View Full Version : Is Stevie a Nocturnal?

From everything I have read, it seems like Stevie is nocturnal. She has said things like, she will stay up and write lyrics until 10:00 AM in the morning... she said that she records music at night, from 5-9... is she a nocturnal human being?

The reason I ask is because I have nocturnal tendencies. I usually wake up at four in the afternoon and go to bed at eight in the morning. Everyone thinks I am crazy, but then I did some research and there are actually a small minority of people who just naturally adjust to night time hours and it is beyond their control. So, I was thinking maybe Stevie is also one of these people?

Stevie told Jay Leno in 1994, that she goes to bed (even when not on tour) around 5am and wakes up around 1pm.

That's actually pretty close to my own sleeping habits. I'm definitely a nightowl (or nightbird, if you will)!

Would you like a subscription to my new magazine? It's called Der Stevie. :)

Just kidding. to answer, yes, she's said several different times in several ways (including her song lyrics) that she is nocturnal. :) :xoxo: Also I've read a lot of stuff that says your rhythmic clock is kind of set before birth, and some people are just nocturnal, and some otherwise.

Even my grandmother (before she passed away) used to stay up until 1am.

My father's side... they're all crack-of-dawn, "come on, the rooster's crowing -- up and at 'em," kinda people.

I'm definitely a night person. I actually feel nervous and weird if I have to be up at 6am or 7am. It just feels wrong. I'm lucky - my work day starts at noon, but it's a struggle for me to get up at 9:45am to do what I have to do before I leave. On my days off, I sleep til noon. I'm always up til at least 2 or 3am - and I've always been like this. I recently said to my mum, I bet you didn't know, but when I was a kid, I used to stay awake til waaaaaay after everyone else went to bed - like 2am or 3am when I was about 11 or 12. She was like, no, I knew. You were always like that.

I am sooooo nocturnal! I can stay up early with no problems and get up in the afternoon. Everything is better at night. My parents arn't like this, they go to bed at like 9!! It's actually 12:20 by me now and I'm just getting my second wind. I want to go run around the house! Getting up for school is a killer. I sleep until 6:05 when I have to leave by 6:30. I actually have to get up at 6 every Tuesday and Thursday for practice and I still stay up late. I'm one of those people that can also live on no sleep!

It really is documented that being nocturnal is influenced by your "activity cycle" while being in the womb. It sounds kinda silly, but I've been a labor and delivery nurse for 17 years and most patients that tell me the baby moves more at night will come back to the unit after delivery and say that they've continued the same sleeping habits after going home. It probably doesn't help that the nursery usually keeps the lights on 24/7.

What musician isn't nocturnal? It's kinda hard to come off of a two hour concert and wind down sometime before 1:30 or 2. I guess you could get used to it... I don't think I ever could unless I was nearly exhausted when I went on. Even when I'm just at a concert, I'm hyped up until at least 3.

I'm definitely a nocturnal person. I don't fully wake up until about 2:30 in the afternoon, so anytime before then I'm pretty much useless mentally and physically. Years ago when I started singing for baseball games I had a babysitting job during the day but the kids didn't wake up until noon, so I could crash on the couch and wait for them to wake up. As long as I was moving by noon, my voice was warmed up perfectly for 7:30 -- it didn't matter how many warmups I did, if I woke up earlier or later than noon I wasn't going to hit those high notes! So I stayed up until 3 or 4 in the morning playing piano, went to the kids' house at 7, slept until noon... it was great. Ever since then, when I'm not in school I start keeping odd hours and I'll stay up reading or writing or playing until at least 2, get some sleep, and be up by 10 so I can leave for work at 12. (Just don't ask me what I'm going to do next semester when I have 8 AM classes all week long. )

I don't know what it is about the night, but the world slows down, you don't feel pressured for time, and it's like it could go on forever... it's not like the daytime when you can see what time it is based on the light (the sunlight looks different in the morning than it does at noon and in the afternoon)... there's not that subconscious "I'm running out of time, I need to get something done" thing. When you're writing, that endlessness gets really comfortable and you loosen up. If anything, I find it hard to practice during the day because I'd much rather practice at night when I don't feel like I have any time constraints and it's okay to lose track of time.

I am sure there are many people just like us, but solely based on how you worded this post, I wonder...seperated at birth? LOL. Same w/ my family. All my mom's side, stays up WAY late, and doesn't want to be bothered before noon. All my dad's side, in bed like at 8p.m MAX, and up at some unforsaken hour...usually about the time the women go to bed. lol

This is so weird that a lot of you are saying that you are somewhat nocturnal. I thought I was the only one! The one thing that sucks about having such a different timeclock as everyone else is that no one respects my schedule! People will call me at nine in the morning (knowing full well that I just went to sleep a few hours earlier) and expect me to conform to their way of life. My sister called me and needed me to drop something off at her house at 8:30 in the morning. I was in a dead sleep and almost got into a car accident!

I love the night though. I hate the daylight. During the night no one bothers me! It is so different then the daytime. So somber and quiet. Almost spooky. I really don't like the sun either. I don't understand people that go to bed at 9pm and get up at 4am.

I think its the only way I can get any peace and quite and I'm sure Stevie feels the same way.

That makes total sense now. I can blame it on my mom. I always love when I can do that. My mom has always been totally nocturnal and stays up until about 4 or 5 am and wakes up around 1 or 2 pm.

When I was little she would make me stay up late with her and watch MTV.

It's all her fault.

My dad on the other hand goes to bed at 10 and wakes up around 5:30 am. I don't know how they ever even found time to conceive me. Ewww! That was a nasty mental image.

Gawd, I love you people! I don't feel like such a freak now. I also thought I was the only one. I rarely sleep but if I try to go to bed at a *normal* hour (meaning 10, 11, 12), forget it. Early mornings are hard for me. My ideal is to go to sleep at 3 or even 4 and get up around 11 or 12. Unfortunately, my work schedule doesn't always coincide with those hours. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who just can't seem to get on the same internal clock that the rest of the world is on.

Now, one question. What if you live with a morning person who just doesn't get why you keep such *strange* hours? How do you handle the difference in schedules?

Well, I won't bore you with the intimate details of my life but up until a month ago, I lived with my bf and luckily we both had the same strange nocturnal habits. Now, I live with my aunt again who is up at 6 or 7 every morning and keeps trying to get my times adjusted to hers. I can't break up with my aunt. But, at least I don't feel like I'm the only person that just can't do the up-at-the-crack-of-dawn thing, thanks to you guys! :D

And why is it that every little thing I learn about Stevie makes me love her more? If only I weren't a straight female and she wasn't a huge, mega rockstar, we'd be so perfect for each other. :xoxo:

That sounds like my Mom! My mother comes into my room in the mornings on the weekends and informs me "It's Ten o' clock" at the top of her lungs! Can you believe her nerve? Every fifteen minutes she barges in telling me what time it is in a perky tone of voice and I just want to murder her!

Anyways, it is 5:45 AM here and the sun is starting to rise. Time for me to go to bed!

No, that's exactly what I've read about. It gets more involved, with the Mother's sleep cycle playing a part, but, yeah.

I'm totallt nocturnal, altho still upside down from yall on this side of the world. Last night I went to bed at 4.30am with the birds singing and dawn breaking and got up at 1.30pm. I hate mornings, I hate getting up early. I do not function well before 2pm anyways. I'm so glad I'm not alone in being out of sync with most of the world!!

Anyone asks, I'm just like Stevie Nicks, so there!!

I was nocturnal in my younger days. :p

Worked 3p-11p for years, woke up around 11am, went to bed around 2 or 3am. Loved it. Then I got a job M-F day shift. At first it was soooo hard to make the switch, but now I don't think I could change back. Now on weekends if I'm up until 1am & can sleep in until 9am, that's late for me.

Exactly - I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one. Actually, I've tried to explain this to people - the whole "feeling weird" thing about those early hours. I guess people who are early birds, who love to see the sun come up, and see the world wake up, can't relate. Me? I love the peace of 2am... I'd rather take my dog out for a walk at 2am than at 6am. But what is odd is that I'm a total sun freak - I loooove the sun, so it's not that I shun the day. I just consider that the day starts at noon. But I come from a family of total "early-to-bed-early-to-risers." Freaks me RIGHT out. Thankfully, as I've said, I'm extremely lucky that my work schedule now fits my natural bodyclock, and my wonderful friends and family totally accept and respect it. No one ever calls my house til after noon! And I've never had a problem dating non-night people like me. I just stay up when they go to sleep... and then they get up early, and I go back to sleep for a few hours. Total harmony. :xoxo:

that Stevie is nocturnal...I know fer sure I am, I can easily stay awake all night and sometimes all day too

Hell, If I were to get more than 8 hours sleep ever it would only be after I passed on from this life, Cause I typically sleep only 6 hours maximum....I even stayed awake for almost 48 hours back in March after my Mom passed away from this existence.

Cant wait, Wont be able to sleep tonite at all since the Full moon will appear the largest on the East horizon for the first time in 18 years

What musician isn't nocturnal?

Exactly. After PLAYING a gig (for us WORKING musicians who play 4-6 sets a night) til 1:30am...tearing down our own equip; loading it into the car, driving home (anywhere from 5-50 miles depending on venue)...getting home between 2:45-4am...then trying to let the adrenaline of the gig & drive home to pass (and Lord knows any caffeine consumption in the meantime)...bedtime could be anywhere from 4-7am or later...then there are those of us who have REAL jobs as well...sometimes sleep isn't an option at all...straight from the gig to the day job. Those days are hell.

I was totally awake at 3am the other morning...awakened by a very loud bird at my window, singing at the top of her lungs. The first thought that went through my mind was "OMG...I'm hearing the call of a nightbird!" Stayed freaked out for two days waiting for my moment of doom.

I love the night. If I had my way, I would never sleep. Because morning are great too. If I am on hiatus and feeling like I don't have a million things to do, I will stay up till almost dawn and sleep till 2.

Alas, have these pesky mortgages and a job that requires my presence. I try to keep a balance and get some night enjoyment in when I can.

Same here! My aunt is very cool about most things, but she just doesn't get my *vampire/Dracula* hours. She's up and cheery by 7 and I've just crashed two hours before. I've tried getting up early (early meaning 9  ) and even if I've gotten the same amount of sleep I always get, I'm still tired all day and feel like I need a nap. I really wish I could be *normal*.

I'll sleep when I'm dead...been sayin this since I hear Bon Jovi say it....forgive me, I'm young, I only heard it then! But its true. I will stay up most of the night, crash when I'm exhausted but I can get up at 7am for work if I have too. But if I had my way.....sleep at 4am, get up at 1pm!!!
