Stevie Nicks: Says she couldn't feel any luckier right now

GRAND RAPIDS -- Stevie Nicks considers herself one lucky, mystical rocker these days.
She just completed a magical co-headlining tour with the Eagles' Don Henley, she kicks off a solo U.S. outing with rising star Vanessa Carlton in Grand Rapids on Friday, and she'll pursue a movie project later this year based on an acclaimed series of fantasy stories featuring the character Rhiannon from Welsh mythology.
The singer even anticipates reuniting yet again with Fleetwood Mac.
"I'm very excited about my life right now," Nicks, 57, said in an interview last week from a Henley-Nicks tour stop in Atlanta. "I love what I'm doing."
Oddly enough, Nicks wasn't even planning to perform this year. But then she got a call from Henley, her friend and Eagles drummer, suggesting a joint tour. (The pair scored a Top 10 hit in 1981 with "Leather and Lace.")
"I've never done anything like this before and neither has he. In our hearts, we've always had the thought of doing something like this, but never got around to doing it," Nicks said. "It is a lot of fun. I get to sing 'Hotel California' and 'New York Minute.' "
Although Henley's schedule forced him to limit that tour to just 10 dates, ending last Sunday at the Chicago-area Tweeter Center, Nicks decided to continue on her own, enlisting pianist-singer Carlton to open shows and join her on stage for some tunes.
"I know her pretty well, and I just think she's a special one and I'm glad to be able to put her in front of a lot of people," Nicks said of Carlton, best known for her songs "A Thousand Miles" and "Ordinary Day." She noted Fleetwood Mac was in the same studio as Carlton when she recorded her latest album, "Harmonium."
"My audiences are so excellent and so caring and loving, and I want her (Carlton) to feel that," Nicks added. "I believe these artists have to get out in front of the people. The music business is in such bad shape. Those artists don't get nurtured. It's frightening."
Nicks' reputation as an independent, successful rock artist -- a starring role in Fleetwood Mac, plus a solo career that's spawned singles such as "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stand Back" -- has made her a mentor for younger female musicians, a role she relishes.
"We had people to nurture us," she said of the early part of her career when she teamed up with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. "We had a producer who let us live in his house. We had people around us who would say, 'Don't get upset' and 'We'll keep you afloat.' In this day and age, it's 'Get out.'
"I really respect her (Carlton). I'll be damned if I'll let her go by the wayside. She is one of the great ones. She won't quit."
Nicks won't quit either, juggling solo and full-band projects with her dream of turning author Evangeline Walton's fantasy tetralogy into a movie, with new music that might involve her musician pals.
The twirling, gypsy-like mystic with a penchant for wearing flowing dresses on stage said she feels a spiritual connection to the "amazing stories" of the mythical gods and goddesses.
"There's a very practical side of me, but there is definitely my 'Rhiannon' side, my performing/writing side, that spiritual path that I think I'm on right now," she said of the movie project.
But, she insisted, "there's always a future for Fleetwood Mac," which reunited in 2003 and promptly went out and played 135 shows across the globe. She's confident they'll join forces again within the next two years.
"People always say we'll break up. But we don't break up, we'll never break up," she said. "I think the great thing for a great, elite band like Fleetwood Mac is to get out of the spotlight for a while. It's much more energizing when you have a break. It's like a marriage: You need your own spot in the house and get away from each other once in a while."

This is great news, especially about the movie project! I hope it actually happens. Also great news on the FM front. I knew they were not breaking up. The only part I am not happy about is Vanessa Carlton. I wish she were not touring with my Stevie. But then again in my mind no one is good enough for my girl!

Does this mean that maybe Stevie will try something new since she will be doing a couple of songs with Vanessa Carlton?

Ah. Good point. Maybe "joining her onstage" means Vanessa will play piano.

It would be all right if she'd just open for her and thats it. Don dueting with her makes sense. Hes another rock legend. But Venessa Carlton. Sure Stevie likes her, but she also likes freaking Maroon 5 and those Soap Operas, her tastes arent always her fans

I think there may be an audience for the Rhiannon stories if they're done well, considering the success of the "Rings" trilogy and all the Harry Potter movies & books.
I'd rather have some new music tho. :sorry:
And good to hear about Vanessa sharing the stage with Stevie - that should be very cool to see. However, since the news of her opening the shows broke, I got V confused with that *other* young-20s rocker grrl who was in that photo shoot on the beach with Stevie a few years ago. Well, I think she is implying that VC is not as popular as she once was and/or there is some label trouble there. So, La Nicks is introducing VC to la Nicks' fans in an effort to let VC get more exposure.

Yeah, I could not care less about the movie - I just want the soundtrack for the movie. Although I'm happy to see Stevie at Red Rocks this year, I'd rather she got her ass in the sudio and recorded a new LP, AND finished her album remasters (she said we'd have them this year).

I can't believe that! I never really knew that, I always guessed it.
Well if you think about it, it's a good and bad choice if you think about it.
I still Would have let her have a song or two. And call her a special guest. Maybe a duet or something. She IS Fleetwood Mac. She shouldnt be forced to tour, and at the same time she shouldnt be forced to not be on an album.

What studio is going to pony up the cash for a movie based on an obscure, mythical creature that only Stevie Nicks has been singing about for thirty years? That's the question. From what I gather in that article, she says it's a dream of hers, not something that is going to happen.

Who knows? Have you seen any of the schlock that SciFi Channel has produced in the last few years? *cough*EarthSea*cough* Just because she said "movie" doesn't mean a studio/theater release. Hell, it could wind up on Lifetime.

For some reason, I don't think Stevie will go for any of that. I expect the reaction to one of those prospects to be along the lines of her reaction to being asked to record Don't Come Around Here No More.

I don't know what to think about this movie talk. When there's a producer or studio attached to it - I'll start counting chickens but for now, yeah it's probably just another pipe dream.
And I don't know a thing about Vanessa Carlton or what she sings like but I'm happy Stevie wants to share the stage with her. And I love the way Stevie is so concerned for these artists that get dumped by their labels if everything they do isn't gold. She's really becoming the fairy godmother to these discarded stars. Plus I'm SO DAMN TIRED of the same presentation of the same damn songs on every tour that to hear her sing with somebody different sounds like it'll be a better show. At least I hope it'll be better.
Yeah I also think she should open every show with Wild Heart.

amen. I'm not a huge V fan, but I enjoy her and appreciate her writing some of her own stuff and being able to rip up the piano on top of being an accomplished dancer. So she's not everyone's taste? Can't please everyone and I'm sure it's a thrill for V to do this with one of her idols.

Great article.
I think the first time Stevie mentioned to the press that she'd like to do a film based on the "Rhiannon" stories, was back during the 'Tusk' press junket.
Would be cool if she finally has the opportunity to make that dream of hers a reality.
At the very least, we might get a "Rhiannon" concept album out of it!
I'm happy to hear that Stevie hasn't closed the book on her Fleetwood Mac involvement... though, given their history, thinking they'll work together again within the next two years might be a bit optimistic!
Might take that long for Lindsey's end-of-the-year 2004/early-spring 2005 album to be released!
As for Vanessa Carlton touring with her... I think that could be a really cool thing. Of course, I'm not one of the fans whose claws come out anytime Stevie's sharing the stage (Don and Sheryl-hate, anyone? ).
All in all, she sounds like she's in great spirits, and seems to be completely past whatever it was that was dragging her down over the last few years.

What'd she say about the book, Diss?
After all these years she's still talking about these Rhiannon movies. She really seems to want to do this. It sounds important to her so I hope she gets to, I just can't imagine the final product or what her involvement would be, exactly. I'd rather see the autobiography (and a new album) first.
Sounds like Vanessa may be doing more than just opening for her. I can take her or leave her, but the prospect of Stevie singing on some different stuff is exciting. Can't wait to hear how the first solo show goes!

When she was here in MA for the TISL tour, she gave an interview to a Worchester radio station where she said that her and her unnamed friend were in the final stages of putting together a big book of her artwork and that they wanted to release it in the next six months or so.

I agree. Save the movie project for when you can't/won't tour anymore, Stevie. I'm having a hard time picturing a Rhiannon movie with a soundtrack consisting of Stevie and her friends (i.e. Sheryl, Don, Tom, Lindsey, Maines, Carlton, Isaak, etc.), but that's just moi.

Well, I don't know the specifics about Vanessa Carlton or anything surrounding her career, but if she did get dropped from her label it wouldn't surprise me. I don't think she's particularly talented. Her voice is thin and whiny and her songs are really boring and uninteresting. There was a Time Warner Cable commercial here in Austin that featured Vanessa BUTCHERING the Stones' tune "Time is On My Side" Every time it came on it was like nails on a chalkboard. Her CLUNK-CLUNK-KERPLUNK plodding piano (sounded like a 5 year old just learning how to play) accompanied by that horrendous voice of hers made me wanna pop open a fresh vein in a warm bathtub.

Her CLUNK-CLUNK-KERPLUNK plodding piano (sounded like a 5 year old just learning how to play) accompanied by that horrendous voice of hers made me wanna pop open a fresh vein in a warm bathtub.
 Boy, I love ya.
Vanessa Carlton is under the impression that if she plays piano and adds strings to EVERY ****ING SONG, then she's a mature and classy artiste. Bitch plz. She sounds just like Stevie when she plays the piano: a little kid that was given too much sugar and was then let loose in the front parlor where the piano sits.

She'd mentioned it as early as 1977...I recall reading stuff about a "Rhiannon" movie STARRING Stevie Nicks as early as that.
What about his early 1995/late 1996 solo album?

   I think Vanessa sucks too. I do, however, think it's sweet how Stevie gets all protective over these young singers. But I wish she'd get clucky over someone good for once instead of Michelle Branch and the Dixie Chicks...

Thanks a lot Tiff, it's always great to read such a positive article. About Vanessa Carlton, I haven't listened to her new album (except White Houses :D ), but on the first one there were a couple of very nice songs. This tour with Stevie intrigues me, and she's doing a great thing for her.
What studio is going to pony up the cash for a movie based on an obscure, mythical creature that only Stevie Nicks has been singing about for thirty years? That's the question. From what I gather in that article, she says it's a dream of hers, not something that is going to happen.
I think it's very possible. It all depends by the point of view in the script. Not because comes from a Stevie song but because the story could be intriguing. Especially if done low budget with a brilliant young director, young actors, shot in Wales or Ireland... it could work. :)

Do you guys think Christine will EVER be convinced to return, even if its for one performance or just songs on an album? :distress:
No, I think she's done with Fleetwood Mac, at least as a full member of the group. I wouldn't rule out her making a cameo on the next Fleetwood Mac album, nor would I rule out her playing a Fleetwood Mac 40th Anniversary concert with many current and ex-members of Fleetwood Mac that Mick is trying to put together. But her days as a full-time member have been over since 1991, with "The Dance" being the exception. I think she wanted to retire from Fleetwood Mac on a high note.
Well, she offered to record Say You Will with FM, but dumb ass Mick said NO. If you're not touring, then you can't be on the album.
That's a bit of an over simplification, to say the least. She only offered as a sense of duty to the band. She was in that band for nearly thirty years, and considers them to be part of her family. As for what Mick said, that was how Lindsey, Stevie, and John all felt, too. So, I wouldn't give him all the blame. And, if you watch "Destiny Rules," John says that Christine would have been miserable being in that situation. Christine doesn't want the pressure of Fleetwood Mac anymore. I'm absolutely sure that it came as a relief to Christine that the band chose to go on without her. Mick was only doing what was in her best interest as well as the band's. For the record, the band even begged her to just sing on "Don't Stop" when she saw them. She said "no." Folks, she doesn't want to be a part of that anymore. She still loves them, and they her, but she NEEDS to move on with her life.
Sometimes, Mick has made the worst decisions for the band. IMO.
Yeah, but he's also made the best decisions for the band, too. Like getting two kids from California to join the band.
Yet he had no problem using her for Time.
Apples and oranges. When the band started work on "Time," the only people in the band were Mick, John, and Christine. She had every intention to still record with the band, even if she wasn't going to tour. So Mick got Bekka, and then Dave. Billy heard about Bekka and asked if he could come back to the band, as he goes back a long way with the Bramletts. Still, Christine was involved with the band from the very beginning, and her songs made it clear that this was to be her swansong from Fleetwood Mac.
Again, I think everybody needs to look at all the facts and get off Mick's back already. Yeah, he's done some stupid things (fan clubs), but overall, he's managed to keep Fleetwood Mac going since Peter Green quit in 1970. If you consider all the stupid **** he's had to deal with in that time, and of all the personalities that have graced that band, that's a task for which he should be commended. Furthermore, the band was at its creative and commercial peak when he was in the driver's seat. Critique him when he deserves it, but leave him alone when he makes a decision that is right for the band, even if it's a decision that's unpopular with the fans.

Which Houston concert? Toyota Center or Cynthia Woods? I was at Cynthia Woods.
The Toyota Center show. It was actually a little sad - grand opening night for the venue, and the place was just under 3/4 full total. The lower mezzanine was just over half full - huge areas of empty seats that were perfectly visible due to the strange way the stairwells are lit from above. Not to mention highlighting people leaving the arena during the new songs (especially "Come"), as I was in the back of the lower section.
The Mac got a front page Houston Chronicle pic out of the deal, but the review wasn't very kind, and seemed to imply they had jinxed the arena by not selling it out on its first concert.

How's the full moon in Sagittarius working with ya today, Miz Cancer???
It would be great, cause I have moon in Sag, however, the moon is actually in Capricorn today. :wavey: A good tip to remember is that the full moon is always in the sign opposite the sign the sun is in. :)
"Thursday, June 23
The Moon is in business-like Capricorn today, asking us to conduct our lives in a sensible and structured manner. We withhold emotional expression for the sake of no-nonsense expediency, unless our integrity is at stake -- and it might very well be. Rational Mercury is forming an irritating quincunx aspect with powerful Pluto. We may need to take an intellectual position with which we don't agree. Additionally, the Sun is at odds with imaginative Neptune, making it difficult to align our ideals with the situation at hand."
Johnny Stew - Thanks, although I don't like muppets. Those two guys were the best, though. Moods and thoughts breed like moods and thoughts, and sometimes the onslought just gets to me, and turns my mood. :)

She noted Fleetwood Mac was in the same studio as Carlton when she recorded her latest album, "Harmonium."
I didn't realize Say You Will was recorded anywhere but the Bellagio house.
Nicks won't quit either, juggling solo and full-band projects with her dream of turning author Evangeline Walton's fantasy tetralogy into a movie, with new music that might involve her musician pals.
I'm begining to think this might actually happen.

I tried to read that series by Evangeline Walton, and I couldn't get through it. It started out good but it became increasingly unbearable until I simply could not finish the third book. If Stevie does a Rhiannon movie, let's hope she takes out the "throw the baby in the barbecue" portion or the corpses who come back to life and chew people up.
I AM COMPLETELY SERIOUS.

What did you find distasteful about the books? I've only read snippets of the author's poetry, they were very Stevie. oh, so, it's the zombie corpses and baby in barbecue? Is the whole series that bad, or is there good parts? Is it supposed to be like that, ie, it's fantasy? :wavey:

seriously, Mick gets the worst wrap of any Mac member. I for one have nothing bad to say about him, and even LOVE his World Turning drum solo.
Then you must not have gotten spit on. :p

The first book was romantic. Its flowery language suited it. But when Walton tried to go into the grotesque, her prose style seemed ridiculous. Also, I'm one of those people who hates reading about excessive violence, much less seeing it. I found it discordant on a literary level and disturbing on an emotional level. Therefore, if she does it, I hope it's just the first book - the only book with a happy ending.

Ah! that totally makes sense. I would probably feel the same. I wonder why she strayed into schlock?
Maybe Stevie only read the first one?
Thanks!

The origial myths she was writing about were very violent, and she was trying to stay true to them. Stevie must have read the baby barbecue one, because she quotes it in "Sara" (I try not to think about the tragic and violent reference where 'when you build your house, call me home' comes from because it ruins the song for me). And like I said, her prose just wasn't working in it. :(

Ah. From what little I've read of her, and what you say, it seems she might not be as skilled at the violent parts? How's the plot, though? I mean, are the violent ones compelling in any way? Are there great stories of violent gods and their Nasty Adventures? Although, if it's badly written, as you say, that may not save it...
anyways...hehehe...thanks for the info. maybe I should just read them.

And if that happens, I expect up to the minute play by play including Mr. Buckingham's wardrobe choice, guitar, whether or not he was carrying that damn wallet in his back pocket, hair length, etc. Oh, and a phone call from Tiffany
Me too! One of my favorties
I'm so glad to hear that Stevie is so happy and excited about her life right now. There's so much for her "fans" to be excited about too. She's sounding great on this tour, plans on doing the "Rhiannon Project" , hasn't shut the door on Fleetwood Mac, and seems like she feels she is "channelling the muses" as far as her writing goes. How can anyone complain? To think that life begins at 57! :woohoo:

Michelle Branch. She would have been a better selection.
I have to disagree with you - I think Michelle Branch is horrid.
I'm not a huge Vanessa fan either, but I like her better than Branch.

I don't like Vanessa Carlton, but it really is nice of Stevie to help her out. I just looked up her stats on Billboard, and her second album was pretty much a bomb, peaking at #33 and spending just 7 weeks in the Top 200. The single, "White Houses," peaked at #86 on the Hot 100.
She's a fantastic example of an artist being used and discarded by the music industry. Even though she had a blockbuster first single, when her new stuff didn't catch fire right away the label jumped ship. I'm sure this opening slot was organized by Stevie, not by Carlton's label. :distress:

Vanessa isn't the top priority at her label, unfortunately. They really screwed her over. Vanessa and her boyfriend Stephen Jenkins (of 3rd Eye Blind) took sort of a whole Tusk Approach to the album in terms of creativity. The label seemed to be pretty gung ho about it; so much so that they hired her an orchaestra to play on several tracks of Harmonium. However, they have since told her that they will not be releasing a second single from that album--it's White Houses and that's it. If you're not getting air time and people don't know what your album sounds like, how do you expect them to buy it? Therefore, Vanessa has been whoring herself out in sold out clubs and opening for other artists. I give her a lot of credit. Vocally, she's not my favorite artist but I think her composition and playing is outstanding. I can't wait to see how this goes

This Just in, Jimmy Iovine has signed on to produce Stevie's movie. His first act was laying down the law. Hes told Stevie that this is Not Big Rock n Roll movie making. This is something you have never done before. You are not a proven film maker in any shape way or form, You've been protected by the music industry like the little baby egg for 30 years. This is something you have to do alone Stevie and if you want to do this I have to know that you'll be very strong and very disciplined.

That's the straight transcript, basically, from Stevie Nicks - Behind the Music. It shows a clip of her being interviewed (about Bella Donna) and that's what she says. :D
It's okay. I don't know millions of things, It just so happened that BTM was the only Stevie thing I had to watch for years, and I watched it ovah and ovah. :wavey:
