Roll, I almost passed out. I'd like to think (in my world) that our brainwaves are connected, but who knows. Maybe someone reads these things. That was a big coincidence! What are the chances?

Wow...seriously?! That does seem to ring a little bell... I'm telling ya... they're feeding this stuff back to her! Hey, I was on an email list once when we were talking about covers and I mentioned Black Velvet, shortly thereafter she performed at some charity function and did Black Velvet... so I know EXACTLY how you feel! Only not very many fans from the list had seen the charity performance so the impact wasn't as great as RandR is having on this board.

Okay... let's put our next order in...

I Want To See Stevie Wear A Top Hat and A Scarf
and Her Eyes Without Any Shadow (just kidding on that one, even I wouldn't do that)

If she could take any criticism sent her way, why would she stop touring or going on stage when she gained weight? She said that was all people talked about.

I don't want to go over the story again because so many people have already heard it, but when I met Stevie in 2001, I talked to her about the internet because I wanted her to know this is where all of us are. She told me she doesn't own a computer, has no desire to own one, and doesn't like looking at stuff about her on the internet.

This must have changed since she did say she emailed Sheryl Crow, but I don't think she reads the boards.

Yeah, she must have a computer now. She has a digital camera now so she has to have a place to store the data. I don't know about the net but I would not be surprised if she did send emails and IM's sometimes. ;)
