I live in L.A. and I've been through more than a few. Pretty freaky stuff, but try not to let it ruin your vacation/trip. It's part of the charm that is California. That and the obscene cost of living, congestion, traffic and smog. But, hey, we have an ocean! Enjoy your stay. :D

Just got out of the shower and the house starts shaking and I estimated between 4 and 5 and I found THIS (http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/STORE/X51161673/ciim_display.html)

http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/STORE/X51161673/51161673_ciim.gif

other communities felt it too (http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/STORE/X51161673/ciim_stats_1.html)

4.8 considering I live in a mountain town, and we almost never get them here, thats pretty amazing....

4.8 is actually not considered all that big as earthquakes go, Ive been in some that were over 6 on the richter scale when I lived in the Bay Area....but for this area, that's pretty amazing...

Jason: did you see the seismogram print in my first post? (I edited it from the original) looks pretty harmless til you get down to the bottom!!!

I would SOOOOOOO love to move to Santa Barbara --- but I will not live where the Earth moves :eek:I predict that Georgia will suffer mighty quakes & noxious fumes!

The most recent EQ in Georgia was on January 18. According to the USGS, it was a microquake of magnitude 2.2.

I fell in love with California! I didn't let it ruin my stay, but it was always in the back of my mind! Call me stupid, but I don't ever think I realized how mountainous it is out there!!! And you're right- I can tell the cost of living is obscene! A gallon of gas in L.A./ Hollywood was $2.59 for the cheap stuff!

From my understanding, the average home price in Santa Barbara is $750,000.... Too rich for my blood, but it has to be one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. I was in love with it instantly.

David, the yellow line didnt extend to my neck of the woods yet I felt the house shake...not BAD but you could hear the rumble and things kinda clinked a bit...

lemmee guess: you are interested in geology? you seemed to have very technical info re: the tsunamis too...

well, there's talk it should soon hit $3! California IS beautiful, we have every sort of terrain you can think of (except swamps) Mountains, Deserts, Forests, river valleys, foothills, ocean beaches...lakes, (even a saltwater lake!) Where I live, it is like Summer Camp 24/7 and I LOVE it!

My Brother's home in little old El Sobrante could sell right now for $750k so Im sure the homes in Santa Barbara could go for that much...The cost of living IS high but in certain areas (like the Bay Area or Silicon Valley) the wages are also high...so its a trade off. Where I live, in the Mountains above Chico, there really isnt any work and the homes here sell for big bucks anyway...go figure! Most of the buyers are either Bay Area (or Southern CA) transplants who are retiring here or Big Bucks professionals in Medicine or Law or Construction. Ive heard stories where Californians sell their homes and go back East and pay for a new home outright...sigh....to have a home paid off...

oh well, I only have 27 more years to go on my mortgage :]
