PETA killed animals from shelter
> Associated Press
> Published on: 06/24/05
NORFOLK, Va. — Officials of two North Carolina counties have stopped turning over shelter animals to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, saying they were surprised to learn the group killed the cats and dogs instead of trying to find them homes.
Two PETA employees are charged with dumping dead animals they collected in eastern North Carolina counties in a shopping center's garbage bins. Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk, Va., and Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., have a hearing scheduled for July 19 on charges of animal cruelty, disposal of dead animals and trespassing.
Northampton County officials decided last week to stop working with PETA until the case against the two employees is resolved. The Bertie County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to cut all ties to the Norfolk, Va.-based group, despite a written apology from its president.
Bertie County Manager Zee Lamb said Tuesday that he believed the animals were being taken for evaluation and "the ones that were adoptable would be adopted," and euthanasia would be only a last resort. Sue Gay, health director for Northampton County, said she assumed the same.
Documents filed with the state of Virginia showed that PETA euthanized about 6,100 domestic animals from 2001-03. Daphna Nachminovitch, director of PETA's domestic animal and wildlife department, said she didn't know how many were from North Carolina.
She also said she didn't know how many animals taken from North Carolina shelters were adopted or euthanized. However, the letter from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk to Bertie commissioners said: "We were able to place a small number of animals but the condition of most rural strays and given-up animals makes that impossible."
All animals PETA accepts are supposed to be examined by a veterinarian, but even some healthy animals may be euthanized if PETA cannot find them homes, Nachminovitch said.
"Did we euthanize some animals who could have been adopted? Maybe," Nachminovitch said. "The point is that good homes are few and far between. Our aim here was to stop them from dying an agonizing death."
The organization has said it began offering to take stray animals from agencies in poor, rural counties where authorities had been putting them to sleep by gassing or shooting them. Newkirk said last week that the organization uses a fast-acting lethal injection.
Since 2001, PETA has taken animals from shelters in Bertie, Hertford and Northampton counties and the town of Windsor.
PETA spent $250,000 improving Bertie County's shelter and $65,000 on improvements in Northampton County and provided more than $9,000 to an Ahoskie veterinarian who euthanized animals, Nachminovitch said.
The organization has stayed in touch with Bertie and Northampton officials in hopes of mending the relationships, she said.
"One of our people made a very bad mistake, and I don't want the animals to suffer for it," Nachminovitch said.

It reminded me of that twisted mother****er from Boston last year who was going around tying dogs up and throwing them into the river. People are sick, I don't know how anyone could ever kill an animal and be able to sleep at night. I weep when I drive by other people's roadkill, for cripes sake.

I didn't hear about him. :(
In other news, Mufy got some new toys shipped to him yesterday. He got a new scratcher toy that's like a big ramp. It has a hole underneath the high side with a dangling mouse in it. Well, there was a mouse in there but he already pulled it off of its string. Took him a good, oh, five whole minutes. He's a punk. When I was putting the toy together he looked into the hole and was very startled. Hehe. Naturally he wasn't scared for long.
He also got a new attachment for his fishing toy, it has feathers, his favorite, and I can't wait to play with him with it. He was purring loudly over the scratcher this morning. What a cutie.
If anyone ever tried to harm him I'd fry their nuts.

There goes any of the credibility PETA ever had... which wasn't much. PETA lost all credibility with me when they came out against fishing last year. There are so many battles that need to be fought when it comes to animal rights (the slaughter of seal pups in Canada, Japanese whaling, etc.) that wasting time on something like recreational fishing is completely foolish. I really think that their publicity stunts do more harm than good when it comes to animal rights. They are seen as a fringe group, which turns off a lot of people. I give money to groups like the World Wildlife Fund but PETA doesn't get anything from me.

I read a story recently about two kittens that were thrown from a car going about 50mph on a highway. They both survived but one had to be euthanized. There are some disgusting people out there.

I find PETA a misguided and bordering-on-psycho group, but from reading the article I got the impression that the animals they took were going to get "gassed or shot" anyway, which would have indeed been worse.
Don't get me wrong. I am a cat lover. Putting my cat Oreo to sleep a few months ago was the hardest thing I'd ever done. I held him as he died and sobbed in the office for a good half hour, and then I embarrassed myself today when I brought my new cat to the vet for a little checkup and started crying remembering when I took Oreo there for the last time. And I'm crying right now thinking about it.
I'd only be upset if the shelters they took the animals from would have found homes for them, and so the injections were needless.

I weep when I drive by other people's roadkill, for cripes sake.Sometimes I think I'm the only one who has a hard time seeing that! It's so common that it seems like people don't even pay attention. It's awful to see something on the side of the road, and even worse when it's in the road and people continue to drive over it. :(
Anyway, I always have thought PETA was on the crazy side. I still have to say that I'm glad those animals didn't have to die violent deaths, but I think there should have been a way to not have to euthanize them. I don't think that was morally right.

I'm amazed at how people think themselves to be so much more important than animals. People are animals.

"Will innocent people get executed? Of course some will, but that's par for the course. No need to get rid of the institution."

I'm not exactly sure what the rules of civil procedure say for it, but it has something to do with the fact that some interstates, etc. are maintained by the state and it is the responsibility of the game warden to remove the animals and discard certain parts in certain ways; especially deer. Makes no sense to me...but I guess it also has to do with disease control and stuff.

I'm interested to know your stance on swatting at mosquitoes.Mosquitoes spread deadly diseases. It's a matter of self-defense. If an animal's not hurting you than I think it should be left alone unless you're going to eat it, which is natural. Animals eat other animals. I've never understood the fact that PETA is so opposed to that. I think if a person doesn't want to eat animals then that's his or her decision that is not to be pushed onto others. I usually don't like to for various reasons.
Anyway, I'm getting off track but my point is that mosquitoes are harmful (sometimes deadly) to humans and in the case of recreational fishing, the fish are not.
But if we're comparing fish and mammals or mammals versus other animals like mosquitoes and such (or if mosquitoes have absoltutely nothing to do with this and were only used for the purpose of sarcasm), I still have the same question, I suppose. Why are mammals better than those other animals? Because something's more cuddly it's automatically better? Its life is more precious? That doesn't make sense to me.

I lost respect for PETA a long time ago. They've been rendering their own efforts useless for some time with things like their "holocaust on your plate" campaign. The real problem is that they are the most prominent animal rights organization and this type of **** casts a bad light on the movement as a whole.

I totally agree with this statement. I can't speak for other people, but I don't believe that the lives of insects, fish, or other creatures are at all less valuable than those of mammals. That's not to say that I never kill insects. I won't hesitate to kill a mosquito if I find it buzzing around my house, neither will I hesitate to drown out a colony of Argentinian ants if it moves in to either my crab tank or my frog tank (which has happened before), and of course I regularly buy crickets to feed to my frog. I also apply a monthly flea preventative to my cats. For me, its a matter of the fact that mosquitos, ants, and fleas pose a serious risk to the health of my pets, which are far more precious to me than any insect. And of course, the frog has to eat something. I would also not hesitate to kill a tick if i ever saw one on one of my critters.
Other than that, I live and let live. Any other wayward creature - spider, fly, whatever, I capture live and set free outside.

I love most insects (and fear a couple of them) but it's natural that animals eat each other and that some insects (and arachnids at times) have to be killed to keep other animals safe in your home (well, and also you  ). So I'm with ya.

It's very interesting for me to read about these kind of beliefs. I agree that cute animals aren't even less dispoable than non-cute animals. I see the argument for many things, although I do have a harder time understanding why one would hesitate to stomp on an ant or get rid of that nasty spider making a huge web in the corner of your garage, even if it's not harmful and only annoying. Sometimes I think people can take things to an extreme. But to each her own.

I'm sorry, I thought your question was a joke and responded in kind. Though, perhaps, yes, I may not have had the time to respond in an "intelligent" manner. But I definitely think jokes can be an intelligent manner in which to respond. That wasn't the best joke ever, so perhaps that doesn't apply in this case, but I thought it was funny when I did it.
