Luxury store apologizes to Oprah
Hermes' Paris store had rebuffed talk show host
(CNN) -- Luxury store Hermes on Wednesday apologized to Oprah Winfrey for turning her away last week, saying that its Paris store was closed to set up for a public relations event when the talk show host stopped by.
"Hermes regrets not having been able to accommodate Ms. Winfrey and her team and to provide her with the service and care that Hermes strives to provide to each and every one of its customers worldwide," the store said in a statement.
"Hermes apologizes for any offense taken due to such circumstances."
The store said the incident occurred on June 14 around 6:45 p.m., about 15 minutes after the store closed. It said Winfrey and her team arrived at a time when "a private PR event was being set up inside."
Harpo Productions spokeswoman Michelle McIntyre said Winfrey "will discuss her 'crash moment' when her show returns from hiatus in September."
"Crash" is a film dealing with race relations. The phrase "crash moment" refers to situations where a party feels discriminated against on the basis of skin color.
The New York Daily News cited sources close to Winfrey as saying the talk show host was first rebuffed by a clerk and then a store manager. The Daily News reported Winfrey had gone to the store to buy a watch for singer Tina Turner, her dining partner that night.
McIntyre confirmed that account for CNN.
The New York Post, in its Monday Page Six gossip column, reported she was turned away because the store had been "having a problem with North Africans lately."
In comments to CNN, an Hermes spokeswoman categorically denied that allegation.
"There was never any discussion of North Africans," she said. "The story is not true."
The spokeswoman said Winfrey came to the store 15 minutes after closing and a security guard informed her the store was closed and gave her a card, telling her she could come back the next day.
Surveillance videotape of the encounter supports the store's account, according to the spokeswoman.
She said the CEO of Hermes has called Winfrey's people to explain "the situation" and invited her to come back to shop in the store.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. There is no need for the store to apologize. They were closed!!! Just because she is a very famous person does not mean that they need to bend over backwards to suit her needs. If Oprah was upset because a store that was closed would not reopened on her account then I hate her more then usual.

Yup, I agree. those people already worked a full day and wanted to go home to their families. Oprah should have shopped earlier. I can't stand her either. "Gee lets give everyone in the audience a car, that they have to pay taxes on, rather than to a charity where the money could have been really helpful.". Crash Moment - i.e when you know you are wrong and have to bring race into something that had nothing to do with it to try to save face. Sounds more like a COW moment.

Yep, and those people got a $28,400 new car for about $7,000 in taxes (actual amount depends on individual situations but that is a good round figure) - I certainly call that a gift, esp. considering they could easily finance the tax. But, even if they could not afford the $7,000, they could always sell the car, pay the $7,000 or so and then keep their $20,000 or so gift, which I submit is a whole helluva lot more than any charity would ever give them at one time.
Also, did I mention that if they were to get rid of the gift tax which is related to the Death Tax - no taxes would be owed here - so I think the culprit here is the Govt. - not Oprah
In the end, the guests had three choices:
keep the car and pay the tax
sell the car and pay the tax with the profits
or forfeit the car.
I know this is a rant, but it drives me crazy when people act like Oprah did something so horrible here.

I do blame Oprah. Take that $27,000 * 50 audience members (way to low) which makes it $1,350,000. I think that money, if she wanted to be "nice" could have helped many more people if used differently. I highly doubt the audience members that where there, get their food from a foodbank.

She gave away 276 cars, but she did not purchase them. GM gave them to her to give away on her show. So it is not like she was giving her own money Oprah dones millions every year to charity. So, I think her record is spotless on that

Oprah didn't take her money and buy people cars - they were given by the company - it was basically a really big publicity stunt for the cars and probably for Oprah.
Oprah does a lot of good  I think that though it's important to give to charities and such the average Joe who does good things also deserves a treat sometimes.

I just saw on the news that she is now blaming the employees for not letting her in because she is black. Come on, Oprah. You don't see George Lopez complaining about stuff like this because he is of Mexican ancestory. We just make jokes about it instead of getting angry and whining to the news.
Oprah should have went shopping earlier in the day. I don't blame the shop employees at all. She needs to be treated like any other customer who tries to buy something 15 mins after a store has closed it's doors. She was in France. Europeans do things alot differently than we do in the States and Oprah needs to realize her money isn't going to open all the doors that she wants.

To be honest, I think they sucked out her remaining brain cells when they sucked all of that fat out of her flabby ass last year. I'll never forget a few months back when she had a show where a victim of molestation confronted her molester on the show; it was positively revolting. Couple that with her constant "Look at me, I'm Oprah and these are my famous friends" puff jobs and I can't deal with it or her. Don't even get me started on her pseudo-intellectual/show-off "book club" selections like John Steinbeck. She's so unintentionally hilarious that I want to wail like a ninth grade Bay City Rollers groupie and stomp my feet.
I USED to like her when she put on quality shows, though, back when Donahue was still on the air. She used to be pretty darn good.

Exactly. I hate the celebrity ass kissing too. I didn't know she had shrub on her show. She seems to try not to say anything overtly political. She did have a show before the election encouraging everyone to get their butts out and vote. She and her guests stated that it was the most important vote of their lifetimes. Cameran Diaz was on, of course, and she was upset and said something about being very frightened about the way things were going. So without saying it they said to get out and vote to get shrub out.

She has worked her way up from nothing and if she wants to shop in a damn store 15 minutes after they close then I say LET HER! I mean the employees were still there - they probably hadn't even closed out the cash registers yet - honestly - if I put myself in Oprah's place I'd be pissed off too!
By the way - OPRAH ROCKS!!! :p

These stores are always staying open late to accomodate their customers, who spend thousands in there - let's put it this way an ashtray is like $400 - fortunately a friend gave me three different sized green ones with a Scottie on each - needless to say I was FLOORED!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I owned that store I would be livid. "You said what to Oprah? I'm going to dock your pay for the profit I would have made on that watch!" Okay, I wouldn't really say that.

Oprah gives lots of money to charities. She has her Angel Network set up for this. It shocks me that so many of you hate her. How do you hate Oprah? Do you have a heart?
I don't hate her. I just grew tired of the preachiness. And I caught a bit of the rerun of the Cruise show and my yes, she kissed his ass. His answers to her even mildly direct questions were vapid, to say the very least. And she didn't even call him on it.

With his Stepford wife, no less. Condi was on, too, and Powell.
I am sickened beyond belief. I am sure it is all because of that dirtbag

She came from nothing and for that you've got to admire the woman. Was her speech that "Do what you love and you'll get rich like me" thing? And she charges like $200 for it? That's the kind of thing I can't stand.

You know the higher ups have got to be pissed. They have a very select clientele and this is certainly not the kind of press they need.

I don't hate her, I just find her disingenuous about many things and I don't like how she exploits her guests. Explain to me what is classy about having a victim of molestation confront her molester on your show. I liked her years ago when she produced real quality shows about racism, economic oppression, and stuff like that. Stuff that was important, not hour-long shows about her 50th birthday party or an hour dedicated to kissing the asses of Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes and Will Ferrell/Nicole Kidman. She started to believe her own hype and took it too far, imo.

lol no it wasn't like that at all. It was an industry convention - and she received an award - so it was basically a thank you speech - but she gave a really inspiring speech about how getting the award was a "full cirlce" moment in her life...she talked about some of her career milestones when she did news...I was totally inspired after seeing her

If she's taking her cues from Phil these days, I have even less respect for her than I already do.
Didn't Howard Stern do a little digging a few years back and discover that Phil wasn't even a doctor when he was first being billed as one on her show? He loves to rip Phil a new asshole every now and then.

I can't remember exactly what the scuttlebut was. I think it came out at some point that his doctorate was in something other than psych or that he wasn't actually licensed. Or maybe I'm confusing him with John Gray.

She has recently done a show on the working poor. Well, that was probably a while ago, but she does deal with these topics. That molester show topic is horrid, I agree. Her judgement on that was likely clouded by her own issues with having been victimized in that way. It is too bad she did that, I'm sure she thought it would be a healing experience, but eww eww eww.
I don't get to catch her show so I am not hip on many of the topics lately but
I do read her magazine and I find it inspiring and interesting. At least I don't feel fat, ugly, and poor after I read like I do after reading a fashion magazine.
I really really hate how she treats actors like gods too, I am with you on that. They're just actors for eff's sake.

I think that he did get in trouble a couple of times with the licensing folks for psychologists. That is why he decided to become a legal consultant. He's too brash to be an actual psychologist. That's an understatement.
Someone was on AAR talking about the Dr Phil show and this weird release form you have to sign to be in the audience. You have to say you have no mental illness, you can't hold the show accountable for anything, etc. This guy didn't want to sign the form, he actually suffers from depression. When they asked for it he said he couldn't find it and they were really concerned about getting it back from him. But he had it tucked away and, after arguing for a while, he walked out with it unsigned. It was a bizarre form. Like if the show isn't damaging to people then why would they have such a form?
I don't trust Dr. Phil. You can't trust someone who thinks he's always right.
