Wow a lot of Zep love. Alot of the more common songs I've grown sick of, but not a bad list. Free Bird, though, I can never grow tired of!

How in the hell did a wussy ass song like "Hotel California" get in that group of tunes? That thing almost borders on Folk music - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but come on!

I was thinking the same thing. Good song.....but it doesn't quite fit with the rest of them.

I agree. I like Hotel California but it's not a rock song. The only song on there that I don't like at all is Freebird. It's not much of a rock song either.

Why isnt "Do You Feel Like I Do" (Frampton Comes Alive) on that list? That wuz an AWESOME Song/LP.....

ps: I DESPISE Led Zeppelin, mostly because of Robert Plant who shrieks like a freakin girlie.....

I like all of those bands, with the exception of The Eagles, so I guess that list is ok. Those songs have all been run into the freakin' ground though. And Freebird sucks, IMO. Overrated & overplayed. Blech.

I like how all of those songs are the typical songs associated with each of those bands. Just shows how open-minded people are to music anymore.

Some of my favourites, not in order:
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil
The Clash - London Calling
Sly And The Family Stone - Dance To The Music
Prince - Purple Rain
Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
David Bowie - Life on Mars?
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon
David Bowie (gotta love David  ) - Young Americans

P.S
These are ten but there would be hundreds... By the way, a honorable mention to a genius cover, Summertime - Janis Joplin.

I agree with dreamsunwind, people these days use the most mainstream and common bands for contests or polls like that, not many people can look past the Whole Lotta Love vision and look at more unique and yet more diverse bands and songs that could have easily made any list

I think people are smarter than that.

Maybe so but incidently, just because Stairway To Heaven is overplayed doesn't mean Zeppelin were not great or diverse.

then why cant a bucn of people vote another zepplin song than just stairway to heaven, i mean its a good song, but not their best

It's one of my favourites, and for me it holds that kind of unique and intense emotional power that best rock tracks are able to reflect... Then it's all a matter of tastes.

That's irrelevant. Why can't people recognise Fleetwood Mac songs other than Dreams and Don't Stop? Doesn't make FM less diverse just because people remember those ones. Anyway, Stairway is diverse in terms of popular rock.

I agree. STH is very diverse, especially for the time it was released. The lyrics are beautiful, the guitar is killer and the arrangement is unmatched, in my opinion. I also thought Hotel California looked a little out of place, but that's only because it's a little more sedate than the other rockers. It's still a rock song, though. The theme I see with all of them is that they were all kind of trendsetters or pioneers in rock. HC's lyrics are also amazing and the arrangment is really unique. It just doesn't sound like any other song. The only one I might disagree with is AC/DC's Highway To Hell. I think I would have gone with Back In Black.

Stariway to Heaven is an amazing song, I just dont like how its so predictable that its always #1. I love the song but its not even my favorite Led Zepplin song. Black Dog is.

Duh, it was the time of progressive rock which utilized both acoustic and electric sections within a single song with ease. "Stairway To Heaven" is not a unique song in that regard, although it is virtually a textbook example on the approach.

I apologize for the tone of the post, it's an old and stupid habit of mine to act like the expert on these matters. :o

And if you don't believe me, take a listen to Genesis' "The Musical Box", for instance...

No prob. :) My aunt is a Genesis/Collins fan (was this Gabriel?), so I'll see if she has it in her collection.

As probably one of only a handful on this site who actually listened to that music when it happened, I think there are some bands/songs that SHOULD have been mentioned that werent:
Aerosmith: Dream On or Back in the Saddle
Boston: Rock and Roll Band or More Than a Feeling
Kiss: I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night (and Party Every Day)
Journey: Wheel in the Sky or Lights
Boz Skaggs: anything from his Silk Degrees album
Santana: come ON! the man is a Genius!
Peter Frampton: Frampton Comes Alive (STILL unmatched as a concert album IMO)
Janice Joplin: Any and Everything. Nuff Said.

Considering that poll was compiled by a UK listener base, I cant help but notice most of the bands were British (with a few exceptions). So, Im thinking, maybe there would be a different listing of songs on THIS side of the pond.....

I knew I would get flamed for this :laugh:. That's okay, I was totally expecting it.

Yes, yes, the F.M. version is a great version but I prefer the Melvins sludgey, Black Sabbathy, metally version. Call it an homage! I do.

Not bad, not bad.. I'd put the list more like this (excluding all from the original BBC list for kicks):

Van Halen – Ain’t Talkin Bout Love
Ozzy – Crazy Train
Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart
Ozzy – Iron Man
LZ – Dyer Maker
Airplane – White Rabbit
Tull – Aqualung
Nazareth – Hair of the Dog
Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Nugent – Stranglehold
Allman Bros. – Whipping Post

There's 11 in there. I consider the two for Ozzy like one. Now, ask me about metal.. Anyone care to do a metal top 10? :D
