Here is a little story from last night in London for all those Ledgies that are rather tired of the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes media coverage..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4107922.stm

Four members of a freelance camera crew were arrested at the War of the Worlds premiere in London after its star Tom Cruise was squirted with water. The 42-year-old actor's face and jacket were drenched with water squirted from what appeared to be a microphone.

The crew was working for Channel 4, which said it hoped Cruise would see the funny side of the stunt which was for a new comedy show. The four men were arrested on suspicion of assault and later released on bail.

Cruise - who attended the premiere with his new fiancee Katie Holmes - was talking to journalists in Leicester Square when he was squirted with water. The star struggled to keep his composure as he repeatedly called one of the journalists a "jerk". He said: "That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that, it's incredibly rude." The actor held the interviewer until security guards arrived and then towelled himself down before signing more autographs.

You can link to a video of the incident on the webpage above.

Nothing makes me more irate than those jerky TV shows where grown men do their best to act with less maturity than a playgroup of toddlers. There was a similar one in Britain not too long ago - some guy going around and harassing celebrities like Cruise with dumb-ass questions. Shame on the TV channels for hiring these dweebs.

Dennis Pennis...

He was an ass to most celebs although I do remember a couple of funny moments.. He asked a well known politician a question and instead of putting the microphone to his mouth he put it to his ass when he spoke.. The other one I remember was him running behind Barry Manilow in Hyde Park carrying a white sheet chanting "Barry, you dropped your handkerchief!"

As for the Cruise thing, it was totally immature and goes to show how easy it is to attack a celebrity. Cruise is known for taking literally hours to talk to fans in Leicester Square and it would be unfortunate if he stopped doing it now, although I don't think this show of "Jackass" culture will stop him in the future.. He does give up a lot of time for the UK fans.

If some stranger had squirted water at me I probably wouldn't have been as restrained as Cruise. I must admit he handled it very well considering quite a few celebrities might have gone straight for the nearest security meathead for protection. I think the fact the attacker really couldn't answer back when Cruise challenged him shows it was the act of a childish person.

The only odd thing to me was Cruise's immediate reaction, he laughed and then he got serious right after which was a bit odd..

As much as the whole Tom and Katie thing turns my stomach, I think the stunt was rude and the guy deserved to be arrested.

There's a little group of a$$holes in this country who go around throwing pies in the faces of unsuspecting politicians. The first few leaders who got hit - and it is always a surprise - were very good sports about it, and laughed it off. But then one of them pressed assault charges, as did the next. And eventually, the idiots were convicted. It may sound like a harmless prank, but the reality is, who knows what someone might be hiding something in the tin plate full of cream? One minute you're shaking a hand, the next you are blind-sided and hit in the face? I think it's ludicrous.

It was harmless in a way. BUT Cruise didn't have to talk to those guys. He was doing them a favour by answering their questions.
I don't like Cruise at all, but I still think it was out of order.
Plus, I hate that kind of humour that attempts to get laughs by embarrassing or humiliating people. I think it's kind of pathetic. At least with Jackass, they're taking the piss out of themselves.

Yes, credit where it's due. Cruise is one of the politest major actors when it comes to interviews and fans. I can't remember which film it was, I think Minority Report, he spent two and a half hours outside the Odeon in Leicester Square talking to fans, signing things and chatting on cell phones. The only other major star that is as polite is Tom Hanks, another gent.

BTW,

That's rather revolting. Regardless if Cruise and Holmes are the most obnoxious people on the face of the Earth right now, it still doesn't excuse that kind of thing.

No I don't stock it. It's a reasonable size but not huge or anything.. I had about 7 or 8 large Comets and Shubumkins but the randy buggers bred last year and I've got about 30-35 fish in there now.. They are getting frisky again right now... Here's a picture attached from 5 minutes ago....

Yeah, I was kinda kidding around even though I do think he's one wacky m.f.. What I REALLY think is that he just had a to take a few minutes to process the situation like anyone would.

It's the whole scenario that makes this particular incident funny not the fact that T.C. got sprayed with water. Actually, that on its own is not even really funny, it's really more the fact that this was a lame joke concocted by some jackass who thought that it would be the height of hilarity to spray Tom Cruise with a microphone that spews water , THEN said jackass gets arrested for it. I'm sorry, but that is a total hoot in my book. Tom is really only incidental here.

And the mental image I conjured when I first read the story was pretty funny. So sue me, I contend that it was a harmless reflex !

The net protects the fish from, funnily enough, the neighbours cats!
But it also stops any local herons from getting their dinner from my pond.. Plus it also stops the fish from dying if they jump out of the pond when they get frisky.

So here's what I'm hearing about that relationship.

A source VERY close to the deal is saying there's a contract.

It's worth $5 million.

It's for five years.

There will be no sex.

I don't deny all that, even though I love Tom. Really, I just feel sad for him, because I think he's a pretty good person (scientology notwithstanding, though I think he likes it because he wants to help himself be a better person), and I feel bad for him that someone seemingly pretty decent has to hide his sexuality because of society's negative imposition. :( I feel like some of his strange and negative actions are almost solely because of this stricture. *hoping I didn't make up the word stricture* Anyway, I can see how some don't like him and that's he's not the best actor ever, but still I hold my point. :)

It's all a matter of whether he puts more stock in his career or being true to himself in regards to his sexuality. Any man who would pay a woman and contract a woman for beard services is deeply insecure and it is actually sad. I feel bad for him. I also feel bad for him because he doesn't seem to know what kind of damage his current behavior is causing because of the simple fact tha the didn't act like such a tard when he was with the lovely Kidman. It's jarring to people.

And I just read that Batman only made $46 million. I bet TomKat had something to do with such poor returns, which sucks and it doesn't bode well for War of the Worlds...

I somewhat agree, but I also think throughout his life it would have been an incredible challenge for him to be true to himself and still had the career he has had. I tend to agree about the beard service, but, with the choices he's made, I would think it would be nearly impossible not to do the same, sadly. At this point he's just been a great planner.
I am sad, too, that he is acting kind of like a tard right now. I'm also very suprised. I guess, and I'm sad again for the fact that you can only keep that kind of thing under wraps for so long. I truly hope that soon, because of the different climate, he will feel he can be more honest with the world. I hope he's smart enough to avoid a giant stupid scandal in favor of revealing the truth. But, I kind of doubt it. Just thinking about the nature of the career he has built has me shuddering, so I'm sure he's shaking in his boots.
But, if he did have the courage, I think - it would be a huge boon to....I dunno. This might sound dumb, but I think he's kind of the Rock Hudson of now. Like, people who don't know would never be able to imagine him in certain ways. You know, all his roles are so...Manly/Sporty. But, if they could, wouldn't that be wonderful?
To conclude, I think he is somewhat insecure, but mainly because, in a way, he has had to be. Also I think he is basically pretty decent.

Forgive my ignorance, but why DO so many peoples claim TC is gay? Is there proof or something? Is this just a guess, or a hunch?

I am not a fan of his, but I just never understood how all these accusation got started in the first place. He does not seem gay at all to me. He does not seem the least bit effeminate to me either, does he to you? (I know that that is not a prerequisite)

Have I missed something? Has he been linked to male lovers? Are people just assuming? What is the basis of these claims that he is gay?

Why would Nichole play along with this, what would be in it for her? She is gorgeous and could probably get any man she wanted, why would she want to be in that situation?

Thanks for any insight you can share with me on this one. This has always baffled me. There has to be more to the story that I am not aware of.

I know, she'd just have to ring me up and I'd crawl on my hands and knees right over to her.

In any event, rumours of Cruise being gay have been around since the eighties, it's nothing new. What would be in it for Nicole and Katie to play his beard? Money and good movie parts for one.

On another note, this is how ridiculous TomKat has become: four bloody articles on them in one morning on the Internet Movie Database.

Cruise "Tried To Convert Johansson"
Scarlett Johansson pulled out of appearing in the second Mission: Impossible sequel after Tom Cruise tried to convert her to scientology, according to reports. Cruise, who produces the action adventures, met with Johansson ahead of casting for the upcoming Mission: Impossible 3 and took her to one of the controversial religion's headquarters, claims Radarmagazine.Com. A source tells the website, "After two hours of proselytizing, Cruise opened a door to reveal a second room full of upper-level Scientologists who had been waiting to dine with the pair, at which point the cool-headed ingénue politely excused herself." Officially Johansson quit the film because of scheduling conflicts after the film was delayed so Cruise could make War Of The Worlds.

Spielberg Defends Cruise's Love Declarations
Movie-maker Steven Spielberg has leapt to the defense of newly-engaged superstar Tom Cruise, after weeks of media and public criticism of the actor's over-enthusiastic declarations of love for fiancee Katie Holmes. The 42-year-old film hunk shocked America when he punched the air repeatedly and jumped on Oprah Winfrey's famous sofa, while laughing manically as he shouted, "I'm in love" on the May 23 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Nearly two weeks later he repeated his couch-surfing antics on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, saying, "When I start to think about her, things happen. So, cease talking." Subsequent polls in People and Us Weekly show a majority of readers believe the couple's romance is a publicity stunt to promote their latest films - Cruise's War Of The Worlds and Holmes' Batman Begins. But in an interview with Newsweek magazine, director Spielberg lashed out at claims he and Paramount Pictures were concerned Cruise's public displays of affection would negatively affect the sci-fi epic. Spielberg says, "I was a little upset. I was a little upset (at the media attention). Not at Tom, but at the press for making such a big deal out of a kind of small thing. Tom lost his cool because he was deliriously happy, and now he was being punished for his public display of happiness. What Tom did on Oprah was exactly what Tom did with me when he first told me about Katie Holmes. But the press didn't like the way Tom bared his soul." Cruise proposed to Holmes in the early hours of Friday morning at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

Cruise Pranksters Released on Bail
The four practical jokers arrested for squirting Tom Cruise with water at the London premiere of War Of The Worlds were released on police bail yesterday. The film crew, who performed the prank for an upcoming comedy show to be broadcast by British TV network Channel 4, have been ordered to report back to police on July 4 and could be charged with assault if Cruise decides to take the matter further. The 42-year-old was giving interviews to journalists attending the celebrity screen at Leicester Square's Odeon cinema when he was soaked with water squirted from a bogus microphone. According to British newspaper the Daily Mirror, rock matriarch Sharon Osbourne was treated to a similar soaking at a film premiere in London last month - but she decided to take the law into her own hands and threw a bucket of water over the lead practical joker. ( I love that broad.)

Holmes Dropped from 'Batman' Sequel
Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman have signed to star in a second Batman movie, but love interest Katie Holmes has been dropped. Movie bosses are thrilled with the response to Batman Begins - it took $46.9 million in its first weekend at the US box office - and have snapped up the film's stars for a sequel. Bale as Batman was the first to put pen to paper, followed by Caine as butler Alfred and Freeman as Bruce Wayne's business associate Lucius Fox. But Holmes won't reprise her role as district attorney Rachel Dawes - reportedly because Warner Bros is angry her engagement to Tom Cruise has stolen media attention away from the movie. A source tells Pagesix.Com, "Everyone is in agreement that the movie's strength is with Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman." Adding of Holmes, "She won't be in the sequel... the next romantic interest will be a much stronger actress. Warner is happy that people are now focusing on who'll be playing the Joker rather than Katie and Tom."

(And may I suggest Mark Hamill for The Joker?)

. . .

And I just read that Batman only made $46 million. I bet TomKat had something to do with such poor returns, which sucks and it doesn't bode well for War of the Worlds...

I think Batman was not going to be a 100 million opening weekend kind of movie.

I do think, however, that War of the Worlds will be a huge opener assuming nothing else huge is opening that weekend. I mean that has Summer blockbuster written all over it

The box office has been down for 17 weeks straight, not even Star Wars could lift it, the likes of Tom Cruise and his tard-like behavior won't help it. I bet it'll get something like Batman and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, not much more. It's going to have lots of competition with Batman, Bewitched, Herbie, and Land of the Dead, imo. Their last movie together didn't so hot for a Cruise/Spielberg flick.

It is acutally battery in most states

But, here is the general legal def. of assault and battery:

If the victim has been actually touched by the person committing the crime, then battery has occurred. If the victim has not actually been touched, but only threatened, then the crime is considered to be assault.

http://criminal-law.freeadvice.com/violent_crimes/assault_battery.htm

and

Introduction
In the context of criminal law, "assault and battery" are typically components of a single offense. In tort law, "assault" and "battery" are separate, with an assault being an act which creates fear of an imminent battery, and the battery being an unlawful touching. Assault and battery are intentional torts, meaning that the defendant actually intends to put the plaintiff in fear of being battered, or intends to wrongfully touch the plaintiff. The wrongful touching need not inflict physical injury, and may be indirect (such as contact through a thrown stone, or spitting). This article describes the law of assault and battery as it is commonly applied, although the law may vary in any specific jurisdiction.

Assault

An assault invoves:

An intentional, unlawful threat or "offer" to cause bodily injury to another by force;
Under circumstances which create in the other person a well-founded fear of imminent peril;
Where there exists the apparent present ability to carry out the act if not prevented.
Note that an assault can be completed even if there is no actual contact with the plaintiff, and even if the defendant had no actual ability to carry out the apparent threat. For example, a defendant who points a realistic toy gun at the plaintiff may be liable for assault, even though the defendant was fifty feet away from the plaintiff and had no actual ability to inflict harm from that distance.

Battery

A battery is the willful or intentional touching of a person against that person’s will by another person, or by an object or substance put in motion by that other person. Please note that an offensive touching can constitute a battery even if it does not cause injury, and could not reasonably be expected to cause injury. A defendant who emphatically pokes the plaintiff in the chest with his index finger to emphasize a point may be culpable for battery (although the damages award that results may well be nominal). A defendant who spits on a plaintiff, even though there is little chance that the spitting will cause any injury other than to the plaintiff's dignity, has committed a battery.

Well, the concept of priviledge in general prevents amny things from being assault and battery:

Privilege

In order to be liable for an assault or battery, the defendant must lack privilege to assault or batter the plaintiff. The following are examples of "privilege":

Consent

Where a defendant has the plaintiff's consent to commit an act of assault or battery, the plaintiff may not later bring a lawsuit. The most typical context for consent occurs in sports. The intentional foul in basketball, or the tackle in football, are an anticipated part of the game. While it may be possible for certain conduct to be so far outside the realm of what is reasonable to nonetheless give rise to a tort - for example, chopping an opposing player off at the knees in a football game, an action which is known to have a very high probability of causing serious and even crippling injury - rule violations which are part of standard play are unlikely to support a legal action. Consent also exists in the context of authorized medical or surgical procedures.

Police Conduct

A police officer is privileged to apply the threat of force, or if necessary to apply actual force, in order to effect a lawful arrest. A defendant who suffers injury as the result of reasonable force exerted by the police to effect a lawful arrest will not be able to sustain a lawsuit against the arresting officers for assault or battery.

Self-Defense

A person who is assaulted may use such reasonable force as may be necessary, or which at the time reasonably appears to be necessary, to protect himself or herself from bodily harm. An act of self-defense must ordinarily be proportionate to the threat. That is, if you believe a person is going to spit on you, depending upon the context it may be reasonable to push the person away, but it would not be reasonable to hit the person with a baseball bat.

A plaintiff may be expected to withdraw from the threat, if possible, before engaging in forcible resistance. However, if the plaintiff is in his own home and the defendant is not a member of the plaintiff's household, a plaintiff will typically not be required to further withdraw from the threat once the plaintiff has retreated to his own home.

Defense of Others

Defense of others is similar to self-defense, and usually occurs in the context of one family member protecting another. Some jurisdictions permit a defendant to assert defense of others, even where the defendant is mistaken as to the existence of a threat, as long as the mistake is reasonable. Other jurisdictions do not permit this defense unless there was an actual threat or battery against the other person.

Voluntary (Mutual) Combat

Where the plaintiff voluntarily engages in a fight with defendant for the sake of fighting and not as a means of self-defense, the plaintiff may not recover for an assault or battery unless the defendant beat the plaintiff excessively or used unreasonable force. If two people voluntarily enter a brawl, it is unlikely that either will be able to sue the other. However, if one falls, and the other takes advantage of the situation by kicking him and causing injury, that act may well be considered to be an excessive use of force which would support a cause of action.

Defense of Property

Many jurisdictions allow the use of some amount of threat or force by a person who is seeking to protect his own property from theft or damage. In most jurisdictions, there is no privilege to use force that may cause death or serious injury against trespassers unless the trespass itself threatens death or serious injury. Please note that there are some jurisdictions with extraordinarily broad laws, permitting the use of significant and even deadly force to prevent the theft of property. (Leaving aside the moral issues of using physical force to defend property, be sure that you know your local laws before applying force in such a situation.)

Discipline

Some people are legally authorized to apply physical restraint or battery in order to discipline others. For example, in most jurisdictions, parents are legally authorized to apply reasonable physical discipline upon their children. In some jurisdictions, school teachers are permitted to apply a certain level of physical restraint or discipline against students. The staff of a mental health facility may have legal authority to apply reasonable restraint to prevent a patient from causing harm to himself, to others, or to property.

Merchant's Privilege

Most jurisdictions grant merchants the right to apply reasonable force to detain shoplifters, or other persons who the merchant reasonably believes are attempting to steal the merchant's property.

Provocation

Words alone, no matter how insulting or provocative, do not justify an assault or battery against the person who utters the words.

Did Tom Cruise actually tell the police to press charges then and there or did the police just arrest them and haul them away. I think in a crowd like that, the latter is what happened. Plus, Tom appeared to laugh as it happened.

He laughed briefly then went ape****.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050621/ap_en_ce/people_cruise_19

Cruise appeared to laugh but then asked the prankster: "Why would you do that?"

As the man gave a barely audible excuse, Cruise said: "Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?" The prankster tried to walk away but Cruise reached across the metal barrier, held his arm and said: "Don't run away. That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that ... it's incredibly rude."

The actor grew increasingly irritated and told the man: "You're a jerk."

Police detained the man who squirted Cruise and also arrested three other men who filmed the incident. The four were working on a new comedy show for British TV station Channel 4 in which celebrities are the targets of practical jokes.

I have no clue if he sought out the police or not, so there's no point in assuming anything.

Finally, how is bad press to have someone arrested for attacking you?

"Attacking."

That's exactly the kind of word that creates the bad press by making people think the whole mess is ridiculous. A lot of people look at this and think he overreacted. I've avoided this thread 'til now because, well, I really don't like Tom Cruise and any discussion of him, good or bad, isn't really very appealing for me.

He's a mediocre actor and not particularly attractive, if you ask me. And his smile? Bugs the sh*t out of me. He's like a damned car salesman or something.

The only movies I've liked that he starred in?

Rainman
Risky Business
Far and Away (which is quite surprising, considering the fact that I don't like Nicole Kidman either)
The Last Samarai (he's almost likeable when he doesn't flash that f*cking smile)

I've not met him so far in life so I don't know what he's like although he seems fine to me from his interviews, but I do like a lot of his movies. Most are not exactly groundbreaking acting performances but he is king of his domain when it comes to popular culture movies.

Forgive my ignorance, but why DO so many peoples claim TC is gay? Is there proof or something? Is this just a guess, or a hunch?

These things don't happen in a vacuum. LA is a very tiny place, gossip wise. I heard stories about him within weeks of moving here. On the other hand, I never heard them about other stars of his prominence and age.

I am not a fan of his, but I just never understood how all these accusation got started in the first place. He does not seem gay at all to me. He does not seem the least bit effeminate to me either, does he to you? (I know that that is not a prerequisite

What do you expect ? A lisp ? Bleached hair ? A dress ?

People rarely guess I'M gay. Or any of the guys I date.

For the record, I think he comes across as girly and precious. Not masculine at all.

Why would Nichole play along with this, what would be in it for her? She is gorgeous and could probably get any man she wanted, why would she want to be in that situation?

Money. Success. Power. Fame. What every actor/celebrity wanna be wants. People will stop at almost nothing to get these things.

I agree that Rain Man is definitely up there as one of his best performances but Hoffman did deserve that Oscar IMO.

I don't know why people think War Of The Worlds will fail. I reckon it's gonna be huge. You can't compare it with Batman Begins really, because with all the comic book adaptations and superhero movies hitting cinemas in the last few years, it was inevitable that people were going to lose interest in them a little eventually.

I don't think it's going to be a big bomb or fail, I just don't think it's going to be "huge." It'll probably do the same kind of business Batman and Mr. and Mrs. Smith did opening weekend. I suppose people are getting sick of Cruise, but everyone knows that War Of The Worlds is out soon because of it, and that can only be a good thing.

Mr & Mrs Smith actually exceeded expectations and gave both Jolie and Pitt the biggest opening of their careers. It's a decent movie, but a lot of that was down to all the publicity leading up to the release.
Batman Begins didn't do quite as well as expected, but still opened with $72.9 million (for its five-day gross - it opened on a Wednesday). That's still pretty impressive. All the press Holmes garnered didn't really affect that movie in a positive or negative way I think, because no one is going to see Batman to see the love interest.

I think all the signs are good for WOTW but of couse I could be wrong.

I'm seeing it this week, so I may well change my mind!

I have to say I totally forgot Kidman was in Batman Forever. Tom Cruise obviously likes Batman's chicks.
