The transcript from The Today Show.
"Lauer: I'm only asking, isn't there a possibility that — do you examine the possibility that these things do work for some people? That yes, there are abuses. And yes, maybe they've gone too far in certain areas. Maybe there are too many kids on Ritalin. Maybe electric shock —
Cruise: Too many kids on Ritalin? Matt.
Lauer: I'm just saying. But aren't there examples where it works?
Cruise: Matt. Matt, Matt, you don't even — you're glib. You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, okay? That's what I've done. Then you go and you say where's the medical test? Where's the blood test that says how much Ritalin you're supposed to get?'

What an irresponisble idiot. My ex's brother was a paranoid schizophrenic, if only he would have thought about vitamins and exercise. He went off his meds once for a while and started throwing furniture out of his 3rd story window.

True. But if you were set on being a huge movie star in the eighties, might you have had a beard? And don't say you wouldn't, cause how can you know.
Scientology - unfortunate, but...it can't take away from the joy Tom has given me. And what about your girl? She AGREED to be a beard, for success, fame, etc. Just as big a "crime" in my book. At least comparable to Tom's beard needings. And don't say, oh, she would have been just as big without him/that. I'm sure she might have, either way she's very talented and deserves to have been. But she still made that heinous choice, which is not so different than Tom's. ie, I want to be famous and successful, and I will do what I think I need to do to achieve that.

His constant touting of Scientology makes him an utter dick in my eyes. That **** is dangerous and the idea that some may get turned onto it because of him is very scary.
No one knows the details of what went on with her and Toothy. Maybe she did marry him to be his beard, maybe he just led her on in the beginning and got her to marry him. No one knows for sure, but we can guess. But we certainly can deduce a lot of things from this current Katie Holmes business. It's as obvious as the color of the sky. If Kidman did marry him to be his beard, that's not a very attractive thing, but at least she doesn't act like a complete and utter fool for the world to look at and laugh at, and she conducts herself with dignity in public. Something Cruise can't do lately, or so it seems.

Well, Confuscious said if you try to work on the mind with the mind how can you avoid immense confusion? If your mind is ill then how can you fix it with that sick mind? You can't.
One of my childhood friends became schizophrenic. If she is not on medication she eventually becomes catatonic. After flipping out believing everyone is plotting against her.

Good, yes. I will discount your "I would not hire a beard" thing, because, well, you're not tom cruise in the 80's, or gay. Of course you wouldn't, as many people wouldn't.
Remember, Tom didn't act like a fool either, those other times. I, personally, blame his recent oafishness on psychological pressure, ie, now everyone knows he's supergay, but he feels constricted, like he can't possibly reveal that. Bad? Yes. Ill advised? certainly. But I just feel bad for him. His actions speak of a man in panic, and no one should ever panic because they are gay, in an ideal society.
Your point about Scientology is well taken. But I guess, like any lame religion, he feels it's helped him and wants to share. Whatever with that. Lame.
Overall, I think he's an ok person, and tries to be. Unfortunately scientology is the foundation for that. I agree that people should not be swayed because of what he says about it.
I must say, though, with all the celebrity crap out there, he is refreshing for me. He seems nice, he tries to help people, he is somewhat humble, etc. I know that sounds....pollyanna....but... That's just how I feel. :)
For everything he's ever done, this backlash seems very severe.

I think the backlash is so severe because he is acting insane and lashing out at people. He was a complete dick to Lauer, then there was Brooke, then there was Oprah, and Leno. If he is gay he is hurting his career more by the way he is acting now than he would by just coming out.

Cruise: I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology.
And as far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, here's a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science.
Lauer: But Tom, if she said that this particular thing helped her feel better, whether it was the antidepressants or going to a counselor or psychiatrist, isn't that enough?
Cruise: Matt, you have to understand this. Here we are today, where I talk out against drugs and psychiatric abuses of electric shocking people, okay, against their will, of drugging children with them not knowing the effects of these drugs. Do you know what Aderol is? Do you know Ritalin? Do you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?
Lauer: The difference is —
Cruise: No, no, Matt.
Lauer: This wasn't against her will, though.
Cruise: Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt —
Lauer: But this wasn't against her will.
Cruise: Matt, I'm asking you a question.
Lauer: I understand there's abuse of all of these things.
Cruise: No, you see. Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.
Lauer: Aren't there examples, and might not Brooke Shields be an example, of someone who benefited from one of those drugs?
Cruise: All it does is mask the problem, Matt. And if you understand the history of it, it masks the problem. That's what it does. That's all it does. You're not getting to the reason why. There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.
Lauer: So, postpartum depression to you is kind of a little psychological gobbledygook —
Cruise: No. I did not say that.
Lauer: I'm just asking what you, what would you call it?
Cruise: No. No. Abso— Matt, now you're talking about two different things.
Lauer: But that's what she went on the antidepressant for.
Cruise: But what happens, the antidepressant, all it does is mask the problem. There's ways, [with] vitamins and through exercise and various things... I'm not saying that that isn't real. That's not what I'm saying. That's an alteration of what I'm saying. I'm saying that drugs aren't the answer, these drugs are very dangerous. They're mind-altering, antipsychotic drugs. And there are ways of doing it without that so that we don't end up in a brave new world. The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation, okay. And she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn't understand in the same way that you don't understand it, Matt.
Lauer: But a little bit of what you're saying Tom is, you say you want people to do well. But you want them do to well by taking the road that you approve of, as opposed to a road that may work for them.
Cruise: No, no, I'm not.
Lauer: Well, if antidepressants work for Brooke Shields, why isn't that okay?
Cruise: I disagree with it. And I think that there's a higher and better quality of life. And I think that, promoting — for me personally, see, you're saying what, I can't discuss what I wanna discuss?
Lauer: No. You absolutely can.
Cruise: I know. But Matt, you're going in and saying that, that I can't discuss this.

Cruise can't articulate his point because he's been brainwashed and he really doesn't know the reasons behind what's been planted in his mind. I know that sounds extreme but I have seen this phenomenon first hand and it is scary. In The Forum the leader somehow gets people to think that all that has been written in books and throughout history is meaningless. It is very difficult to describe how that happened because it is like you've been in an altered state. It seems like something similar has happened with Tom.
I do feel sorry for him, actually. His meltdown is really sad, I'm scared for him. I wonder if he could get away from those people ever. What they do is first tear you down and then rebuild you up the way they want you. Then you are dependent on them for your self-esteem and sense of worth. It isn't really a religion and that is the saddest part, the whole deception.

If I can just remind you that it was not that long ago when you were preaching that Rx drugs were bad, evil, and that you were loathe to take them, etc. How is what Tom Cruise said any different than that. I think he was pointing out the over use of them rather than the effect they have. I say on MSNBC tonight that 80% of those in psychotherapy are also given drugs - that is scary.
But, I do think Mr. Cruise has no business even alluding to being a doctor.

Have you watched the entire video? It doesn't sound like it and your interpretation of what he's saying does not gell with the Church of Scientology one bit. My views on prescription drugs couldn't be more different than his. He thinks they're completely evil and that psychiatry is wrong, which is the foundation of Scientology. I do not. I think that prescription drugs do help people, but I also think that the drug industry practically forcefeeds them to make money and also keeps people sick in order for them to keep taking the drugs. I don't take them and it's my choice. Unlike him, I'm not oblivious to the fact that many drugs work and help people. If I agree with anyone, it's Matt Lauer.

Well, I know that, but my point was he is not the one bringing all of this up to any significant extent. The reporters are bringing it up and he is commenting on what he believes, which any other person would do. So, they are going after him a bit on this and I think that is unfair.

I agree, but it still doesn't excuse how dangerous and uninformed his statements are. They're coming out of his mouth, regardless if he's being asked or not, and he needs to take responsibility for any uproar or controversy they may provoke. He doesn't seem like a total fool, he knows full well how Scientology is viewed by many and he knows full well that it's classified as a cult in too many countries to count. He must know that the Church of Scientology has their members sign a contract that says the Church can inflict bodily harm against them. He must know that they operated glorified concentration camps in European countries. If he wants to discuss these things, do it. But do it in a better way than saying Scientology is right, psychiatry is evil, just take vitamins and exercise and all will be well with you. He's glorifying it and that's dangerous, imo.

The last time I checked, no one is forcing him to make these statements. No one is forcing him to be so inarticulate about them, either. No one came out and asked him what he thought about Brooke Shields and her use of Paxil, he went after her all by himself. Hopefully he saw a video of his appearance on Today and will be a bit wiser when being asked such things the next time around.

I don't think many are going to stop taking prescription drugs cold turkey because Toothy Cruise said so. Yes it is, but the people dumb enough to stop taking medicine because TC says to do so are the ones who probably need to be on it the most. Dear Mr. Cruise,
I write you because of your recent comments regarding mentally ill persons, psychiatry, prescription drugs and "anti-psychotic drugs." While I respect your passionate beliefs, I must disagree with them.
Some psychiatrists are good, some psychiatrists are bad. Just like people in any other profession (Good actress: Katie Holmes...Bad actress: Nicole Kidman). [;)] While there are unscrupulous things occurring within the pharmaceutical industry, making a blanket statement that all medications used to treat mental illness (or "anti-psychotic drugs," in your words) are harmful is incorrect and potentially harmful. You are not a certified doctor of any degree. Such medications can do far more than "mask" the problem. Chemical imbalances do indeed exist.
I am lucky enough to have a wonderful psychiatrist at this point. Before him, I saw three psychiatric doctors who did not fit my needs. I have been put on the wrong medications, too much or too little of medications, in the past. Upon taking any medication I have always researced the drug in question thoroughly. For me, a combination of therapy and medications works best. I still have my quirks and problems...the best analogy I can present to you is this: life for me without "anti-psychotic drugs" is akin to walking a tightrope when you're in a wheelchair. Life with the proper medications can be likened to walking a tightrope with a safety net underneath, walking normally.
In short, I am an informed individual who has made my own decisions regarding treatment of my problems. Please, in the future when you are speaking out against such "evils," do not assume that you are supremely knowledgable and most others are ignorant. Good day!
Regards,
Justin

I think it's quite interesting to read about the origins of scientology:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology
"Other important teachings that even new Scientologists are likely to encounter include the existence of "suppressive persons", whose destructive actions can directly impede the Scientologist's progress, and the evils of psychiatry: Scientology says "psychs" have caused us grave problems for millions of years"
Thus Tom's recent remarks.
This is interesting too:
"Those that reach the higher teachings (OT III) within the Church of Scientology will learn all about Xenu, the evil intergalactic ruler who implanted "thetans" or alien spirits, in earth's volcanoes 75 million years ago, after which they escaped and invaded human bodies. The ultimate belief of Scientology is that you are possessed by the spirits of aliens murdered 75 million years ago by "Xenu" and you have to exorcise these spirits. The cost of reaching OT III approaches $360,000."

The dangerous part of Tom's statements, in my opinion, is his view that Scientology is the one and only way to "cure" substance abuse. I wonder how he would feel if he did a surprise visit to a couple of Narconons. One where they wouldn't have time to "clean" everything up because he was coming.
When you are in the public eye, celebrity, whatever, you do hold a certain responsibility to the people who pay attention to you. That doesn't mean you have to be a perfect person, but if you're going to talk about very important things, like medication and mental illness, you should really know what the hell you're talking about. I'm so disgusted with him and I can't understand why he won't just shut the **** up. I guess it's so people like us can talk about him. Gah, he makes me ill.

Where has it gone?
That's not the point. The actual point he was trying to make was that her career went nowhere because she wasn't on the right spiritual track and that her involvement with psychiatry and anti-depression medication was a part of it. And I would hardly claim her career went nowhere, she's a household name who had a popular sitcom, made lots of movies, was a model, and is now starring in a hit show on Broadway. If he was comparing her career to his, well, yeah, she went nowhere, but how many have had careers like his?

Dear Mr. Cruise,
I write you because of your recent comments regarding mentally ill persons, psychiatry, prescription drugs and "anti-psychotic drugs." While I respect your passionate beliefs, I must disagree with them.
Good day!
Regards,
Justin
P.S. A Ms. Amber Ghidossi is your biggest fan and supporter. Please pay her a visit.

He could talk about Scientology everytime he wants, I don't really care but when you go on National TV saying that psychiatry hasn't any value, and that he knows its history (I really doubt it, especially after the the Adolophine incident), when there are still so many mental illnesses that can be cured till now, unfortunately only through medicines, I think it's absolutely irresponsible. Especially if there's somewhere some young severely depressed Cruise fan who's under a cure and decides abruptly to stop it.

No.
I think he should be cut some slack.I agree with you and....
I'm gonna be brave and stick my neck out here....I agree with him, to a point. However, there are better ways of getting your point across, if you actually want people to see your point. Being in the medical profession for almost 20 years you tend to see things from that point of view. I DO believe that there are too many kids on Ritalin. My child was hyperactive to a point where the teachers would stack books behind his chair to keep him from rocking (probably from boredom). I was prodded into taking him to a child psychologist who promptly put him on Ritalin. He was now officially inn "the zone"...dilated eyes, blank stares...I couldn't handle it. After three months, I took him off, told them to put him in a smaller class or hire a "special teacher" which is state law here in Texas for a special needs child. He is now a happy, healthy 20 year old having the time of his life going to college in Florida. (Graduating #1 in his class) Did he really need Ritalin? Don't think so! Just more teachers with better pay and exceptional patience. On
the other hand, if Tom had the experience of being in lock down cornered by a true paranoid schizophrenic with no way out, I believe his opinion would change! Been there, done that and happy to say that I survived unscathed. Postpartum depression? Sure there's baby blues. What mom doesn't feel that? How could you not go through that kind of hormonal surge, then depletion, without emotion? Postpartum psychosis...that's a horse of a different color. And I'll ride that one, too! Andrea Yates perfect example. I can't say that I wouldn't have gone from depression to psychosis if you made me live in a bus with all those kids. All they showed on TV was the nice house...not all the stuff that led up to it. If her husband knew, why did he keep crawling on top of her and making all those babies!??!! I could go on with that, but I won't. Antidepressants....Still there! I DO believe that with therapy to address the underlying problem (or a gun to allieviate the someone who's causing it!) is essential. There's room for all of us opinionated people in the world....as long as we express that opinion with R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!! for each other. :)

No, he doesn't, imo. Matt Lauer is the one who brought up good points by saying that psychiatric drugs do work on some people and that there are too many children on drugs such as ritalin. All Tom Cruise did was spew Scientology talking points and recommend vitamins and exercise in place of any professional treatment. Tom Cruise falters by completely dismissing psychiatry as a whole.

"I just came from the WAR OF THE WORLDS press junket, which featured a joint press conference between Spielberg and Tom Cruise. There were two highlights - that it took 20 minutes for a Katie Holmes question to be asked (Spielberg timed it) was one. The best, though, was the reporter from the Boston Phoenix asking Tom Cruise if the fact that the aliens in the film have been on Earth for a million years waiting for the invasion resonated with him due to Scientology’s belief in aliens.
Tom sputtered for a few moments and got very visibly annoyed (he was otherwise in super-creepy cheerful mode the whole time) and denied the alien/Scientology connection, asked if the Boston Phoenix was a reputable paper and then listed about four Scientology books the guy should read to educate himself on the matter.
I was not able to see if Thetan-clear thugs took care of the reporter after the press conference."

Actor Tom Cruise has been criticised by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), following remarks he made on US TV attacking psychiatric medicine.
"It was irresponsible for Mr Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views," it said.
Cruise called psychiatry a "pseudo science", after NBC host Matt Lauer questioned the 42-year-old's stance against anti-depressant drugs.
The actor criticised Brooke Shields for taking drugs for post-natal depression.
The APA, which represents more than 36,000 physicians specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, challenged Cruise's assertion that psychiatry lacks scientific merit.
"Rigorous, published, peer-reviewed research clearly demonstrates that treatment (of mental illness) works," said a statement released by the association.
"It is unfortunate that in the face of this remarkable scientific and clinical progress that a small number of individuals and groups persist in questioning its legitimacy."
It raised concerns that the Hollywood actor's remarks could "deter people with mental illness from getting the help they need".
Heated debate
Cruise, who is currently promoting the Steven Spielberg blockbuster War of the Worlds, is a follower of the Church of Scientology which is against psychiatric medicine.
On Friday, the actor entered a heated discussion with Today host Matt Lauer, when he suggested some people could benefit from drugs such as Ritalin, which is prescribed to children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
"You're glib. You don't even know what Ritalin is," Cruise told Lauer on Friday night's show.
"Psychiatry is a pseudo science," he said. "You don't know the history of psychiatry - I do," he added.
War of the Worlds is set to open across the US and UK later this week.

The way psychiatry works is they try the drugs and if they work then they deduce that they fixed a chemical imbalance. This is oversimplified. It is not like you can slice open a living brain to watch the chemical changes take place!
Mentally ill people who do not get help are more likely to be unemployed, without meaningful relationships, and worse - suicidal. For him to be so callous about psychiatry makes me very very angry and I am glad the APA spoke out.

He's not more original as a preacher than as an actor. That's exactly what a German journalist told him about Scientology, making him furious. Spielberg had to come in Cruise's defense after his outburst and said that Cruise's involvement with Scientology was as noble as his own involvement with Shoah Visual History Foundation... . Poor Steven, he has to be quite stressed these days.

Tom Cruise: We're not alone
BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- Hollywood actor Tom Cruise not only battles creatures from outer space in his latest film "War of the Worlds", he also believes aliens exist, he told a German newspaper on Wednesday.
Asked in an interview with the tabloid daily Bild if he believed in aliens, Cruise said: "Yes, of course. Are you really so arrogant as to believe we are alone in this universe?
"Millions of stars, and we're supposed to be the only living creatures? No, there are many things out there, we just don't know," Cruise, 42, said in the interview published in German.
Cruise is a follower of the Scientology church founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, and his recent willingness to discuss the faith has raised eyebrows in the media.
Most controversially, Cruise criticized actress Brooke Shields for revealing she had taken antidepressants. An official Scientology Web site argues that people should live drug-free.
Cruise also dismissed psychiatry as a "pseudo science", invoking the ire of the American Psychiatric Association that called the remarks "irresponsible".
But many scientologists feel they are unfairly criticized, arguing that although many believe in the concept of aliens, it is not such an unreasonable proposition, and that the side effects of some medication are not fully understood.
Cruise's new film "War of the Worlds" is based on British writer H.G. Wells' 1898 story of the invasion of Earth by Martians.

Shields blasts Cruise for 'rant'
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Actress Brooke Shields on Friday fired back at Tom Cruise after the actor criticized her for having revealed she had taken an antidepressant to cope with post-natal depression.
Shields called Cruise's comments "a disservice to mothers everywhere" in an opinion column for The New York Times.
"To suggest that I was wrong to take drugs to deal with my depression, and that instead I should have taken vitamins and exercised shows an utter lack of understanding about postpartum depression and childbirth in general," the actress wrote.
"If any good can come of Mr. Cruise's ridiculous rant, let's hope that it gives much-needed attention to a serious disease."
During interviews to promote his new film, "War of the Worlds," Cruise has discussed his skepticism of psychiatry to explain his belief in the teachings of the Church of Scientology, founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.
In one such interview on NBC's "Today" show, he was asked about his recent criticism of Shields, a film and television star now appearing as Roxie Hart in the London staging of the musical "Chicago".
"Before I was a Scientologist, I never agreed with psychiatry," Cruise said. "And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology. ... And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science."
Disputing the effectiveness of antidepressants generally, Cruise said, "all it does is mask the problem." He added, "There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance."
Shields said her doctor prescribed Paxil for postpartum depression after she experienced extreme despair and had suicidal thoughts following the birth of her daughter, Rowan Francis, in the spring of 2003.
"I wasn't thrilled to be taking drugs. In fact, I prematurely stopped taking them and had a relapse that almost led me to drive my car into a wall with Rowan in the backseat. But the drugs, along with weekly therapy sessions, are what saved me -- and my family," she said.
Shields is author of "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression."

Good for her and the NYT for letting her write the column. There are still misinformed people like Cruise out there who think that depression is just something you can "get over." It never ceases to amaze me.

Tom Cruise has gone insane! I've never really liked him, but now I can't stand him! It doesn't help matters that I am a big Brooke Shields fan...
Who does he think he is? I think he is an ass hole. He doesn't know anything about science yet feels like he can just make this big statements as fact. Yeah right!
I used to like Cruise but since he fired Pat Kingsley, he has really shown his ass.

And because The Massive Genital Wart on the Crotch of the Grand Diva of Fug is zany in a very entertaining way. She doesn't dick around and she doesn't profess to be an expert on the subject of psychiatry withut holding any degree or tell people to study a religion that worships the souls of slaughtered aliens. Bitch is crazy, but not that crazy.
Speaking of which, have you seen Being Bobby Brown, or whatever the hell it's called?

Bits and pieces.
I think it's been established that he must love Whitney to death since he practically fisted her areshole in lieu of laxatives. That's love, baby.

That was too much information. I watched some of it last night and well...train wreck. He's textbook abusive spouse, IMO. He wouldn't even let a guy give her a massage. I also find it hard to believe that he's not just still with her for the money. I mean, how big a hit was My Prerogative?

My roommate just said "Tom Cruise is an asshole I hate him." and proceeded to tell me what he said about Brooke that we all know about here. She was so pissed off, "who does he think he is?".
Her sister had post pardum after her first child and had to take medication to recover. It's a very scary illness and very frightening to think what might have happened without the meds.

You know, in thinking about it, Cruise's kids aren't his biological children. So he has no idea what it's like to live with a woman who is postpartum. What a jerk.

Yeah, exactly, i was comparing crazy to crazy. My point was, why is Tom getting so much flak, when he has, for years, been the nicest guy ever?
I mean, Courtney Love has constantly been way less than desireable, dangerous and bitchy, in fact, but Diss loves her. I just think y'all are making waaay to big a deal. Everyone has to whack out sometime.
Because he's not simply an actor he is a star. People didn't simply admire him but wanted to be him or have sex with him, live his life or have him as a son or as a father. He's a symbol of the good American boy. And usually, you reach such a status thanks to a variable talent, some intelligence, and a huge machine that boost you up and keep you there. But what happens when the person, seems to be different by the image? The castle starts to tumble down. People want to know how fake all the construction is. Media right now understand that they can earn more destroying the star they helped to build. And he's not helping. As soon as he was alone in front of the world, he made mistake after mistake. He's showing a very different repressed personality, Imo. At the end, movie moguls would do all they can to save him, because he's a money machine, but if you think that MI3 got very close to be cancelled, you can see how they're worried too.
