Mass. Gov. Considering Presidential Bid
By THEO EMERY, Associated Press Writer

BOSTON - Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has spent the last several months addressing Republican loyalists around the country, acknowledged on Tuesday that he's considering a presidential bid in 2008.

"If someone said, well, you know, the governor's testing the national waters, that's a fair characterization," Romney said. "But I'm planning on running for governor. Time will tell, I'll make a final decision and an announcement in the fall, and we'll go from there."

Romney, a former venture capitalist who headed the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, won that year's race for governor in Massachusetts.

He has recently spent time in South Carolina, Michigan and California to talk to Republicans. In those speeches, he has cast himself as a social conservative on issues such as same-sex marriage and embryonic stem-cell research.

A political action committee established by friends and supporters of Romney has distributed more than $250,000 to Republican candidates and county GOP organizations across the nation, a strategy often used by candidates considering a run for president.

In December, Romney pledged to run for re-election — his first term for governor ends in 2006 — but he's gradually backed away from that commitment.

On Tuesday, Romney reiterated that he would wait until the fall to make a final decision.

"I'm out speaking across the country. ... I'm seeing what it's like in the rest of the nation, but nothing's changed," he said. "My job keeps me here."

So sad that he's the governor of MA and can't tolerate the gay marriages there.

Go to Quebec. They speak French, allow gay marriage, and will probably be an independent nation in a few years...

He won't win the presidency and he won't win the race for governor. Not to worry.

I WON'T be voting for a Republican or a Democrat candidate in 2008, You can take that to the bank...I have grown ab-so-lutely sick of two-party politics in the US as of late.

Actually, he might win the Governor's race. He got in as a fiscal conservative, since it didn't work out too badly with the last one (William Weld), and that's how he continues to campaign, despite being a right-wing religious nut-job (of the Mormon variety).

I won't shop at Staples because of him. The ones near my house actually sell his biography at the checkout counter.

They've been saying that since 1850. Smart money is on Alberta & BC breaking ranks first.

He'll never win, imo. His stance on welfare alone will cost him and there's such an extreme effort on the part of the Pioneer Valley to oust him that he'll never survive. His veto of that stem cell bill is going over like a lead balloon, too.

I've seen his **** book in Stop and Shop, too.
