OK, first my rant about Darien Lake. Scroll down to the actual review if you don't care to read my bitching. :) I haven't been there in a few years for a show, so I thought maybe I was mistaken when I said it's the worst venue ever. Nope, I was right all along. First of all - parking & traffic are 10 times worse than Blossom & Post-Gazette combined. Horrific. Took us over an hour to get out even after we waited for about 40 minutes & had a beer in the lot (actually, the lawn where they had us park.)

Secondly, the bag searches border on ridiculous. I had our Sirius radio in my purse, right on top & the chick examined it for about 2 full minutes. I pointed out the Sirius logo to her & told her it's a sattelite radio. She kept turning it over, pushing buttons. If I have recording equipment in my purse, would I have left it right on top? Ass.

From past experiences, I knew we had to stop at the "ID tent" to show ID & get wristbands. So is there a huge sign at the entrance telling everyone they must get a wristband to buy beer? NO. Do they check IDs right after the main entrace to keep things flowing smoothly? NO. They have a tent with no sign on it with no lines, so everyone just crowds in & tries to escape after they get their wrist band. And when people go to get beer & don't have a wristband, they send them away after waiting in a line for 20 minutes to go & wait with the crowd for their band for another 20 minutes. Nice.

We walked in while the Black Crowes were on. They sounded great. Of course, i missed most of them because I was wating in line to pee. That surprisingly only took about 15 minutes. Mark took that plus another 10 minutes to get 2 beers. I have to mention my disgust at the girl who walked into the bathroom barefoot. Add that to the grossest things I've ever seen. Reports on the men's room were worse - not only were they peeing in sinks, but the walls & the floors. Not a good day for flip-flops, boys. Ew.

The crowd. Hmmmm. Well, mostly young people (at 30, I think I was kind of old.) Lots of young wanna-be hippies, stoners, goths, jocks...you name it, they were there. And it seems they were all drunk. REALLY drunk. Falling down/screaming for no reason/bumping into people/singing wrong lyrics so loudly I couldn't hear Tom drunk. It was so f*cking annoying. People were cutting lines too - very classy. I almost did battle with some kid. I called him a piece of **** for cutting in front of me & he was like "I don't care if you yell at me, what do I care." I said "that's real nice, making these people who've been in line for 15 minutes wait longer because you need your food faster." Then the girl in front of me dropped her beer & it went all over his sandaled foot. :) I said "karma's a bitch, babe." He said "you're foot's wet too, so..." and petered off. Whatev. I finally got my beer (the only thing they hadn't run out of at 10pm) & tried to make my way back to my spot on the lawn.

Anyhoo - I vow to never get a lawn seat at DL again. Mark vows to never go to a concert again.

Actual review coming next...

Tom rocks! First time seeing him live & if it weren't for my annoyance with others it would rank as one of the top shows I've seen. He looked & sounded great, the band was tight. Stage is very cool - there's a large screen towering behind them, but it's broken up into several sections/shapes so you see closeups of a few band members at one time. Big screens on the lawn worked great too. The sound was NOT great where we were. May have been better had it not been for drunk/high screeching girl behind me. Good thing I didn't bother bringing my camera to catch video.

Oooooh - merchandise - I didn't buy any, but they did have some nice stuff. Cool shirts, but I just didn't want to pay this time. One baby doll T $35, 4 or 5 regular T's $30, a wife beater for about $25, mug $15, keychain $10, poster $10.

Sorry, another eww thing - there was an employee standing in front of us checking wristbands when people walked by with alcohol. If they didn't have one, he would either a) dump the drink on the lawn OR b) give it to the drunk girl he made out with all night. They probably both have Type 1 herpes on their mouths now. Ew. :(

Tom is very gracious, talks to the crowd a lot. Thanks us after practically every song. Wore jeans with a jacket for the first song, then took off the jacket & played the rest of the night in a T shirt & vest. The band was incredible. Benmont & Campbell were there, I'm not sure who else cuz I couldn't hear the intros very well (again, drunk/high girl.) And I swear to you that Tom twirled 3 times (can't remember which song) with his arms outstretched. I said to Mark "he's channeling Stevie in Cleveland right now." Mark said  .

Here's the setlist. I missed a few during pee break.

Listen to Her Heart - love this tune
You Don't Know How It Feels - I think I got a contact high from all the joints that were lit up for this one.
Breakdown - sexay.
Free Falling - eh, I've had my fill of this one.
New Song - Turn This Car Around - nice, slow, dark.
I Won't Back Down - good
Last Dance with MJ - this rocked live. Wow. Kick ass harmonica too.
Handle Me with Care - surprised to hear this Wilbury's tune. He did it very well.

*pee break - missed 2, maybe 3 tunes. mark recognized none of them & said one was basically just a really long jam. One was Melinda, apparently a new tune.*

Learning to Fly - I caught most of this - slower version. Gorgeous.
Don't Come Around Here No More - can't help think of the girls on backup. :) This rocked hard too.
Refugee - I adore the lyrics in this song, so I was thrilled.
Runnin' Down a Dream - I think of the cartoon video the entire song. Love it.

Encore:
You Wreck Me (GREAT!)
American Girl (WOOT! That's the ****!)

Got a great review in the paper, and I'm so glad I finally got to see Petty live. If a boot ever surfaces, keep me in mind.

Well I was seriously contemplating going to that show - sounds like the aggravation of the venue would have bested me though and I would not have enjoyed myself :o

Glad it was a good show though!!

Oh, man!!!! I forgot you were seeing Petty. Sorry about all the messy, messy, messy, people. It was funny when you said it, though. If they didn't have one, he would either a) dump the drink on the lawn OR b) give it to the drunk girl he made out with all night.
  Lame, but funny.
Reading the set list made me drool...glad you got to see him. :)

Glad you had a good time and it sounds like a great show! Just out of curiosity, did he perform Girl On LSD?

And Paula, if you've got all the torrent stuff up and running, there's a fantastic Petty/Dylan soundboard up on DimeADozen right now.

No clue - it could have been one of the ones I missed.

And I haven't done the torrent thing yet - your tutorial is still saved in my PMs. :D

Beer issues more like it. I wasn't hammered, but I had a pleasant buzz. :D I can't hold it like I used to in the olden days. :distress:

Thanks for the great review, Paula.

Geez, it sounds like security was a bunch of tossers though.

I'll be seeing Petty in August. I've never seen him, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Great review and sounds like you had a good time, despite the drunken idiots....

Tom's one of my favorites to see live. Why isn't he coming to Texas???

Great review. Frothing at the mouth for August 24th to come so I can go see him at the Sleep Train. (Have eighth row tix)

Tom does seem to attract the crazies. At the last Petty show I went to (Anthology tour) there was a young couple who were freak dancing (some serious bumping and grinding, let me tell you) the whole time, some crazed hippie woman in a straw hat passing out bottles of bubbles ("Bubbles! Bubbles, everyone! Come on and blow some bubbles!"), and some asshole in front of me smoking a bong.

The show itself was great of course. Petty rocks!
