I was just wondering why Lindsey changed his look in '78. IE shave the beard, trim the hair. I've always heard that it was his response to the punk movement and that he wanted that new wave look. this true?

I've alway suspected it, though Lindsey denies it. An interview from Musician Magazine in 1981:
MUSICIAN: Your stage demeanor has changed tremendously in the past five years. The guy with the peasant shirt and the beard and the curly hair of a few years ago hardly seems like the same person as the one on the Tusk tour, with the gray suit and short hair and the demonic stare fixed at the audience. Did that change come about as the result of any groups you'd seen or listened to?
BUCKINGHAM: No, absolutely not. I'm not even aware most times of what I'm doing when I'm up there doing that.
MUSICIAN: But what about the change in appearance?
BUCKINGHAM: Well, I decided to cut my hair long before everyone else did. It wasn't necessarily to look punk or anything. I was just tired of the beard, so I shaved it. Then the hair didn't look right without the beard, so I cut the hair. It's all been gradual. Found a couple of new clothes stores, started buying some new suits... As far as the movements, it's funny, because I used to do more of that when I was playing bass in Fritz. I think maybe when I first joined the band, it was such a new thing, and I wasn't sure of my role, I just sort of withdrew into the back. It's not something that wasn't there before, as far as the stage presence; it just wasn't coming out for a long time. It was sort of beaten back, I guess.
-------
Although I found this quote from the 2003 Mojo article interesting:
"But Buckingham was not for soothing. Engineer Ken Caillat, a Tusk co-producer and the boffin behind the DVD version due out early next year, still frowns on the guitarist’s contrariness: "He was a maniac. [...] Early on, he came in and he’d freaked out in the shower and cut off all his hair with nail scissors. He was stressed. And into sound destruction."

His suit & cropped hair look for the start of the Tusk tour did sort of resemble the David Byrne thing. There may have been a conscious influence there.
It may have been purely aesthetic, too: the Turner looks better with the suit than it would have looked with the shaggy hair, beard & kimono. That latter look went better with the Les Paul.

Hey, I insist that I was born in the wrong friggin' generation. My parents generation got greats like Lindsey Buckingham, Tom Petty, Walter Egan, Warren Zevon, etc... My generation? F*cking Britney Spears. :distress:

I'd LOVE it if the maniac is coming back the same way on his new solo-album OR/AND Mac-album....Shave of everything with a guitar-pick and back into sounddestruction.................

And I'm sorry but the "Tusk" look is the only Lindsey look that I don't like.
I'll even take the somewhat pudgy look of circa '82 over the gaunt and androgynous look of Tusk.
But we all have our opinions. :)

Except of course that my opinion is right, so there!
You can have pudgy Mirage Lindsey then, but only the version in my avatar, aka Terrorist Lindsey.

So there? I don't care for Tusk Lindsey, either, although when I watch him live he does look better. It's mainly the eye makeup I don't like.

There were several different Tusk looks, particularly on tour. Which ones do you like, & which ones do you not like? I'd like to know, amber!

I love the Tusk eyeliner...but I'm weird that way. I love the Tango era too. I'm not a huge fan of the fro era, but some pics are hot. I don't like the Dance era pudge. :distress:

Lindsey is hottest in the Tusk period when he has no eyemakeup, no New Wave suit, no clothes... oops, I mean regular clothes, tight T-shirts, jeans. Like he is in the documentary.

Oh yes, I am liking pink-shirt Lindsey too
And then there's the Going Home documentary featuring those Tusk outtakes with Lindsey on the floor in that pink shirt, recording I don't know what....

I don't see why so many people say that Lindsey was pudgy during The Dance. In all of the pictures I've seen of him from that time he just looks healthy. Not fat and not thin.

Several Tusk looks on tour? What the "gray suit look" and the "brown suit look"? It's all the same to me: Gaunt and androgynous (read not attractive).

I really don't think he looked androgynous at all. Apart from the eye make-up (which many stage actors would wear), he's got really short hair and a smart suit on. It's not exactly glam or new romantic now is it?
I just think he looked exceptionally cool round that time.

Alright!! Sexy, Tusk era LB pics!!!! :blob2: You posted one of my fave pics, Nancy, that cowboy hat, good lawd!
I say pudgy, because compared to today, he was a little heavier...not huge or anything, just got a lil pudge goin' on.

I love that pic! That white jacket made the rounds in Europe in the spring of 1980, like the June 12 Brussels show. Sometimes he wore a black undershirt with it, & sometimes a purple shirt with collar. I used to think Stevie wore all black only at the final show of the Tusk Tour, but as it turns out she also wore all black at that same Brussels show -- at least for "Rhiannon" & several other tunes. She still had her white "Edge of 17" cape for "Say You Love Me," "The Chain" & "Don't Stop."

If only Lindsey had realized the way this look put women into a frenzy, perhaps he would have adopted it before the last shows!
Tusk Lindsey is my absolute fave!!! I'm not too fond of the eyeliner, but those pics Mari posted are HOT!

I guess I'm just a little biased towards the Dance era Lindsey, since that was when I fell in love with him. (drool)
Didn't know who the heck he was before that.

Yes, I think he was very handsome in "the Dance" concert DVD. I like his style there. He looks normal sized to me, not pudgy at all. The first time I saw him was actually in the "Live in Boston" DVD and he's like thin, rugged, and older (but appearing many years younger) in that. But in "the Dance" he looks all classy and suave and the hair is sexy. He reminds me of my man in that vid! :xoxo:
The pictures of Lindsey during the "Tusk" period that are being posted are really too, too hot. I can't believe it. It's so out of my character to be so enamored by someone's looks. But I still love the music first and foremost of course.

Same here. I remember just staring at the screen, watching him play "Go Insane," and just thinking he was one of the most attractive men I'd ever seen. Combine that with his talent (which is a part of the attractiveness in its own way) and who could resist?

His talent is a HUGE part of why I find him so attractive (although his gorgeous eyes, high cheekbones, and all those curls don't hurt anything). But of course, talent isn't everything. Otherwise I'd be having erotic dreams about Tom Petty... and that just ain't happening. :o
